The concept of a schema goes back at least to the philosopher Immanuel Kant in the 1700s, who use the term to refer to a kind of built-in mental framework to organize sensory experience. But it was the psychologist Frederic Bartlett in the 1930s who used the term schema in a psychological sense, to explain how our memories are organized and how new information gets integrated into our memory. Fast forward another 100 years to today, and we have a podcast episode with my guest today, Alison Preston, who runs the Preston Lab at the University of Texas at Austin. On this episode, we discuss her neuroscience research explaining how our brains might carry out the processing that fits with our modern conception of schemas, and how our brains do that in different ways as we develop from childhood to adulthood. I just said, "our modern conception of schemas," but like everything else, there isn't complete consensus among scientists exactly how to define schema. Ali has her own definition. She shares that, and how it differs from other conceptions commonly used. I like Ali's version and think it should be adopted, in part because it helps distinguish schemas from a related term, cognitive maps, which we've discussed aplenty on brain inspired, and can sometimes be used interchangeably with schemas. So we discuss how to think about schemas versus cognitive maps, versus concepts, versus semantic information, and so on. Last episode Ciara Greene discussed schemas and how they underlie our memories, and learning, and predictions, and how they can lead to inaccurate memories and predictions. Today Ali explains how circuits in the brain might adaptively underlie this process as we develop, and how to go about measuring it in the first place. Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well

What is the recipe for developing deeper, more intimate relationships?  Breaking this all down in his new book, The Mindful Path to Intimacy, is couples therapist Dr. James Cordova, who talks to Yael about how true intimacy happens when vulnerability is met with warmth and acceptance and feeling safe being your real self with someone.  You'll hear some eye-opening research, including his “relationship checkup” method and how marriage therapy has evolved to focus on both behavior and acceptance.  If you are looking for ways to strengthen your relationship emotionally and physically—such as staying mindful, paying attention to one another, sexual intimacy, and making check-ins a regular habit—James has some extremely practical suggestions for you! Listen and Learn:  The true meaning of intimacy Balancing change and acceptance in relationships How can we stay open and kind when we hear something we don't want to? How mindfulness can transform intimacy The power of vulnerability and compassion in the face of conflict and how understanding your partner leads to a deeper connection Why our ancient instincts for self-protection clash with modern relationship needs How relational flexibility can transform your relationships How do daily hurts and unaddressed issues lead to distance in your relationship? Curse or Schema? Either way, in this episode I'm talking about overcoming inherited traumas. What is a generational curse? And are you plagued with it? We look closley at the negative behavior patterns passed down through families. These patterns, often referred to as 'isms' such as alcoholism, gambling, abuse, and mental illness, can have severe impacts on various life aspects including health, relationships, and finances. Let's look at generational curses through the lens of modern psychology. Are what we refer to as ‘curses' really DNA-encoded or learned behavior patterns known as schemas?  This episode highlights the difficulties and immense effort required to break these curses or cycles, particularly for those in toxic environments. We look at the role that self-awareness plays in emotional resilience, and setting boundaries. The discussion also covers the specific schemas developed by family members of narcissists and also those of narcissists themselves. Ways of overcoming these deeply ingrained patterns are explored in our efforts to break the ‘generaltional curse'. 00:00 Introduction to Generational Curses 00:24 Understanding Isms and Their Impact 01:22 Modern Psychology's Take on Generational Curses 01:53 The Role of DNA and Learned Experiences 02:35 Schemas: The Building Blocks of Behavior 06:08 Breaking Free from Generational Curses 06:35 Narcissism and Its Schemas 09:33 The Black Sheep's Role in Breaking Curses 14:00 Subjugation Schema in Narcissistic Families 23:33 Emotional Inhibition Schema 28:21 Steps to Break the Cycle 35:14 Challenges in Breaking the Curse 37:46 Embracing Self-Compassion and Self-Care 40:05 Understanding Narcissistic Dynamics 42:14 The Role of the Black Sheep 44:02 Schemas and Their Impact 47:08 Subjugation Schema Explained 51:40 Mistrust Schema and Its Effects 57:37 Emotional Inhibition Schema 01:02:35 Breaking the Cycle of Generational Curses 35:14 Challenges and Resistance

Hi, Do you have a question for us? Ask away! This episode will resonate with anyone struggling with an overdeveloped sense of responsibility to others and those who feel “stuck” in cycles of overgiving. In this solo episode, Gemma dives deep into the self-sacrifice schema, exploring how it manifests, its origins in family dynamics, and the toll it takes on those who constantly prioritize others over themselves. This schema, often seen in people who struggle with setting boundaries, can lead to burnout, resentment, and a diminished sense of self-worth.Gemma delves into the drama triangle—the roles of victim, rescuer, and persecutor—and explains how these dynamics often shape and reinforce the self-sacrifice schema. Additionally, she examines the enmeshment schema, which often appears alongside self-sacrifice, further complicating one's ability to differentiate personal needs from the needs of others.Topics covered include:Defining the Self-Sacrifice Schema: How it drives people to prioritize others' needs over their own, even to their detriment.Origins of the Schema: Common family dynamics that foster self-sacrifice, such as growing up with an over-entitled or narcissistic parent, or being cast into the rescuer role in the drama triangle. The Schema's Impact on Relationships: Why those with a strong self-sacrifice schema often attract self-absorbed partners and struggle to set boundaries.Enmeshment and Self-Sacrifice: How enmeshment can fuel self-sacrifice by creating a sense of responsibility for others' emotions and well-being.Schemas and Coping Styles: Different coping modes, including surrendering to, avoiding, or overcompensating for the schema. The Role of Guilt and Empathic Distress: How these emotions fuel self-sacrifice behaviors and make it difficult to prioritize self-care.Practical Exercises: Techniques like chair work to identify core beliefs tied to self-sacrifice and to build a healthier relationship with oneself.Support the showCan you help support our continued production. Michiel is a psychotherapist, psychologist and author who has written widely about Schema therapy. In this wide ranging conversation we discuss the importance of authenticity and emotion in therapeutic work. Here are five key points; 1. Peer supervision in therapy can sometimes focus too much on providing advice and techniques, rather than creating a space for therapists to share their vulnerabilities and connect authentically. 2. Many training programs in therapy emphasize techniques and attitudes, rather than teaching therapists how to connect with their own emotions and share them with clients. 3. The use of schemas and modes in therapy can become overly complex, with therapists feeling the need to label every aspect of a client's internal world. This can detract from the understanding of the complexity and individuality of each person's experiences. 4. Group therapy elements should be given more attention in research and practice, as they provide a mini society where individuals can explore and learn from the differences and dynamics within the group. 5. Therapists need to prioritize self-care and listen to their own minds and bodies. This includes recognizing signs of detachment, cynicism, and loss of interest, and taking them seriously to prevent burnout.   Michiel van Vreeswijk, MSc is clinical psychologist and CEO of G-Kracht Mental Health Care Institute, The Netherlands. Dr. John Vervaeke and Gregg Henriques once again welcome Brendan Graham Dempsey to engage in profound explorations of transcendent naturalism, wisdom traditions, and the crucial significance of adaptive insight within our current existential landscape. Through discussions on religious reconstruction, animism, hyper-agents, and the role of wisdom in technology, the episode explores the connections between the sacred and the modern world. Dr. Vervaeke emphasizes collective intelligence and agency, while Brendan Graham Dempsey passionately speaks on the unfolding process of the sacred. Gregg Henriques proposes concepts like "wise NAGI" and reflects on collective awakening. Together, they inspire listeners to rethink the integration of religion, science, and reality, emphasizing the need for understanding and harmony.   Resources: Brendan Graham Dempsey Unified Theory of Knowledge   Publications: Relevance, Meaning and the Cognitive Science of Wisdom - John Vervaeke and Leonardo Ferraro  Approaching awe, a moral, spiritual, and aesthetic emotion. - Dacher Keltner, Jonathan Haidt    Videos:  Ep 67 | UTOKing with Howard Bloom | The Blooming Universe Neuroenlightenment: John Vervaeke at TEDxUofT John Vervaeke: Artificial Intelligence, The Meaning Crisis, & The Future of Humanity. [00:06:38] Dempsey discusses the Religious Reconstruction Project and the learning process, confronting the limits of world models. [00:11:40] Gregg Henriques reflects on the idea of finding meaning at the edge of what we know. [00:13:55] Dr. Vervaeke introduces the concept of the sacred as an always-beyond intelligibility, challenging traditional views. [00:21:03] Delving into schemas, animism, and the risk of misunderstanding reality. [00:28:03] Brendan Graham Dempsey introduces the concept of a new God, an iconic representation of the infinitely receding and illuminating element of reality, suggesting this could help us better understand our world.  [00:32:00] Gregg Henriques introduces the concept of the "fifth joint point" and the need for collective awakening and understanding of the underlying structure. [00:35:00] Vervaeke mentions his upcoming book, suggesting that the proposals that prepare us for the future should have authority, and mentions the internet as a potential common ground for dealing with the advent of AGI. [00:38:37] Speaking on the transformative power of encountering the "really real" and how it's woven into everything else suggests that this profound understanding of reality has a sense of authority. [00:45:20] Dr. Vervaeke and Dempsey discuss logos and multi-layered symbolic articulation underscoring the importance of language in expressing this multi-layered form. [00:49:18] Emphasizing intermediary models in learning complex concepts. [00:52:19] Brendan Graham Dempsey discusses the idea of humans as a way for the cosmos to know itself, and how this perspective gives meaning to his life. He emphasizes the need for these truths to work at an embodied, lived reality. [00:59:15] Stressing the need for alignment between religious conceptions and reality. [01:02:02] Gregg Henriques shares his perspective on the enlightenment gap and the inadequacy of science in grounding our fundamental relevance realization across all modes of being. [01:04:22] Proposing a trans-subjective epistemology, recognizing interplay over time. [01:05:44] Discussing naturalism's role in framing the context for science.

What exactly are schemas and why should teachers know about them?  We learn about retrieval practice, metacognition, cognitive load, working memory and many other cognitive theories and underpinning pretty much all of them are schemas.  It is the way that we theorise about how knowledge is stored in, linked and retrieved from long-term memory and so therefore we need to understand not only what they are but how to move our students from novice schema to expert schema.  In this episode we will look at different ways that this can be done and reflect on some best practice.  There are lots of previous episodes that link to schema that can be found via this link.

In schema therapy, the abandonment schema is one of the core schemas. It is a very primitive and primal schema. It is possibly the most central schema for all mammals, so it is common. Schemas are abiding and deeply-entrenched core beliefs that direct our lives. Schemas can give us a framework for understanding ourselves and others and interpreting what is happening in the world. In this episode, Gemma dives into the abandonment schema and explains what you need to look out for in your relationships, especially romantic relationships. You will find this episode helpful if you are in the dating world and looking to find a new partner. Yet it tends to be grossly under-examined and under-rated as a schema because it is generally considered secondary or conditional to the core or unconditional schemas like the abandonment schema, the Emotional Deprivation schema, or the mistrust abuse schema, all of which are developed very early in life.   Schemas are fascinating because they can influence many aspects of how we behave. To compensate for our unmet emotional needs, we may fall into adaptive compensatory patterns and suppress our needs and sense of self. Or we may take care of others or go along with more dominant individuals to feel accepted, avoid abandonment, or gain approval. In this episode, Gemma continues with and expands on the topic of living a subjugated life. She dives into why so many people have what may be referred to as the trifecta of other-directedness- self-sacrifice, people-pleasing, and approval seeking. She also talks about the adaptive processes children go through, to survive a domineering parent, discusses the subtle differences between people pleasing and approval seeking, and explains what you should focus on if you are an approval seeker. Stay tuned for more! Show highlights:People pleasing, self-sacrifice, and approval-seeking fall into other-directed schemas. Gemma explains what other-directedness means.Gemma talks about approval seeking and explains what happens when our validation needs do not get met, or when the approval we get is conditional.Gemma explains why so many of her clients develop the pattern of having a combination of self-sacrifice, people-pleasing, and approval-seeking schemas to varying degrees. How care-giver-guilt develops in a child, and how that impacts their needs. What happens to a child when a subjugating parent regularly uses anger to hold the family to ransom? How can early programming prevent people from ever putting themselves first? Why do self-sacrifice, subjugation, and approval-seeking often get bundled up together? The subtle differences between pleasing others to avoid guilt or because you are fearful of them and approval seeking. Why are narcissists unlikely to hand out praise or compliment anyone on a job well done? What should you focus on if you are an approval seeker?

Please note:We are not "fat shaming" ourselves or anyone else.  But we are talking about a serious and unfortunately sometimes very contentious issue - food and eating.  There are many opinions which exist in the field.  Some helpful, some unhelpful. We are not promoting unhealthy "dieting"  or "restrictive eating".   We are interested in the promotion of health, self-care, body-care, courageous acts of facing 'what is',  including unhealthy behaviour patterns; mindful self-compassion and schema and schema mode awareness. We do talk about what has worked for us in the past and make mention to the types of food we find problematic and those we wish to we limit.  It is our hope that by sharing some of our own personal journey on the subject we can provide some insight into the psychological factors which drive 'emotional eating' in those without severe eating disorders. We do like to have a laugh and use humour and we can also be irreverent sometimes!  The podcast is for information & entertainment purposes. For show notes please see our website

Welcome to another play-focused episode! Today we are tackling behavioral schema in children's play - I will define what a "schema" is, and how these patterns of behavior are evidence of the beneficial effect of play on children's brains. In the episode, I go over 8 different behavioral schemas. I will list them below with a brief description: Enveloping: fully covering objects up. Example: wrapping up a toy or one's self in a blanket. Enclosing: creating boundaries around things. Example: building a fence and putting all of your toy animals inside. Transporting: moving objects from one place to another. Example: filling up a bucket with acorns and taking them from one spot in the park to another. Connecting: joining things together, and also taking things apart. Example: building with LEGOs, knocking down a tower or deconstructing a flower. Trajectory: experimenting with the movement of an object or one's self. Example: walking across a log, rolling a ball down a ramp. Rotation: either rotating one's own body, or other objects. Example: spinning in circles, playing with a pinwheel. Positioning: lining things up or arranging them in particular ways. Example: lining up all of the toy cars over and over again. Transformation: exploring with how things can be changed from one state to another. Example: mixing potions, playing dress up. This is a great article that discusses behavioral schema in play: https://www.onehundredtoys.com/blogs/news/understanding-schema-play-in-toddlers#positioning Acoustic/Folk Instrumental by Hyde - Free Instrumentals https://soundcloud.com/davidhydemusicCreative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported— CC BY 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/acoustic-folk-instrume...Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/YKdXVnaHfo8

Having so much going on in a support program is a detriment to their success. Cognitive load is the capacity of the brain available to learn something new. It can be affected by biology - one's current cognitive capability based on development or DNA, but also by internal and external factors - motivation, self-regulation, and more. When something is learned, it becomes a part of a schema - something that is so familiar or known. Schemas don't need a lot of cognitive load to move through. The key is to reduce the cognitive load for students when you see them reaching frustration levels of learning. When we ask kids to do multiple levels of learning at one time, they can struggle or stall out. Mary suggests making a list of the issues and pick ONE that you could make progress on. Communicate with the teachers what is being worked on and support the other requirements as you make progress with one area. Continue to build skills/mastery of concepts one at a time. In this way, you can “redo” the current math support program. I'd really appreciate it if you would click the like button above and leave a review if your favorite podcast app has that ability.
