#124: Leaning on Jesus with Wendy Pope

Real Talk with Rachael Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 8, 2021 41:57

This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm talking with author Wendy Pope about her new book Jesus Everlasting: Leaning on Our Counselor, Defender, Father, and Friend. Wendy is the wife of Scott, mother of Blaire and Griffin, author, speaker, and Bible study teacher. She loves lazy Sundays watching golf with her husband, thrift-store shopping with her daughter, and watching building shows with her son. She is the author of several books - Jesus Everlasting, Hidden Potential, Yes, No, and Maybe and Wait and See. Wendy is the Founder and Executive Director of Word Up Ministries. She leads women all over the world to life change through her in-depth online Bible studies. She has led thousands of women through her Read Through the Word daily video study of the One Year Chronological Bible. Down-to-earth and transparent, Wendy teaches in a way that women feel she is speaking directly to their hearts. Key Points from Our Conversation: Wendy's book Jesus Everlasting: Leaning on Our Counselor, Defender, Father, and Friend tells the stories of the everyday women in the Bible who had encounters with Jesus as the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. Jesus is a defender who protects. The truth of His Word is our defense. We can stand on it when we have disagreements and be secure enough to walk away from things that aren't healthy for us. It's hard to lean into a Heavenly Father you can't see when an earthly father that you can has disappointed you. It's a trust relationship that develops over time, but He will never let you down. Invest time getting to know God's heart; read his word. Start in the Psalms. If you don't understand, get a children's Bible or the Living Bible. When you're searching for peace in the midst of the storm, fake it until you feel it. Keep digging into God and His Word and the fruits of the spirit will take root. “God is not instant because He wants to build a relationship with us and it takes time to do that.” When we reflect on God's faithfulness, we're building a "faith bank." We make deposits when things are good and we can make withdrawals when you can't feel it and know He'll be faithful again. If you want to recognize God in everyday life, you have to spend time with Him. Do everything to build your faith. "We have to invest in the 411 (information) about God before we can feel Him in the 911 (emergencies).” Let's Get Real Practical: I have two questions to help you lean into Jesus: Where in your life do you need to pull up a seat for Jesus? What questions do you need to ask Him today? Be sure to take time to listen for His response. She's trapped in a fat black trash can She makes friends at wasteland She takes tabs that taste bad DAMN. Half an acid after ASAP crapped on the map, Back to the BASSPOD for some awful crap She tried to dance to, She's trying—she's trying, but can't Thinks about camp, and the wristband she grabbed as a sample But the black man, her first fan, is holding her hand His first rave ever was at the promised land She left with a plan, panicked in Alaska, then ran Went manic with Uncle Sam, damaged; A sacrifice, like a lamb They call for Christ, and she wants to answer but hasn't; Advice from dad— “Humankind has gone mad.” The Day Met The Night She had to miss the man in the hat; but was glad The act she caught was by an artist that's also black Bass music lacks much, in fact; Every since Skrillex did it, Everyone else just does that Now they're programmed and mathematical, Dubstep is had, Everybody loves Excision and forgot how to dance; No offense to Jeff, It's just his fans are the worst— She was still in the hearse, but witness to the dress rehearsal. Till Death Do Us Part, So she did; but Rest In Peace, she didn't— She was almost asleep, then here comes The Nigga, Skrillex. The Aliens Did it. NO WE DIDNT. THE GODS DID. Call it Divine Intervention Right on Time for Dentention He wreaked of all the sadness and Liquor The Poor Thing, he needed attention she couldn't give it, just wished she didn't exist She was shook, and just booked it out of the Soul Kitchen The whole mission was meant to be a means of prevention; A rockstar musician and a mystic's intuition At Intermission, she interviews with Inside Edition— When he makes his entrance, She breaks away just to kiss him But Listen: In this dimension, the Media Captures the passion She had for the man on camera, a scandal happens! His girlfriend's mad, his fans all hate this random fat black actress, or rapper— whatever she is, she woke up famous, and the FanGirls attack They all love Sonny; Fight over him in forums like vultures; It's part of the culture, she knows because she studies producers— But this one is different, there's only one Skrillex— A loser; Money talks and bullshit walks, and that's an evil doer; She just calmly walked away, she couldn't do him the favor He just came into her life, and then he came back never; Now she just wonders what would have happened, had she acted on impulse; His hands were right between her thighs, but then he acted repulsed, as his fingertips brushed the skin of her belly— The Curse of her body: reality's depiction of gluttony; We all need love. Perhaps what Sonny needed was hugs, But Ugly she was, and had been cracked like a nut; A scar on her lip, A scar on her eye, The Sun God marked “Mine” Blinded by the light, polite tidings, moonlit nights fighting the right side— look at the bright side; We are alike, right? We like white. Fine. What is a pawn to a Knight? What's a King to a Queen? A Lion to a Lioness might seem to be priority; In reality it's just another misogyny She knows she needs; He needs nothing. Rafiki, believe me— I did see Simba under a Tree, With a Hog and a Meerkat, I think Take it easy on the DMT, Before Disney reads this catastrophe. Well, that's random. Well, so is Skrillex in your tent. Is he for sale, or for rent? Is she no more than a friend? I'm offended, but get it— That's just how it is, with a rich kid; I lost 200 pounds, but she's posing for “fitness”, Basic. Forget this shit. At the core, I resent it; I fell in a horrible instant Aplorable, isn't it? Now I just want to prevent; I saw through dimensions, Prayed for him, I went and I fasted Attracted spirits out of crypts with magic I flew the black flag, ship wrecked on an island and died again, All my friends and Family in heaven keep mentioning him I don't know what he did, But I'm just trying to save— Shh. What did Tim say? He tried to warn me about Garrett before I even knew his name; It's fucking crazy, But I lost it when he passed away— I remembered the day I called “A Long Drive, With You, Friends” Cause I was stuck in the Skrillex attemtpting to decipher the message; Ran down the mountain pouting about Dillon Francis, But when I got back to town, I found out what the past is; Los Angeles was smaller, but still back to back traffic— I looked down from Elysian Park at all of the Classics; It had to be about the 60's, it was a nightmare— Time Travel would be fun, if I had chosen to go there, But no! A flash went off as I was leaving the mountain, I didn't even feel the phototelepoertation, It was instant. I'm a crackhead, I'm a mental health case— Five years ago, I said I'd run for President someday I knew as the words came out; it was a fatal mistake I became #1 Enemy of the State The USA was under a brand new administration, We went Global, White Supremacy Funds Corporations Now it doesn't matter what I say or do; On paper, I've been documented as… Doesn't matter. The worst of it was, They gave me Sonny's head on a platter “Invest In Water” Telepathy is easy for me; But gnashing of teeth? I listen to Skrillex, the secrets I keep Now I'm starting to weep, Take it easy— He's probably busy. I'm standing in line at the showers, he's disappearing I can't believe it; His name wasn't on the roster An imposter, impossible; I already saw him His mom worries, a lot— But I don't know which one, She begged and pleaded for me to save her son And the West was won, Annie went and got her gun She's ugly, but she's skinny and she's also a slut; A DJs just a squirrel with a nut— Always looking for another with some tits and a butt Looks young? So what? ID says Connecticut, just turned 21 But she's sucking her thumb Dumb DJ wants to have fun Now thunder has struck; At least this time I'm in luck— I don't know what he's done, But Space Jesus is giving everyone a good in for their money, Here bassnectar comes; My assumption was—you've seen one, it applies to all of them. Apparently not, my previous favorite Previous, I say, because I think someone paid him As years pass by, I see what I've written—it's clearly a given, perhaps this is the reason I've risen; This is a prison. I don't want to listen to Skrillex. I'm so sick of Dillon Francis, And being a black chick I'm so sick of fitness models And Instagram fitness I'm so sick of Sonny Moore and this aryan woman. According to the Book or Mormon, I'm rather important, But neither myself or they would admit it— Untraceably ancient, they have questions of our Family's origins I'm like, Just ask Skrillex. That dudes way more a force than I—not adopted, but unwanted, and unaborted. Now I'm imported, an immortal now with African heritage— Not African, but they have to call me African American or black like, statistically— Thats seeming racist again, I think., I'm also indigenous—but white people see me as black; Blacks know that I'm half, they laugh and turn their back, As if. The Black Cat in the hat sat and splashed blood on his mask; he had to attack the bampheramph master, acting as captain He can't stand him, now he's trapped in a mansion with Dillon Francis and a Masked Banana, Happy with Hammocks for batting practice. [Skrillex is resting in a hammock. The masked banana Approaches.] WHAT THE FUCK. CUT TO: Here he is. is he dead? No, he's Skrillex. Don't be stupid. That's a shiner. It's a doozy… ...This Nigga. This Nigga. This NIGGA. Uh oh. Where is Skrillex? I found him. He's over there. He's over WHERE? You should go. [shrugs] I should stay. Now you're playing. It's your game. I'll kill you. I doubt that. Don't tempt me. Or you'll what? No, no, no! Dillon Francis?!! GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE. < GO AWAY DUDE, I GOT THIS. NO, OKAY?! NO. Ay, no! Vamos! JUST STOP IT. What is he doing here? What are you doing here? I'm on the lineup. (Like, 6 people) HOW? Ask My Management. >< Man, fuck your management. GERALD: Hey, fuck you! Gerald?! S'that you? GERALD: Yes, ‘tis I! You look good! Back at cha! ...is that your piñata? Previously, kind of. What the fuck. Dillon. Heh. Oh, what—he's “Dillon” now? I've always been “Dillon” that's my name You're “Dillon Francis” DJ Dillon Francis. You wish you were a DJ. Why would I waste a wish—? [they bicker, as S Ū P A C R E E silently prepares for battle. As she sharpens The Battle Axe, Skrillex takes notice and moves quickly towards her.] Hey—where'd you get that?! Oh, what, this? The Battle Axe? Yeah, it is! What the fuck! I thought you had that. [Skrillex, startled, checks his pockets; which is ridiculous, because he's wearing Skinny jeans.] I thought he was wearing shorts. We like shorts. The Skrillex Shorts (Angrily) What did you DO? What did YOU do? Satan won't tell me unless I give him my sOuL Oh, goodness… Jesus Christ! What? Don't. ((Jesus: GODDAMMIT I TOLD YOU, I'M ON VACATION.)) Why with Satan? I am Satan. What the fuck! He's just kidding. Oh, Jesus Christ. Stop calling on Jesus, he's not coming. ((I ALREADY TOLD YOU, CALL CREE)) [Up, at Jesus] DONT CALL ME BY MY SLAVE NAME, JESUS—I FUCKING TOLD YOU. You know what—? [Jesus Appears.] Dillon Francis: *gasps* JESUS. What, Dillon Francis? What? Do we not spend enough time talking? What? Dillon Francis: Jesus: Just—practice patience, you'll get your fuckin shit—just. Ugh. And, YOU! Skrillex: Me? Jesus: Nah, dog. You're straight. Skrillex: Nice. Dillon Francis: WHAT? The FUCK. Jesus: hey—out of sight, out of mind; unlike your dumb ass—am I right? Dillon Francis: You know him? Jesus: We're booed up. Wait, you're fuckin' Jesus? Not with that inflection. Jesus: Oh what, jealous? Dillon Francis: This is awful. Jesus: It's God Awful. Dillon Francis: That's not punny. Jesus, Skrillex, and SupaCree: YES IT IS. Dillon Francis: Oh, My God. Jesus: Dont call God— SupaCree: No, she is not— —she's probably busy— —she's not available— Dillon Francis: What is happening. Gerald: How do you know Jesus? He's a Distant relative—Look. I don't have time for this; I'm on vacation. You've been on vacation since The Bush Administration! Wait, Which One? Dude, why bother? It's current events! This entire existence is a current event! Would you just forget about Heaven? Look, you're not getting back in again until you finish this—not without your little friends. Skrillex: I'm not her friend. Supacree: Skrillex isn't my friend. Dillon Francis: She's not my friend. GERALD: I'm your friend. Yeah you are! Yeah I am! Love You Gerald! ...Did you fuck? What's with you!? Jesus: She's not your friend. Skrillex: Hell nah! Dillon Francis: [makes a face] ...that was the friend you sent? Jesus: YES. Dillon Francis: ...that I asked for? Jesus: YES. What's wrong? Dillon Francis : I just… Adjust. [Jesus receives the Alien communication signal telepathically.] Jesus: Adjust? Fuck me. Supacree: Is that them? Skrillex: Mmmmm…. Dillon Francis: Oh, my God! Jesus: Oh, guess what? Now she's coming. Are they close? Seems like it. Dillon Francis: What the fuck! Fuck, alright then. “Fuck, alright then.” Shutthefuckup— Why don't you shutthefuckup— Jesus: Both of you shutthefuckup. Shut The Fuck Up, And Listen Oh, shit—fuck—there's still a battle? Uh, yeah, there's still a battle; God loves these things. Dillon Francis: Wait, wait, wait— Jesus: wait, wait what? Dude, just shut up go get your...what's your rave weapon again? Supacree: white privilege? Dillon: (at Skrillex) no, that's his. Jesus: oh please, it's basically everyone's—except hers. Yikes. Skrillex: [squints] Jesus: yeah, yikes. Now take a hike so I can talk with these two immortal morons without your face in my face. My face isn't in your face… Your face is in my face! Now get lost! Prepare to Save The Rave! ...this is strange. [to side, cut scene Gerald: what is your rave weapon, anyway? Dillon Francis: it's a secret. Jesus: Alright— [as they prepare, she each scan the skyline for a sign of advanced life.] Skrillex: not another flyby. Supacree: Jesus fucking Christ. Jesus: Where is it? Supacree: He has it. Skrillex: She has it. Both: no, I don't. Both: yes, you do! Jesus: Are you serious? Skrillex: What is your life? Supacree: I'm not alive, I just died! Skrillex: Oh yeah, right? Jesus: oh yeah, right. Today on Karl and Crew Mornings, we concluded our weekly theme, "5 Decisions That Change Everything".  The topic was Freedom Friday, so we asked,"Who do you choose to serve?".  Our scripture reference was Joshua 24:15.  Have you decided to follow Jesus? Where were you when you did decide to follow Him?  We also had some fun with a few "dadisms" such as "I'm not heating the outside." or "Money doesn't grow on trees.".  Finally, take a listen to the Karl and Crew Showcast to hear the highlights from today.

And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” 50 And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.Sermon Outline1. God’s Redemptive Storyv47 “Jesus, son of David”2. Bartimaeus’s Redemptive Storyv51 “what do you want me to do for you?”v52 “he recovered his sight and followed him on the way”3. Our Redemptive Storyv48 “have mercy on me”v49 “take heart. Get up; he is calling you”v52 “your faith has made you well”Prayer of ConfessionMerciful and gracious God, you have shown grace and favor by sending Jesus as you promised, to open blind eyes, soften hard hearts, and raise spiritually dead people. We confess our weak faith. We know corruption has been at work in us. We see it in how we misunderstand you, and how we judge and mistreat others. We have not lived within your redemptive story, but having sought our own ways, we have brought confusion and difficulty to ourselves. Forgive us. Jesus, son of David, have mercy on us. Open our eyes that we would see you as our healer and redeemer. Give us ears to hear your call that we may follow your way. Amen.Questions for ReflectionIn what ways do you experience spiritual blindness? How are God and His ways hard to see and discern? If Jesus asked you “what do you want me to do for you?” what would you answer? What do you think you should answer? What would you want to answer?Where does the story of your life connect with the story of the Bible, a story that culminates in the ministry of Jesus? Where are you disconnected? Is your future hopeful? Why or why not? As you reflect on the story of your life, what gives any sense of whether or not your future is good? What can you do when you can’t make sense of your current situation? What does it look like (practically) to have faith? How is faith a way of seeing and understanding? Why is prayer for mercy an ordinary part of the Christian life? Do you truly believe God is merciful?

Main Text: Philippians 2:19-24 Main Idea: Timothy is an encouraging example of what it means to be like Jesus. 1. We all _________________ encouragement! (vs. 19 & 23-24) [19] I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I too may be cheered by news of you. [23] I hope therefore to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me, [24] and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself will come also. 3 John 2–4: [2] Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. [3] For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth. [4] I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. 2. A personal _______________________ of Christlikeness is a powerful encouragement. (vs. 20-22) [20] For I have no one like him, who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare. [21] For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. [22] But you know Timothy's proven worth, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. Today’s Discussion Questions: If you were to share a key insight from today’s sermon with a friend, what would you say? Today’s Lunch Discussion: In what area of your life do you need encouragement today? Are you caring well for your own soul? Who do you have in your life that looks like Jesus? Where do you see the grace of God in those closest to you? How are you genuinely caring for the welfare of others? How are you focused on the mission of Jesus? Are you a powerful example of what it means to look like Jesus? If not, what do you need to repent of?

Introduction to Meeting With Jesus

Living the Bible

How many people have you met in your life? Try to count them. Start with your parents, then your brothers and sisters, your neighbors, your friends. Add up those you know from school, church, vacations, and so on. What number are you up to? Are you over a hundred yet?You will meet even more people as you get older, go to different schools, play different sports, move to different houses, and do different jobs. You are going to meet so many people that eventually you will not be able to count them all or remember them all! There are probably other people you would love to meet but they probably don’t want to meet you. Maybe it’s an athlete you admire, or a singer, or a politician. You think about them and hope one day to meet them, but they don’t know you and therefore don’t want to meet you.But there is one person you must meet more than anyone else. And this person wants to meet with you too. And if you meet him, you will never forget him. His name is Jesus, and I want you to meet him because he is the most awesome person you can ever meet.I really, really want you to meet with Jesus. That’s why I wrote a book for kids called Meeting with Jesus. It’s going to be published at the end of April 2020, but I thought I’d tell you a bit about it first and hopefully you’ll join me in meeting with Jesus. But how do we meet with Jesus? Where do we meet with Jesus? We meet with Jesus by reading the Bible.“But the Bible’s a tough book,” you might say, “It’s hard to read and understand.”That’s why I wrote this book, called Meeting with Jesus, to help you read the Bible, understand it, and so meet with Jesus. Wouldn’t that be a great way to use the lockdown we’re all living through? We may not be able to meet with our friends, but quarantine can’t stop us meeting with Jesus. So, here’s what I’m suggesting. Ask your Mom or Dad to get you the book, Meeting with Jesus. Over a number of weeks, it will take you through the whole life of Jesus – his birth, teaching, miracles, death, and resurrection – with short daily readings of just a few verses of the Bible a day. There’s also a brief question to answer each day. And maybe each day after breakfast, lunch, or supper, you can play the podcast together and hopefully not just you but the whole family can meet with Jesus. So, what will we do until the book comes out at the end of April? Well, over the next couple of weeks on the Living the Bible podcast, I’ll be introducing you to Jesus and how to meet with him. I’ll answer questions such as “Who is Jesus?” “Why do we need to meet with Jesus?” “How do I know if I met with Jesus?” and so on. Then we’ll be ready to start the book at the end of April/beginning of May. Sound good? One other thing, what age do you have to be? Well, you need to be able to write a little each day, so probably six or seven is a good starting age. But it’s good for kids up to, say, age twelve as well. If you’re younger than that, you probably can’t use the book, but you can still meet with Jesus through listening to this podcast. And if you’re much older than 12, maybe in your twenties or thirties, or even sixties or seventies, remember you’re never too old to meet with Jesus and I hope this daily podcast will help you to do just that.I look forward to meeting Jesus with you in Meeting with Jesus.

Since “Atonement” is one of those words which may strike us as too theological to comprehend, the Bible gives us several “languages” which communicate what atonement means using scenarios we can relate to. We explore 5 of these languages: The Battlefield, The Marketplace, The Temple, The Law Courts, and Exile. And we ask 3 questions of each: Where does this language place me w/out Jesus? Where does this language place Jesus? And where does this language place me once I am in Jesus?

As we get ready for the Christmas experience, I’ve been reading the beginning of Luke… The birth of John the Baptist foretold, Jesus’ birth foretold, Mary pregnant with Jesus visiting Elizabeth pregnant with John…    And I’m struck by how these people, who—over the last 2000 years—have been mythologized, responded to these magnificent spiritual moments and the great responsibilities that followed.    I want to highlight a few phrases for us today…    When Zacharias is told that his wife will become pregnant with a prophet named John… the angel says, “Listen carefully…”    Luke 1:22 “When Zacharias came out from the Temple, he was unable to speak to them. They realized that he had seen a vision… and remained mute.”    Verse 24: “After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant, and for five months she secluded herself completely…”    Verse 28, now with Mary, “The angel said, “Greetings favored one! The lord is with you.” But she was greatly perplexed at what he said, and kept carefully considering what kind of greeting this way…”    Do you notice any theme in these moments? These grandiose spiritual encounters… Moments that would change these people’s lives, and ultimately change the course of history…    Words like: Listen carefully… he remained mute… she secluded herself… she carefully considered…    When was the last time you listened carefully? Remained mute? Secluded yourself? Carefully considered?    For most of us, there’s not room to be patient, quiet, contemplative, being careful… Moving slowly… Deciding slowly… Having space to breathe and reflect and consider what’s in front of us.    Zacharias was so impacted that he knew words would minimize the magnitude of it all… Elizabeth needed solitude to receive the fullness of what was happening this late in life… Mary chose to listen, intently…    This all culminates in the actual birth of Jesus… Where the busyness of a small town and the pace of everyone running around forces a young woman to give birth in a stable surrounded by farm animals…    The Inn, too full for Mary and Joseph, over-capacity, too busy to consider making room, is a perfect metaphor for our lives.    Inundated by notifications, dings and buzzes, emails and likes and comments and news alerts… Every waking minute accounted for. One thing leading to the next… A subconscious fear of open time causing us to fill it all…    In pursuit of productivity, we’ve secretly convinced ourselves to fill every minute with something productive… something that ACHIEVES or makes us smarter or more informed or more prepared for that meeting…    The Inn is too full.    But guess what? Jesus came anyways.    It didn’t deter him… He took whatever space was available. In humility, became the most vulnerable thing on earth, in one of the most unsanitary places, at one of the most inopportune times…    And He continues to do that, doesn’t He?    If our lives don’t have space for Him, He comes anyway.    Those that have the wisdom and discipline to slow down might actually see Him coming… They might actually be ready… Their hearts prepared… The pace and breathing and heart-rate slowed enough to encounter Him…    Zacharias listened carefully… he remained mute… Elizabeth secluded herself… Mary carefully considered…    Each and every day invites us to either add to the noise or to absorb some of it—for ourselves and for others.    We can either heighten the level of activity and chaos and frantic living… Or we can de-escalate. We can pause. We can breathe. We can create space. And we can be prepared for whatever Jesus wants to do in our lives.    I truly believe that Jesus will interrupt our lives whether we’re paying attention or not… but how much better is it to wait and watch, than just fill our minds and hearts and thoughts and emotions with MORE, MORE, MORE…    So… in these last few days leading up to Christmas, I invite you to breathe… to listen carefully… to be silent for a few moments… To seclude yourself, whether its in your car or your basement or a quiet office… and carefully consider what this season means… What it represents… What Jesus might be up to in your life. And how the year ahead can be marked by Immanuel… God with us, in each and every moment of each and every day.    I love you guys, make it a good day.

No Perfect People Allowed {3} Speaker: Rev. Patrick Kelley Originally Recorded: Jul 8, 2018 Imagine that you were exploring a foreign religion, what fears, concerns or questions would you have? What environment would you want to do this in? Mark 2:15-17 And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?" And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners." Creating a culture of dialogue means becoming people who truly respect and value all people as worthy of the love and sacrifice Christ demonstrated. Seeking to understand as much as we want to be understood is other centered communication. Are you ok with trusting the Holy Spirit with the process and with people? 1 Corinthians 3:6-7 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. There is a process of growth When we rush the process we don’t allow the Holy Spirit to work. Our role is to be authentic Christians. Loving like God loves us. Big Idea: The path to authentic faith is about process. Process is where doubts get turned into trust. Practical ways to create a culture of dialogue: Create a habit of listening and interacting with those who don’t believe. Ask questions and listen compassionately so that you truly understand why skeptics doubt. Respect the will and opinions of the other person and listen as much as you speak, and encourage where you see the Spirit of God at work. Trust God’s spirit to lead and guide you as you interact with people. How are you helping someone take their next step with Jesus? Where are you taking your next step? In this episode, Rev. Gibson & Johnny Gwin discusses the routines, rituals, and readings from Palm Sunday at Christ Church Cathedral. Starting in the garden, reenacting Mark's dramatic Passion Play, striking the Alter and leaving the church (not our Holy Week service) in silence. Palm Sunday's powerful reading covered the Passion from the Gospel of Mark with all the emotions and parts we have heard so many times. The borrowed colt, 3 denials before the cock crows twice, the arrest, the trial, the weight of the cross, and finally the human death of the "God-Man." Jesus, the God sent to Earth and instead of wielding his power emptied himself in the body of a man - a servant that was humble and obedient all the way to his own death. Our "God-Man" on the Cross - the "Tree of Life" is the bridge between life, our hell (sin), and the connection to heaven - the love and presence of God. The enduring eternal love of God in the person of Jesus Christ - The God-Man on the Tree - is offered for all, even when we sin and imprison ourselves (and others) in Hell. God offers us the door into heaven. Jesus stands with his lantern knocking at your door that only opens from the inside. Will you open the door to Christ during these final days of Holy Week? Additional Topics: > The description and nature of Hell? > Was Judas forgiven for betraying Jesus? > Where does the term "God-Man" come from? > What is the Norse Mythology of the "Tree of Life"? > Who was Barrabbas and what became of him? > Insights and ideas to make the most out of the final week of Lent and the Easter Sunday celebration.   Weekly Readings: Isaiah 50:4-9a Philippians 2:5-11 Mark 14:1-15:47   Resources: Holman Hunt - Light of the World Painting   Pulpit to Pew is a conversation between priest and parishioner, to understand how the message translates and to explore further the weekly Sunday sermon and lessons within the Episcopal tradition and daily life.

Speaker or Performer: Pr. Mark D. Lovett Scripture Passage(s): Luke 2:41-52 Date of Delivery: January 8, 2017 In the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy SpiritWhere does one find Jesus? Where does one look for Him? In His Father's house. Here you a perfect picture of salvation and the kingdom of heaven.Mary and Joseph have lost the Holy Child. But He is not lost. They are. Didn’t you know, He asks them, that I would be in my Father’s house? I am where I am supposed to be. Why are you not with me?It’s the same with you and me. We often lose Jesus. I’m not talking about losing faith or going to hell, such talk is rarely on spot. I’m talking about losing Jesus from sight; not the sight of our eyes but of our hearts. For we walk by faith not by sight. We get in a panic. Where is He? Why is not with us? Where did He go?Such questions are usually in the midst of some great trouble or distress, some catastrophe that has come upon us. And we are at a loss of what to do or where to go to find the Lord. It seems as though His face no longer shines upon us and that His blessing and benediction are far removed from us.Of course, that is never the case. The Lord does not leave us – unless our faith has in fact grown cold, but even then it is not the Lord who has left us but we who have left Him. He never leaves. He is always in His Father’s house. Which means even if we have left Him or even if He appears to be missing from our journey as we travel through this barren wasteland of sin and death, even then we know where to find Him and how to be with Him.But like Mary and Joseph, we get into a frenzy about where He could be. He doesn’t seem to be in our prayers – which are often shallow and self-serving anyway, which is why they are not answered, as St. James says. We need to stop praying merely for our wellbeing and start praying for more faith and for the wellbeing of others. Imagine, if you prayed for more faith and for the wellbeing of others, and we all did that, then our Lord would pour out His Spirit on us – for a prayer for faith is a prayer to be in the Holy Spirit – and as we prayed for others they would pray for us. Then we would have an army praying for each of us as we all prayed for one another, which is our duty and our privilege. Of course, no one can pray for you if you do not share your burdens with them. Which is what St. Paul says, “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.”But we can’t see past our own noses most of the time. So we can’t find the Lord Jesus in our lives. He doesn’t seem to be in our daily life as trial upon trial is heaped on us so that we are nearly crushed under the weight of heartache and fear and worry. Of course, St. Peter tells us not to be surprised at these things as the come upon us for they are there to strengthen our faith, not destroy it. But usually the first thing to go is our faith; faith that our Father – made our Father by our union with the Holy Child of God in baptism – has left us to our own devises. Fear is the opposite of faith. So, too is anxiety and worry. Which is why our Lord says “Do not be afraid” and “Do not worry about tomorrow.” Fear causes us to test the Lord in forbidden ways, asking Him to turn stones into bread rather than fasting from this earthly life to feast on His word and promises.Like Mary and Joseph, we are in a frenzy to find Him. And we do look for Him. We search our relatives. Maybe they know where Jesus is. We search our houses. Maybe I left Him in the Bible on the coffee table. Or maybe He’s in the sincerity of my fear as I cry myself to sleep. We search high and low for the Christ but cannot find Him.Take heart! He is in His Father’s house! A house that you may enter freely. A house you are invited to remain in as a son. For a slave does not remain forever, but a son remains forever. And His Father’s house is His Church, His Body, where His Spirit dwells and He dwells with man.Don’t be so Protestant that you are fooled into thinking that you are His Father’s house. That somehow your heart is the house of God where He lives and stays. It’s a foolish notion. If that were the case, then why the fear? Why the anxiety in your heart? Why the loneliness and darkness? But isn’t it written that He will come and make His home with us? That the Spirit of God dwells in us so that we are His temple? Yes, it is written. But it is also written that whoever does not gather to Him scatters and that He is where His Body is. In other words, the Spirit has not made a person His temple if that person is never found in the Church of God. The Father and the Son don’t come to make their home with the person who is not first part of the Body of Christ. The more inward you look for Christ, the less you will find Him until you are worse off than Mary and Joseph. Instead of searching and finally finding the Holy Child, your search will have grown cold and either you will be left with absolute despair or else you will have fashioned a god after your own heart. Would that the Lord be merciful and leave us merely in despair so that we would continue to search. But as I said in the beginning, this is a perfect picture of salvation. For the Lord makes Himself known to those who search for Him. True, we often search and search and search after He has made Himself known because we want something more fantastic, more moving, more energizing. But the fact is, He has made Himself known in the breaking of the bread and the prayers of the Church. He has made Himself known to you and to the whole world in His holy Christian and Apostolic Church, which is His Father’s house. And once we have found Him where He has promised to be, where He said He would be and where we should expect to find Him, then, and only then, does He do as He did with Mary and Joseph, and go down with us and is even submissive to us.That is the great miracle and mystery of the Christian faith. God becomes submissive to men. Not that He is the slave of man but that He came to serve rather than to be served. He came to show us the way and carry us on the way rather than have us carve out a way for ourselves, which cannot be done. He goes down with us and answers our prayers – prayers that are now for more faith and for the wellbeing of others. He goes down with us and tends to our needs as a dutiful son tends to the needs of his aging parents. He goes down with us, even into the hell, so that He might also bring us up into the heavenly places where He and His Father dwell, in His Father’s house where there are many rooms being prepared for you and for all His children.+ In Nomine Iesu +

Brad Sullivan Proper 28, Year C November 13, 2016 Emmanuel, Houston Isaiah 65:17-25 Luke 21:5-19 Life After The Apocalypse Your worst fears are coming true, but fear not. That’s basically part of what Jesus was saying in the discourse to his disciples that we heard today. “Guys, you’re about to be living in Diaspora again. You are about to be scattered among the nations, living in places that don’t really support your faith. The Temple that you love so much…it’s gonna be gone in 40 years, and in about 100 years, Israel is going to be gone too.” Jesus didn’t get that specific with the timeline, but he was telling them about the future destruction of the temple and of the nation of Israel itself. “Continuing to live out your faith is not going to be easy, guys,” Jesus was saying. “You won’t be able to depend on the beauty or even the existence of the Temple. You will have no state, no Jewish government to allow you to keep in the ways of your faith. Also, y’all who are following in my way, before the total destruction of Israel, you’re even going to be persecuted within Israel. So here then, is how y’all will need to live post apocalypse.” “Be steadfast in your faith, more than ever. Trust in God and in the ways of his Gospel, because you will have no temple, nor any government to turn to. You will have no great community around you making it easy for you to live out your faith. So be steadfast, live out your faith with intentionality. Live out your faith with each other, and continue to follow in my ways, even when the culture around you says and does otherwise.” As disciples of Jesus in the 21st century, we find ourselves in a much less dire but similar situation to what Jesus was preparing his disciples for. In America, we’re not exactly persecuted for our faith, but we do live in a culture that often says and does things counter to the Gospel. Truth be told, we often end up taking that culture as our own, and not following in the ways of Jesus ourselves all that well. Some of Jesus’ teachings are rather difficult and don’t exactly jive with our mainstream culture or even our natural inclinations. “For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it,” Jesus said. (Matthew 16:25) ‘You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, (Matthew 5:43-44) ‘You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also;’ (Matthew 5:38-39) Not easy, right. If someone were to punch me, I would really want to punch them back. Instead, I’m supposed to not lose my temper, not give into my anger and my hurt, and instead take a breath and say, “ok, do you need to hit me again, because if you do, here I am, you can.” I believe that way of Jesus will bring about more peace and love in the world; I think it might actually resolve the situation, but it’s not exactly easy, and it’s not exactly the American way. “Speak softly but carry a big stick” is a far cry from “turn the other cheek.” As Christians, we are somewhat a people in diaspora. We don’t live in a Christian nation. We don’t live in a Christian theocracy like the first century nation of Israel. We don’t have some overarching governmental authority to help guide us and keep us in our faith. As Wendy Claire Barrie wrote in her book, Faith at Home, the way of Jesus is “counter-cultural, revolutionary, and not quite what mainstream culture would have us believe.” So, she writes about many ways we can live out our faith at home or at any time, when we’re not surrounded and supported by our church buildings, by the sanctuary that our church community makes for us. Make the dinner table the altar in your house. Prepare your meals and then eat together in such a way that the whole meal is a prayer, in which you share your stories of faith, you share where Jesus has been working in your life. Offer up that meal to God in remembrance of Jesus, like we do here on Sunday morning. Turn your bedtime into a time of reflection like Jesus took when he went away to a lonely place so often to pray and offer up his life to God, take that time at bedtime to God the day that is past: the good, the bad. “How have I turned away from Jesus? Where have I seen Jesus in my life?” Offer that time of reflection to God as you end your day, and as you rise in the morning, dedicate the day to come to God. Look for all those times and places where you may see him. You will have turned your bedroom into a sanctuary, into a sacred space for God. Rather than seeking retribution when wronged, seek peace and forgiveness, following after the ways of Jesus. “Follow my way anywhere and everywhere,” Jesus said. That’s another part of what Jesus was teaching his disciples when he told them that the temple would be torn down. Jesus revealed to his disciples that when the temple was gone, they would need to and also be able to find him and follow in his ways anywhere in the world. That was an apocalypse for them, apocalypse meaning a revealing, a revelation. “God’s not just here in the Temple, or just here in Israel,” Jesus was saying. “God is everywhere and we can live out our faith anywhere.” So too do we get to find God anywhere in the world, anywhere in our lives. That’s life after the apocalypse, life after the revealing. “Your worst fears are coming true,” Jesus was saying, “but fear not, for you can find God anywhere.” For many folks, people’s worst fears came true when Donald Trump was elected president. To be fair, I think a lot of people’s worst fears came true when Barak Obama was elected president…and before that, and before that. People’s worst fears often come true when we elect a new president (or when darn near anything happens that people don’t like). In both cases, with both our president-elect and our current president, I think some of people’s fears were probably well-founded. Presidents make bad decisions, we see who is coming, and we expect those bad decisions. I think also that some of those fears are not well founded, but largely emotional reactions that get so worked up that we’re afraid it’s all coming to an end, but I don’t think that particular apocalypse is going to happen because of who’s sitting in office. The real apocalypse for me, the real revelation has been to see how much hope or despair we place in one person. I’ve seen it written and heard it said many times that “We need to bring God back to our country.” When did he leave? Perhaps we at least thought he left when anyone started thinking that it is up to our president or anyone in our government to allow us to believe in God, follow in the ways of Jesus, or teach us how to follow in the ways of Jesus. I don’t want the government teaching us how to follow in Jesus’ ways. They suck at it. Sorry, but they do. Whether we’re talking about the president or congress or any government official, whoever it is, is not Jesus. That one person, whoever it is, is not in charge of us following in the ways of Jesus. Regardless of who is president, regardless of if we like that person or not, we are still a people in diaspora. We are still disciples of Jesus living among a nation, within a culture that does not seek first and foremost to follow in Jesus’ way, and it is not up to any president to teach people to follow in Jesus’ way. It is not up to a president or anyone else to teach our children to follow in Jesus’ way. It is not up to a president or anyone else to show people the light of the Gospel, the love of Jesus, and the peace of his way. It is rather, up to us, Jesus’ disciples, to show people the light of the Gospel. It is up to us, Jesus’ disciples, to show people the love of Jesus. It is up to us, Jesus’ disciples, to show people to peace of Jesus’ way. It is also up to us to notice all of the times, and places, and ways that we see Jesus in the world. That is life after the apocalypse. God still the creator, ruler, and redeemer of all creation. God is still anywhere and everywhere in the world, and as disciples of Jesus in this house or in our own houses, or anywhere in the world, we get to see God’s presence and point it out. Regardless of what anything in the culture or world around us may say, regardless of whether our worst fears have come true or our prayers have been answered, the question we ask ourselves is: “What do we give our hearts to?” That’s what belief really is, not just what we think is true, but what do we live and follow? What do we give our hearts to? Living in diaspora, it is easy to give our hearts to all kinds of ways that are not the way of Jesus, and we usually do so for really good reasons, like being connected with other people or seeking solace from the storms of life. At the same time, living in Diaspora, we can find Jesus and find people following in his ways in all sorts of places and situations that on the surface don’t seem particularly Jesusy. Jesus is alive and well in all kinds of ways and places, in our religious culture and even in the culture around us. In giving our hearts to Jesus, we don’t need to rail against and point out all the places, and people, and situations that are “bad and evil” and say, “Jesus isn’t there.” Jesus might argue that point with us. Giving our hearts to Jesus and living in disapora, living in a culture that is not particularly Christian, we get to point out all the ways and places that Jesus is there, all of the ways and places where we see Jesus in the culture and the lives of people all around us. Even in the places where people think, “I shouldn’t tell the priest that I’m going here tonight...it’s Saturday night, I’ll pray on Sunday morning.” No. If you’re somewhere on Saturday night, Jesus is there too, and you get to point it out. You get to notice, and see, and show where all the blessing are in this world. That’s life after the apocalypse. Wherever we see grace, we see the way of Jesus. Wherever we see forgiveness and love, we see the way of Jesus. Wherever we see people doing their best to make the right choice, we see the way of Jesus. Even living in disapora, even living in times when our worst fears have come true, fear not, Jesus says. Fear not, and give your hearts to me. Do not fight against each other or the culture around you, but follow in my ways, practice your faith even if it is counter-cultural, and then open your eyes to see me everywhere in the world around you. Amen.
