In this episode, we're diving into the final pillar of fatherhood—physical presence. Being there for your kids isn't just about big events; it's about showing up every day, in the little moments that matter. From cheering at games to watching TV shows you don't even like, your presence shapes their confidence, trust, and sense of love. Let's talk about why consistency is key and how just being there can make all the difference. If you know a dad who needs to hear this, send it his way.
Physical Presence ≠ Productivity: Busting the Biggest Leadership Myth of 2025 In a world obsessed with "butts in seats," our latest episode tackles the age-old question that's more relevant than ever: Does physical presence actually equal productivity? (Spoiler alert: It doesn't.) The Truth Behind the Desk When COVID-19 forced a global experiment in remote work, it exposed something many leaders weren't ready to admit—productivity has very little to do with where your body is located. As illustrated through real workplace examples, productivity is more about mindset than physical location. Culture Eats Location for Breakfast Our conversation highlighted a crucial insight: organizational culture trumps office policy every time. Without clear communication, articulated values, and intentional leadership, it doesn't matter if your team is sitting right in front of you or working from the moon. Trust: The Currency of Remote Success The leaders who thrived during pandemic-forced remote work were those who already trusted their teams. Those who equated supervision with productivity? They struggled mightily (and still do). The Bottom Line The most productive employees aren't necessarily the ones you can see—they're the ones who are mentally present and engaged with their work. Physical presence is just one ingredient in the productivity recipe, and often not even the most important one. Tune in for:
70% of high-achieving executives are trapped in sexless marriages. The more they dominate in the boardroom, the more they struggle in the bedroom. Here's what no one tells you: Using business strategies at home is killing your marriage.I've seen this pattern hundreds of times: You're more respected by your board than your wife Your leadership skills that work at work backfire at home You're retreating to the office to avoid the cold nights Your emotional disconnection is starting to affect your peak performanceThe "Parental Echo Response" is using your greatest strength against you. But there's a systematic approach to breaking this pattern. One of my clients, a CEO with 300% revenue growth, transformed his marriage by mastering three key elements: Physical Presence (beyond just hitting the gym) Mental Mastery (reading situations before they explode) Emotional Authority (being unshakeable without being cold)Time doesn't fix this. Action does.
Alex Dwek is the Chief Operating Officer at Nas Company, leading operations for Nas.io and Nas Academy. With a background in strategy and operations, Alex held leadership roles at Grab and Uber across Southeast Asia. He is a Chartered Accountant and a graduate of The University of Manchester, currently based in Singapore. In this episode, I sat down with Alex to reflect on some of today's most pressing questions—how do we build authentic community in an increasingly digital world? We dive into how the poison of social media might also hold the cure, unpack the brokenness of the online job market, and question what skills truly matter in times of uncertainty and crisis. Drawing from his experiences in Singapore and East Asia, Alex brings fresh perspectives on leadership, strategy, and the power of values-driven action. Ultimately, this conversation is a deep dive into the complexity of human connection—one grounded in the belief that true community must be substantiated by physical presence, touch, and the simple, irreplaceable experience of being together.

Trustworthiness involves dependability, vulnerability, and a commitment to consistency—qualities that can strengthen any partnership.Mastering Attunement for Deeper Emotional Connection:The hosts explain the ATTUNE approach (Attend, Turn Toward, Understand, Non-defensive Listening, Empathy), a method for fostering emotional intimacy. Each step helps men create a safe and supportive space for their partners.Overcoming Defensiveness and Embracing Emotional Vulnerability:Charles and Dan candidly share their struggles with vulnerability and how men's fear of showing emotions can hinder relationships. They encourage listeners to view emotional openness as a strength, not a weakness.Breaking the Cycle of Conflict and Building Intimacy:The episode covers strategies for ending cycles of conflict and withdrawal in relationships. The hosts explain that empathy and understanding, rather than a desire to "fix" things, can lead to meaningful intimacy.Physical Presence and Attentiveness in Relationships:Small gestures—like putting away distractions, making eye contact, and offering full attention—can strengthen trust and convey emotional security to a partner.Top Takeaways and Relationship Tips for Men:Develop Trustworthiness - Consistency and honesty are key. Show up as a reliable partner by honoring commitments and staying transparent.Use Attunement Techniques for Lasting Connection - Apply the ATTUNE method to connect emotionally with your partner and build a resilient relationship.Prioritize Listening and Empathy Over Fixing - Women want to feel heard and understood, not necessarily "fixed." Listen actively and ask questions to show you care.Be Present in the Moment - Avoid distractions like phones or TV during meaningful conversations to demonstrate respect and priority.Break Cycles of Conflict with Empathy - Be the first to create emotional connection, even when it's uncomfortable, to foster closeness and intimacy.Memorable Quotes for Reflection:“Trustworthiness is about more than being truthful; it's about showing up consistently and reliably.”“Attunement isn't just about hearing words—it's about fully engaging to make your partner feel valued and understood.”“Our relationships thrive when we stop focusing on fixing and start focusing on understanding.”Additional Resources:The Man's Guide to Women by John and Julie Gottman for more insights into relationship dynamics.Support the show

In this episode, Ali Mezey share the concept of 'Soma' as illuminated by Master Bodyworker and Author, Thomas Hanna, in his book The Body of Life. Thomas Hanna coined the term 'somatic' now used extensively by practitioners of many body-based disciplines - he is one of the grandfathers of body therapy practiced all over the world in infinite variation. in this episode, Ali reads out of the introductory chapter which discussing the distinction between the physical body and the living, dynamic 'Soma' and dives into the broader context of human embodiment. Hanna's body of work, and this episode, offer a profound perspective on the interconnectedness, adaptability, and intrinsic intelligence of living systems. He was 61.Born November 21, 1928, in Waco, Texas, Hanna was the founder of the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training in Novato, California and the editor of Somatics: Magazine-Journal of the Bodily Arts and Sciences. He also authored seven books, perhaps best know for Bodies in Revolt: A Primer in Somatic Thinking (1970) and Somatics (1989).Hanna is survived by his wife, Eleanor Criswell, and three children, daughters Tad Hanna and Wendell Zitelman , and son Michael Hanna. As an undergraduate at Texas Christian University from which he received a bachelor's in 1949, Hanna initially thought about going into theology. He continued studies at the University of Chicago, later receiving a Bachelor of Divinity and then a doctorate in philosophy.Hanna taught in Europe and several colleges throughout the U.S. At his memorial service held, Aug. 12, several people referred to his popularity as a teacher. One speaker recalled an incident while Hanna was teaching at the University of Florida. He was having car trouble and was going to be late getting to his class. He called his secretary as asked her to notify the class that he would be there but would arrive late. When he did arrive an hour and a half late, the class of 700 yoga students was still waiting for him in the ROTC quadrangle where the class met. Truly he was an engaging teacher. His commitment and involvement with his material, as well as his skill at communicating it, inspired his students. In his early seminal books, he posed philosophical questions about humanity, i.e. what is it to be human, to be embodied, to be free? Those questions run like themes though his work. They were questions he never ceased exploring. In the early 1970's, after reading Bodies in Revolt, a well-known member of the bodywork world suggested he meet and study with Moshe Feldenkrais. As a result, Hanna studied with Feldenkrais in 1973 and 1974, and organized the first four-year Feldenkrais training program in the U.S. in 1975. He also founded the Novato Institute in 1975.Hanna considered himself a writer, philosopher and teacher, not a bodyworker. He called the hands-on work Clinical Somatic Education. It was his strong belief that real change can only occur from within and not be imposed on someone from the outside. It is the difference between working on someone and working with someone. The goal was not to change tissue but to restore awareness and voluntary control over the sensory-motor system. He believed that people were affected by a condition he termed sensory motor amnesia (SMA), and his work was designed to correct this. The concept of SMA is that if you lose your awareness of a part of your body, either through trauma or habituation, you lose your ability o move that part. Restoring awareness restores voluntary control. This can then be reinforced with simple movement patterns similar to Feldenkrais movement.Hanna often referred to F.M. Alexander and Feldenkrais as important teachers for him. According to Hanna, Feldenkrais has made a tremendously important discovery about body function, but hadn't fully explored the implications of that discovery himself. Hanna used the analogy that Feldenkrais had opened the door to a vast new territory, but had not gone inside to explore. Hanna had gone through the door and was exploring this new territory in light of recent development in neurophysiology, and the implications were breathtaking. Feldenkrais had said, and Hanna reiterated, that there is no limit what people can learn. In an editorial last fall/winter, Hanna wrote about human mortality, analogizing it with his flowers:“There was only one difference between the flowers and me: the impatiens affirmed the eternity of life, and I did not. The impatiens were pure in the way they lived, and I was sullied with contradiction…I realized that, all things considered, it was the impatiens who lived life to the fullest, whereas I was living my life, hamstrung. It was not I who was superior, but they…Is total affirmation of life and growth the highest good, or is it some kind of sinful ignorance? Should I live awaiting the end that I have envisaged, or should I live expecting only life and only future?“Who is wiser? I, or the impatiens? I think the impatiens are wiser. They assume only what they know and feel. They do not assume something they do not know and feel…“And so I water my impatiens this summer and into the autumn. And I gaze at their happy innocence. They are my teachers, just as my mother is my teacher. And the water sinks down into the soil, giving life. It is the same soil from which I sprang and my mother sprang. And it is the same soil that will receive us both.“If I trusted it to give us life at the beginning, I might just as well trust it to give us life at the end. In that way, I have joined in a wisdom that tells me that my mother, my flowers, and I myself are now together and somehow will always be.”- Victoria Carmona, a student of Hanna's, contributed to this report. From Massa...

This episode acts as a guide for anyone seeking to advance in their professional or personal lives with enduring success. Mark offers powerful ideas that transform regular actions into cornerstones of a fulfilling journey. The episode begins by emphasizing the importance of "showing up" with intention in one's career and business ventures. In this episode, Jody and Meghan discuss how to build rapport with another person, whether that is at a social networking event or it is over time through continuous interaction. Building rapport is about understanding and connecting with another person through a close and harmonious relationship. There are five key principles that help a person build rapport: Empathy - the ability to understand and share feelings with another person Authenticity - being genuine; being who you say you are Similarities - finding a common ground; building a bridge between individuals Shared Experiences - experiences shape individuals, and shared experiences create a sense of connection Physical Presence - the manner in which we present ourselves; paralanguage Seeking to understand others before you seek to be understood allows for greater depth of both conversations and interactions. You want to be present in the moment, show a genuine interest in the other person, make eye contact, practice active listening, and be very intentional about the interaction. When you enter into a conversation, you want to appear open and confident. Shake the other person's hand, introduce yourself, and repeat their name back to them when they introduce themselves, like, “Meghan! It's a pleasure to meet you, Meghan.” This reinforces your memory of their name, and it is hypnotic to use their name in the conversation. Be present and intentional with your words and actions. A gut voch everybody, I'll tell you a mayseh. You know, tzadikim look like they're operating on the same plane as we are, they walk through a doorway, they breathe air like we do. But the truth is, Tzadikim and tzidkanios are operating on a different space altogether so i'll tell you a mayseh about that. Everyone's heard of the tzadik reb Mendel Rimanover, when he was younger he spent time by Reb Meilech of Lizhensk. One Friday night they were by the tish, with many chassidim and they get up to the soup. The waiter comes out with the soup, takes a bowl and puts it in front of Reb Meilech. Reb Meilech looks at the soup, he takes a bowl and spills it on the floor. As the rebbe spills it on the floor, Reb Mendel Rimanover says rebbe we're going to go to jail, and Reb Meilech says no no no, we're here. The whole thing makes no sense, what is he doing spilling the soup, what does the response mean that we're here? After things calmed down, the chassidim asked the rebbe what happened. So this is the mayseh. Back then the yidden were controlled and somewhat owned by the Porutz, the land-owner. And for the most part the Porutz can do what he wants and it would give tzaros. But there are some things that even the Porutz can't do and would need permission from the prince or the King. The porutz who owned the shtetl that Reb Meilech was a part of, was a big anti-semite and was always looking for excuses to get rid of yidden. He wasn't able to fully expel Yidden, he needed permission from the higher-ups, he had to submit an official complaint against the jewish people to his higher-ups and then g-d forbid his plan would be fulfilled to expel the yidden. But in order for this claim to be made it had to be done in a proper way, with documentation and paperwork etc. The story was that Friday night, the porutz was sitting in his office with an official paper and reservoir of ink while the tish is happening. He's about to fill out this paperwork to file his official complaint and submit it to his higher-ups and it would result in the yidden being expelled. It happens to be that porutz, his personality was an extremely superstitious person. And it happens to be that Reb Meilech knew, that if at that moment while he was filling out the paperwork if something happened that if the porutz saw something happen that was a bad sign he would stop writing the document and drop the idea. So what Reb Meilech was doing was that while he's by his tish, that's where his body is. Where his mind is is at the office with the porutz. When Reb meilech picked up the soup and poured ito n the floor, what he was doing in his mind in the room with the porutz was he was taking the ink and poured it on all the papers, and the Porutz stopped it all. Reb Mendel of Rimanover was on the same wavelength, he was by the porutz also, so when he sees reb meilech spilling the ink he says rebbe we're going to go to jail for this, and Reb meilech says no were here, physically we're actually here no one sees us there. Tzadikim are operating in a different space. What's amazing here is you see the different levels of tzadikim, Reb Mendel Rimanover was a tzadik in his own right, he couldn't identify a part of himself in this world. Reb Meilech was able to be with his mind in one place and to also be down in this world, with the chassidim at the tish. He was able to recognize that and sort of come to terms with that split, being in one place spiritually and one place physically. This is one of the biggest qualities of tzadikim, of being in 2 places at one time. Of being able to identify being involved with physical thing, being involved with people, being fully there but at the same time being fully elsewhere as well. That's a big...

We talk about nexus a lot. We discuss it in virtually all our webinars, we write articles and blog posts about it, yet it continues to be one of the topics that we get the most questions about so I thought it would be a good subject to do a series of podcasts about. Today we are going to discuss physical presence nexus for sales tax.

On Genuflecting By Larry Beane, The ceremony of genuflecting at the altar is a particular ceremony that some people deride as “Too Catholic.” Genuflecting is what is commonly called “taking a knee.” It is a kind of kneeling in which one drops to only one knee, probably in the interest of time to be able to get back up quickly - especially for pastors who become long in the tooth often at a rate exceeding that of the laity. When it comes to kneeling, sometimes the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. For many of us d'un certain âge, bowing from the waist down is a more practical way of carrying out this ceremony. But you young guys should be able to genuflect and rise again with no trouble, or else you need to hit the glucosamine and chondroiten, if not the gym. When I was the campus pastor of a high school, one of my duties was to lead the football team in the Lord's Prayer in the end zone, after the coach called out the rubric: “Take a knee, guys!”. Kneeling is a posture of prayer, of humility, and of worship of God. It is a ceremony that is appropriate at certain times in our liturgy. According to our shared confession in the Book of Concord, the purpose of ceremonies is that people may be “taught what they need to know about Christ” (AC 24:3). And if Roman Catholics and Anglicans genuflect before the altar, but Baptists, Methodists, the Reformed, and Non-Denominational Christians do not, what is the ceremony (or lack of ceremony) teaching? Indeed, it would be incongruent for a Baptist minister to pronounce the Words of Institution and then genuflect after the words pertaining to each element. This is because Baptists believe that Christ is not present, that the elements are only symbolic. Roman Catholics and (at least some) Anglicans believe that Jesus is miraculously and physically present in the Sacrament. So which ceremony (genuflecting or not genuflecting) makes more sense for the Lutheran consecration? What does genuflecting during the consecration teach about Christ? Kneeling is an act of worship. Angels forbade kneeling before them because they are not worthy of worship (Rev 19:10, 22:8-9). We are to worship God alone (Matt 9:10). The wise men “fell down and worshipped” the baby Jesus (Matt 2:11) - with the word for worship (προσκυνὲω) being more than just an intellectual acknowledgement of his divinity. The word means to worship with the body, by kneeling or prostrating oneself, in the presence of God. A Baptist minister who confesses that the elements are only symbolic would - in his own mind and confession - be guilty of idolatry were he to genuflect before that which is merely a creature and not the Creator. Lutherans - along with Roman Catholics and (some) Anglicans (and the Orthodox Christians), confess the Real Presence, that Jesus is physically (not merely symbolically or spiritually) present. So our piety concerning the Lord's Supper is traditionally quite different than that of a Baptist or Presbyterian or Non-Denominational pastor or layman. For instance, most Lutherans kneel to receive the Sacrament, and our church architecture typically encourages this by virtue of a communion rail with kneelers. Again, this would not make sense in a Baptist context. (I'm not picking on Baptists here, it's just that they are the largest confession of Christians in our context in North America who confess the symbolic nature of their communion elements). So, is it also incongruent for Lutherans to genuflect during the consecration? Interestingly, during the Reformation, the Reformed accused the Lutherans of “bread worship” because of our confession of the Physical Presence. They considered such things as bowing or genuflecting during the consecration to be idolatry. Calvinistic rulers ordered the Lutherans to stop doing it. Obviously, we Lutherans disagree with them on this. And in fact, many editions of the Book of Concord include quotes from the early church fathers - largely to respond to the accusations of the Reformed - in a section called the Catalog of Testimonies. One such quote comes from St. Augustine, and it involves acts of worship toward Christ in the Sacrament: Of the Words of the Lord, Discourse 58 (t. 10, p. 217): “If Christ is not God by nature, but a creature, He is neither to be worshiped nor adored as God. But to these things they will reply and say: Why, then, is it that you adore with His divinity His flesh, which you do not deny to be a creature, and are no less devoted to it than to Deity?” The same, on Ps. 99:5 (t. 8, p. 1103): “‘Worship His footstool.' His footstool is the earth, and Christ took upon Him earth of earth, because flesh is of earth; and He received flesh of the flesh of Mary. And because He walked here in this very flesh, he also gave this very flesh to be eaten by us for salvation. But no one eats that flesh unless He has first worshiped it. Therefore the way has been found how such footstool of the Lord may be worshiped, so that we not only do not sin by worshiping, but sin by not worshiping.” The celebrant, deacon, and acolyte customarily have genuflected together in my parish's celebration. I had a devout parishioner who moved away who would also genuflect in the pew. This is not just a ceremony that only the pastor may participate in. We Lutherans also confess the freedom in the Gospel regarding ceremonies. For example, it is customary to make the sign of the cross at certain points in our personal prayer life (as we are instructed in the Small Catechism), and in our liturgical worship. Again, this ceremony teaches us about Christ - it is a confession of His divinity as the Son in the confession of the Holy Trinity, and it links His crucifixion to Holy Baptism by means of the Trinitarian invocation. Tracing the large sign of the cross from our heads, hearts, and shoulders began as a confession against the Arians, who did not confess the Lord's divinity. This way of making the sign of the cross was a modification of the earlier practice of crossing oneself on the forehead as a reminder of Holy Baptism. But no member of the parish should pressure anyone to either make the sign of the cross or not. That is a matter of personal piety. The pastor is also a member of the congregation with Christian freedom. He may choose to cross Himself at certain points in the service, or he may choose not to. No other member of the parish has the right to pressure, bully, or force him to do so, or to stop doing so, any more than anyone has the right to compel a layman to either do so or not. Genuflecting is a similar act of personal piety (as are things like bowing for the Gloria Patri, nodding the head at the name of Jesus, or folding one's hands to pray). So a parishioner has no more right to demand that a pastor cease to genuflect at the altar than he has to demand that the pastor cross himself at the beginning of the sermon. Luther was actually appalled to learn that some parishioners did not genuflect in the pew during the chanting of the Nicene Creed (there is an ancient custom to genuflect at the words “and was made man”). He said: And when the congregation came to the words, “from the Virgin Mary and was made man,” every one genuflected and removed his hat. It would still be proper and appropriate to kneel at the words “and was made man,” to sing them with long notes as formerly, to listen with happy hearts to the message the Divine Majesty abased Himself and became like us poor bags of worms, and to thank God for the ineffable mercy and compassion reflected in the incarnation of the Deity. But who can ever do justice to that theme?...The following tale is told about a course and brutal lout. While the words, “And was made man” were being sung in church, he remained standing, neither genuflecting nor removing his hat. He showed no reverence, but just stood there like a clod. All the others dropped to their knees when the Nicene Creed was prayed and chanted devoutly. Then the devil stepped up to him and hit him so hard it made his head spin. He cursed him gruesomely and said: “May hell consume you, you boorish ass! If God had become an angel like me and the congregation sang: ‘God was made an angel,' I would bend not only my knees but my whole body to the ground! Yes, I would crawl ten ells down into the ground. And you vile human creature, you stand there like a stick or a stone. You hear that God did not become an angel but a man like you, and you just stand there like a stick of wood!” Whether this story is true or not, it is nevertheless in accordance with the faith (Rom. 12:6). With this illustrative story the holy fathers wished to admonish the youth to revere the indescribably great miracle of the incarnation; they wanted us to open our eyes wide and ponder these words as well. ~ Luther's Works, Vol. 22, pp.102-103, 105-106 Everything that we do during worship is a ceremony - even refraining from certain ceremonies. As the late Atheist philosopher Neal Peart put it in a lyrical poem entitled Free Will (some of our readers may even know this entire work from memory): “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.” And before you tap out that hate-letter to Father Eckardt and contact my District President for a heresy trial, I'm not endorsing everything in the song. I'm only using it as an analogy that refraining from a given ceremony is also a ceremony. So we should be deliberate of what confession we are making by either partaking of a ceremonial act, or opting not to. But again, we do so in the realm of Christian liberty. And yes, we should teach, while being mindful that conducting ceremonies - like genuflecting at the altar - is part of that pastoral pedagogy that we are called to do. We should humbly be willing to be taught - especially by the man who has been sent by the Holy Spirit to teach us. And teaching is done in the liturgy as well as in the classroom. What we do in the presence of the altar, font, and pulpit is a powerful confession and explication of what we say that we believe. And if anyone believes genuflecting to be wrong, sinful, or incongruent with our confession, he should be prepared to quote the Bible and the Confessions to make a case for why our ceremonies should resemble those who confess the Real Absence in the Lord's Supper, as well as for making a case that earlier centuries of Lutheran practice has also been wrong.

Michael J. Fleming is the founder and president of Sales Tax and More, a full service consulting and solutions firm with a passion for state tax. He is one of the country's leading authorities on sales tax issues such as consulting and research, registrations, returns, nexus, drop shipping, e-commerce, and service providers. Michael is a renowned writer and speaker, and he regularly presents on webinars. He is also the host of the Sales Tax and More podcast, where he shares his wisdom and learnings to his audience in order to help them navigate the tricky world of taxes. In this episode… Many sellers are under the impression that they do not have to worry about the collection and filing of sales tax returns because they have not established a physical presence in a given state. This is, however, not the case. As sales tax expert Michael J. Fleming explains, economic nexus can still be established if the seller meets the threshold requirements of that particular state. In recent years, some states have started to pursue and penalize the sellers that have defaulted on their sales tax. Although this was halted due to the COVID-19 crisis, these states will continue to reach out to sellers once the country returns to a level of normalcy. So what should you do to avoid back taxes, penalties, interest, and, in some cases, jail time? Michael J. Fleming has all the answers. In this week’s episode of the Sales Tax and More podcast, Michael J. Fleming sits down with his co-host Ellie Moffat to discuss why having physical presence matters more than ever when it comes to filing sales tax returns. Michael explains what sellers should do to reduce their amount of owed back taxes, penalties, and interest, and when it is appropriate to do a Voluntary Disclosure Agreement (VDA). Stay tuned.

#005 - Last week I shared many examples of older adults living in long-term care communities whose families are not able to visit them in person. You probably know older adults who have been admitted to the hospital since the Coronavirus Pandemic and aren't allowed to have family by their side to comfort them and advocate for them. This experience is incredibly upsetting and unsettling for families... because in times of pain and suffering and fear and loss and illness, it's healthy to reach to others for closeness. In fact, being physically close with our loved ones when we are sick actually provides comfort and helps us to heal. This is a cruel irony indeed. On one hand, physical comfort is healing and protective and on the other hand, physical closeness can cause us harm (e.g., COVID-19). Social distancing when our loved ones are sick, has taken away one of our healthiest coping and soothing strategies. As if illness was not hard enough, now there's separation to contend with as well. You may be surprised to learn that there is actually a name for what is happening. It's called Ambiguous Loss. And in today's podcast I explore Ambiguous Loss more deeply. In this episode, I discuss anticipatory grief and ambiguous loss during COVID-19 especially as they relate to older adults and their families. And, I’ll offer suggestions for moving through grief during the Coronavirus pandemic. Here’s a look at what I talk about in this episode…[02:47] Everything you need to know about anticipatory grief, starts here.[04:08] When we begin to process grief, there's a common experience of reflecting on missed opportunities in the past and anticipating losses in the future. Learn why.[06:02] COVID-19 is de-stabilizing life as we knew it and triggering anticipatory grief. As humans, however, we are no strangers to this type of grief, we experience it all throughout our lives. [10:47] You may be surprised to hear that I am grateful for the concept of ambiguous loss. I explain why.[12:59] There are two types of Ambiguous Loss. Part One: Psychological Presence and Physical Absence is described here. We are experiencing a tremendous amount of this type of loss during the Coronavirus Pandemic.[15:46] The second type of Ambiguous Loss is when there is a Psychological Absence and a Physical Presence, like with dementia. This is one of the reasons caring for a loved one with dementia is so incredibly painful. [18:16] I share several recommendations for helping you to move through anticipatory grief and ambiguous loss with By the end of this episode, you'll have a language for talking about how complicated what you're going through actually is during COVID-19 and why you may be feeling drained at the end of the day. You'll understand that grief is a natural human experience and the more we can acknowledge it, normalize it, and find ways to work with it and through it, the better and healthier we'll all be.Check out the show notes here! This week we’re covering the recent Wayfair decision and the potential effect on sales and use tax collection.
Every couple of years, somebody somewhere does something that brings the idea of an Internet-wide sales tax back into the news here in the US. This naturally causes people to freak out left and right. Why? Because most people are seriously misinformed about why this might happen, how it might happen, and what effect it may have on home-based ECommerce businesses. Be sure to Subscribe to the Show! Find much more TRUTH about ECommerce on my site. EPISODE TRANSCRIPT Welcome to Chris Malta's EBiz Insider Podcast, where the TRUTH about ECommerce is WHERE WE LIVE. Every couple of years, somebody somewhere does something that brings the idea of an Internet-wide sales tax back into the news here in the US. Whether it's a court case against a large retailer, a State government looking to raise even more tax revenue they can spend inefficiently, or any number of other triggering issues, the idea of a nationwide Internet Sales Tax in the United States rears it's ugly head over and over again. This naturally causes people to freak out left and right. Why? Because most people are seriously misinformed about why this might happen, how it might happen, and what effect it may have on home-based ECommerce businesses. So let's set the record straight and look at this with a common-sense perspective instead of the intentional fear-mongering created for a variety of specific agendas, none of which are to your benefit as a business owner. I do have to state for the record that I'm not a lawyer or an accountant, so I'm not giving you legal advice here. This is my personal opinion based on what I've seen in more than 40 years in business overall. As a long-time business owner in various large industries, I have an experienced personal perspective that most HOME-based business owners DON'T have. The first thing you need to understand is WHY this issue keeps coming up. It's simple, really. Let's use an example. Somebody in South Dakota buys a product online. The website that sold the product to that person is based in Florida. Since the seller is in Florida, they're not required (or allowed, under current law) to collect sales tax on that South Dakota sale. So the buyer in South Dakota gets to buy something without paying sales tax. The government officials in South Dakota don't like this. "What?!" they exclaim. "Somebody who lives in our State actually bought something without paying US for the privilege of buying it?? How dare they!" This is a common theme with many US States. They complain that they're losing tax revenue because their residents are buying things from across state lines without paying sales tax to their home State. They would much rather have all of their residents buy things ONLY from stores in their own States, so they don't miss out on a dime of that sales tax. Well, that simply isn't going to happen as much as it did decades ago. This is the 21st Century, and things are a changin'. To be fair, though, you CAN see their point. Sales tax revenue is one source (out of MANY sources of tax revenue) that provides states with hundreds of millions of dollars that they use to maintain infrastructure, provide services to their residents, spend wastefully on ill-conceived projects, you know...like States do with tax money. But to BE fair, you have to look at the OTHER side of the issue as well. Business that reside in other States LEGALLY CANNOT collect sales tax for states they don't RESIDE in. So the ECommerce website owner in Florida couldn't collect sales tax from that customer in South Dakota even if they WANTED to. That's because in any State in the US, a business can only collect sales tax in a State that they actually have a PHYSICAL PRESENCE in. That's called a "business nexus". If the website owner in Florida ALSO actually had a physical warehouse or other presence in South Dakota, then that Florida website owner would be REQUIRED to have a South Dakota State Sales Tax license, and collect sales tax on sales made to South Dakota residents. But with home-based ECommerce business owners, that's virtually NEVER the case. Home-based business owners are licensed to collect sales tax in their OWN State, where they DO actually reside and have a physical presence, but they CAN'T collect it from residents of OTHER States. And of course it's not just South Dakota. That's only an example. We're talking about 45 STATES in the US that actually do have sales tax. So in order to collect sales tax on every sale that a home-based business owner makes in the US, that business owner would have to have a physical presence in ALL 45 of those States, and be licensed to collect sales tax in all of those 45 States! That will NEVER happen. THIS is what you're told that the Internet Sales Tax proponents want to change. You hear that they want to come up with some kind of Federal law that requires online sellers to charge sales tax in every State, and makes it somehow LEGAL for online sellers to charge sales tax in States where they don't have a physical presence. HOWEVER, even if the Feds DID somehow make it legal for that to happen, there are over TEN THOUSAND sales tax jurisdictions in the US! Sales tax rates change by State, County and often even Cities and Municipalities. States have a basic sales tax rate, and then Counties and Cities can add more sales tax on top of the State rate. So of course, they DO. Can you imagine, as a small business owner, having to figure out exactly how much sales tax to charge your customers all over the country in more than ten thousand sales tax jurisdictions? It would be literally impossible to do that on your own. So let's look at where we are so far in all this mess as it relates to a home-based business owner. FIRST, the Feds keep talking about requiring all online businesses to charge sales tax to all their customers and pay that tax correctly to the State where EACH customer lives. But SECOND, you CANNOT LEGALLY COLLECT sales tax from customers outside your State. And THIRD, even if you could, you could NEVER figure out on your own how to properly charge customers in all those ten thousand-plus jurisdictions (that, by the way, are constantly changing). All right, we've got that established. Now let's talk about WHY the States keep bringing this up, and the Feds keep talking about it. It's not YOUR business they're concerned with. This is a result of companies like Amazon and eBay, as well as national big-box stores. Earlier, I talked about what a busines nexus is. When a company has a physical presence in a State, they're required and licensed to charge sales tax to customers in that State. But when they DON'T, they're NOT. There are lots of big-box stores that DON'T have physical locations in ALL States, but still SELL to all States nationally online. These are companies that do hundreds of millions of dollars in sales every year. So you can see why the States are frustrated when they're losing all that potential tax revenue from the big-boxers who aren't physically in their States. eBay is mostly people selling to other people, but it's a LOT of people selling to other people. Strictly speaking, eBay sellers CANNOT collect sales tax outside of their own States, so there's that as well. Then there's Amazon. The online retail store that wants to swallow the world. Amazon DOES pay sales tax in all States for items that come from THEIR OWN PRODUCT INVENTORY. But they do NOT charge sales tax on products that come from the huge number of individual home-business owners that sell through Amazon's web site. That's a large amount of money. So this "Tax the Internet" push is always primarily about Amazon, and to a lesser extent, the big-box stores and eBay. It's NOT about YOU, the home-based business owner. As long as you don't sell on Amazon, which is a really bad idea to begin with for many other reasons. Still, you hear about it over and over again, and naturally it worries you. The talking bubbleheads on the news channels predict doom and gloom for small businesses, people who CLAIM to be internet gurus try to sell you useless solutions to paying taxes you still don't have to pay, and around and around we go. The LAST thing we need to talk about here is the fact that home-based business owners worry that people won't buy from them if they ever have to charge sales tax. That's ridiculous. Sales tax is a fact of life, and most online buyers don't even notice it. The very few who do are not the customers you want anyway, because they're bargain hunters and bargain hunters are a retail business's worst customer. So if you ever do end up having to charge sales tax, that means everybody else does too, and it won't matter to your sales. So here's the bottom line: 1. As a home-based business owner, as of this date you do not have to, and CANNOT pay sales tax to States other than where you are located. So you don't collect it for other States. 2. The Tax the Internet push is about the Amazon and the big-box stores, not about you. 3. If the Feds ever do find a way to tax all sales online, they will most likely exempt smaller home-based business that don't make millions of dollars a years. 4. If you DO somehow end up having to charge sales tax to all your customers, so will everybody else, so it won't affect your sales. In business, you'll learn over time that rules and regulations come and go. Things change. But the one thing that never changes is that business goes on no matter what happens, and yours will too if you don't let the changes freak you out. And if Tax the Internet ever DOES come to pass for home-based business, don't worry about figuring out the ten thousand different tax rates. Somebody will come up with a App that actually works and makes it simple. The State governments that want the tax money will make SURE of THAT. It really is sick. When you really think about it, it’s a crying shame. I mean, why won’t we just let each other shine? Why is it that we so reflexively doubt and mock each other’s highest ambitions? And why are we so timid about sharing our goals and dreams with the ones we love? We should celebrate each other’s aspirations. Support them. Lift each other up. But we don’t. It’s weird how that works, huh? In today’s episode of The Quote of the Day Show, our friend Bob Proctor tells the story of what happened when the other firemen at his station found out about his goal. It wasn't pretty. He also reveals the REAL purpose of money. Join Bob next February at his LIVE Fourth Dimensional Leadership event. Attend live in Los Angeles, or stream it in your home or office. I’ll be telling you more about it over the next couple months. Maybe I’ll get Bob back on The SC Sessions to talk about it. For now, learn more below. www.bobproctorlivestream.com See you tomorrow with our first Fan Friday QOD episode!
