In this inspiring conversation, Maesha (Co-founder of Green & Beyond Mag) chats with Marinel Sumook Ubaldo, a young Filipino climate activist who isn't afraid to speak up for the planet. She is one of the leading climate activists in Asia who also helped to organize the first-ever youth climate strike in her country, the Philippines. Marinel's life was just like a movie in a tropical paradise until her life suddenly changed forever when she had to witness the terrors of climate change firsthand in 2013, as Super Typhoon Haiyan wiped out her country, taking away lives of thousands and homes of millions of people. Disappointed at the crisis response from their government at the time, she decided to speak up and has since become one of the leading climate activists in the world. Today, she's an advocate for climate justice and environmental issues and also a registered social worker. Since her story has touched thousands of lives and inspired so many young people to speak up for our planet, today, in this inspirational conversation, we talk about Marinel's incredible journey, and her insights on how we can all maintain a positive mindset or practice climate optimism to move forward and keep taking meaningful actions. It is important to stay aware of the many diverse communities that make up our local, national, and global environments. This is increasingly becoming more important as travel is being enjoyed around the world by increasing numbers of people. Diversity, equity, inclusion and women are important aspects for travel and tourism industry leaders to consider if we want our industry talent pool to continue to innovate and grow. Travel is not just about visiting new places. It's also about creating a world in which we all can live and thrive. That's why the travel industry needs to be more inclusive.Christine's guest today travels the globe because she wants to continue to educate herself and be open to new cultures. She wants to continue challenging systems of oppression and spread the stories of people who are working for social justice. She's been apart of amazing projects, social changes beginning to happen, women creating powerful movements in their communities and she strives to have better conversations that move us forward on racial equity, gender equity, equal access for people with disabilities, fair wages and empowering people from historically marginalized communities to be able to independently travel in safety. Marinel de Jesus is the type of outdoors-person the world needs more of. As the founder of The Porter Voice Collective, Marinel advocates for porters' rights in top international trekking destinations including Peru and the Himalayas. She rallies for better working conditions, pay, and even food for the hard-working porters lugging our gear up the world's highest peaks – and after hearing her speak about the cause you'd be hard-pressed to not want to sign on. An avid trekker herself, Marinel and the crew dive into packing for treks, including what isn't necessary to bring along (key takeaway – keep it simple, stupid). They also discuss Marinel's other project, Equity Global Treks, which highlights long-distance jaunts led by women, for women. The trio also hit on what travelers can do to ensure that porters on their trip are treated fairly, and how to vet a tour company for proper treatment of staff. In Hot Takes, Tim ponders a digital nomad he met briefly at the Denver airport and wonders aloud if he's a stalker for continuing to follow this guy on social. An exploration of how climate change is impacting the sport we love and what others are individually doing to change it. This bonus episode is a collaboration with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), for World Humanitarian Day (WHD) 2021 to bring awareness to the critical conversations happening right now. First, through the storytelling of Fernanda Maciel on how she left her job as an environmental lawyer and now annually creates her “white flow” campaigns; a combination of incredible feats of running to drive awareness and enact change focused on environmental sustainability. Next, a discussion with Marinel Ubaldo, a climate justice activist from the Philippines who tells the story of how the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 impacted her community and the realities that global climate change is negatively impacting the world's most vulnerable communities. Then, we'll do a breakdown and call to action on how you can take immediate next steps on being an active participant in being a running climate activist. Today's devotional is shared by Marinel and Alona. Let's lean in as we continue to increase in the revelation of the eschatological plan of God and the good news of His Second Coming. Revelation 1:1-8 1 The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near. Greetings and Doxology 4 John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits[a] before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6 and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. 7 “Look, he is coming with the clouds,”[b] and “every eye will see him, even those who pierced him”; and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.”[c] So shall it be! Amen. 8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” [a] That is, the sevenfold Spirit [b] Daniel 7:13 [c] Zech. 12:10

Marinel de Jesus's story is a journey of discovery. A human struggle to find herself, freedom, and true happiness.Arriving in Seattle at the age of 13 yrs as part of an immigrant family from the Philippines, in the early years, of Marinel's life was about survival. Pushed on by the expectations of her family and particularly her mother, she struggled with feelings of inadequacy. Despite the significant achievement of becoming a practicing lawyer, deep down Marinel felt empty. She might have had the trappings of success, a home, a career, and money but in her own words, she thought she had 'lost a sense of herself'. There was an emotional turmoil and search for meaning enveloping her that wouldn't shift. When Marinel's mother died, it was the last day she was a lawyer. Her death was a catalyst for Marinel to embark on a journey to find herself and to "heal."Mountain trekking provided that healing. She discovered the freedom, love, and true happiness that had been missing from her life.Nature became Marinel's nurture. What started as a journey of discovery became a new life as she built her own trekking business and established a social mission to support indigenous women in the trekking industry. In Marinel's own words;"My dream didn't start until I looked inside."Marinel now runs a social enterprise trekking business, Peak Explorations, and leads a trekking community and social mission, based around her Brown Gal Trekker website. Her mission is to empower women and promote their presence in the trekking world. She is a writer and documentary maker and her new film called; We are Nomads - charts the story of the migration of women in the Altai mountain region of Mongolia.Listen and share your thoughts and observations about this episode and Marinel's journey at the Turning the Tables Community on Facebook. You can contact Marinel through Facebook or via the brown gal website.Episode credits;Editor and sound engineer: Tim White email: showupnow@gmail.comHost: Simon RatcliffeMusic:Broken Elegance -UnconditionallyScott Buckley - SnowfallAudionautix -Act Three
