Nineb Lamassu, Executive Director of the Peace Sustainable Foundation, discusses the naming of the foundation's youth cultural centre in Nineveh (Mosul), Iraq, the Qallaita Centre. The centre is named in honour of Qasha Yousip Qallaita, founder of the first Assyrian school in Mosul. Lamassu says he proposed the idea and persuaded the organisation's central committee to approve the name. The decision reflects respect for Assyrian heritage and aims to preserve cultural history through this centre's activities.
Lamassu Falling: A Novelette of Ancient Assyria in the Days of Jonah by Arturo R. OrtizPlagues and wars gradually engulf the mighty nation of Assyria. An ominous portent in the heavens spells doom for the great city of Nineveh as a ruthless and power-hungry pagan plots to make himself ruler of Nineveh. A prophet of the God of Israel warns the Ninevites their city will fall in just forty days, and a war of the gods begins. Caught in the midst are the beautiful daughter of Nineveh's governor and an Assyrian war hero who is disheartened with the gods of Assyria. Violence erupts in Nineveh as cruel pagans force families to sacrifice their beloved children to the heathen gods. The governor of Nineveh is about to witness the power of the true God. Will he continue to serve the bloodthirsty war gods of Assyria, or will he turn to the benevolent God of Israel? The fate of Nineveh and the entire Assyrian nation hangs in the balance.Ortiz is a retired physicist who earned a master's degree in physics from California State University (Northridge) and a master's degree in space studies from the University of North Dakota. ONE OF THE MYSTERIES of the Bible is why there are no accounts of priests or prophets casting out demons. Why is that? This is odd because the pagan neighbors of the Israelites knew about demons and had an entire library of rituals and spells for casting them out. And in the early 1st century, Jesus and the apostles had their hands full casting demons out of people all over Judea and the Mediterranean world.Joining us to explore the presence of demonic entities in the Old Testament and their connection to ancient pagan deities is our monthly Iron and Myth crew: Doug Van Dorn (www.douglasvandorn.com), author of Giants: Sons of the Gods, Dr. Judd Burton (www.BurtonBeyond.net), director of The Institute of Biblical Anthropology, and Brian Godawa (www.Godawa.com), best-selling author of Chronicles of the Nephilim, Chronicles of the Watchers, and the theological thriller Cruel Logic. We discuss various passages and linguistic connections that suggest the existence of demons in the Hebrew Bible. We also delve into the significance of the desert as a place associated with chaos and demonic activity. The conversation touches on the rituals and practices related to demons, including the naming and mocking of these entities. We conclude with an examination of Azazel and the connection between the demonic realm and the wilderness. The conversation explores the presence of supernatural entities in ancient texts and their connection to demonic activity. The term Abarim is discussed as a name for Mount Nebo, associated with spirits on the other side of the veil—namely, the Rephaim. And we look at Lilith, a vampiric creature mentioned in Isaiah 34:14 (usually translated into English as “night bird”) in relation to ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean traditions. We also take a look at the significance of Psalm 91 and its references to pestilence, terror, and destruction as names of entities. Ultimately, however, we can only speculate on why we don't see exorcisms in the Old Testament. Is it possible that the practice only became necessary with the appearance of the Messiah in the Holy Land?
Hold onto your halos, skeptics and scripture-skimmers! The latest episode of Sacrilegious Discourse is here, and we're taking a blasphemous bash at those so-called heavenly henchmen - angels. Yes, you read that right, it's time for "F*ck Angels," where we serve up a heaping portion of irreverence, topped with a side of cheeky insights. In this divine roast session, we're not just winging it; we dive deep into the celestial bureaucracy of angelic beings with the gusto of a sinner at confession. We kick things off with a candid reminder of our Patreon-exclusive content, where we lure you with angels only to pull the rug out from under your feet with a curveball topic like Lamassu. Spoiler alert: they're not as fluffy as cherubs, and definitely more interesting. From the holy hitmen of the Abrahamic traditions to the rank-and-file messenger boys, we dissect the angelic hierarchy with the precision of a theologian who's had one too many sacrilegious sips. Are these divine drones superior to humans or just sparkly strap-ons of the Almighty? We'll let you decide, but not before we take you through a linguistic journey that explores why so many angelic names end in 'el' and make you question whether you're listening to a podcast or attending a clandestine angelology seminar.Ever heard of the Ophanim? No? Well, they're like God's personal UFOs, according to medieval scholar Maimonides, and we're here to break down the Top 10 Angelic Orders like it's a Billboard chart for heavenly creatures. And if that's not enough to ruffle your feathers, wait until we tackle the transformation of cherubs from badass biblical bouncers to diaper-clad toddlers of Renaissance art.Don't expect harps and halos here; we're all about the nitty-gritty, the esoteric, and the downright weird. Whether it's drawing parallels between Assyrian deities and Ezekiel's trippy visions or calling out the psychopomp trope in pop culture, we're serving it with a side of snark. So if you're ready to laugh in the face of divinity and question everything you thought you knew about angels, tune in, subscribe, and prepare to have your celestial assumptions turned upside down. This isn't your grandma's Sunday school lesson, folks. It's Sacrilegious Discourse's "F*ck Angels," where we make it our heavenly mission to entertain and enlighten you, one irreverent jab at a time.Join us on DISCORD: https://discord.gg/8RwwMrb5zKNOW hosting LIVE episodes every Monday and Wednesday night on YouTube and Twitch!**Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/sacreligious_discourse**YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5rpfCzaWhEaP198xgY7CFw Join Acast+ to enjoy our podcast adfree! https://plus.acast.com/s/sacrilegiousiscourse. Today we look at Pazuzu, Lamashtu, Samanu, Mushussu, and Lamassu. These are not the great gods of myth, nor are they the personal gods that would have absorbed the majority of the average Mesopotamian's attention and worship. They exist somewhere in the middle, in the realm of magic, of diseases, of charms, and of the middle spirit realms. This means there isn't a good place to talk about them - they don't come up much in the main narratives of history or myth, and when talking about magic it is usually the rituals and systems that grab the attention more than the demonic actors, at least among those who nowadays don't believe in the existance of these beings. But today we will correct that with a dedicated episode just for them. I have books! About Ancient Mesopotamia! And more on the way! Today's show is from a time before the trillion (or even billion) dollar market cap; Before Vitalik had ever spoken the word Ethereum; Before taproot, segwit, stock-to-flow and the institutional investing thesis. In the early days, Bitcoin was the absolute state of the art and the basis for an entirely new and utterly revolutionary form of technology. In this episode you'll get a peek at how we discussed it before everything that would happen had happened. This episode is sponsored by Nexo.io.Original show notes for episode 14 - In Search of GoldilocksListener mail: “Microtransaction powered social networks”Constance Choi, legal council at payward brings us up to speed on DC, Fincen & TreasuryThe retroactive Bitcoin paywallCounterintuitive: Smaller amounts equal larger transactions?1 Megabyte blocks, good or bad?Who needs banks? Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are one of my favorite subjects to talk about and I got a chance this week to sit down and chat with Zach Harvey? Zach Harvey is the CEO of Lamassu, an early and active provider of cryptocurrency vending machines. Lamassu is the Bitcoin ATM market leader. In its first year, it has built over 250 Bitcoin ATMs, delivered to 150 operators, in 40 countries. I had the honor of having him as a guest on my show where we got into talking about… How he started in Israel as a guitar shop owner and was the first store to accept Bitcoin… Why buying Bitcoin from a Bitcoin ATM can benefit you as opposed to using an exchange... We also get some of his views on investing in the current market and how he sees businesses using cryptocurrencies as a form of accepting payments in the future… This is definitely a show you don't want to miss. The Song of Lamma and the song of Silver, two further adventures in the Kumarbi cycle. Tessub may be the Hurrian king in heaven, but Kumarbi still wants to pull him down, and hatches scheme after scheme to defeat his usurper. Lamma is an obscure god, possibly a Lamassu, possibly the god Karhuhi, but he will be turned to Kumarbi's side and sent to battle Tessub. Silver is a demi-god, a champion of mortal mother and divine father, who will even overcome his father on his way to the throne. Online at oldeststories.net

Michael Rakowitz, Iraqi-American artist of Fourth Plinth commission 'The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist' and author of upcoming cookbook A House With A Date Palm Will Never Starve, to be released in the summer of 2019. Rakowitz’s Lamassu is made from empty tins of Iraqi date syrup, alluding to the fact that historical monuments are not the only thing destroyed by war; they also decimate local economies, including the industry for date syrup which collapsed as a result of the war. A House With A Date Palm Will Never Starve by Michael Rakowitz is out June 2019, published by Plinth Instagram: @PlinthUk Twitter: @PlinthUkArt
For the 12th edition of the 'Fourth Plinth' project in Trafalgar Square London, the artist Michael Rakowitz unveils 'The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist'. The sculpture is inspired by Lamassu, a 7th century winged bull which was destroyed near Mosul by ISIS in 2015. The piece is made out of 10,500 empty Iraqi date syrup cans. Michael Rakowitz talks to us about heritage, the mourning of the dead through objects, and the treasures found in everyday trash. More on www.culturealt.com
Kari and Kelly have known about Bitcoin since the early days...one got in, the other is hodling on to some bithurt. In this episode, the ladies talk about their histories with cryptocurrencies and the insane amount of regret they – and other people they know – have about not buying in soon enough (or not hodling on long enough). Don’t know what hodl means? No prob, Kelly’s got you covered with a dramatic reading of the HODL forum post that went viral. There’s also an acapella rendition of Hodl On for One More Day to the tune of the Wilson Phillips song. The ladies discuss various use cases for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, including remittance to developing countries and charities that want transparency and to ensure funds get to the right place. In countries where hyperinflation is running rampant (like Venezuela), Bitcoin is literally saving lives. Kari and Kelly also talk about the various ways you can get Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dash and other cryptocurrencies (see related links, below). There are traditional exchanges, or you can meet up with a dude from Craigslist or Facebook, or you can go to New Hampshire and try to hunt down a Bitcoin millionaire – the ladies give you some clues on what to look for in order to find one. Fortunately for Kelly, there’s a Bitcoin Embassy in Montreal that has Bitcoin ATMs she can buy crypto from. Unfortunately for Kelly, that Bitcoin Embassy is closed until the day after the ladies leave the city. Luckily, Chainsaw is in Montreal for a bachelor party! Chainsaw is a Bitcoin bro Kari’s known for years, and the ladies met up with him while he was in town. He set Kelly up with a Bitcoin wallet, now she just needs to put some crypto in there. To thank him for his help, the Gringas helped Chainsaw miss his plane back to Central America. Two days later, he’s still in Montreal.
