Following the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney, the Star Wars brand came roaring back with the blockbuster release of the J.J. Abrams directed Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, a film that still holds the record for highest grossing at the domestic box office. But, following Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi, an extremely divisive sequel directed by Rian Johnson, Lucasfilm president Kathleen hoped to correct matters by bringing Abrams back for the trilogy capper, Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. And while the film did well at the box office, critics and fan reaction was almost unanimously negative, tarnishing the brand and relegating it to streaming for the better part of the decade. But is it really that bad? Join Sebastian, Chris and Rodney as they struggle with wayfinders, argue over what constitutes a "memberberry", and welcome back an Emperor who somehow returned.
When Hollywood director Rian Johnson started making Wake Up Dead Man, the new Knives Out mystery (a movie you can watch on Netflix), he needed some help. His uncle and aunt in Denver connected him with their pastor in Denver, Father Scott Bailey, who became an advisor to the project. He talks about the process and the big questions of this movie with me. (And I admit: I hated the beginning and stopped watching a few minutes in. After reading about Fr Scott online and finding several Catholic sources who praised the movie, I gave it another look. I'm glad I did, because I think it's not only entertaining but also important … and beautiful.) How can Secrets and Clues motivate characters? "Getting information puts your character in danger. And danger rewards your character with information." — One of three ideas we steal from game design in this episode. In this two part series, we talk about how secrets, clues and hidden information motivate characters and may (or may not) help you plot from a character perspective. Part One (this episode) looks at WAKE UP DEAD MAN; while Part Two looks at SIDE EFFECTS, and the pilot episode of SHRINKING. The other two (related) ideas are: Landmark information (characters just have it), Secret (they know it's there, need to unlock it), and Hidden (invisible until they pay the cost) Narrative velocity — are characters pushed forward or are they pulled forward? To that end, in this episode Stu, Chas and Mel start with the murder mystery (ostensibly the easier deep-dive): Rian Johnson's WAKE UP DEAD MAN. But this is a complex film made even more complex by being a dual-protagonist film. Uhuh. Benoit Blanc is pulled through the story by his need to solve the case; Father Judd pushed through, against his will, to prove his innocence. Breaking down how that plays out — and why it matters for the kind of escalation each character can sustain — is the heart of the episode. And inevitably we go on some tangents: pointers, plants, and underpinnings (from our Everything Everywhere All At Once episode) fair play in locked-room mysteries, Narrative POV (as always) and node-based plotting and what dungeon-crawl game design has to do with writing a web of clues. "The way those secrets were hidden, revealed, and discovered were all rooted in the characterization." — Mel Killingsworth Like this episode? Discuss with our Patrons on Patreon. Or on Reddit! for the full episode join the Patreon [patreon.com/fashiongrunge] This is one of those films that hits you like a ton of 'bricks' (ha). When I first saw the trailer on a "Focus Features" DVD I knew this was one that I had to see. In Rian Johnson's directorial debut, this modern film noir weaves quite a knot that slowly unties throughout the course of the story. Joseph Gordon-Levitt carries every scene which reminded me of his other indie films in the early 00s that I loved so much. I get into why this story and visual style reminds me of Donnie Darko, how Focus Features was equivalent to A24 back in the day, the minimal normie yet important fashion, and try to work out the illogical parts of what the hell was actually going on. "Throw one at me if you want, hash head. I've got all five senses and I slept last night, that puts me six up on the lot of you." --- Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! How We Seeez It! Episode 330, Wake Up Dead Man “You're right. It's storytelling. The rites and the rituals. Costumes, all of it. It's storytelling. I guess the question is, do these stories convince us of a lie? Or do they resonate with something deep inside us that's profoundly true, that we can't express any other way except storytelling?” — Father Jud Another Knives Out movie. Rian Johnson brings back Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc for another whodunit. Josh O'Connor is incredible as Father Jud, and Josh Brolin is great as Monsignor Wicks. It's different in style from the other Knives Out movies, but it still brings some of the same flair that made the others so enjoyable. Prepare for a chat about the most polarizing chapter of the sequel trilogy with the Star Wars Escape Pod's "Bogan's Advocate" session for The Last Jedi. In this episode, the crew tackles the subversion of expectations head-on, from the startling introduction of a disillusioned Luke Skywalker to the "no-twist" revelation of Rey's parentage. While the crew marvels at the film's top-tier cinematography and striking use of red in the Snoke's throne room duel, they don't hold back on the pacing issues of some Canto Bight events or the introduction of new Force powers. It's a balanced, high-energy discussion that explores whether Rian Johnson's creative risks paid off or pushed the franchise too far off the predictable path. This episode dives into Looper, Rian Johnson's acclaimed 2012 time‑travel thriller, through a conversation recorded at San Diego Comic‑Con with writer‑director Rian Johnson and his cousin, composer Nathan Johnson. The film's blend of noir, futurism, and moral complexity makes it a standout in modern sci‑fi, and this discussion explores how its world was built—musically, narratively, and philosophically. Looper follows Joe, a contract killer (“looper”) who executes targets sent back from the future. When his future self is sent back to be killed, the loop collapses, forcing both versions of Joe into a collision of motives, ethics, and timelines. The film is known for its grounded approach to time travel, its emotional stakes, and its refusal to offer easy answers.

Whether it was Sally Field as The Flying Nun or Julie Andrews playing a novitiate in The Sound of Music, audiences used to watch priests and nuns and ministers — unremarkably — as part of American life on screen. But that all went away, and Rob Long is well aware why that is. Church attendance declined steadily for decades, and the stigma around religion has become unavoidable. Which made it all the more impressive how Rian Johnson brought faith to the screen in one particular scene of Wake Up Dead Man: an embodiment of what prayer does for people. Transcript here. Luke, Matt, and Westy gather round the Thrombey estate to investigate Rian Johnson's modern whodunit masterpiece. We tell the story of how Johnson wrote the script on spec, assembled a murderers' row of A-listers, and turned every detective movie convention inside out, all while giving Daniel Craig the most gloriously absurd accent of his career. From the casting battles to the donut hole speech, we dig into the craft, the chaos, and why this film made studios remember that original screenplays still pack houses. The Last Jedi is almost certainly the most divisive Star Wars movie ever made. A brave attempt by writer/director Rian Johnson to subvert audience expectations and take the franchise in a new direction, it's a film that impressed critics with its brave narrative choices but alienated huge sections of the fan base at the same time. The three of us watched this together at the cinema - Rob enjoyed it, Dave and Nath not so much. Will the subsequent 9 years have softened or sharpened those initial opinions? How do we all feel about that Princess Leia in space scene? And why does Kylo Ren need to take his top off? Mike explores the success of Rian Johnson's appropriate casting and display of a priest in the midst of impossible odds. Find out what Fr. Rian Johnson (KNIVES OUT, LOOPER, STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI) joins Meg for a deep craft conversation about balancing bold, high-concept ideas with intimate emotional storytelling. Rian breaks down how character - not plot mechanics - is the engine behind mystery, world-building, and genre, from crafting unforgettable character introductions to using theme as a dramatic misdirection tool. They also explore how emotion drives high-concept rules, how to write suspects with clarity, and why outlining is essential when juggling complex narratives. A masterclass in marrying big ideas with human stakes from one of today's most distinctive storytellers. --- Looking for more support on your writing journey? Rian Johnson's new Knives Out film, 'Wake Up Dead Man,' is sparking conversations few mainstream movies ever touch — faith, forgiveness, power and what it actually means to follow Jesus in a polarized world. In this episode, we talk with the filmmaker about growing up in the Church, walking away from faith and why Christ's teachings — especially “love your enemy” — still shape the stories he wants to tell. Johnson opens up about wrestling with the us-versus-them mentality, the corrupting pull of power and influence, and why he wanted to portray Christian belief with empathy rather than caricature.Plus, the RELEVANT crew debates the best Christmas movie of all time in a chaotic bracket showdown, reacts to surprising year-end culture stories and discusses new research suggesting adolescence doesn't actually end until age 32.HIGHLIGHTS:01:40 – Why 'Wake Up Dead Man' Feels Like a Gospel Story04:00 – Serving vs. Fighting: Faith and the Culture War06:45 – Why Culture Is More Open to Spiritual Conversations09:20 – Is Wake Up Dead Man the Best Knives Out Movie?12:10 – Is Rian Johnson Done With Faith?13:10 – Christianity vs. Church Culture20:15 – RELEVANT Buzz22:00 – Forrest Frank Breaks Into Google's “Hum to Search” List26:30 – Theo Von and Morgan Wallen's Bible Study Revealed32:00 – Rian Johnson on Growing Up Evangelical34:00 – “Arms Wide Open vs. Fists Up” Faith Explained39:00 — SLICES39:20 – New Research Says Adolescence Lasts Until Age 3245:15 – AI Reality TV Is Here (Unfortunately)47:30 – Christmas Movie Bracket ChallengeAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

My guest today is director Rian Johnson, which is exciting for me, because I've been a huge fan of his ever since seeing his first feature film, ‘Brick,' in 2006. Since then, he's made six more feature films, including ‘Looper‘ in 2012; ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘ in 2017; the murder mystery ‘Knives Out‘ in 2019; and his most recent movie, another in the 'Knives Out' series, ‘Wake Up Dead Man,‘ which is already out in theaters, and comes to Netflix on December 12. I talked to Rian about a piece of music that had a profound impact on him, which was the overture to ‘Das Rheingold‘ by Richard Wagner. For more info, visit songexploder.net/rian-johnson.
