FRAME cofounder and chief creative director, Erik Torstensson, is a pioneering figure in the fashion industry. He created Mr. Porter, co-founded and led creative agencies Saturday Group and Wednesday Agency, and co-founded and helmed Industrie magazine. With a keen eye for branding and digital strategy, Torstensson has successfully deployed unique marketing and communication approaches across his roles. He's driven FRAME's global reach through culture-catching campaigns and collaborations, often fronted by top talents like Gisele Bündchen, Karlie Kloss, and Amelia Gray. As an outside-of-the-box thinker, he shares insights into conscious design, digital strategy, brand partnerships, and his recent obsession with AI. Consistently setting new standards for what's contemporary, Torstensson advocates for curiosity, naivety, and the restless courage that comes from using an outsider's perspective to his advantage. Episode Highlights: Growing up as an only child on a farm in the Swedish countryside, Torstensson remarks on the importance of boredom to his creative development and the necessity of simply finding something to do. Slow-paced life didn't suit him. He began to enjoy traveling, dancing, and skateboarding, which held both collaborative and independent creative potential. After working at interiors magazine Wallpaper, Torstensson helped launch Industrie and Man About Town magazines—the former had cover stars like Anna Wintour, Edward Enninful, and Naomi Campbell. Outside of quantitative efforts in brand identity, ad campaigns, and editorial work, Torstensson says, “It's not really about you. It's about who you work with, who you surround yourself with.” FRAME was a community-led “passion project” stemming from Industrie. It was built not necessarily on denim but on the idea of perfecting any single product with a particular aesthetic in mind, in this case, “the FRAME woman.” Working on a budget to produce and market FRAME's aesthetic has led Torstensson to think out of the box. Torstensson discusses a brand's life cycle and its different versions, from starting out as a hot newcomer to becoming more organized and productive to later cutting through the media landscape with more sensational marketing. On the level of scale and production, AI gave Torstensson a great new tool he likens to Photoshop, making him quicker and more effective. Having a strong team, a partnership with Jens Grede, and the luxury of slowing down have gone hand in hand with an increase in confidence in his work over the years. He foregrounds the importance of knowing your strengths and leaning into them, going with your personal passions—“Just do it.” Torstensson recommends reevaluating what's contemporary and what will last every five years or so, not being afraid, and learning to evolve. Did you ever have at the beginning of pursuing a dream career someone along the way recommend taking the safe route (not the leap)? Deep in your heart you knew you had to attempt the full leap? This episode will inspire you to keep going for your dreams, listen to your intuition, and take your shot at success, no matter what. I have a special surprise for you today! In our episode, I am delighted to give my super talented niece, Jessica Brody, the guest spotlight! Watching Jessica grow up from this spunky, super smart, dog-loving, always curious young girl to a highly creative, successful writer has been one of the highlights of my life. She is the author of the #1 bestselling novel-writing guide, Save the Cat! Writes a Novel and is the founder of the online writing school, Writing Mastery Academy. She knew without a doubt she needed to give her love of writing a shot at success and not give up. Jessica explains how her beliefs about adulting overshadowed her childhood dream of being a writer. After exploring a career in finance, she got laid off from her corporate job and took that as a sign from the universe to begin her writing career by writing her first book. Jessica chose to follow her joy and intuition to Paris and write for a month while living in the city of lights - that lit up her dream to be a successful writer/author. 20 novels for teens, tweens, and adults later, she has a flourishing career as a writer, author, writing coach, and speaker. Some of her many books include The Geography of Lost Things, The Chaos of Standing Still, A Week of Mondays, 52 Reasons to Hate My Father, Amelia Gray is Almost Okay, the Unremembered trilogy, and the System Divine series, which is a sci-fi reimagining of Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, co-written with Joanne Rendell. Her books have been translated and published in over 20 languages and several have been optioned for film and television. She lives with her husband and three dogs near Portland, OR. Jessica is a beautiful example of following your joy and intuition for a fulfilling result. I hope this interview inspires you to keep going for your dreams. Read an excerpt from System Divine Trilogy for free here: https://www.jessicabrody.com/about-jessica/newsletter/ Access all of her writing resources and tools here: https://www.jessicabrody.com/writing-tips-and-tools/ Check out her writing academy at www.writingmastery.com - follow her on Twitter & Instagram @JessicaBrody
Jessica Brody is the author of the well-known writing book Save the Cat! Writes a Novel and teaches classes on this writing method, but she has published over 20 books for all ages, including middle grade. Her most recent, titled Amelia Gray is Almost Okay, came out in March of this year. Amelia is a kid who moves around a lot due to her father's job as a hotel renovator and reimaginer. Like a lot of middle schoolers, she is trying to figure out who she is and what she's good at. During one memorable summer in a new town, she decides to try on different personas to see which one fits best. Is she an athlete, a theater kid, or a reporter? What I loved about this book is that I could relate to it even as an adult. I still try different versions of myself sometimes. Jessica talks to us about what words in the English language really get under her skin, how being fired from MGM Studios gave her the writing opportunity she needed, and her overwhelming passion for spreadsheets. You can find Jessica at her website www.Jessicabrody.com and on her instagram at @jessicabrody. For show notes for any episode, go to our website at www.perksofbeingabooklover.com. You'll hear Don DeLillo say in this episode that “the best sort of television has almost replaced a certain kind of novel.” That's from a Writers Institute event nearly fifteen years ago, and while conversations about novelistic TV have changed since then, novelists continue to bring their sensibilities to television. Among those writers is Amelia Gray—author of startling short stories and novels—who's written for shows including Maniac and Mr. Robot. Gray says here that “TV is a writer's medium. In features they'll still take it away from you, and have you do a bunch of rewrites, and then it's the director's baby, and that's just how it is. But TV is so big and unwieldy that they need the writers.” On the subject of writers struggling with feature films, we listen to the novelist Russell Banks in conversation with Don DeLillo about their friend Nelson Algren, whose novel, The Man with the Golden Arm, was adapted into a 1955 Otto Preminger film with Frank Sinatra—a film Algren loathed. Banks has had happier experiences with film adaptations of his novels, on the other hand, and DeLillo's White Noise has now been adapted into a film by Noah Baumbach. The question is: what makes things go right or wrong for novelists in Hollywood? On this episode: Amelia Gray (conversation with Adam Colman). Books: Isadora and Museum of the Weird. Don DeLillo (from the archives). Books: White Noise and Underworld. Russell Banks (from the archives). Books: The Sweet Hereafter and Affliction. William Kennedy (conversation with Adam Colman). So I have spoken countless times about Erika's legal issues, Jen Shah's trash human being crimes, and much more. Do I really have any idea what I'm talking about? No. This week I have @thebravodocket (Angela and Cesie) here to explain to us all the legal mumbo jumbo that's been going on. They help us answer the questions that have been living rent free in our minds since these bad bitches starting breaking the law left and right. Is Erika truly fucked? Is Jen Shah really that dumb to go on a reality show while committing federal crimes? They also break down Maritime Law, and of course...the Free Britney movement. Although Angela and Cesie are two very intelligent lawyers, they're also young women who love to gossip. Angela has a sailing yacht break up story that you would think happened to Gary and Alli, the garbage pile that is RHONY right now, and Rinna being desperado for people to care about Amelia GRAY and Scott. Can't wait for you to listen!

Pulled from the vault for your listening enjoyment, it is the 2017 Emerging Voices Final Reading, live from the Skirball Cultural Center. The 2017 Fellows Soleil Davíd, Peter H.Z. Hsu, Kirin Khan, Chinyere Nwodim, and Jessica Shoemaker read their poetry and fiction, with introductions written by their mentors Jade Chang, Amelia Gray, Ashaki M. Jackson (read by Douglas Kearney), Dana Johnson, and J. Ryan Stradal.
Scott reads an Amelia Gray short story from her story collection Museum Of The Weird.
Mimi Lok's Last of Her Name is an eye-opening story collection about the intimate, interconnected lives of diasporic women and the histories they are born into. Set in a wide range of time periods and locales, including '80s UK suburbia, WWII Hong Kong and contemporary urban California, the book features an eclectic cast of outsiders: among them, an elderly housebreaker, wounded lovers and kung-fu fighting teenage girls. Last of Her Name offers a meditation on female desire and resilience, family and the nature of memory. Lok is in conversation with Amelia Gray, author of five books, most recently Isadora.
Tiny Crimes gathers leading and emerging literary voices to tell tales of villainy and intrigue in only a few hundred words. From the most hard-boiled of noirs to the coziest of mysteries, with diminutive double crosses, miniature murders, and crimes both real and imagined, Tiny Crimes rounds up all the usual suspects, and some unusual suspects, too. With illustrations by Wesley Allsbrook and flash fiction by Carmen Maria Machado, Benjamin Percy, Amelia Gray, Adam Sternbergh, Yuri Herrera, Julia Elliott, Elizabeth Hand, Brian Evenson, Charles Yu, Laura van den Berg, and more, Tiny Crimes scours the underbelly of modern life to expose the criminal, the illegal, and the depraved. Joining us are contributors: Brian Evenson, Adam Hirsch, and Amelia Gray
We discuss Allison Mack's role in Keith Raniere's NXIVM sex cult, how the media ignored a lesbian couple driving six adopted black kids off a cliff, Amy Schumer not being fat enough to be funny, how Shania Twain would have voted in 2016 if she wasn't Canadian, #TimesUp's exclusivity, Charlize Theron's plan to escape American racism by bringing her black babies to South Africa, and Amelia Gray's battle with anorexia and apparent indifference to teen exploitation in celeb culture, all while everyone else at Rocco's Tavern is watching Champions League soccer. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
When Amelia Gray stops by the Damn Library, Christopher turns a drink blue again, and they discuss her new book, Isadora. Particularly: what it was like to write a book about a dancer during a time when she wasn't dancing. A quote about dancing is misattributed. Plus, we get into Nell Zink's fearlessness in her novel, Nicotine, about activists and squat housing. Los Angeles-based writer Amelia Gray has a brand new novel out on FSG, “Isadora.” During a recent trip to New York to visit the set of the new Emma Stone and Jonah Hill Netflix series “Maniac,” for which she was a writer, she dropped by the studio. We talked about writing, making lists of gross stuff, reading Amazon reviews of your own work, her hometown of Tucson, the economy of one-liner comedy, and how writers should choose their studio spaces. This week’s episode is sponsored by Kellogg’s Rice Krispies, Buffalo Wild Wings, and both my and Gray’s alma mater, Arizona State University.
Author Deborah Nelson joins Kate, Medaya, and Eric to discuss her new book Tough Enough about a five iconic 20th century women writers, plus one photographer, and their stylistic affinity - a rejection of sentimentality that challenged gender stereotypes. A fascinating discussion about six fascinating figures in the American pantheon: Susan Sontag, Mary McCarthy, Diane Arbus, Joan Didion, and (the two expats) Hannah Arendt and Simone Weil. Also, Amelia Gray returns to recommend Kristen Iskandrian's novel Motherest.
Los Angeles Author Amelia Gray joins Kate, Medya, and Eric to discuss her new novel Isadora. The book focuses on two years in the life of Isadora Duncan, the legendary American Modern Dance pioneer. It begins when Isadora is the toast of Paris (her adopted hometown) in 1913, the year before the outbreak of World War One. Then, tragedy strikes, her two young children drown in the Seine. Isadora flees Paris, traveling across a Europe that is itself imploding. Author Amelia Gray talks about her approach to historical fiction, what attracted her to Isadora Duncan, and how we try to cope with soul shattering grief. Also, author Jess Arndt returns to recommend a novella, The Last Wolf, by Hungarian author Lazlo Krasznahorkai.
Amelia Gray is the guest. Her new novel Isadora is available now from Farrar, Straus, & Giroux. In today's monologue, I eulogize my dog Walter. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
We pause on a week of WTF political news, seeking refuge in the printed word. We discuss Madame President: The Extraordinary Journey of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf by Helene Cooper; Isadora by Amelia Gray; Grace and the Fever by Zan Romanoff; and Startup: A Novel by Doree Shafrir.
Epigraph The Drunk Booksellers get stoned on this 4/20 themed episode with Paul Constant of the Seattle Review of Books. Listen on iTunes, Stitcher, our website, or subscribe using your podcatcher of choice. This episode is sponsored by Books & Whatnot, the newsletter dedicated to books, bookselling, and bookish folk; check out their newsletter archive here. Follow Books & Whatnot on Twitter at @booksandwhatnot. If you want to get our show notes delivered directly to your inbox—with all the books mentioned on the podcast and links back to the bookstore we’re interviewing PLUS GIFs—sign up for our email newsletter. Introduction In which we make pot jokes and get excited about books We're switching up our intoxicant of choice this episode and getting stoned rather than drunk (mostly). Paul's rocking Mr. Moxey's Mints (of the peppermint/sativa variety). Emma's smoking CBD (not to be confused with William Steig's children's picture book, CDB!). Kim stops talking while stoned—which would make for a really awkward podcast episode—so she's drinking the hoppiest IPA she could find instead. Everyone's a little too high to explain the varieties of weed particularly well, so you should just read David Schmader's Weed: The User's Guide: A 21st Century Handbook for Enjoying Marijuana. Paul's Reading: Up South by Robert Lashley The Nameless City by Faith Erin Hicks A collection of books from Mount Analogue Press Manners by Ted Powers Final Rose by Halie Theoharides (a comic book tone poem about love and loss made up screenshots from The Bachelor) Reading Through It book club pick: What We Do Now: Standing Up for Your Values in Trump's America, edited by Dennis Johnson Emma's Reading: First Position by Melissa Brayden (thanks to a recommendation from our episode with The Ripped Bodice) Giant Days 4 by John Allison, Max Sarin, Lissa Treiman, Liz Fleming, and Whitney Cogar All the Lives I Want: Essays about My Best Friends Who Happen to Be Famous Strangers by Alana Massey (thanks to a recommendation from our episode with Amy Stephenson) Kim's Reading: We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Hope in the Dark by Rebecca Solnit On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder The Aisles Have Eyes: How Retailers Track Your Shopping, Strip Your Privacy, and Define Your Power by Joseph Turow Forthcoming Titles We're Excited For: You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me by Sherman Alexie (out June 13) Love and Trouble: a Midlife Reckoning by Claire Dederer (out May 9) also mentioned Poser: My Life in Twenty-Three Yoga Poses Theft by Finding: Diaries (1977-2002) by David Sedaris (out May 30) Hunger: a Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay (out June 13) Priestdaddy by Patricia Lockwood (out May 2) Borne by Jeff VanderMeer (out April 25) Book of Joan by Lidia Yuknavitch (out April 18) Woman No. 17 by Edan Lepucki (out May 9) Isadora by Amelia Gray (out May 23) Dreaming the Beatles: the Love Story of One Band and the Whole World by Rob Sheffield (out April 25) Witches, Sluts, Feminists: Conjuring the Sex Positive by Kristen J Sollee (out June 13) Modern Tarot: Connecting with Your Higher Self Through the Wisdom of the Cards by Michelle Tea (out June 13) The Perfect Mix: Everything I Know about Leadership I Learned as a Bartender by Helen Rothberg (out June 20) Chapter I [18:50] In which we learn what The Seattle Review of Books is, talk about book reviews as a meta art form, and get advice on promoting diversity and being a safe, welcoming place for people who aren't white bros The Seattle Review of Books is a book news, review, and interviews site. This isn't consumer reports, with a thumbs up or down on each title; each review aims to have a conversation with the book. It's a site that aims to look like your bookshelf, without genre classification. Emma & Kim don't quite understand Paul's assertion that people don't organize their bookshelves, but we roll with it. SRB makes all their money through a single sponsor (which changes each week). If you're interested in their sponsorship program, you can learn more here. Paul wants to promote young, new writers and help them build up their clip file. So you should probably pitch him with your brilliant, bookish ideas. Email submissions@seattlereviewofbooks or fill in the contact form on their about page. Emma particularly loves the Help Desk by Cienna Madrid. Ask Cienna an awkward book-related question at advice@seattlereviewofbooks.com. Being a couple of white guys, Paul and his co-founder Martin McClellan are extremely concerned with diverse representation. You can learn more about how SRB encourages diversity in both the books they review and the reviewers they publish on their about page (or by listening to this episode...). But you should know right off the bat, they are not here to promote the new Franzen novel and they will not pander to bros. Chapter II [33:10] In which we talk about life in the US post-election, say something negative about a book, and discuss Paul's past (and current) life as a bookseller Reading Through It is a post-election book club hosted by Seattle Review of Books, the Seattle Weekly, and Third Place Books Seward Park. They meet the first Wednesday of every month. On our post-election world, Paul Constant says: "This is what books were made for. Books are engines of empathy... the only way to do a deep-dive into an issue. It's our stored knowledge... This is the moment for books." The next Reading Through It book group pick is The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt. They'll be meeting Wednesday May 3rd at Third Place Books Seward Park. Read Paul's article on his time at Borders: Books Without Borders: My Life at the World's Dumbest Bookstore Chain Though he's not technically a bookseller anymore, Paul is still "on team books." Keep an eye out for our "I'm On Team Books" t-shirts, which may or may not be a thing we sell one day. Chapter III [43:20] In which Paul is better at explaining our questions than stoned Emma is at asking them, Emma and Kim give Paul major side-eye due to his bookseller confession, and Emma continues to push Uprooted by Naomi Novik Desert Island Pick (what would you read that you never had the time to read before): The Years of Lyndon Johnson by Robert Caro (beginning with The Path to Power) We couldn't find a video of the following clip of Caro on the Colbert Report, so we'll just leave you this series of gifs to explain why you, too, should consider bringing an epic five-volume biography of Lyndon Johnson as your desert beach read: You're welcome. Now, back to your regularly scheduled show notes. Station Eleven Picks (the books to preserve for society) The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne (everything you need to know about living in a society) Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (everything you need to know about life and how it doesn’t always work out the way you want, but you should live it anyway) Read Paul's essay about The Scarlet Letter, originally written for Scarecrow Video. Wild Pick (traveling is about observing things... soaking everything in) We Tell Ourselves Stories In Order to Live by Joan Didion ("because she is the greatest observer on the planet and I would want to be like her when I was traveling") Bookseller Confession Once again, we have a guest who hasn't read Harry Potter. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? Paul also hasn't read Lord of the Rings and Kim proceeds to side-eye him from across the city. (In case you were wondering, the title of the direct link to this gif is "wtf-i-cant-even-you-are-stupid." Just sayin'.) Emma, naturally, tries to convert Paul to fantasy w/ an Uprooted recommendation because "nobody doesn't like it." Paul commits to reading it in order to prove her wrong. Go-To Handsell Fup by Jim Dodge Paul saved the book from going out of print and—arguably more importantly—he handsold a copy to Allison Hannigan. Impossible Handsell Paradise by AL Kennedy (and everything by AL Kennedy) Book for Booksellers Saving Capitalism by Robert Reich Favorite Bookstores Elliott Bay Ada’s Technical Books Third Place Ravenna Favorite Literary Media Not to brag, but, we’re the only podcast Paul listens to. Sing the Song (Future Tense Books) After steadily garnering attention and gaining fans with her appearances in various magazines and websites, Meredith Alling comes out with her debut collection of stories, Sing the Song. For fans of writers like Diane Williams, Amy Hempel, Lydia Davis, Ben Marcus, and Amelia Gray, Alling’s debut will signal the arrival of a new unique voice in fiction. Featuring 27 stories in 100 pages, Alling’s collection is propulsive, dangerous, often funny, and powered by a language that wrestles with anxiety and the unexpected surrealism of modern life. With an ancient ham crawling out from a sewer to tell fortunes, a lone blonde at a party for redheads, and a mother outsmarting a masked criminal,Sing the Song bleeds and breathes with dreamlike surprise. Meredith Alling lives and works in Los Angeles. Her short fiction has appeared in Tin House, No Tokens, The Fanzine, Spork, The Guardian, and elsewhere. Siel Ju's novel-in-stories, Cake Time, is the winner of the 2015 Red Hen Press Fiction Manuscript Award and will be published in April 2017. Siel is also the author of two poetry chapbooks. Snacky Tunes is back for 2016 as host Greg Bresnitz welcomes Peter Meehan, Editor of Lucky Peach Magazine and musical guest Loose Buttons to the studio. Peter is the editorial director and cofounder of Lucky Peach. A former columnist for the New York Times, he is also the coauthor of numerous cookbooks, including the New York Times bestselling Momofuku, The Frankies Spuntino Kitchen Companion and Cooking Manual. He is also the author of Lucky Peach’s debut cookbook, Lucky Peach Presents: 101 Easy Asian Recipes. He resides in Manhattan with his wife and their two daughters and shares his latest experiences at the quarterly publication and plus details surrounding the EATING OUT LOUD event in Los Angeles. An evening of performances, food, and drinks inspired by the content of Lucky Peach, hosted by Lucky Peach editors Peter Meehan and Chris Ying, the event consists of two parts: a series of readings from Lucky Peach at the Million Dollar Theater by David Chang, Roy Choi, Kim Gordon, Jonathan Gold, Amelia Gray, and Eric Wareheim, followed by a reception at the historic Grand Central Market. Unfortunately the event is sold out, but listen in for details on how to win tickets to the coveted event! A troupe of native New Yorkers (well we actually feel bad lying to you, one of them is from Connecticut), the quartet known as Loose Buttons was struck by the energy buzzing around The Big Apple at some point in their early adolescent years and channeled that inspiration into endless hours practicing in their parent’s garage. Loose Buttons have been together since 2012 and have played around New York City and Miami a heck of a lot. Three of them went to college in Miami to pursue careers as dubstep DJs, but eventually returned to their roots of indie rock and roll. The newest single “Thrill” came out in October and the band is planning to release their next EP in the Spring of 2016.
Scrapper (Soho Press)In Scrapper, Kelly scavenges for scrap metal from the hundred thousand abandoned buildings in a part of Detroit known as “the zone,” an increasingly wild landscape where one day he finds something far more valuable than the copper he’s come to steal: a kidnapped boy, crying out for rescue. Briefly celebrated as a hero, Kelly secretly takes on the responsibility of avenging the boy’s unsolved kidnapping, a task that will take him deeper into the zone and into a confrontation with his own past, his long-buried trauma, memories made dangerous again. Praise for Scrapper:"Scrapper is an offering to the grim phoenix rising out of the ashes of Industrial America—elegy, eulogy, and prophesy. Readers: listen and attend!"—Aaron Gwyn, author of Wynne's War and Dog on the Cross"Scrapper is a meditative, moody work of art. It's about love and violence, hope and ruin, a kind of superhero story for adults. Matt Bell is truly gifted and his latest offers more proof that he's a writer we should all be reading."—Victor LaValle, author of The Devil in Silver"Matt Bell adds his song to the poetry inherent in the image of the abandoned city. Here, in his fierce second novel,Scrapper, Bell mines Detroit, the zone, with Kelly, an unforgettably rendered ruin, an 'unaccomodated man . . . a poor, bare, forked animal,' who yet amazes with his capacity to love." —Christine Schutt, author of Prosperous Friends"In the imaginative, mysterious, and beautiful Scrapper, Matt Bell delves into the complexity of ruins: the wider American ruins and the local personal ruins. This is an evocative novel that lingers over what has been abandoned and shows us how the places we inhabit shape who we are and how we are."—Dana Spiotta, author of Stone Arabia"A fearless and harrowing meditation on the ruination and transformation of cities and of people; but amid loss and destruction, Bell finds a strain of piercing hope. This is an extraordinary book."—Emily St. John Mandel, New York Times bestselling author of Station Eleven"Like the very best novels, Matt Bell's dark and suspenseful Scrapper works on so many levels that it's difficult to describe in just a few words, but what I can tell you is that it's ultimately about love and death, and that people will still be reading it when all of America, not just Detroit, is crumbling under the weight of its mistakes." —Donald Ray Pollock, author of The Devil All the TimeMatt Bell is the author of the novel In the House upon the Dirt between the Lake and the Woods, a finalist for the Young Lions Fiction Award, a Michigan Notable Book, and an Indies Choice Adult Debut Book of the Year Honor Recipient, as well as the winner of the Paula Anderson Book Award. His stories have appeared in Best American Mystery Stories, Conjunctions, Gulf Coast, The American Reader, and many other publications. Born in Michigan, he now teaches creative writing at Arizona State University.Amelia Gray is the author of four books: AM/PM, Museum of the Weird, THREATS, and Gutshot. Her fiction and essays have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Tin House, and VICE. She lives in Los Angeles.
Between The Covers : Conversations with Writers in Fiction, Nonfiction & Poetry
NPR calls Gutshot “a book brimming with blood, sexual deviance, mucus and madness.” The New York Times says “reading Gutshot is a little like being blindfolded and pelted from all sides with fire, Jell-O and the occasional live animal.” And Vice Magazine calls it a book full of bodily fluids and strange sights and smells. […] The post Amelia Gray : Gutshot appeared first on Tin House.
Colin Marshall talks with Amelia Gray, author of AM/PM, Museum of the Weird, Threats, and the new short story collection Gutshot, which showcases her writing at its most grotesque, its most hypernormal, its most speculative, and its most darkly funny. The book offers a portrait of her very own America, a country populated by Greyhound bus riders, compulsive vomiters, Camaro IROC-Z drivers, cruelly fetishistic conscious-consuming vegans, and victims of every sort of personality disorder.
Kitchens of the Great Midwest (Pamela Dorman Books) From one of our favorite local authors comes a hotly anticipated debut--about a young woman with a once-in-a-generation palate who becomes the iconic chef behind the country's most coveted dinner reservation. When Lars Thorvald's wife, Cynthia, falls in love with wine--and a dashing sommelier--he's left to raise their baby, Eva, on his own. He's determined to pass on his love of food to his daughter--starting with pureed pork shoulder. As Eva grows, she finds her solace and salvation in the flavors of her native Minnesota. From Scandinavian lutefisk to hydroponic chocolate habaneros, each ingredient represents one part of Eva's journey as she becomes the star chef behind a legendary and secretive pop-up supper club, culminating in an opulent and emotional feast that's a testament to her spirit and resilience. Each chapter in J. Ryan Stradal's startlingly original debut tells the story of a single dish and character, at once capturing the zeitgeist of the Midwest, the rise of foodie culture, and delving into the ways food creates community and a sense of identity. By turns quirky, hilarious, and vividly sensory, Kitchens of the Great Midwest is an unexpected mother-daughter story about the bittersweet nature of life--its missed opportunities and its joyful surprises. It marks the entry of a brilliant new talent. Praise for Kitchens of the Great Midwest: "Kitchens of the Great Midwest is a big-hearted, funny, and class-transcending pleasure. It's also both a structural and empathetic tour de force, stepping across worlds in the American midwest, and demonstrating with an enviable tenderness and ingenuity the tug of war between our freedom to pursue our passions and our obligations to those we love." --Jim Shepard, author of Project X and National Book Award finalist for Like You'd Understand, Anyway "Tender, funny, and moving, J. Ryan Stradal's debut novel made me crave my mother's magic cookie bars...and every good tomato I've ever had the privilege of eating. Kitchens of the Great Midwest manages to be at once sincere yet sharply observed, thoughtful yet swiftly paced, and the lives of its fallible, realistic, and complicated characters mattered to me deeply. It's a fantastic book."-- Edan Lepucki, bestselling author of California "In Kitchens of the Great Midwest, a charming, fast-moving round robin tale of food, sensuality and Midwestern culture, Mr. Stradal has delivered one extremely tasty, well-seasoned debut in what is sure to be a long and savory career."--Janet Fitch, author White Oleander "From the quite literally burning passions of a lonely eleven-year-old girl with an exceptional palate, to the ethical dilemmas behind a batch of Blue Ribbon Peanut Butter Bars, J. Ryan Stradal writes with a special kind of meticulous tenderness--missing nothing and accepting everything. A superbly gratifying debut."--Meg Howrey, author of The Crane's Dance "An impossible-to-put-down, one-of-a-kind novel. The prose is beautiful, the characters memorable, and the plot is surprising at every turn. I have never read a book quite like this--and neither, I'll bet, have you. This stunning debut announces J. Ryan Stradal as a first-rate voice in American fiction. This is a wildly creative, stunningly original, and very moving novel. I can't wait to see what Stradal does next."-- Rob Roberge, author of The Cost of Living "A Great American Novel in the fullest sense of the term. Praying Drunk (Sarabande Books) Skylight Books is thrilled to welcome back Kyle Minor. For today's reading he'll be joined by another Skylight favorite,Amelia Gray. The characters in Praying Drunk speak in tongues, torture their classmates, fall in love, hunt for immortality, abandon their children, keep machetes beneath passenger seats, and collect porcelain figurines. A man crushes pills on the bathroom counter while his son watches from the hallway; missionaries clumsily navigate an uprising with barbed wire and broken glass; a boy disparages memorized scripture, facedown on the asphalt, as he fails to fend off his bully. From Kentucky to Florida to Haiti, these seemingly disparate lives are woven together within a series of nested repetitions, enacting the struggle to remain physically and spiritually alive throughout the untamable turbulence of their worlds. In a masterful blend of fiction, autobiography, and surrealism, Kyle Minor shows us that the space between fearlessness and terror is often very small. Long before Praying Drunk reaches its plaintive, pitch-perfect end. Kyle Minor is a columnist at Salon and The Nation. The theme for the Happy Ending Music and Reading Series at Joe's Pub in March was Strange Places. Listen to the extraordinary — and absurd — environments that authors Jessica Anthony, Amelia Gray and Heidi Julavitz conjured up their readings. Host and curator Amanda Stern was fighting through a migraine. Author Jessica Anthony had a chest cold. And half of the musical duo Kaiser Cartel, Courtney Kaiser, went into labor the day of the show, leaving Benjamin Cartel to perform on his own. Regardless of these challenges, Anthony, along with the two authors Amelia Gray and Heidi Julavits, were in the house, reading from their work as well as performing their one-thing-they'd-never-performed-on-stage-before for the audience, which is one of Stern's requirements for participating in the series. Gray, an author who funded her current book tour via the popular web site Kickstarter, read a story about a date gone horribly, viscerally, wrong: larynxes fall out of the daters' throats, arms land on the floor and "flesh is siphoned into a free standing grandfather clock" that's set on fire and rolled into the street. After her reading, Gray arm-wrestled her editor on stage. Anthony read from her first novel, "The Convalescent," about "a short, sickly Hungarian near-midget who sells meat out of a bus in Northern Virginia." Afterwards, she taught the crowd how to use sign language to perform a popular pop tune. Julavits, author and the co-editor of The Believer magazine, read what she calls "The Bachelor fan-fiction" — an imagined life of one of the bachelors who was kicked off of the show. She then performed rowdy rugby fight songs. Bon Mots: Happy Ending Music and Reading series host and curator Amanda Stern on headaches and humanity: "We are human beings. We grow people in our bodies. That's so weird. That's bizarre. So I think we actually live in the strangest place of all — where your head actually hurts. And you can't see what's causing it to hurt!" Amelia Gray reads the inconspicuous opening of a very conspicuous story: "The woman and man are on a date! It is a date! The woman rubs a lipstick print off her water glass. The man turns his butter knife over and over and over and over. Everyone has to pee. What's the deal with dates?!" Heidi Julavitz's Bachelor on how "so real" his connection to the bachelorette was: "When we were on our date on a half-finished skyscraper, which we summited with the help of a team of urban mountaineers, I said, 'This feels so real.' And Ashley had totally agreed."
This week: Actor Jon Hamm takes us way beyond the Mad Men universe… Comic Michael Ian Black says you’re not doing it right… atheist author Alain de Botton teaches religion… writer Amelia Gray sees ghosts… Jon Glaser’s high concepts… the sobering history of “Axis Sally”… and Rico tastes a bit o’ the boxty. Plus, a new tune from Beach House, and a joke in the key of “corny.”
