Welcome to another episode of Hitting the Streets Podcast. Today on the show I have a returning guest, Melissa Cole. Please tune in to hear her exciting news about the Historical Marker for 1930 Sherman Riot. George Hughes was accused of raping a white woman at his employer's farm near Sherman. Hughes was later brought to the Sherman courthouse for trial when a mob gathered. May 9, 1930, George Hughes was lynched, the Grayson County Courthouse was burned to the ground, and the black business district on Mulberry Street was destroyed. Although this story happened a long time ago, racism still continues to affect us today.

Knowing why your beer tastes like it does is imperative, in all parts of the chain. In this podcast, part of our Digital Takeover on quality control and analysis, our contributing editor Melissa Cole chairs a panel discussion with figures from the brewing industry whose roles revolve around ensuring quality and extolling the virtues of this to the wider world. As SHE Compliance Manager at Beavertown Brewery, Jessica Maye looks after all things health & safety, food safety and environment & sustainability across their London sites.  Previously a quality & compliance manager at Fourpure, and a PhD candidate at Queen's University Belfast, Jessica's role at Beavertown Brewery as SHE Compliance Manager has allowed her to continue to develop and grow her expertise in Food Safety, in addition to responsibilities such as taking on artwork and label sign off. During this discussion she is joined by Tanya Kondratyuk, formerly quality manager at Leeds-based Northern Monk and also Amber Thorne. Having started her career in beer in the sales team at Siren Craft Brew, Amber has since moved to the iconic Bristol beer scene working with Good Chemistry and is now the Customer Account Manager at Arbor Ales. During this episode they discuss how best to ensure the flow of essential information travels from brewhouse, to quality assurance right through to taprooms and sales - and how that flow really needs to go both ways! As Melissa says, this way everyone feels empowered, every step of the way to offer valuable feedback and information.

I first became aware of Dog's Window thanks to beer writer Melissa Cole, who tweeted that it was producing some of best beer in South Wales. I contacted Lee the brewery owner (in fact the brewery everything... he's a one-man-team) and he kindly agreed to a visit, tour and interview. This is the kind of episode I started this podcast to make. Visiting, talking to, spreading the word of and supporting brilliant breweries here in Wales, specifically in my local area of South Wales. Lee is a hugely inspirational character and his beers are of the highest quality. And what's this thing about it being the best brewery in the world? Well, they do, in a very specific way, have a legitimate claim to that title. You'll have to listen to the end of the episode to find out how that works. Back to the beers - you have to try them. Go to dogswindowbrewery.com, buy some and feel good about the fact that not only will you have some lovely beers to drink... you'll also be supporting the vital grassroots of the brewing industry. I absolutely loved making this episode and hope to make many more like it highlighting other great local breweries.

We're back this week with the second part of my interview with beer writer, author, and judge Melissa Cole. Since we last heard from Melissa, I actually had the chance to have beers in person with her in Minneapolis during the Craft Brewers Conference. Along with Melissa, my Beer Edge partner John Holl and a couple of Australian beer writers hit several dive bars in Northeast Minneapolis before singing our hearts out at 1 am karaoke. As I said in the last episode, it's never a dull day with Melissa Cole. And the second half of this interview is also unlikely to bore you. In fact, Melissa delivers a devastating indictment of BrewDog amidst all the scandals swirling around the company. These controversies, which seem to multiply week after week, involve a host of issues including allegations of an abusive and harmful corporate culture, poor treatment of workers, surveillance of employees and critics, and mistreatment of females. It can be difficult to get your arms around the issues facing BrewDog as they seem to pile on more as time goes on. For this week, we continue our chat with Melissa, who has covered BrewDog for more than a decade. And we start at the beginning, including her first memories of meeting BrewDog's co-founder James Watt and how her impressions of him and the company evolved over time. A word of warning for listeners. We discuss some sensitive issues in this episode, including physical abuse, harassment, and sexism. It's never boring with Melissa Cole. The first time we met remains a bit of a fever dream for me. We get into it in the first few minutes of this interview and, in character, Melissa manages to recall micro details of what we ate and drank that night six years ago. Melissa's work is similarly colorful and a bit hard to characterize. She appears to have transcended the role of journalist and become somewhat of a presenter, as the Brits might say. She's an accomplished author of several excellent books, a brewer of many collaboration beers, a widely respected international judge of beers, a frequent television guest offering both piercing and critical social commentary, related to beer, but also an accomplished speaker about food and tasting. Melissa is also a powerful advocate for classic styles, British beer excellence, but most importantly, for equality and calling out bad behavior by boorish breweries. Recently, she has been in the media quite a bit for her continuing criticism of BrewDog and its corporate culture and its treatment of workers and females. We'll get into this subject in detail in the second part of our conversation next week. But for this week, we discuss Melissa's background, her books, and her secrets to pairing beer and food. We conducted this interview via Zoom and I spent most of the session with a huge smile on my face or laughing. Next week's episode concluding our interview with Melissa will be a bit more serious. But for this week, let's get to the first half of my conversation with the indefatigable Melissa Cole.  For more information on the Beer Edge Podcast, follow us on Twitter @thebeeredge. Michelle Hadaway, whose daughter Karen was one of the girls murdered in the Babes in the Wood case, tells us about her dealings with Martin Bashir. In 1991, he approached her asking for her daughter's clothes so he could send them for DNA testing. She still hasn't got those clothes back. He says he can't remember the exchange. Michelle describes her feelings in light of the Dyson investigation. Should the mass destruction of nature, also known as ecocide, be a crime? At the moment there are four crimes covered by the International Criminal Court - genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression. Now campaigners are pushing to have ecocide added to the list. Jojo Mehta, the co-founder of Stop Ecocide International joins Emma to talk about the campaign and how the work of the late Polly Higgins put ecocide on the map. Philippe Sands, a barrister and expert in international law, talks about the practical difficulties of writing a new law, getting countries to sign up, and where to draw the line between using nature as a means of living, and perpetrating a crime against the planet. Seven years ago “Eva Carter” saved her partner's life. She tells Emma how the experience of that night and her feelings at the time and afterwards fed into her novel How To Save A Life. The novel is written under the pen name Eva Carter to protect her partner's privacy. In the book 17 year old Kerry saves the life of Joel the school heart-throb and football hero when she performs CPR on him on the football field after he collapses. Her friend Tim freezes and is unable help for 20 minutes as Kerry works away - he then steps in to help and ends up being credited as a hero... that night shapes the lives of all three of them... In recent days there has been a huge outpouring on social media of women sharing their experiences of sexism working in the craft beer industry. These include female brewers being deliberately humiliated by male superiors, sales women being sexually harassed and some serious allegations of sexual assault and unwanted attention from prominent men in the industry. Heads have already begun to roll in the US, there have also been accusations made of companies and individuals here in the UK, and an online conference is going to be held next month to discuss how women can organise themselves and get more support. Emma is joined by Charlotte Cook, head brewer at Coalition Brewing and Melissa Cole, beer writer and author of The Little Book of Craft Beer.

It's another week, another journey around Jupiter, another wax and wane of Europa, our favourite moon. This intergalactic road trip also provides human beings of Earth with another incredible episode of the TickyOff podcast. This week James has been roped into cooking bread with a bunch of children, only one of whom is related to him. Sam is ratty about a long, and to be fair somewhat dull, chat about the colour pink in restaurants. They discuss flashing, ‘Grief Is The Thing With Feathers', noodles and ‘Us'. Then beer expert and writer Melissa Cole shows up with a cool box full of beer and things improve no end. Melissa rains down chat-honesty like a cloud bank of verbal truth has just blown in from the West…or something. She tells all about the grim idiocy of (some) in the craft beer world, changing demographics in beer drinking and drops more science than has ever been heard around these here TickyOff parts. There's also time for nursery rhymes, the difficulties of recording the sounds of a live hawk, tarot cards and mediums, and Melissa explains the benefits of Sam turning his back on his beloved Budweiser… This week's episode is sponsored by the entirely hairless, three fingered, web footed wine experts at Dropwine.co.uk

Welcome to episode eight of the Honest Mamas Podcast! Today, we speak to Melissa Cole about how she became a lactation consultant, the shock mothers have when they find out how difficult breastfeeding can be, and discuss some common myths about breastfeeding. Melissa has been passionate about providing feeding support since 2002. Melissa believes it is a great honor to provide nurturing, quality care to families as they work towards their feeding goals. In addition to comprehensive lactation support, Melissa also works with families coping with unique feeding concerns impacted by prematurity, food allergies, lip/tongue tie concerns, oral motor dysfunction, complex feeding issues, low milk supply, and beyond. Read more about Melissa Cole, founder of Luna Lactation. Luna Lactation provides comprehensive support to families coping with feeding concerns. Our practice is a micro-practice. A micro-practice is a healthcare model in which a solo provider can focus on individualized, client-centered care since they keep their practice small. We only see one family at a time in an unhurried environment. Being a micro-practice allows us to provide continuity and high-quality, efficient care. Clients appreciate the ease of access they have when they need to reach the lactation consultant whenever questions or concerns arise. At Luna Lactation, we understand that feeding challenges are emotional and don’t always happen Mon-Fri 9-5! Prompt, personalized, mindful care is our goal and we hope you’ll appreciate the benefits of our micro-practice too!   What you’ll hear in this episode   How Melissa became a lactation consultant The shock mothers have when they find out how difficult breastfeeding can be How often Melissa sees breastfeeding not working for mothers The major emotional impacts that can happen to mothers Dealing with the grief of not being able to breastfeed Ways relationships around a mother can be impacted from breastfeeding How and why breast is not always best How anxiety and postpartum depression can affect breastfeeding   Resources http://www.lunalactation.com http://www.llli.org
