From the audio to the visual, we delve into the wondrous world of the album sleeve with Bill Smith, of Bill Smith Studios, responsible for some wonderful images in the 80s. 1. THE JAM (1977-1981) After getting his foot in the door at Polydor in the 70s, Bill has a breakthrough with The Jam. He is responsible for the artwork for all their albums up to and including Sound Affects as well as a number of single sleeves. More importantly, he has one shot at the iconic The Jam logo. RIP Rick. 2. THE CURE (1979-80)From mod to goth, Bill moves from the immediacy of The Jam to the more surreal, indie world of The Cure. Bill discusses working on their first three  LP's. One a bit of an outlier in their back catalogue,  the other more typical. But which household appliance WAS Robert Smith??3. GENESIS (1980-83)  Another contrast, this time the prog-rockers entering their 80s pop period with some truly iconic sleeves for Duke, Abacab and Genesis. Fortuitious accidentslead to the iconic Abacab sleeve. AI won't/can't do that shit.Discussion moves onto discussing copyright and who owns the rights to artwork; the artist or the designer. Then talk on the general LP artwork package; sleeve, back sleeve, inner sleeve, disc labels, etc ending on why he didn't do the cover to Invisible Touch.4. THOMAS DOLBY (1981-82)A very special collaboration with former guest, Thomas Dolby, leads to uniquely brilliant artwork for The Golden Age of Wireless and related singles.5. NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC (1983)Nowt more iconic in the UK than the Now series and Bill was there from Vol 1.billsmithstudios.com80sography@gmail.comTwitter @80sographyBlue Sky @80sographySend us a text

Die drei verbliebenen Genesis-Mitglieder schufen mit „And then there were three“ (1978) ein selbstironisch-programmatisches Album, das ihre Lage ausdrückte. „Follow me – follow you“ bescherte der Band einen unverhofften Singlehit. Ihre Album-Klassikern heißen u.a. „Trespass“, „The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway“ „ebenso „Abacab“, „Invisible Touch“ und „We Can't Dance“. Die große Frage momentan: Ist die laufende „The Last Domino?“-Tour, benannt nach einem Genesis-Song und versehen mit einem dicken Fragezeichen: der Abschied nach 57 Bandjahren? Das ist ein Thema, vor allem aber geht um einen DER Genesis-Klassiker: „Land Of Confusion!“ Reinhorchen unbedingt erwünscht!

I saw Genesis twice. Once in 1980, and then the next year. As I had worn out the grooves of Seconds Out, their live record from 1977, I somehow expected a duplication of the same, which meant playing some of those wonderful tracks from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. I remember them doing lots of tracks off of the album Duke, which was fine, but the next year, when Abacab came out, it was, I knew, time to move on to other things.  The main line-up of Genesis during their glory days was Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, Steve Hackett, and Phil Collins.  Rutherford and Banks wrote "Squonk". Tony Banks wrote "Mad Man Moon" and "One For The Vine".  For chrissakes. So what happened? I dunno. Pay me and I'll tell you. I have an idea.    Peter Gabriel - A Wonderful Day In A One-Way World (1978) Any prog fan worth her salt recognizes that Chapman Stick being played by the most famous progenitor of the same, Tony Levin. Aside from being in King Crimson, he was in the movie "One-Trick Pony" with Paul Simon. But there's the Chapman Stick.  Anthony Phillips - Musical Box (demo) (1969) The opening track from the band's third album, Nursery Cryme, was, as you hear here, the birth-child of Anthony Phillips.  Anthony Phillips - Um & Aargh (1979) The drummer is Michael Giles, the drummer for King Crimson's first two albums. King Crimson's family tree, especially in the Prog world, is deep and wide.  Brand X - Nuclear Burn (1976) Phil Collins side-project that started off in the Mahavishnu-Chick Corea vein of Electric Jazz, but, like everything Phil Collins touched, devolved into pure pop.  Flaming Youth - Mars and Jupiter (1969) Phil Collins' pre-Genesis band recorded one album, Ark 2, a concept album about "the evacuation from a dying Earth". It's not bad. I think lots of these bands in the early days of Prog were trying to resolve Sgt. Pepper and The Beatles' affection for and use of old Music hall tropes with Robert Fripp's dexterity and distortion.  Genesis - A Winter's Tale (1968) This single pre-dates their debut album, From Genesis To Revelation (1969) Genesis - Hair on the Arms and Legs (1967) Genesis - It's Yourself (1976) B-side of "Ripples". There's a section that sounds like "Los Endos" as if it were meant to be a segue of sorts. this is from the Trick of the Tail sessions, the first album after Peter Gabriel left. It's a great record.  Genesis - One-Eyed Hound (1968) Genesis is a band with lots of pre-fame rarities that are worthy of a listen, if only for Gabriel's authoritative voice. Their first album sold 650 copies. Genesis - Patricia (1967) Genesis - Shepherd (1970) Genesis - The Day The Light Went Out (1978) B-side of the "Many Too Many" single.  Genesis - Try a Little Sadness (1967) Tony Banks is a more prominent backing vocalist on these early sides. Good? Bad?  Genesis - Inside and Out (1978) The Spot The Pigeon EP was released when we would have bought a Genesis Taxidermy Kit if we had the money. But the more I heard it, the more I realized that there was a really fundamental shift in the basic tenets of one of my favorite bands. According to Wikipedia: "The song was performed several times on the Wind & Wuthering tour in 1977. The first section, "Inside", concerns a man who is wrongfully imprisoned of rape. The second section "Out", is an instrumental passage that represents the man's freedom." Mike Rutherford - Hideaway (1982) Mike Rutherford sings with the inflections of Phil Collins and the pipes of a drunken Dennis Wilson. Some of the drums on this album by Stewart Copeland. They were on the same polo team. The same polo team. The same fucking polo team.  Peter Gabriel - Moribund the Burgermeister (1977) Nothing but quality from this great. The more I listen the more I realize that he was the heart and soul of that group. Genesis was a different, much less chance-taking group when he left. They must have known this when they heard this album the first time.  Peter Gabriel - Biko (1980) Phil Collins played drums on this record, but if you listen, there are no cymbals on the entire thing.  Peter Gabriel - No Self Control (1980) Robert Fripp appears. He of King Crimson. See? I never said Phil Collins was not a master. He is and was. But the Genesis that old people like me love is the one with this guy sitting in the studio and saying "Why not?" "No cymbals. Why not?" Robert Fripp appears on the album. He of King Crimson. See? Phil Collins - Tomorrow Never Knows (1981) From his first solo album, which marked the beginning of the subsumption of the entire pop landscape in the '80s.  Robert Fripp - Here Comes The Flood (1979) PG on lead vocals. Steve Hackett - Tigermoth (1979) Mike Rutherford - Time And Time Again (1980) Released two solo records, and then formed Mike and the Mechanics.  Tony Banks - A Curious Feeling (1979) In the words of the Mighty Lew, why are all the solo albums by the two main Genesis songwriters so bland and safe? Could it be David Hentschel's ever-repeating production tricks? He says it's all down to chemistry. I honestly think that the core had the feeling there wasn't anything they couldn't do. And when people started leaving, that precious balance dissipated and mutated.  Tony Banks - This Is Love (1983)  Genesis - That's Me! (1969) Genesis - Supper's Ready (coda) (1972) I am saying this because it's my show and I want to tell you. After Peter Gabriel sings "The new Jerusalem..." the band plays the coda chords for a while. If you own the original vinyl version, you might listen to the fade-out. There's a bass pedal mistake at the very end that was corrected when they mixed it for CD release.

Almost 20 years ago, Kay Laurence developed a game to teach communication skills and learning concepts to students.Over the years, Gen Abacab has been used in universities, schools and seminars for human and dog training, and on ships in the middle of the Caribbean. Just as doing a task is not the same as learning a task, experiencing the learning process is not the same as observing the learning process. Experiencing and learning skills of puzzle solving are unique to each individual - person, dog, chicken. The Gen Abacab game is a valuable experience for learner and teacher and everyone should have experience in both roles. Experience of poor teaching is as valuable as much as experience of good teaching. Good teaching will leave the learner enthused, satisfied, confident and "expanded" !On the Learning About Dogs website, look for the members section. Most bands make their first album the eponymous one, but Genesis waited until their twelfth studio album to name it  Genesis.  This one continues the trend toward pop that started with "Abacab" and "Three Sides Live," but maintains the prog rock and art rock connections of their roots.  By this time Genesis consisted of Mike Rutherford on keyboards, Tony Banks on guitar, and Phil Collins on drums and lead vocals.  Collins would become a celebrity shortly after this album was released.Folks, there's not a bad song on this entire album.  We hope you enjoy this salute to Genesis as much as we enjoyed making it.“Home By the Sea”This deep cut tells the story of a burglar who unwittingly breaks into a haunted house, and is subjected to the stories "As we relive our lives in what we tell you."  The album cut for this song drifts into a largely instrumental and percussion piece called "Second Home By the Sea."“Illegal Alien”Phil Collins dons a fake accent for this political but tongue in cheek take on the American immigration situation in 1983.  The bridge consists of a sample of street sounds.  "Over the border there lies the promised land where everything comes easy.  You just hold out your hand."“Job to Do”This rocking deep cut has a keyboard sound more reminiscent of Abacab.  Collins would pull away from intensely focusing on Genesis to spend more time with family after this album.  Genesis is unusually talented at the transitions in their songs.“Silver Rainbow”This low key track has a lot of fantasy and prog rock elements.  "But if you're sitting there beside her and a bear walks in the room, and you keep on going, 'cause you're unaware..."ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:R.E.M. - Radio Free Europe  R.E.M. made their debut on the David Letterman show this month.STAFF PICKS:“It Must Be Love” by MadnessBrian's staff pick is from the group better known for "Our House."  This song received some air play on radio and video, but Madness was much more popular in the UK. “Promises, Promises” by Naked EyesThis first wave, synth-driven song screams early 80's.  Naked Eyes formed after the breakup of the band "Neon."  The other members of "Neon" formed the group "Tears for Fears." “Monkey On Your Back” by Aldo NovaBruce's staff pick is from Canadian singer and producer Aldo Nova, and tells a story of lives destroyed by drugs, "a dragon that bites a hole in his arm at night." “Mirror Man” by the Human LeagueRob continues the synth pop trend of this week.  The Human League sang with a British accent, somewhat unusual in the music of the time.  The Human League still tours today.  The Mirror Man was revealed to be Adam Ant many years after the song's release. LAUGH TRACK:“Far From Over” by Frank StalloneThis is the only top 10 song from "Staying Alive," the underwhelming sequel to “Saturday Night Fever.”
