This week we're discussing Lost Themes IV: Noir, the latest album by legendary movie director John Carpenter. Collaborating with his son, Cody Carpenter and his godson, Daniel Davies, this is Carpenter's fourth album and it's a ton of fun. Like previous Lost Themes albums, there are a ton of synths, 80s rock guitars, and driving electronic rhythms. Is it reinventing the wheel? Definitely not. But it's well done and scratches a specific itch.Closing track: "The Demon's Shadow"Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexTom @tomosmansoundsHistory Tom's stuff:Music on Spotify, ApplePodcast on Spotify, YouTube, AppleSubstackWebsite

Among the many things we'd been looking forward to in the year of 2021 was the release of Lost Themes III: Alive After Death, the third collection of John Carpenter's original, non-soundtrack musical compositions. And, now that it's here, we can safely say -- and Chris DOES say so, more than once -- that this album is an absolute banger! We got to hear a lot of these tracks when they were released as singles last year, but your humble hosts and Carpenter aficionados think this album is best enjoyed in its entirety. Nick and Chris do another track-by-track review and commentary of this Sacred Bones Records release, and along the way, we imagine the cinematic visions this music might inspire, consider the locked-in groove that Carpenter and his band (son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies) have established over several albums, and even figure out the correct pronunciation of Moog! Plus, Chris braves the brutal world of Australian horror filmmaker Greg McLean, Nick has a bloody good time with an Italian slasher-movie classic, and we celebrate another one of our favorite cinematic composers, Trent Reznor.

Sadly, Chris and Nick missed all of those shows, but the John Carpenter Live Retrospective Blu-Ray from Storm King Productions is as close as we could get to actually being there. For our first episode of 2021, we take a look at this one-of-a-kind concert film, a must-have for fans of John Carpenter's composing and a rare glimpse of John Carpenter, unlikely rock star (for better and, certainly, for worse, this ain't no Coupe De Villes!). Along with our thoughts on that, we also get into the filmographies of two other masters of horror whose careers paralleled Carpenter's in some surprising ways -- and dream up an idea for a concert tour that NEEDS to happen when we can all go see live music again!

John Carpenter is responsible for some of the most iconic horror movies of all time. These movies are famous for both their visual imagery and compelling soundtracks, many of which Carpenter wrote and performed himself. Since "retiring" from filmmaking, Carpenter has gone on to produce two albums, Lost Themes I and II. These albums offer an excellent introduction to Carpenter's influential sound and sheer mastery at producing evocative and thematic music. In this episode, we talk about Carpenter's influences, his music and unique sound, and his lasting influence on the genre of synthwave.Music Discussed-----------------Lost Themes by John CarpenterLost Themes II by John CarpenterAnthology: Movie Themes 1974-1998 by John CarpenterRelated Links-------------Look, John Carpenter Just Wants to Make Music, OK?John Carpenter Talks To Us About Playing MusicJohn Carpenter: The Horror MasterJohn Carpenter on the Music That Made Him a Horror IconSound On Sound: John CarpenterThe Synth Sounds of John Carpenter by ReverbCredits -------- Music by: 2Mello  Artwork by: Patsy McDowell  Ross on Twitter Birk on Twitter Follow Night Clerk Radio on Twitter for updates

We also recap some of our quarantine film viewing and discuss some of our favorite film composers of this generation -- many of whom have some distinctive John Carpenter influences of their own. Vi pratar också om: Lost Themes, Tenacious D, Halloween, Escape from New York, Assault on Precinct 13, Fantômas, Devil Doll, Sigh, Diabolical Masquerade, Final Destination, Zombi, Fabio Frizzi, Goblin, Dark Star, John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Dan O'Bannon, Alien, Jodorowsky's Dune, Star Trek, den kanske inte helt vedertagna genren "dirty space", Bill Taylor, John Yager, Rob Zombie, William Shatner, Tangerine Dream, Clive Barker, Hellraiser, Human Remains, Kreta, Knossos, The Fog, Jamie Lee Curtis, Psycho, Janet Leigh, Rob Bottin, The Thing, We Are Still Here, Alice Cooper, Welcome to my Nightmare, Dark Funeral, Stephen King, Christine, Firestarter, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, Det, Cujo, Jurtjyrkogården, The Splash Band, Höfner Guitars, The Coup de Villes, Big Trouble in Little China, Alan Howarth, Waiting out the Eighties, Alan Vega, Suicide, Kurt Russell, Bret Easton Ellis, Turtles, Mortal Kombat, Kozure Okami, Sentinel Returns, Playstation, Psygnosis, Shadow of the Beast, Amiga, Sega Mega Drive, Ecstatica, Wipeout, Vampires, Ghosts of Mars, In the Mouth of Madness, Resident Evil och Silent Hill. Nostalgi, löst tyckande och akademisk analys i en salig röra.

Nearing our 3-yr. anniversary, the inkwell is far from dry -- especially in the presence of cartoonists Ed Reynolds (of Fermented Zen) and Chuck Collins (of Bounce)! Shuffling up the format this week, we kick off the episode with an interview to explore the Zen/Bounce style and philosophy, and then (from 0:30:00 on) we dive straight into Ed & Chuck's album of choice. Director John Carpenter, known for scoring most of his early films, has never released a studio album... that is, not until Lost Themes! Steeped in hazy imagery, Lost Themes is a fanciful excursion through your mind's own creations. Join us for this in-depth analysis! Then, starting at 1:45:38, we begin a round table discussion on the use of music in cartoons. Ever since the golden age of American animation, have cartoons been less musical? Continue reading

We wrap up our week-long tribute to Galatea Films by reviewing their most batshit (or penguin-shit) film, Penguigeddon! We've been waiting a LONG time for this one. We came upon this film (and subsequently the film company) when Austin found it advertised in a Russellville, Arkansas newspaper archive, reading "When the penguins attack, we all die!" Well, Austin was finally able to track down a bootleg copy of the film, and what emerges is a fucked-up lost piece of film history that you have to see to believe. Unfortunately we couldn't include clips due to a deal with the mostly reclusive filmmakers, BUT we hope you have fun hearing us try to describe the experience! Embedded soundtrack: Lost Themes by John CarpenterEnd song: "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" by Alice Cooper We were also able to secure copies of Galatea's other works, mostly thanks to Ezekiel Breckenridge. (We were told to destroy them immediately afterwords, but we're at least able to talk about them.) Read our week of Tributes!
