Welcome back to the Lecker Book Club. Every month I'll pick a newly released food related book and talk to the author about the process of writing it. I'll also be writing about it on Substack and Patreon. Join me there as well! In Made in Taiwan, Taipei based journalist Clarissa Wei beautifully captures the food and spirit of this proud island nation, and brings it to life on the page. The book is stunning - you'll hear more about the thought and consideration that Clarissa and her team put into how it looks as well as what it says later in this interview -and it examines the current state of Taiwanese food in incredible breadth and depth. For me, someone completely new to the food of the country, it's a beautiful and rich education. It was such a pleasure to meet Clarissa via video chat and talk about this book, which involved an astonishing amount of research and recipe development on the ground. I'm a big fan of her work as a journalist - the podcast series she made with Whetstone Radio Collective, Climate Cuisine, is one of my all time favourite listens - and it was so interesting to hear how she approached this book, the subject of which is something hugely personal to her but one which she wanted to approach journalistically, and write as an act of documentation. We talked about how missing home through food sometimes takes unexpected, shifting forms, her culinary collaborator on the book Ivy Chen, and why it was crucial that Made In Taiwan moved away from its original proposal as a “cosy” cookbook and became something deeply political. Made In Taiwan is out now, published by Simon and Schuster. Find all of the Lecker Book Club reads on my Bookshop.org list. Happy Friday folks! This week's episode is a wee bit late because it's a live show (!!!) which means the audio gave us a slight technical run-around. But it's a fun one, for sure, in which we chat with Katie Parla in front of a live audience at our beloved Omnivore Books in San Francisco. First — last week, I shared the New York Times profile of B. Dylan Hollis, and this week the NYT is back (via Salt + Spine friend Priya Krishna) with a full feature on TikTok stars and how they're changing the name of the cookbook game. “[Hollis] is one of several TikTok creators, many of them with little or no professional cooking experience, who have gone from tinkering in their home kitchens to topping best-seller lists in a remarkably short time. In the process, they've shot a jolt of energy into a sagging cookbook market.”Now, let's head to Italy…* Hey there, do you love Salt + Spine? We'd love if you shared this email with a friend who might want to #TalkCookbooks with us, too:Episode 160: Katie ParlaIn this week's episode, Katie joined me in front of an audience at Omnivore Books in San Francisco to discuss:* The cuisines of Italy's islands—which involve less fish and seafood than you might think;* Her decision to self-publish her latest cookbook, Food of the Italian Islands—and why she'll keep self-publishing in the future; * What she wishes she knew when she first moved to Italy 20 years ago.Plus, as always, we put Katie to the test in our signature culinary game.Food of the Italian Islands by Katie ParlaA transportive cookbook inviting readers through Sicily, Sardinia, and Italy's lesser-known island destinations so you can sink your teeth into the secrets of their rustic, romantic dishes. Katie Parla will take you through the streets of Palermo where her great-grandfather was born, across the caper fields of volcanic Pantelleria, into the kitchens of Sardinia for lessons in ornate pasta making, and to the pristine waters of Ponza to dive for sea urchins. And no island adventure with Katie would be complete without a jaunt through the Venetian lagoon on her fishing boat Laura! But Food of the Italian Islands isn't just an island journey with your favorite Jersey girl. There are also over 85 recipes, both original and reimagined, that showcase the allure of the islands, including pane frattau featuring Sardinia's beloved flatbread; bigoli in salsa, a party pasta popular in Venice; coniglio all'ischitana, braised rabbIt in the style of Ischia; torta caprese, Capri's flourless chocolate-almond cake; and an array of pesto sauces from Pantelleria, Trapani, Linsoa, and Carloforte that will have you asking, “pesto genovese who?”We

For many countries in the Global South, tackling today's interlocking crises – climate change, the pandemic, the rising cost of living supercharged by Russia's invasion of Ukraine – is made practically impossible by sky-high interest rates on runaway government debt. Enter Barbados.  No world leader is being invoked more at the moment than Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley, along with her ambitious plan to change the global financial system to end crippling debt and build climate resilience: the Bridgetown Agenda.  For this episode of our podcast, Rethinking Humanitarianism, host Heba Aly sits down with two people close to the plan: Avinash Persaud, Mottley's special envoy on finance and investment; and François Jackman, the island nation's UN ambassador. Launched in September, the Bridgetown Initiative (as it is also known) lays out a step-by-step roadmap that begins by pressing the International Monetary Fund and other international financial institutions to unlock financing on more palatable terms for crisis-hit countries so they can better prevent and respond to disasters. It also calls for the setting up of a global mechanism to accelerate private sector investment in mitigation and reconstruction. In this special LawPod edition, veteran climate change negotiator, Ian Fry, a former representative of the island nation of Tuvalu and the Alliance of Small Island States, revisits the Glasgow Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention and the Paris Agreement (COP26), which took place between 31 October and 13 November 2021. Dr Peter Doran, of QUB Law School, and a senior writer/editor for the IISD's Earth Negotiations Bulletin at UN environmental negotiations, review the highlights of the Glasgow COP, examine the background to some of the big issues, and consider the growing gap between the incremental progress of UN-sponsored responses to the climate emergency and demands for radical system change from civil society. Ian Fry has been at the heart of the UN climate negotiations process for several decades, including negotiations leading up to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol and played an important role acting as negotiator for the pacific island state of Tuvalu. He takes a close interest in the fate of the small island states and the Least Developed Countries in the negotiations. Dr Doran describes the importance of the small island states as “the conscience of the UN climate change negotiations process”, the indigenous and most exposed people and cultures for whom a failure to achieve climate justice raises the very real prospect of their extinction.  “Madam President, The fate of my country rests in your hands.” Ian Fry, Lead Negotiator for Tuvalu, reduced the ill-fated Copenhagen COP in 2009 to silence as he brought proceedings to a halt in a heartfelt plea for a legally binding agreement.

A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin:   Tim Chng is one of the founders of ITASA (Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Students Association), and we've known each other since those college days. He is currently documenting the overseas Taiwan Independence Movement on Wikipedia.   I thought I'd invite him onto Talking Taiwan to talk about some of the media attention that Taiwan's been getting lately, and the project he's started to document the contributions of WUFI (World United Formosans for Independence) and overseas Taiwanese to the fight for Taiwan's freedom and democracy.   After a non-Taiwanese friend of mine texted me asking about who Enes Kanter was and why he was speaking up about Taiwan, I realized that it would be a good idea to do an episode about this and other celebrities who have shed light on Taiwan- for good and bad.   Enes Kanter, a basketball player for the NBA's Boston Celtics, has called for boycotting the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and caused quite a stir by tweeting and speaking out about Taiwan being a free and democratic country, and not a part of China. Twitter was all abuzz over this.   I had seen Tim weighing in on the Twitter discussion about Enes, so I thought it would be fun to invite him on to Talking Taiwan to share his thoughts on all of this.   I knew that we'd have an interesting conversation. We talked about Enes, John Oliver, John Cena and even Peng Shui, the Chinese women's tennis player whose safety and whereabouts have been in question ever since her post on a Chinese social media platform (Weibo) about being sexually assaulted by a retired Chinese Communist party leader was deleted.   Tim also talked about what motivated him to start documenting the Taiwan independence movement on Wikipedia, and how in a broader sense it is about recognizing the role of Taiwan's diaspora in the fight for Taiwan's freedom and democracy during the White Terror era.   If you're interested in helping Tim with this project you can do so simply by creating a login on Wikipedia, which as Tim said is really quite easy to do, and you can start editing and adding to the Wikipedia pages about WUFI or the Taiwan independence movement.     Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode:   The background of Enes Kanter NBA's Celtics team, has spoken up for Taiwan How Enes Kanter and his family has been blacklisted by the Turkish government How Enes' father went to prison for speaking up against Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Taiwan's blacklist Comparing the struggles and conflict that the Uyghers, and people of Hong Kong, Tibet and Taiwan's have with China Badiucao, the artist who created the art and designs for Enes Kanter's sneakers that called for a boycott of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and the Stand With Taiwan sneakers The perception that Taiwan's democracy was a direct result of Chiang Ching-kuo lifting martial law in Taiwan How the father (Dr. Kang-lu Wang) of one of ITASA's founders (Alvin Wang) was assassinated by the Kuomintang (KMT) What led Tim to start his project to document the Taiwan independence movement, especially the resistance movement amongst overseas Taiwanese How the resistance movement of overseas Taiwanese in the 1950s-1980s is not taught in history books and hasn't been well documented Documenting WUFI (World United Formosans for Independence) on Wikipedia How difficult it was to get media coverage on Taiwan in the 1950s-1980s How New Bloom was contacted and consulted by John Oliver's team for his segment about Taiwan How Taiwan needs allies and support as it stands up to China What is problematic about what Enes Kanter is saying about China Tsai Ing-wen's public statement thanking Enes Kanter for his support Whether or not the U.S. really cares about Taiwan's self-determination or freedom The KMT's network of overseas student spies during the martial law era How organizers of the first ITASA conference at Yale University received an anonymous intimidating letter How no one from Yale University was able to attend the Love Boat program in the year following the Yale ITASA conference How Tim and his family were blacklisted and not allowed to return to Taiwan What inspired many WUFI members and overseas Taiwan independence activists to stand up for Taiwan and to attempt to free Taiwan from authoritarian rule How Peter Huang who attempted to assassinate Chiang Ching-kuo was a WUFI member How many overseas Taiwanese students were inspired by the Cuban revolution How within WUFI there were members who were KMT spies The founding of WUFI in 1971 and how it united organizations in Japan, Europe, the United States, and Canada How WUFI members were responsible much of the U.S. media coverage on Taiwan The Taiwanese American Association of America (TAA), the grassroots arm of WUFI Fundraising efforts for the Taiwanese political drama Island Nation 2 What motivated Chiang Ching-kuo to lift martial law in Taiwan Tim's criticism of John Oliver's segment on Taiwan John Oliver's criticism of John Cena, the pro wrestler and actor who apologized to China after calling Taiwan a country What happened to Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai and what may have motivated her to speak about how she was sexually assaulted by Zhang Gaoli, a former high-ranking government official and member of the Chinese Communist Party The support that Peng Shuai has gotten from other professional tennis players The Women's Tennis Association's (WTA) reaction to Peng Shuai's statement about being sexually assaulted and her subsequent disappearance The pressure by the WTA and countries like Finland to cancel on the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Myanmar and the Free Burma movement China's Belt and Road Initiative Lithuania's support of Taiwan Tim's call for others to help contribute his Wikipedia project documenting the contributions of overseas Taiwanese (from all over the globe) to Taiwan's democratization and independence movement WUFI's 2021 paper calendar commemorating WUFI's 50thanniversary How Professor Chen Wen-chen was part Haiti: Kidnapping and Crime Gangs like 400 Mawozo pose risk beyond Island Nation

We can expect that the kidnap for ransom gang that is holding the American and Canadian Missionary group hostage is now seen on a different level. They have taken hostages from an aid agency before and gotten paid, this group the 400 Mawozo or 400 Marozo unclear which spelling is used one term means idiots the other simpletons or neardowells are far from their origins as a gang of drug and booze-crazed youths who committed crimes for the need for money. They are the real thing - a criminal gang terrorizing the Caribean country on the verge of collapse. If the gang and its leaders can hook up with haters of American groups and missionaries this could turn them into a far wider and wilder group beyond 400 - and Haiti into a base for crimanl piracy and terror that could make them be as bad as the horn of Africa or some areas for Sulu Sea. If or when the ransom is paid and the hostages are released, the gangs leadership is smart enough to know there will be at some point a reckoning - it may be in their best interest to see no harm comes to anyone in thier custody as they will one day have to face up to what is done and so will anyone who helps them. First, we hear from the White House, then from Canadian broadcaster CTV on their analysis of the situation - www.ctv.ca and whitehouse.gov are the audio souces. US and Canadian law enforcement know after this situation whatever the outcome - the gang and its backers in government in Haiti that allow it to exist - and expect they do have allies if they are committing 80% of the 380 kidnaps reported in the capital of Port-Ah-Prince alone. The country has its problems and it is likely this kidnapping had something to do with the border situation and the asylum seekers who were trying to enter the USA. Expect further that this will get worse with the gang growing stature and perhaps other gangs might be emboldened to hit targets in the Dominican Republic or beyond even up to Puerto RIco, The US has the means and capability and needs to remind this gang who and what they are dealing with at some point moving forward. I have seen this play out before with different groups some ideologues others who were in it purely for the money. On this is clear it may not happen soon but expect one day even a decade down the road those responsible had better hope none of the hostages are harmed. Becuase the wrath of a superpower can be fury beyond what they have ever seen. None of the kidnappers I know of who took part in attacks on Amrtivsnd ot Canadians for or westerners many of them ideologicial foes of the USA ended well, Many are not far off in Gitmo others are sleeping with the fishes. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mike-k-cohen/support

Documentation was produced connecting Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation to the trafficking of 23 Haitian children and 3 American children who were presumably orphaned in the aftermath of a massive earthquake on the Island Nation in 2010. Since the incident involves American citizens, it was the duty of a Military Tribunal to judge Clinton's culpability in the matter. Hillary was arrested in March. What can a beautiful tiny island nation teach us about OncoPT? A lot. Most importantly how to ensure patients get the care they desperately need when there aren't many OncoPTs around. Here in the US, we tend to focus on the big urban cancer centers & how to make them better. But we can't forget about our colleagues & patients in rural areas or even those in health care deserts, without access to multidisciplinary centers. Ameera Al Derazi is a physiotherapist in Bahrain (check out the map below) who is leading the OncoPT charge & crushing it. She shares how she got started, how she's helping patients now as one of the few OncoPTs in Bahrain, & how she's keeping her waiting list short so she can help more patients in a timely manner. For those of us newer to OncoPT sometimes feeling all alone in this big world, this is an amazing interview you'll love!

US Lease F-35s to Taiwan as Deterrent to China Threat to the Island Nation - Beyond the Matrix

The Telegraph reported that China has ramped up pressure on Taiwan with videos of a simulated major attack on the Island and an alleged “spying confession” of a Taiwanese businessman. Last Week during Taiwan’s National Day, President Tsai Ing-wen of the 24 million island nation had the temerity to “urge the Chinese Communist Party to engage in meaningful dialogue” on an equal basis. China has been making several demonstrations of force with its air force “crossing the Taiwan Straits” middle line. China has rejected any negotiations with Ms. Tsai’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government was elected in 2016. China is even peevish toward the proposal of the Kuomintang opposition party the KMT in Taiwan that has proposed “independence” and renewal of relations with the US. The semi-official Global Post of the Chinese Communist Party noted: “Taiwan's "Legislative Yuan" on Tuesday passed two proposals from the KMT, which are to "request the US to help confront the CPC," and "for the Taiwan Island and the US to resume diplomatic ties," Taiwan local media reported. The KMT also called on the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to "work actively" on these two issues. Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, responded by saying that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and both sides of the Taiwan Strait belonging to the same China is an unalterable historical and legal fact”. The Trump Administration further enraged the CCP by sending US Secretary for Health and Human Services Alex Azar, followed by Keith Krach, Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment to Taiwan. The RAND Corporation’s Derek Grossman, a senior defense analyst with the RAND Corporation and an expert in the region, said the approach went hand in hand with a strategy being referred to in the Pentagon as Fortress Taiwan. He told Express.co.uk: "For decades, the US has sought to bolster Taiwan’s defensive capabilities to prevent China from being able to successfully launch an amphibious invasion against the island, or to otherwise conduct military operations meant to harm it (such as a blockade or missile strikes)”. The question Grossman suggests is the “right mix. His suggestions; sea mines and anti-ship missiles. But Dr. Stephen Bryen, Former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense during the Reagan Era is someone who knows Taiwan’s has a better idea. In a Newsweek article he wrote of a suggestion he made at a lecture at Taiwan’s National Defense University in 2018: “I proposed having a standby force of F-35's in the U.S. that either would belong to Taiwan or be leased to Taiwan. That force would be available to respond to any retaliation by mainland China”. Bryen’s Newsweek article was immediately republished in Taiwan news outlets causing a flurry of attention. Rod Reuven Dovid Bryant and Jerry Gordon brought back Dr. Bryen to discuss his proposals for Taiwan and his views on the current conflict in the South Caucasus between Azerbaijan and Armenia with regional ramifications involving Russia, Turkey, Israel, and Iran. The following are takeaways from the interview with Dr. Stephen Bryen. On deterrent value of US leasing F-35 to Taiwan. Beyond the Matrix 14OCT2020 - PODCAST

Session 181 - A Gutter Skypes GodsToasting Special - Merry GodsToasting to All! Our Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition Adventure Continues with a Holiday Celebration on Quincunx! According the The Great Scholarly Wizard Gary of Pequanic - GODS-TOASTING is an annual Holiday Celebrated on the Island Nation of Quincunx, in the southern hemisphere of Zutain. Legend has it that Quincunx was very difficult to farm for the first settlers. And when a Cherry Orchard finally yielded a bountiful crop, the planters all gathered and lifted their glasses in a toast to the gods for helping, or at least allowing it to happen. The tradition was carried over each year... starting with a celebration dinner and a single Toast to whatever god any individual kept faith in. Over a hundred years it became a day of nearly continuous inebriation. Cultural variations of this celebration have worked their way in, and the introduction of Gifts being exchanged on the date became very popular. Also, the practice evolved of paying a small charitable fee to Arcane Practitioners with expertise in weather manipulation. They being called upon to cover as much of Quincunx with snow as possible thus giving both town and wild lands at least a single day of clean and pure. It is universally agreed among all temples and faiths that GodsToasting is a Time for Aiding light against the dark, Meting out Justice against the wicked, Helping others in time of need, and restoring as much balance as possible to the world. The community now surfs and takes care of their connected Ocean. Surfing also brought Easkey to Papua New Guinea to help build a surfing community and bring together local people. This community is growing stronger everyday by tackling a major issue in the Island Nation of domestic violence. The community painted the tip of their surf boards to show solidarity within their own community as well as show the abusers that their tyranny will not be tolerated.  Easkey is a person who is dedicated to facilitating social and environmental change through surfing and building close ties to communities.   Join the Arbonne Blue Team http://www.speakupforblue.com/teamblue Instagram: @speakupforblue SUFB Podcast: http://www.speakupforblue.com/podcast SUFB Website: http://www.speakupforblue.com 10 Ocean Tips to Conserve the Ocean: http://www.speakupforblue.com/wordpress/sufb_optinpdf
