One of the things I've been reflecting on more and more is my personal growth in midlife and this stage in my life. I'm excited to introduce a new format for this episode, "Dear Lou", where I'll be sharing questions from listeners or readers of Midlife Cues, as well as my responses. I recently received an email from a listener about her sister, who recently retired and has started to become deeply involved in her grown children's lives, causing some family tension. In this episode, I'll share my response to "Concerned Sister" and my suggestions for how the family can address the underlying issue together. "An unexamined life is not worth living." The famous quote has been attributed to Socrates, the person that many believe valued the pursuit of wisdom more than anyone else in history.With this quote, Socrates implied that examining and understanding our lives is of utmost importance — essentially, for us to have the wisdom about ourselves and the life we choose to lead. Otherwise, we're merely existing, acting in ways the reasons for which are unknown to us. And yet, to examine our lives is to turn the lens on ourselves. And it's not easy to do in some respects. It's far easier to look away and never truly examine. But to make the effort to continuously examine our lives has many benefits — the best one being that we get to know ourselves really really well. And I think that's the ultimate best thing in life: To get to the end of the road and know that I've done the best I could to know myself and to master myself and to try to live the way I'd be proud to have lived.The easiest way to examine our lives, of course, is through journaling. I am so happy to welcome back Lou Blaser who is the editor of the Midlife Cues newsletter and the host of the podcast, Second Breaks. Lou wasn't always a podcast host or media maven… In fact, she used to hate the sound of her own voice, but when Lou asks the question, “What If?”, she has a tendency to follow the question with massive action that leads her to great things. It's been a windy path that's led her to hosting her podcast and writing her newsletter. It took some time for her to figure out the right path for her, but she figured out a way to channel her curiosity, her love of research, and her reading obsession into something that is helpful for other people and allows her the flexibility she needs to start a new GRAND adventure… which you'll hear all about in this episode.

Anyone with High Functioning Anxiety knows what I mean when I talk about the Swan Effect. It basically boils down to the feeling of being so on top of it and accomplishing everything we set our sights on… compared to the overwhelm and exhaustion that we feel under the surface that no one can see. My guest on this series about the performative nature of high functioning anxiety is no stranger to the Swan Effect. Well, we made it to 2021! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season. I know I’m excited to be back at the podcast after a short break. One of the most challenging aspects of High Functioning Anxiety is the Catch-22 of the positive affirmations you receive for being so on-it and accomplishing so much versus the overwhelm and exhaustion you feel under the surface. The future is hazy. It's unknowable. And that makes taking decisive action to build a stronger business much more challenging. But we have a choice. We can either fight it--and metaphorically try to shake that damn ball until we have a complete picture of what the future is going to be. Or we can make decisions based on the information we have, a solid understanding of our goals, and an acceptance of the uncertainty of it all. Waiting until you have all the answers you need or want is a great way to keep spinning your wheels. While embracing uncertainty might be risky and it's can definitely be scary, but it's the only way we move forward. This month, we looked at 3 different stories of embracing uncertainty. Lou Blaser told us how a big life change allowed her to look at her business in a new way and see how she could finally build the business she'd been dreaming about for years. Sarah Avenir shared how she leads herself and her team through uncertainty. And Cher Hale told us about getting clearer and clearer on her vision for life and business--and the big moves it required of her. We're rounding out this conversation about embracing uncertainty today by hearing from 4 more small business owners: Podge Thomas, Melissa Dinwiddie, Kat Lu, and Amy Feierman. We are all facing uncertainty--as we do every day. So I wanted to talk with business owners who have their own stories about embracing uncertainty this month and the first person I thought of was Lou Blaser, the founder & host of Second Breaks. I've watched Lou embrace uncertainty over and over again throughout the years. I've watched her step outside her comfort zone and I've watched her take courageous action. Earlier this year, she announced that she'd made the decision to upend her business, then a career coaching company for late Boomers and Gen Xers, and move back to the Philippines to help out with her aging m. And while she could have tried to continue with her business as is--she made the bold move to use the change as a way to rethink everything.
