Welcome to season 2 of Church Chat, the show that has the conversations about ministry you wish you were having. Today we're talking to Jeff Martin, Lead Pastor of Rock Creek Church, about the difference between relational and organizational problems, making big changes the simple way, ministering in a transient community, being a flexible leader, what the world needs in a hyper partisan environment, how to combat the one-way sermon, being a majority leader in a diverse community, attracting the younger generation, developing a replace yourself mentality and more! Jeff Martin grew up in northern New Jersey and attended Miami University (OH) where God changed his life's ambitions through the ministry of Cru. He joined Cru staff where he met Mary, and they served for 23 years together. Seven of those years were spent in Bulgaria helping to launch collegiate ministries. Back in the States, Jeff served as the Regional Director for Cru in the Mid-Atlantic. In addition to his RD role, Jeff had the privilege of training hundreds of Cru staff members in Christ-centered preaching, through the Institute for Biblical Studies. Jeff has an MDIV from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Since 2013, Jeff has served as the Lead Pastor of Rock Creek Church in Rockville, Maryland. His love for ministry leaders has recently led him to pursue certification with the Society of Church Consultants. In July of 2024, he launched JTM Ministry Coaching with the vision of helping leaders build healthy, gospel-centered ministries. Jeff loves sports, intense conversations, making people laugh, and creating boating videos on his YouTube channel. He and Mary have been married for 33 years and have two daughters, two sons-in-law, one son, and one grandson. They currently reside in Olney, Maryland. In this episode, Lisa and Jessica discuss:The three types of college support services for neurodiverse students.Recognizing what support services your student used in high school including invisible supports they may need to be successful. How to assess the quality of disability services at colleges.Preparing your neurodiverse teen for independence and self-advocacy.Key Takeaways: Learning differences, from dyscalculia to autism to ADHD and so many more, are on a wide spectrum, and each student has different needs. You will want to identify what was most important for your student's success. The invisible support structures are those not on an IEP. They may look like medication support, parent monitoring of school work, or even waking your student in the morning. It is a team approach to support your student in high school with written and invisible structures. It should also be a team approach to understanding what is key to your student's success going into college.By ADA regulations, all colleges that receive federal financial aid must provide basic support. But if your student needs more coordinated or structured support, you will want to seek that out during the college search process. The admissions office does not speak with the accessibility office - you and your student should speak to those support offices directly. “You have to understand that that IEP does not go to college, so it will not look the same. High schools have to ensure success. Colleges only have to ensure access.” – Jessica NelsonAbout Jessica Nelson: Although Jessica didn't initially set out to work in college admissions after earning her B.A. in Speech Communications from Miami University (OH) and M.A. in Interpersonal Communication from the University of Iowa, a temporary position as an admissions counselor at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL, turned into a career spanning over 16 years in college admissions and college counseling, including a stint as an application reader at Georgia Tech.Over the years, Jessica has become a trusted expert working with students with learning differences and helping them find colleges where they can thrive. Jessica is currently a college counselor with Collegewise, one of the largest private counseling companies in the United States. Collegewise's 70 admissions experts help students identify the best possible school they can flourish in while also bringing a sense of calm and joy to the college application process. When not working with students, Jessica lives in southern Vermont with her spouse, two kids, two cats, and a flock of backyard chickens.Episode References:Resource Library: https://collegewise.com/resources Wiser Notes: The Collegewise Blog: https://go.collegewise.com/ Upcoming Collegewise Webinars & Seminars: https://collegewise.com/seminars #47 The Neurodivergent College-Bound Journey with Eric EndlichGet Lisa's Free on-demand video: How-to guide for your teen to choose the right major, college, & career...(without painting themselves into a corner, missing crucial deadlines, or risking choices you both regret). flourishcoachingco.com/video Connect with Jessica:Website: collegewise.com/ Connect with Lisa:Website: https://www.flourishcoachingco.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@flourishcoachingcoInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/flourishcoachingco/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/flourish-coaching-co

Episode 97 - Ben Hartings is an owner/partner at Trinity Financial Advisors in Columbus, Ohio. He was raised on a poultry farm, played division one football at Miami University (OH), and received his MBA from the University of Dayton. Ben is a two-time cancer survivor and the author of two books on dealing with loss and grief. He is involved in various Catholic ministries and outreach boards, and he and his wife of 18 years have five children, four living and one in heaven.Chad pops the cork on, and proposes a toast to, the rich flavor of paradox on this episode, as Ben (no stranger to 'uncorking') adds his own touch to the conversation as co-host. The two try to claim this guest for their respective side of the confessional divide while listening to his insights into two seemingly unrelated topics. What is the "Scarcity Mindset" and how does it fit within a Christian context? Why would someone "offer" their suffering as a form of obedient surrender to God's will? How does Ben H's story serve as an example for bringing these two topics together? Recently released 2023 figures on enrollment trends in the U.S. show an interesting picture of how higher ed looks coming out of the pandemic. But how that stabilization is being realized is a complex combination of trends and sub-trends that we can document but not really explain. In this episode I'll explore what the latest data suggest. And I'll look at how the data look through the lens of student engagement, leaning on the insights of Dr. Jenny Darroch from Miami University (OH). What can we blame on COVID, and what can we blame on ourselves? Check it out. EdUp Insights with Bill Pepicello is part of the EdUp Experience Podcast Network.

Available IPEDS data from 2020 shows the salaries for full-time female faculty members are about 81.2% of their male counterparts. Impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic continue to impact women faculty members disproportionately more than their counterparts. In this segment of his clinic talk at the Illinois HS Football Coaches Association Clinic, Chuck Martin, Head Coach, Miami (OH)explains how they utilize a 1-high structure to Defend the RPO. They take the approach that they will make an offense 1 dimensional while taking away conflict from their own defenders. For them it's about keeping their best linebackers in the box and not allowing the offense to dictate and make them apex players who have to get on the edge and tackle in space. Coach points out that they know what their kids are good at and they ask them to do those things. Their 1 high system is simple and gives them the advantage in getting aligned quickly. Coach shares more on the benefits of their system and examples of their success. Todays guest, willing to spends some time with us Joining up dots, first began his working life as a sales professional in the technology industry after graduating from Miami University (OH) with a degree in Marketing and Entrepreneurship. And as he says in his own words "It didn't take long for me to notice and experience first hand the friction between generations in the workplace." The guys that were happy to come to work everyday and do their stuff, because quite simply that is what they had always done. And then the younger group. The next generation who thought and acted differently due to their belief that life should be different to that of their parents. In fact it's not so much as a belief, but is a firm expectation that things are going to move on, and they will be at the forefront of that movement. So to better understand this workplace issue, our guest began researching, collaborating with industry experts, and interviewing 100s of Millennials to better understand their behavior, strengths, employer expectations, and career desires. Which lead to him to write the book, “The GenEdge: Leveraging Millennials With A Next Generation Mindset,” which empowers leaders to think differently about the emerging generation in order to capitalize on their size and unique skills. Now he shares his insights from the stage where he has spoken alongside fellow thought leaders from iconic brands like MTV, Facebook, and Uber for the last 7+ years. He also shares his insights as a contributor for many different platforms, not least his own podcast. Is there anyone who hasn't got one of these? So why was he so attuned to the friction that occurs within todays workplace, as isn't it just a sample of what life is like anyway nowadays? And does he see this friction as a great thing that will speed us on to greater and greater endeavours, or just keep the brakes squealing away as we try to move forward? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots, with the one and only Mr Ryan Jenkins
