When it comes to producing a comedy show, it's ideal that you have someone who loves comedy just as much as the performers do, but, for their own reasons, would rather not take the stage and just work behind the scenes. Olivia Amerling has emerged as a go-to NYC comedy producer with three weekly shows on her plate, Seance Comedy at Easy Lover, I Made You a Playlist at Three Diamond Door and Drule at Fette Sau, after just being a hardcore comedy fan that would show up at as many shows as she possibly could. We go through NYC comedy, especially neighborhood specific NYC comedy, and break down what she does to make her shows staples in New York Also, "hot" takes on Mo'Nique getting a hour Netflix special, the passing of Jak Knight, and more. Jak Knight was an incredible comedian, and even kinder human being. He passed away July 15th, 2022, and the comedy community is feeling it. I met Jak in Seattle, and when he got to LA, he hit the ground running, getting gigs with Netflix, Comedy Central, writing and voicing characters for BIG MOUTH, opening for people like Dave Chappelle, and just being a constant source of enthusiasm and joy around the comedy scene. This hurts. I can't imagine what his family is feeling. I hope you're resting easy bud. Thanks for making our lives better. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome back and welcome all the new DOPEsters to the podcast!!! In our house the belly's getting bigger, energy is getting lower, and the conversations are getting weirder lolz. Smokie's done a tremendous job putting up with Puffie's high rants, but this weeks was beyond chaotic: we got into a heated discussion on the idea that came from a random conversation on the show "Bust Down"- staring Jak Knight, Chris Redd, Langston Kerman and our main bitch Sam Jay (streaming on PeacockTV now). After going into a spiral over this "new slave" idea, we touched upon the thought of adults continuing to date their friends as they get older: just how our tastes buds change for certain foods, of course our connections and relationships with the people around us will ultimately change as we mature- but not everyone is wise enough to see this. We also discuss the importance of reevaluating ongoing relationships throughout life and maybe not everyone in your life is meant to be there. “I met with a guy and he gave me a show that was terrible,” began Chris Redd. “I went back to my talented friends who don't do terrible comedy and said, ‘We should make a version of this.' We kept jamming on that shit and there were four different versions, but it eventually became Bust Down.” Redd is known for his work on Saturday Night Live, Popstar, and Joker. His talented friends include Sam Jay (SNL, That Damn Michael Che), Langston Kerman (South Side, Insecure), and Jak Knight (Big Mouth, Black-ish). The show they created is called Bust Down, a Peacock original that follows four casino employees in a dead-end job in middle America who want to find self-worth within their bad ideas. “This show, in a beautiful way, has also tracked our evolution as artists,” said Langston. “What would have been the show, years ago, would have been real bad. And now it's pretty good.” Combining comedy styles from shows like South Side, SNL, Big Mouth, and everything in between the writers found their own unique tone with Bust Down. In this interview, the writer-performers talk about finding voice, misconceptions of comedy, the importance of story, their initial pitch for the show, and advice for writers trying to break in today. On Today's Episode, we're looking at the pilot to a TV series that just came out on Peacock that you may never have heard of because it's not getting the same coverage as Bel-Air or Joe vs. Carole. Chris Redd, Jak Knight, Sam Jay, and Langston Kerman star as four friends/work colleagues at a casino in Gary, Indiana. Their personalities draw comparisons to the characters from It's Always Sunny orParty Down. The show tackles big issues without much of a moral compass, but that's sort of the point. Tune in to hear what we thought!
