This week, Tommy is joined by actress Britt Robertson who currently stars in The Merry Gentlemen on Netflix. You know and love Britt from roles in Life Unexpected, The Secret Circle, The Rookie:Feds, I Still Believe, and so much more. In The Merry Gentlemen, Britt plays Ashley, a Broadway dancer who returns home to save her parent's small-town nightclub by staging an all-male Christmas themed review, led by Chad Michael Murray. Yes, this movie is quite steamy, but it's also full of heart and Britt captures the magic of Christmas perfectly. Today, Britt opens up about why it was a no-brainer joining this film, her journey of learning that work doesn't have to be the only thing that defines who she is as a person, how she bonded with Chad Michael Murray over hair, what teaming up with him was like for this film, her ideal sequel idea, why sometimes you need to be pushed out of your circumstances to open the door for life-changing opportunities, why its okay to not always be in control, how she is now conscious of making sure all of her cups are as full as possible, some eye opening things she has learned in therapy, where she sees herself in the future professionally, why she doesn't like to go to movies with anyone she knows and so much more.Subscribe, rate and review this episode if you enjoyed this conversation!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Emma Clarke is Chief Executive of Weston Park Cancer Charity. The charity has been in existence for 30 years and supports Weston Park Cancer Centre, which serves the population of South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. The charity invests in research, facilities and equipment, and also provides care through finance, complementary therapies, and advice.Emma was born on the Manor estate in Sheffield. She went for a bar job on the same day that she interviewed for her first role in the voluntary sector. Her first job was for a disabled children and young people's charity in London. She has risen to Chief Executive through a non-conventional route in that she hasn't been to university. For Emma, leadership is about being real and about being human. She says “relationships are fundamental.” She aims to foster a culture of belonging, of connection, and of pride in the work of the organisation. She believes that part of compassionate leadership is to give people a sense of autonomy and agency. She is mindful of ‘the shadow of the leader' and recognises that her own actions need to be purposeful and sensitive. Part of her role is to make sense for her colleagues of the complex environment in which they operate.Since assuming the Chief Executive role Emma has steered the charity through Covid, the economic crisis and challenging times in the NHS. She says a crisis “cuts through the noise.” Covid compelled her to rely on her values, and through that she gained confidence in her leadership. Now in the middle of the NHS crisis, she is optimistic about the future: she sees a lot of compassion, and she is surrounded by good people. She is committed to amplifying the good.As the Chief Executive of a charity, Emma has to work constructively with her trustees. She says that she doesn't see them as a group of people to report to, but rather a group of peers who are experienced and keen to contribute to the success of the organisation. It's up to Emma to make the most of the opportunity that they represent, by asking for help, asking questions and encouraging constructive challenge.Last year Emma introduced Sarah Markham of Calm-in-a-Box, a wellbeing consultancy, to the charity. The team at Weston Park had just finished hybrid working for almost two years and a hard winter loomed. Sarah ran a series of four sessions designed to support the mental health of the team and help them thrive through difficult circumstances. CALM is an acronym that relates to connection, all of me, energy (let me rest), and motivation. Emma says that often in the voluntary sector people can be so invested in the aims of the organisation that they feel guilty about taking the rest. The CALM programme has given them a language to talk about rest in the context of the work they do.Navigating the charity through the Covid crisis is Emma's proudest work-related achievement. It led her to a renewed focus on the most disadvantaged and marginalised of the charity's clients, as they were affected disproportionately by the pandemic.Emma says she makes mistakes every day, but the important thing “is not to dwell on it.” She says “mistakes happen, they're part of everyday life.” Imposter syndrome held her back for a long time, and she has had to work hard to challenge her limiting beliefs.Emma says an experience that has changed her fundamentally is finding that her and her husband were unable to have children. It's shaped who she is, but also she feels it is something she needs to be open about, so that other women who aspire to senior roles don't assume that they have to choose between children and a career. Jodie Day's ‘Living the Life Unexpected' helped Emma to come to terms with the situation.Emma's self-care regime involves hot yoga, a podcast out on a walk or in the bath, and gardening. And she has joined the National Trust: self-care to her often means learning and putting her brain to use in a...

Rain Perry's new show, "This is Water: Where Do We Go From Here?"

Ojai's own Rain Perry, singer-songwriter known for her lyrical prowess and crystal-clear voice, has been working on a one-woman show, which opens Thursday, October 13 and runs through October 22nd (Thursday, Friday and Saturday both weekends) at Kim Maxwell Studio, 226 West Ojai Avenue, #102. All shows are at 8 p.m. The show is named after David Foster Wallace's viral commencement address, "This Is Water," which emphasizes the true purpose of education and empathy. Perry was wrestling with questions of race and identity during the pandemic and George Floyd protests and found it the perfect metaphor. The show includes eight songs from her 9-song album "A White Album" which was just released and available on Itunes and Spotify or through her website. It debuted on the Folk Music Chart at no. 11 and has received rave reviews, including Glide Magazine's "it distill(s) complicated issues fraught with politics and passion through a prism of compassion and understanding." Bill Bentley of Americana Highways magazine wrote, "There are times on "A White Album" where the whole thing feels like it is making the world tilt in a new direction. These are songs which are perfectly capable of giving life a whole new meaning. People like Rain Perry don't come around that often. They just don't." Perry said one message is for white people to acknowledge their privilege and to question each other, or, as she said, "Calling people in," rather than calling them out. She also used the folk expression, "Collect your cousins," for a reckoning on race and culture. This play is being directed by Kim Maxwell, who also directed Rain's much-acclaimed 2008 show, "Cinderblock Bookshelves," with accompaniment from Austin, Texas-based Mark Hallman. Perry said that a grant from the Ojai Arts Commission helped produce the play as well. It "was a sequel of sorts to 'Cinderblock Bookshelves'," she said. “I want to look back at my same childhood, but this time through the lens of race.” Hallman, owner of the iconic Congress House studio, has produced music by Carole King, Tom Russell (who recorded one of Rain's songs) and Eliza Gylkison and Ani Di Franco. He was the subject of a well-received 2016 documentary film, "The Shopkeeper," that Perry wrote and directed about the post-Napster travails of the music business, through Hallman's and other musicians' struggles to stay afloat in the streaming era. Perry talked about growing up in Ojai, her eccentric family, early mentors and raising her children, as well as sharing insights into the creative side of her life, the success of selling a song, "Beautiful Tree," that became the theme of a popular CW Network show, "Life Unexpected," and her song "Yosemite" has been recorded by Tom Russell and Nanci Griffith. We did not talk about Lake Casitas storage capacity, how grasshoppers turn into locusts or how Auguste Escoffier's military service informed his "brigade de cuisine" system. For more information: www.rainperry.com/this_is_water Rain Perry's "White Album" which includes all nine songs on her show.
