This week I am joined by Dr. Kutter Callaway for a special spooky edition of the podcast. Kutter recently released a high-quality podcast called "Be Afraid". His podcast takes you on a journey into the heart of one of the most popular genres of contemporary film and television: horror. Each episode discusses the nature of our fears and why we just can't seem to look away from the things that terrify us. The show features interviews with major Hollywood filmmakers, well-known film critics, leading psychologists, and even a few exorcists. This podcast isn't about how to avoid fear, how to leverage it, or even whether it's okay to be afraid. Instead, it's an exercise in learning how to fear rightly.  Kutter and I take a deep dive into the show, discuss our own fears, wrestle with our own demons, and attempt to learn how to fear well. Enjoy! RESOURCES: KutterCallaway.Com Be Afraid Podcast *A special thanks to Josh Gilbert, Marty Fredrick, and Dan Koch for their continued support of the pod.

Why do we like horror films? Why do we gravitate to the theatre for a collective catharsis—living out our nightmares vicariously through the unwitting victim on the screen? What draws us to the shadows? All the more poignant for the Christian who shouldn't watch the bad movies. But let's take the point seriously: How might we watch horror films Christianly? Which is to say: How do we watch them well?Theologian and film critic Kutter Callaway (Fuller Theological Seminary) joins Evan Rosa for a discussion of some truly frightening horror films. His new podcast “Be Afraid” is produced by Christianity Today, and explores horror films and the theology and psychology of fearing rightly. In addition to discussing some of our favorite scary movies Kutter Callaway and Evan Rosa discuss: The psychology of fear and why people might willingly rehearse their fears; the radical vulnerability of human life that makes us susceptible to horrors; the Bible as horror genre; the human inclination toward the numinous, unknown, mysterious, and uncanny; managing our terror about death; and ultimately, how to fear rightly. This episode was made possible in part by the generous support of the Tyndale House Foundation. This week on Be Afraid, we consider the ways in which Supernatural Horror helps us fear rightly by offering an invitation to see and acknowledge the reality of supernatural evil (and then to consider what it would mean if it didn't just feel true but was actually true). The genre not only highlights the ways in which evil is mysterious, uncontrollable, and beyond explanation, but in light of this mystery, it exposes us as vulnerable before the wholly other. Sharing in each others' vulnerability is what makes compassion and empathy possible. But just a word of warning. Listener discretion is advised. Joining us this week: Scott Teems is a screenwriter and director of numerous films and TV shows. Wes Craven is a well known American filmmaker who is considered by many to be the master of horror. This week on Be Afraid, we take a hard look at the origin of our fears and consider whether films in the horror genre might actually help us face those fears rather than be held captive by them. Everybody's story is unique, but the one thing we all hold in common is that all of our fears–whatever they may be–start somewhere. They have an origin… which means that our ability to understand how horror films not only tap into our deepest fears but also give us an opportunity to wrestle with what terrorizes us depends upon our willingness to identify and explore the moments in our lives when we first learned to fear.  Joining us this week: Scott Derrickson is a filmmaker whose projects include, among others, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Dr. Strange, and The Black Phone.  Pete Docter is a filmmaker, animator, and voice actor. After the global pandemic shut down theaters, production studios like Blumhouse and A24 provided a shot in the arm to box offices around the world with the success of horror films like The Black Phone, Smile, and Halloween Ends. But these aren't exceptions or isolated incidents - if anything, the demand for horror stories is only increasing. In this introductory episode, we consider whether the current revival in horror films is, in some way, connected to the horrors we are all facing in the real world. We also take a look at some of the more horrific passages in Scripture. What's the value of these stories, and why do we have such a hard time reading them, much less reflecting on them, studying them, and examining them over and over again as part of our spiritual practice? Why would the bible itself invite us to not simply know about, but to meditate on graphic stories of torture, violence, and evil?  Joining us this week: Dr. Pamela Ebstyne King is the Peter L. Saddleback Church Content Development Pastor is joined by Dr. Kutter Callaway to discuss theology and film. Movies have a powerful and interesting way of capturing our attention, our emotions, and our thought life. What does this say about us? And how does this relate to our relationship with God? This conversation looks to answer these questions along with talking about common religious themes and motifs in movies, the need to be discerning against heresy in film, and the power of emotion and what it says about being made in the image of God.Kutter Callaway is the William K. Brehm Chair of Worship, Theology, and the Arts, as well as associate dean of the Center for Advanced Theological Studies, and associate professor of theology and culture. The holidays are here and you know what that means? Awkward conversations about religion and politics with family, friends, and coworkers. Today on the podcast I am bringing you some wisdom... rules even... from two friends who work at the intersection of religion and the psychological sciences. Sarah Lane Ritchie and Kutter Callaway were part of the live podcast last week in San Diego and after hearing these 'rules' for the holidays, I knew I needed to share them ASAP. The live event included a bunch of other segments that engaged an upcoming film J.E.S.U.A.  The rest of the podcast will come out near the release of the film. I moved the rules from the end of the conversation to the beginning, so after that segment you will go back in time to the beginning of my chat with Sarah and Kutter. Here are the 7 rules. You are NOT your ideas Prioritize Sleep Make Yourself Start (or keep) Meditating (here's the Examen app I mentioned) Be a Documentarian - talk by listening Acknowledge Their Trauma... including being in a family with you and your deconstructive path Remember Everyone You See and Love Will Die Criticism is a Form of Pursuit   This episode was sponsored by the upcoming documentary film J.E.S.U.S.A.  J.E.S.U.S.A. is an in-depth exploration of the relationship between Christianity and American nationalism and the violence that can often emerge from it. Far from a new phenomenon, this documentary traces the co-opting of Christianity by the state all the way back to when the Christian faith became the official religion of the Roman Empire. Through interviews with a diverse group of scholars, pastors, historians, and activists, this film shows how specific readings of the Bible have led many Christians to confuse their devotion to Jesus with their dedication to the state. The film helps viewers rediscover and restore long-held Christian beliefs regarding nonviolence, inspiring Christians to become purveyors of peace rather than enablers of conflict and violence. The documentary will be released for general viewing on February 25, 2020, and will be available on many streaming platforms for rental or purchase. If you wish to help organize a showing for your church or organization, please contact the production team here. The film includes some amazing people like David Bentley Hart, Suzanne Ross, Brian Zahnd, Osheta Moore, Diana Butler Bass, Greg Boyd, and many more. He said he had a conversation with himself on why he believes what he believes, which, in and of itself, is doubt. He simply wanted to confirm his faith in God when writing this book. Should all Christians be married? Although we might quickly respond "no," our cultural stories and norms―including those in the church―often communicate "yes!" This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we're joined by Kutter Callaway, an author and assistant professor of theology and culture. We talk about this and how culture is redefining marriage and singleness... and what this means for those who follow Jesus. If you've ever turned on the TV or read a newspaper in the last few years, it's pretty apparent that marriage is being redefined by the culture, and the purpose that the Church places on this institution is also changing. It's time to redefine the value of marriage and singleness. In This Episode You'll Learn: What the Bible teaches about the institution of marriage. Ways to think about biblical marriage and the reasons to get married. How the legal and cultural definitions of marriage differ from the Bible. How our narratives have limited our understanding of marriage. Ways that Christians talk about marriage and singleness that may be a hindrance to many. How we can craft a new story that transforms the way we look at marriage and affirms the contributions of all to the body of Christ. http://getpodcast.reviews/id/1209249450 (Get started here...) http://getpodcast.reviews/id/1209249450 () From this episode: “Think about the language you use to talk about marriage to single people. Is it life giving or limiting? Is it filled with a ‘wait for God' focus, or a ‘fullness in Christ' focus? If single, what aspect of your identity and overall happiness is based on ‘some day' getting married? Have you placed limitations on all that God wants to do in and through your life as you wait for some possible future union?”   Each week the Big 3 will give you immediate action steps to get you started.https://123lifeschool.clickfunnels.com/optin_box/mcowb8wwscvlqriy ()Download today's https://123lifeschool.clickfunnels.com/optin_box/mcowb8wwscvlqriy (BIG 3 right now).
