**This episode is Part II - Listen to Part I HERE*David is a mental health speaker, educator and holds certifications in Mental Health First Aid for adults and youth, SafeTALK (Suicide Awareness for Everyone), and the suicide prevention technique known as QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer), which he mentions in this episode. In Part I, David shared his story around a day like no other - the day he was going to end his life jumping off of the Foresthill Bridge in California, the 4th highest bridge at 730 feet. A passerby followed their intuition and called 9-1-1 and, his life was saved that day. But, that was only the beginning of his lifelong battle with clinical depression. As he describes it, David found his way from "mental hellness to mental wellness." Through his experience of owning and operating a non-adoption animal sanctuary where he and his then-wife took in animals that were sick, lame, or old - he relates his life through stories of working with the animals and what they taught him over the years. In Part II, David shares some practical advice for loved ones who witness someone suffering from suicidal ideation and depression and two thoughts: what I call myths of suicide prevention. We talk about the role forgiveness played in his life and road to mental wellness and how he's found his way from self-loathing to self-love (which, for him, has been an ongoing challenge). Through the storytelling, he helps the topic of depression, suicidal ideation, and mental health overall be more relatable and helps others to see those struggling with more compassion. Some of my favorite "Wisdom-Drops" from David in both episodes:"People don't die of mental illness,' David says, 'they die from hopelessness." "Connection creates hope. And, hope saves lives.""Sometimes, what hurts the most cannot be seen. And sometimes, what helps the most is easy to do.""Four words that changed my life [as said by my psychiatrist]: It's not your fault.""If people don't feel connected, the door stays shut.""Without mental health, there is no health.""Hope awakens harmony."Resources from both episodes:David Woods Bartley TEDx Talk: How Connection Saved My LifeKrista Tippett - TEDx Talk on CompassionJohann Hari - TEDx Talk: Everything You Know About Addiction is WrongDr. Rachel Naomi Remen, author - Kitchen Table WisdomDr. Paul Quinnett & the Q.P.R. This podcast presents the second segment of our four-part series ‘Beethoven Variations: A Poet’s Journey through the Music and Life of Beethoven’ with renowned British poet Ruth Padel and eminent pianist Karl Lutchmayer. This series has been put together by Prateeti Punja Ballal. In Part II of the series, Ruth and Karl take us through the years when Beethoven contemplates suicide, then decides to ‘live for his art’. Inspired at first by the French Revolution, and Napoleon whom he regards as ‘a man of the people,’ and also by falling deeply in love, Beethoven writes a series of innovative masterpieces. In the series, Ruth takes us on an intimate journey through Beethoven’s life and music, illustrated by her poetry from her recent book. Professor of Poetry at King’s College London, she has written many collections of poetry, and books of non-fiction and fiction. Her earlier book Darwin: A Life in Poems, released on Darwin’s centenary, captured her great great grandfather memorably. Concert pianist and lecturer, Karl Lutchmayer held an academic lectureship at the Trinity College of Music in London, now Trinity Laban, for fifteen years. He has played at all the major London concert halls and across the world, and his London lecture-recital series, Conversational Concerts, garnered critical and public acclaim. Karl will perform Beethoven’s music for us and give us his insights into its composition and context.
If you walk into a room with ten people and two of them are entrepreneurs, how would you recognize the two on sight? You probably would not until you started a conversation with them. Once in a conversation, you may recognize certain traits or a certain mindset often associated with entrepreneurs, but this does not mean that those two entrepreneurs are alike. Not all entrepreneurs follow the same path to get to where they are. In part I of this series we discussed how innovation is a component of entrepreneurship, in this episode we discuss how not every entrepreneur approaches innovation in the same way. In Part II of this 2-Part series we discuss the Entrepreneurial Mindset and Journey, and the different ways entrepreneurs approach the journey. We explore the contribution of different entrepreneurial styles and how they can contribute to teams and to the different stages in the entrepreneurial journey.

In December 2019 at the onset of COVID-19, we saw a wide array of responses form businesses and entrepreneurs. Many businesses moved their activities online while entrepreneurs sought out new opportunities in the crisis. But the one thing we did see was innovation. German Breweries started making hand sanitizers and tech companies developed tracking and tracing apps. Essentially innovation blossomed in light of the crisis. This episode is Part I of a 2-Part series that explores innovation and entrepreneurship. In this episode, we discuss the routes of innovation, how we can foster innovation and its relationship to entrepreneurship. In Part II we explore the Entrepreneurial Mindset and Journey. Why is this so important? Because Innovation increases our chances to react to changes and discover new opportunities. Entrepreneurship propels us forward with new solutions, helping us embrace change. This series provides us with timely insight into both innovation and entrepreneurship.

In Part II of this engaging conversation with Susan Trivers, the growth guru details her proven perspectives on unlocking the full potential of an organization as well as the role of leadership in balancing personal and professional goals. Getting her clients to understand their own value is only part of the puzzle...her most successful students learn to maximize the value of every resource at their disposal, and so this episode continues to explore her expertise.[0:54] Do You Value Your Value?A value-driven pricing structure is key to the sustained growth of a business. When considering the consumer cost of a product or service, everything from labor and material costs to speed of delivery and development time should be accounted for in the total price, as in the end any company is in the business of selling solutions. Outcome, not input, is the central factor to consider when determining a pricing structure that works for you...how does what your company offers affect the results your clients can expect when compared with the available alternatives?[4:51] The GO CurveSusan Trivers' GO Curve is one of her signature visual tools for helping companies turn client data into actionable information. Her breakdown of the instructive graphic separates buyers into three main categories: testers, regulars, and enthusiastic fans. These categories of client all have different levels of engagement with your brand. Optimally, a company can move "testers" into "regulars" and translate their regular clientele into dedicated support, and so a key to growth lies in offering products and services that appeal to each of them.[9:12] Building a MachineAdding to your arsenal is indispensable to expanding your reach and scope. For example, developing a new product or service is an investment in and of itself. You need people dedicated to not only giving the concept a concrete shape, but devising a comprehensive plan for presenting it to the people most likely to buy it. Nationally, hiring this additional personnel requires cash, and organizations can both bolster their ability to compete and lower their taxable earnings by investing in development of a new product or service.[13:48] The Long GameWhile minimizing tax liability for your company through consistent R&D and drawing a comfortable salary for retirement are both equally valid goals, they can often work at cross purposes. It is important for your organization's financial advisor to understand what your goals are. Trivers advises a yearly consultation with your CPA or CFO to review your current strategy and decide whether to aim for rapid growth or reliable returns.Through savvy resource management, companies can break through the plateau and consistently achieve new heights. Chapter 5 - Peace Is Selective from Cultivating Inner Peace by Paul R. Fleischman, M.D. "In Part II, I discussed the dynamic quality of peace, the action of returning, like a compass needle to the north. Selecting peace is different, more like writing a song. You quell the sounds of the traffic around you, and a halting tune emerges. If you let it rise and expand, but at the same time contain it, you may happen upon the invisible coherence of melody, which then flows like a stream, bounded and directional. Melody isn’t merely pretty sound, but an organized, integrated channel. You have to push aside distraction—not just noise, but even tangential charm—in order to hear a melody ripple downhill within you."
