“If I didn't have this fear, what could be better?” Jade Chang Sheppard has made it her mission to inspire women to ask and answer that question. On the surface, she seems to have fear *licked*. She built her own fortune in her 20s, birthed 3 gorgeous kids, had a successful marriage *and* divorce. She redesigned her life during a “mid-life awakening,” to include traveling the world to learn to surf. But it took an ayahuasca journey and surf epiphany to bring Jade to a new threshold, and you will want to follow her off that cliff. Jade's epiphanies turn into living workshops that she shares with the world! She bought a boutique hotel in Nicaragua (www.malibupopoyo.com) and turned it into an all-inclusive surfing heaven. She launched Scarletsociety.com, a multi-media miracle of phenomenal women speaking truth about sex, health and money for women over 40 (check out their peri-menopause guide). Jade also muses on non-monogamy (we take a pause in the early part of the podcast, but don't worry, we come back to it!) sexual experimentation, power, and freedom. For a surfalogue, she coversthe Maldives, Chicama, Kelly's Wave Pool, Bali, Nicaragua, CostaRica—girlfriend gets things done. One of the best things we get to hear from this accomplished, striving, powerful, self-realized woman, especially for those bad days: surfing is the hardest thing in the world to do. Get it, Jade!Checkout the articles, podcasts and more at www.scarletsociety.comPromise, you will want to stay at: www.malibupopoyo.comThis is the article Jade mentions by Dr. Stephanie Han (surfer and future pod guest): https://scarletsociety.com/why-do-so-many-women-in-this-country-fear-divorce/ BTW, I recommend reading everything you can find by the brilliant Dr. Han, especially her book of short stories https://drstephaniehan.com/swimming-in-hong-kong/

We loved this dark twisted book! BOOK BLURBS…. “A dark, delicious tale that will creep its way into your brain and leave you examining your own soul for signs of moral rot. I downed it in one greedy shot.” —Jade Chang, author of The Wangs vs. the World and “Tiffany Tsao’s visceral debut…reads a bit like Crazy Rich Asians if the book began with familicide instead of romance. . . Why not start off the new year with the perfect tear-it-all-down read?” —CrimeReads “In this riveting tale about the secrets and betrayals that can accompany exorbitant wealth, two sisters from a Chinese-Indonesian family grapple with the past after one of them poisons their entire family. Gwendolyn and Estella have always been as close as sisters can be. Growing up in a wealthy, eminent, and sometimes deceitful family, they’ve relied on each other for support and confidence. But now Gwendolyn is lying in a coma, the sole survivor of Estella’s poisoning of their whole clan. As Gwendolyn struggles to regain consciousness, she desperately retraces her memories, trying to uncover the moment that led to this shocking and brutal act. Was it her sister’s husbands abusive ways? Were the shifting loyalties and unspoken resentments at the heart of their opulent world too much to bear? Can Gwendolyn, at last, confront the carefully buried mysteries in their family’s past and the truth about who she and her sister really are?”….summary courtesy of Goodreads.

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family’s history that began before he was born — a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam — and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity. Asking questions central to our American moment, immersed as we are in addiction, violence, and trauma, but undergirded by compassion and tenderness, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is as much about the power of telling one’s own story as it is about the obliterating silence of not being heard.  With stunning urgency and grace, Ocean Vuong writes of people caught between disparate worlds, and asks how we heal and rescue one another without forsaking who we are. The question of how to survive, and how to make of it a kind of joy, powers the most important debut novel of many years. Vuong is in conversation with Jade Chang, author of The Wangs vs. the World.

I tend towards non-fiction over fiction, but I have recently gotten into queer YA fiction and if I read adult fiction it is either historical fiction or crime/suspense. For reference, I have read and loved almost every Nelson DeMille and Dan Brown book. I am not a fan of more traditional literature (think Jane Eyre, Pride & Prejudice etc) and my eyes tend to glaze over if an author takes two pages to describe a chair. Otherwise, I am pretty open and trust your recommendation! All the best, -Renee   2. Hello! I’m moving from Texas to Washington state in late August and would love recommendations for audiobooks to listen to during those 35 (!!!) hours of driving! I’d love something set in the Pacific Northwest, or on a cross country road trip. Fantasy (especially with folkloric elements) tends to be my favorite, but I also like mystery, horror, sci-fi, romance and post-apocalyptic. I’m a sucker for beautiful or descriptive prose, competent and clever protagonists, and weird magical people (or creatures). Bonus points for queer characters! Here is a link to my goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/9756176-rachel Thank you! -Rachel   3. I would love to find reading recommendation on books that talk about nutrition for those not on a diet. I don’t need to diet but i would like to know more about what is best to be putting in my body. Do you have any recommendations on where to start? Thank you!! I have found so many great books to read through your podcast! -Whitney   4. YA Non Fiction Needed! Rioters! I am in a quandary… Summer is sliding in and so too is the opportunity for brain drain if I don’t stack up some books for our rising Sophomore who has found respite from studies in scrolling, Tik-Toking, picture editing and other time burglaring activities. She’s got walls of books, all read, some re-read and most of which are fiction. She likes realistic fiction, suspense thrill, social justice, psychological thrillers, a lil true crime, maybe some romance, and doesn’t prefer to linger in long prose. Books that have moved from her shelf to nightstand lately are: Mosquitoland, You by Caroline Kepnes, Dumplin, Neverworld Wake, Home by Toni Morrison, This Is Where It Ends, Eleanor and Park and others. She likes scary movies, is a great playlist maker (I follow all her Spotify lists—they’re awesome). Nothing rattles or grosses her out. She’s a wicked artist and her caricatures are requested on TikTok all the time. She plays tennis and loves to win . I am hoping you can throw all this in your mix master and pour out some great Non Fiction that can grab a Sophomore’s attention. For this I’m infinitely grateful. Thank you soooooo much!! -Wynne   5. Hi, I love the podcast and I’m hoping you can help me. I’m a teacher looking forward to my summer vacation in a few weeks and I would love plenty of book recommendations for over the summer. I don’t really know a good way of defining what I liked to read other than I typically like relatively recent literary fiction, though I like plenty of lighter fare, too. I think I tend to like authors that write very plainly, as I seem to have little patience for overly wrought phrasing and writing that, to me, sounds too pretentious. I’m currently reading Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney and I could barely put it down to write this e-mail. Some books and authors I’ve particularly enjoyed are Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, Sourdough and Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan, all of Jhumpa Lahiri’s books, and Less by Andrew Sean Greer. I also enjoy some mysteries, especially the Dublin Murder Squad Series by Tana French. The problem is I am kind of a picky reader and there are plenty of books that I thought I would like that I end up quitting on after a hundred pages or so. Authors and books that haven’t clicked with me recently are The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead, What’s Not Yours is Not Yours by Helen Oyeyemi, Purity by Jonathan Franzen, The Wangs Versus the World by Jade Chang, and The Wife by Meg Wolitzer .I also tend to not love long books (anything over 450 pages). 350 pages seems to be the perfect amount for my attention span. What are your thoughts, based on what I’ve described about Ottessa Moshfegh’s books? I’ve read a few pages of both Eileen and My Year of Rest and Relaxation at bookstores and I was interested but I also wondered if I might end up hating them 5 chapters in. Maybe you can help me with my pickiness! Thank you for any recommendations. Best, -Kellie   6. Hello ladies! I’m working my way through the Read Harder Challenge and trying to find romance novels for as many of the prompts as possible – which has been really fun! Currently, I am looking for an #ownvoices romance novel from Mexico/Central America. I prefer queer, historical/fantastic themes to modern day settings, but Read Harder is all about getting out of your comfort zone so I’m open to anything. Thanks for your help

The book has been named a New York Times Editors Choice as well as best Book of the Year by Amazon, Buzzfeed, NPR, and others. Jade has appeared on national programs and she has spoken to audiences at universities and book festivals. According to NPR "Her book is unrelentingly fun, but it is also raw and profane—a story of fierce pride, fierce anger, and even fiercer love." She is also the contributing writer to The Good Immigrant USA. Her essay titled "How to Center Your Story" is the perfect ending to the book. They talk about her writing, the notion of the American Dream and how Jade felt "othered" after the 2016 elections. Become a supporter of this podcast:

Phoebe Lin and Will Kendall meet their first month at prestigious Edwards University. Phoebe is a glamorous girl who doesn't tell anyone she blames herself for her mother's recent death. Will is a misfit scholarship boy who transfers to Edwards from Bible college, waiting tables to get by. What he knows for sure is that he loves Phoebe. Grieving and guilt-ridden, Phoebe is increasingly drawn into a religious group--a secretive extremist cult--founded by a charismatic former student, John Leal. He has an enigmatic past that involves North Korea and Phoebe's Korean American family. Meanwhile, Will struggles to confront the fundamentalism he's tried to escape, and the obsession consuming the one he loves. When the group bombs several buildings in the name of faith, killing five people, Phoebe disappears. Will devotes himself to finding her, tilting into obsession himself, seeking answers to what happened to Phoebe and if she could have been responsible for this violent act. R.O. Kwon's The Incendiaries is a fractured love story and a brilliant examination of the minds of extremist terrorists, and of what can happen to people who lose what they love most. Kwon is joined by Jade Chang, author of The Wangs vs. the World.

Startup (Little Brown and Company) Doree Shafrir’s hilarious, smart debut Startup is set in the heart of New York City’s tech industry, where 36 is considered past your prime and a pole-dancing workshop is an acceptable Thursday evening activity with your co-workers. A veteran online journalist, Doree has written a hilarious and sharply observed novel about the difficulties of real-life connection in our hyper-connected world. Startup assembles a cast of indelible characters: Mack, the it-boy visionary of the moment trying to take his app to the next level; Isabel, a social media hero working for him a bit too closely; Katya, an ambitious Russian emigre journalist desperate for a scoop; and Sabrina, an exhausted mother of two whose inattentive husband happens to be Katya's boss. When a scandal erupts in the lower Manhattan loft building where all four work, they quickly discover just how small a world the Big Apple's tech community can be. A senior culture writer at BuzzFeed, Doree was inspired to write this novel by the follies and foibles of the startup world, and also in part by some of the scandals that plagued the tech industry in the last few years. Camille Perri, author of The Assistants, notes Startup “is chock-full of strong women transcending the workplace drama, sexual politics, and all-around dumb stuff the men in their life are doing. It’s a novel that just might spark the official feministing of startup culture.” This debut, already praised by Rumaan Alam, Joanna Rakoff, and Nick Bilton, is a sharp, hugely entertaining story of youth, ambition, love, money and technology's inability to hack human nature. Praise for Startup  “Is there a satirist alive more brilliant—and more insightful—than Doree Shafrir? That I tore through Startup in a single day—ignoring the cries of my children and the dinging of my phone, laughing with recognition at her characters’ foibles—is perhaps not nearly as significant as the fact that this ridiculously compelling novel has haunted me, every minute, in the weeks that followed. If you have ever lived in New York or worked in an office, you will love this novel. If you love the novels of Tom Perotta, you will love this novel. But also: If you are a sentient human, you will love this novel.”--Joanna Rakoff, author of My Salinger Year "Don't buy this book. Don't open. Don't start reading it. Because if you do, I can assure you, you won't be able to put it down. I was hooked from the first page and found myself lost in a beautifully-written fiction that so succinctly echoes today's bizarre reality."— Nick Bilton, Special Correspondent, Vanity Fair and author of Hatching Twitter: A True Story of Money, Power, Friendship, and Betrayal “This funny, empowering debut is chock-full of strong women transcending the workplace drama, sexual politics, and all-around dumb stuff the men in their life are doing. It’s a novel that just might spark the official feministing of startup culture. If I were a tech bro, I’d be shaking in my hoodie.”–Camille Perri, author of The Assistants Doree Shafrir has also been on staff at Rolling Stone, the New York Observer, Gawker, and Philadelphia Weekly, and has contributed to publications including the New York Times, the New Yorker, Slate, The Awl, New York Magazine, Marie Claire, and Wired. She grew up outside of Boston, lived in New York for nine years, and now resides in Los Angeles with her husband Matt Mira, a comedy writer and podcaster. Jade Chang has covered arts and culture as a journalist and editor. She is the recipient of a Sundance Fellowship for Arts Journalism, the AIGA/Winterhouse Award for Design Criticism, and the James D. Houston Memorial scholarship from the Squaw Valley Community of Writers. The Wangs VS. The World is her first book.

Jade Chang looked at the economic crash of 2008 and saw a novel.   This is just one of the many miraculous things about her. While the rest of us were running around like maniacs and freaking out, Jade started to see an idea come into form. What if a family lost everything in that crash? What would that look like? What if this character she had in her head was a self-made man who was crushed under the weight of what happened at that time? The answers to these and many other questions became The Wangs vs. The World, out in paperback this week and one of the most noteworthy books of last year.  I knew I had to speak to Jade after reading the book and laughing, feeling touched, amused, and heartbroken throughout reading it. It is a very special book for certain. So when I was lucky enough to meet her at a book event she led the q+a for, I grabbed the chance to invite her. I know I say all the episodes of the show are my favorite, but this one is absolutely my favorite as I share it with you. I had been dreaming about a discussion on character, and this one got so deeply into all of the aspects of character I find fascinating. I hope you all love Jade as much as I did. She's a wonder.  Show Notes | This episode brought to you by The Story Intensive See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
