This is: AE Studio @ SXSW: We need more AI consciousness research (and further resources), published by AE Studio on March 27, 2024 on LessWrong. Quick update from AE Studio: last week, Judd (AE's CEO) hosted a panel at SXSW with Anil Seth, Allison Duettmann, and Michael Graziano, entitled "The Path to Conscious AI" (discussion summary here[1]). We're also making available an unedited Otter transcript/recording for those who might want to read along or increase the speed of the playback. Why AI consciousness research seems critical to us With the release of each new frontier model seems to follow a cascade of questions probing whether or not the model is conscious in training and/or deployment. We suspect that these questions will only grow in number and volume as these models exhibit increasingly sophisticated cognition. If consciousness is indeed sufficient for moral patienthood, then the stakes seem remarkably high from a utilitarian perspective that we do not commit the Type II error of behaving as if these and future systems are not conscious in a world where they are in fact conscious. Because the ground truth here (i.e., how consciousness works mechanistically) is still poorly understood, it is extremely challenging to reliably estimate the probability that we are in any of the four quadrants above - which seems to us like a very alarming status quo. Different people have different default intuitions about this question, but the stakes here seem too high for default intuitions to be governing our collective behavior. In an ideal world, we'd have understood far more about consciousness and human cognition before getting near AGI. For this reason, we suspect that there is likely substantial work that ought to be done at a smaller scale first to better understand consciousness and its implications for alignment. Doing this work now seems far preferable to a counterfactual world where we build frontier models that end up being conscious while we still lack a reasonable model for the correlates or implications of building sentient AI systems. Accordingly, we are genuinely excited about rollouts of consciousness evals at large labs, though the earlier caveat still applies: our currently-limited understanding of how consciousness actually works may engender a (potentially dangerous) false sense of confidence in these metrics. Additionally, we believe testing and developing an empirical model of consciousness will enable us to better understand humans, our values, and any future conscious models. We also suspect that consciousness may be an essential cognitive component of human prosociality and may have additional broader implications for solutions to alignment. To this end, we are currently collaborating with panelist Michael Graziano in pursuing a more mechanistic model of consciousness by operationalizing attention schema theory. Ultimately, we believe that immediately devoting time, resources, and attention towards better understanding the computational underpinnings of consciousness may be one of the most important neglected approaches that can be pursued in the short term. Better models of consciousness could likely (1) cause us to dramatically reconsider how we interact with and deploy our current AI systems, and (2) yield insights related to prosociality/human values that lead to promising novel alignment directions. Resources related to AI consciousness Of course, this is but a small part of a larger, accelerating conversation that has been ongoing on LW and the EAF for some time. We thought it might be useful to aggregate some of the articles we've been reading here, including panelists Michael Graziano's book, " Rethinking Consciousness" (and article, Without Consciousness, AIs Will Be Sociopaths) as well as Anil Seth's book, " Being You". Naturally, this is precisely what Michael and Robinson discuss in this episode. More particularly, they get into the philosophical question of what consciousness is, the roles of philosophy and science in answering the same, and whether or not there are deep, intractable issues here. Then they turn to Michael's theory of consciousness—the Attention Schema Theory—in which consciousness is a way in which the brain models attention to better organize and monitor it. We have a new podcast! It's called Universe Of Art, and it's all about artists who use science to bring their creations to the next level. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Astronomers Spy A Two-Faced Star This week, astronomers report in the journal Nature that they've discovered a white dwarf—a dying star's dense inner core—that, instead of being uniform in composition, has a surface that appears to be hydrogen on one face and helium on the other. The star rotates on its axis once every 15 minutes, bringing each face into view. Researchers spotted the unusual object with an instrument called the Zwicky Transient Facility, which initially singled out the star because of its rapidly changing brightness. The astronomers aren't sure why the white dwarf, which they've nicknamed Janus after the two-faced Roman god, has this strange divided surface. Some possible theories include shifting magnetic fields which produce areas of different density, or that it's a step in stellar evolution only partially complete. Tim Revell, deputy US editor at New Scientist, joins John Dankosky to talk about the two-faced star and other stories from the week in science, including the resignation of the Stanford University president amidst an ethics probe, discovery of ancient natural graphene, an earthworm invasion in the Arctic, and investigations of alcoholic fruit. How Does The Brain Control Your Every Move? As you read this, every small action your body makes—eyes scanning the page, fingers scrolling a mouse, scratching an itch on your face—must be dictated by your brain. These actions usually happen without a second thought. But inside the brain, the motor cortex is hard at work making the body move. For nearly a century, every neuroscience student came across the “homunculus”—a visual representation of which areas of the brain control certain body parts. But for the last few decades, some researchers have disputed this traditional view of brain mapping. This includes a recent study, led by Washington University in St. Louis. Joining guest host John Dankosky to discuss how the brain and body are connected are study lead author Evan Gordon, assistant professor of radiology at Wash U., and Michael Graziano, professor of psychology and neuroscience at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute in Princeton, New Jersey. Does computational irreducibility have practical implications for the difficulty of solving this complex biological problem? Also, do you ever get sad about the shortness of the current human lifespan causing us to miss out on the (potentially unimaginable) future opportunities for understanding the universe? - Do you think a multi-computational approach to medicine will detect disease first by observing visual systems or chemical systems or otherwise? - Is this discussion of mortality curves related to the survivorship function? - Would there be any justification for pursuing eternal life for humans, if feasible? - Aging might be the condition that makes the most sense to study economically, in terms of the money spent by health systems on related problems overall. - According to Michael Graziano, immortality will be achieved by uploading human consciousness into computers. - The discussion today reminded me of this post I saw where it asked if you could live for 150 years but you had to upload your brain to the metaverse and give up your real body, would you? - Would you upload your brain? - Yes, but uploading a copy of your brain into a computer means there are two of you, and computational irreducibility means that the two are different from each other! - Is bureaucratic inefficiency analogous to aging in biological systems? That the system over time grinds to a halt and dies due to build up of systematic inefficiencies? Can we apply life extension to institutions?

#consciousness #awareness #AST #neurosceince #michaelgraziano Michael Graziano is an Author, scientist, professor of psychology, and neuroscience at Princeton University, his lab/research focuses on the brain basis of consciousness. The attention schema theory of consciousness proposes that an attention schema is like the ‘body schema'. Just like the brain constructs a simplified model of the body to help monitor and control movements of the body, so the brain constructs a simplified model of attention to help monitor and control attention. Information in that model, portraying an imperfect and simplified version of attention, leads the brain to conclude that it has a non-physical essence of awareness. He Posits Consciousness is informational & mechanistic in nature and not magical or mysterious, in theory when we have the technology to scan/upload our cognitive data onto a computer/avataar/robot/machine we will be able to transfer consciousness too. https://grazianolab.princeton.edu/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-graziano-0490188a links https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attention_schema_theory https://youtu.be/2DWnvx1NYUA https://youtu.be/q_TyuQU7epQ https://youtu.be/CgFzmE2fGXA https://youtu.be/YWQnzylhgHc Watch our highest viewed videos: 1-India;s 1st Quantum Computer- https://youtu.be/ldKFbHb8nvQDR R VIJAYARAGHAVAN - PROF & PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR AT TIFR 2-Breakthrough in Age Reversal- -https://youtu.be/214jry8z3d4DR HAROLD KATCHER - CTO NUGENICS RESEARCH 3-Head of Artificial Intelligence-JIO - https://youtu.be/q2yR14rkmZQShailesh Kumar 4-STARTUP FROM INDIA AIMING FOR LEVEL 5 AUTONOMY - SANJEEV SHARMA CEO SWAAYATT ROBOTS -https://youtu.be/Wg7SqmIsSew 5-TRANSHUMANISM & THE FUTURE OF MANKIND - NATASHA VITA-MORE: HUMANITY PLUS -https://youtu.be/OUIJawwR4PY 6-MAN BEHIND GOOGLE QUANTUM SUPREMACY - JOHN MARTINIS -https://youtu.be/Y6ZaeNlVRsE 7-1000 KM RANGE ELECTRIC VEHICLES WITH ALUMINUM AIR FUEL BATTERIES - AKSHAY SINGHAL -https://youtu.be/cUp68Zt6yTI 8-Garima Bharadwaj Chief Strategist IoT & AI at Enlite Research -https://youtu.be/efu3zIhRxEY 9-BANKING 4.0 - BRETT KING FUTURIST, BESTSELLING AUTHOR & FOUNDER MOVEN -https://youtu.be/2bxHAai0UG0 10-E-VTOL & HYPERLOOP- FUTURE OF INDIA"S MOBILITY- SATYANARAYANA CHAKRAVARTHY -https://youtu.be/ZiK0EAelFYY 11-NON-INVASIVE BRAIN COMPUTER INTERFACE - KRISHNAN THYAGARAJAN -https://youtu.be/fFsGkyW3xc4 12-SATELLITES THE NEW MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR SPACE RACE - MAHESH MURTHY -https://youtu.be/UarOYOLUMGk Connect & Follow us at: https://in.linkedin.com/in/eddieavil https://in.linkedin.com/company/change-transform-india https://www.facebook.com/changetransformindia/ https://twitter.com/intothechange https://www.instagram.com/changetransformindia/ Listen to the Audio Podcast at: https://anchor.fm/transform-impossible https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/change-i-m-possibleid1497201007?uo=4 https://open.spotify.com/show/56IZXdzH7M0OZUIZDb5mUZ https://www.breaker.audio/change-i-m-possible https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8xMjg4YzRmMC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw Kindly Subscribe to CHANGE- I M POSSIBLE - youtube channel www.youtube.com/ctipodcast

Michael Graziano's intriguing book fuses two landmark titles in American history: Perry Miller's Errand into the Wilderness (1956), about the religious worldview of the early Massachusetts colonists, and David Martin's Wilderness of Mirrors (1980), about the dangers and delusions inherent to the Central Intelligence Agency. Fittingly, Errand Into the Wilderness of Mirrors: Religion and the History of the CIA (U Chicago Press, 2021) investigates the dangers and delusions that ensued from the religious worldview of the early molders of the Central Intelligence Agency. Graziano argues that the religious approach to intelligence by key OSS and CIA figures like “Wild” Bill Donovan and Edward Lansdale was an essential, and overlooked, factor in establishing the agency's concerns, methods, and understandings of the world. In a practical sense, this was because the Roman Catholic Church already had global networks of people and safe places that American agents could use to their advantage. But more tellingly, Graziano shows, American intelligence officers were overly inclined to view powerful religions and religious figures through the frameworks of Catholicism. As Graziano makes clear, these misconceptions often led to tragedy and disaster on an international scale. By braiding the development of the modern intelligence agency with the story of postwar American religion, Errand into the Wilderness of Mirrors delivers a provocative new look at a secret driver of one of the major engines of American power. Allison Isidore is the Assistant Director for the American Catholic Historical Association and is an Instructor of Record for the Religious Studies department at the University of Alabama. Brains arrive at the conclusion that they have an internal, subjective experience of things — an experience that is non-physical and inexplicable. How can such a thing be studied scientifically? That is just part of the mission behind Michael Graziano's lab. He is a professor of neuroscience and psychology at Princeton University, and the author of  “The Intelligent Movement Machine: An Ethological Perspective on the Primate Motor System”, “God Soul Mind Brain: A Neuroscientist's Reflections on the Spirit World”, and “Rethinking Consciousness: A Scientific Theory of Subjective Experience”, to name a few. Michael and Greg dive into consciousness, what we mean when we talk about schemas, how we inhabit our bodies, and the sophisticated attention that makes humans what we are. Episode Quotes:Theory of preserving bodies in the future:[00:59:41] It is kind of assumed in the futurism world, assumed that technology is forever and the human body is fragile. And so what you want to do is upload yourself into a machine or put your body into a robot and then you'll live forever or whatever the fantasy is. It is true that the exact opposite is what actually happens. That a human body, if taken care of properly lives 90 to 100 years. And your typical machine lasts 10 years. So actually the approach to technology would have to change also. If you want this kind of longevity that people are looking for. Because the machine world is actually not a long lived world. Machines break a lot faster than biological bodies break, at least right now they do.Question of consciousness:[00:49:19] I think I'm a little unusual. Because most people think the question of consciousness is a question of philosophy. And it is that partly. I think it's a question of technology and the immediate near term future of technology. That's what the question of consciousness really is right now. Humans & theory of mind:[00:36:16] There are different views on this, here's what I think. Humans are hyper social. Our success as a species, our world dominance, rests entirely on our amazing, intuitive ability to guess what someone else is thinking. So theory of mind or building models of other people's minds. Without that, we're nothing, we're just separate animals. With that, we're civilization. How the brain constructs models:[00:30:45] The brain constructs models that are useful. It does not construct models that are literally accurate. Like that's not the point. Evolution does not give us models that are literally accurate to edify us with scientific accuracy, no. Evolution shapes, models that are useful.Show Links:Guest Profile:Faculty Profile at Princeton Neuroscience InstituteMichael Graziano on LinkedinMichael Graziano on TEDxCornellUniversityHis work:Graziano LabRethinking Consciousness: A Scientific Theory of Subjective Experience The Spaces Between Us: A Story of Neuroscience, Evolution, and Human NatureConsciousness and the Social BrainDeath My Own WayGod Soul Mind Brain: A Neuroscientist's Reflections on the Spirit WorldThe Divine FarceThe Love Song of MonkeyThe Intelligent Movement Machine: An Ethological Perspective on the Primate Motor SystemThe Last Notebook of Leonardo (LeapKids)Squiggle (LeapKids)Billy and the Birdfrogs

What role has religion played in the CIA's missions around the world? Dr. Michael Graziano, author of Errand into the Wilderness of Mirrors: Religion and the History of the CIA, joins us to share captivating stories about religion in America's Central Intelligence Agency. We explore how the CIA set out to understand religious traditions across the globe in their fight against Soviet communism, what happened when the CIA profoundly misunderstood how religion functions throughout the world, and how the CIA's ideas about Islam have changed in the 21st century.

I sat down with Michael Graziano to talk about his book Errand into the Wilderness of Mirrors which investigates the dangers and delusions that ensued from the religious world-views of the early moulders of the CIA. We discuss how the religious studies of the time (both in the academy and in popular culture) shaped the CIA's view of and approach to religion - particularly the developing World Religions Paradigm. Along the way we discuss American exceptionalism, shifting attitudes to Catholicism, and the strongly held belief within the CIA that a religious person would always, ultimately, side with the good ol' USofA. Buy the bookMichael Graziano is Assistant Professor of Religion at the University of Northern Iowa. His research focuses on the relationship between religion, law, and government in the United States. In particular, how the U.S. government decides what counts as “religious,” and how it chooses to engage religious people, ideas, and institutions. Today our guest is Michael Graziano, author of Rethinking Consciousness: A Scientific Theory Of Subjective Experience, Published in September by Norton. Michael is professor of psychology and neuroscience at Princeton. He has written four other neuroscience books and his work has appeared in The Atlantic, NYT, Huffington Post and many other periodicals. His lab at Princeton focuses on a theory, a theory labelled The Attention Schema. Rethinking Conscious explores the world in which we live and how that world is represented in our mind. It is not only the perception of reality but our perception of that perception that drives the experience which we call consciousness. Neurons fire, the ones that fire like warriors drive our attention and thus give rise to the idea that we exist and that we are paying attention to something or other.

His scientific research focuses on the brain basis of awareness. He has proposed the "attention schema" theory, an explanation of how, and for what adaptive advantage, brains attribute the property of awareness to themselves. His previous work focused on how the cerebral cortex monitors the space around the body and controls movement within that space. Notably he has suggested that the classical map of the body in motor cortex, the homunculus, is not correct and is better described as a map of complex actions that make up the behavioral repertoire. He's also the author of 13 books, including Consciousness and the Social Brain (2013), and The Spaces Between Us: A Story of Neuroscience, Evolution, and Human Nature (2018). In this episode, we focus our conversation on the topic of consciousness. Basically, what is consciousness, from a scientific perspective, and its relationship to other cognitive components of our brains. Also, the interplay between attention, awareness, and consciousness. The evolutionary relevance of consciousness for social species, and theory of mind. How we can tackle the hard problem of consciousness. “Illusionism”, or consciousness as an illusion of the mind. And, finally, we address the current limitations in studying consciousness in other animals; if we are close to create conscious AI; and also António Damásio's proposal to the wat consciousness is build up from lower-order neurological processes. I first met Michael Graziano at Flight Centre Canada's head office in Vancouver, BC (my former place of employment). For three years we sponsored his show, Global Degree, simply because it was one of the most inspiring and entertaining initiatives we'd seen in a long time. What is a Global Degree? The concept of the show is both simple and outrageously ambitious - Michael is on a mission to travel to every country in the world. His drive to achieve this goal is rooted in his desire to improve the post-secondary education experience, hence the name Global Degree. He has already made his way to 106 countries, capturing the excitement, and most importantly, the enlightenment that travel brings each of its pursuers. I've watched him tear down walls of ignorance, find friends in the unlikeliest of places and fearlessly cross borders some of us wouldn't even dream of approaching. If that isn't impressive enough, Global Degree has managed to build a social media community of more than 1,000,000 followers, and their videos have a collective view count of over 70 million. More Than a Milestone He is also no stranger to public speaking, with international engagements under his belt that include the impressive Hostelworld Conference held in Dublin, Ireland in 2015. His ability to unforgivingly forgo society's standards for an acceptable career path is resulting in an upgrade that our outdated education system desperately needs. His mission is not only share-worthy, it's revolutionary for today's youth.      The Global Degree Academy Michael Graziano's influence extends far outside the realm of social media. He bravely took on a project most would have written off as an impossible feat and built the Global Degree Academy, making it feasible for anyone to earn a post-secondary education while traveling to every country in the world. Don't believe me? I'll leave it to Michael to explain...    Michael Graziano's Book Recommendations Factfulness: Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the World -- and Why Things Are Better Than You Think by Hans Rosling Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D.
