Flute 360 | Episode 253: “Making a Point to Build Professional Relationships with Nestor Torres” In today's episode, Nestor Torres and Heidi Kay Begay talk about what it takes to build genuine professional relationships. Why does this matter? It matters, because we as individuals cannot be successful on our musical journey alone. We need people. Whether you identify as an introvert or as an extrovert, you can build your networking skillset. Now don't think that “networking” is a negative word; it's not. Replace the word with “building relationships” instead. Does that feel more aligned with you? If so, give it a try! Reach out to at least five new people every week. Before you know it, you've expanded your orbit, and this is where the magic happens! Find the win/win for everyone involved, and from these relationships amazing opportunities unfold for both parties. Think about what you can create together! A new music course, summer camp, composition, concert series, or…? The sky is the limit! Shoot for the moon! Even if you don't reach it, that's okay because you'll land among the stars! Join us for our next Flute 360 Accelerator Program meetup! It's scheduled for Saturday, July 29, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM / CT! This is a perfect opportunity to practice what Nestor and Heidi talked about in today's episode. Make new friends, and get the musical and career support that you need from other 360-ers across the globe! If you register for the month of July, then you get a free 1-hour lesson with Dr. Begay! Ivan Hampden Jr. , Founder and President/CEO of Hamptown Music Institute, was born and raised in New York City, and grew up in Harlem's musically diverse neighborhoods to the rhythms of R&B, Salsa, Caribbean, Jazz, Blues, Pop, Funk and whatever else trickled in. This saturation of music inspired Hampden to start playing the drums at the age of eight, with the local Catholic school marching band. By age 13, he was playing in local clubs in and around New York City, with Blues musicians who helped instill in him a sense of timing and groove. The musical diversity of his early youth set the foundation for Hampden's future work with percussion and keyboards. Hampden started his formal training in 1973, studying at the Jazz Mobile with Charlie Percep, and at Mannes College of Music with Norman Grossman. He went on to attend Bronx Community College in 1977, where he received private lessons at the Metropolitan Opera with Richard Horowitz. During his first semester at Bronx Community College, a friend told him about the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Hampden had to be involved and joined the orchestra—a position he still holds today. While at the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Hampden was also a drum and percussion instructor at the Harlem School of the Arts, and at Seton Hall University in the Black Music Department. But his talent reached far beyond Harlem. Hampden has touched and enhanced the New York theater community as well, performing for various shows on Broadway, The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, and many more.. Not only an accomplished drummer and percussionist, Hampden is also a producer and songwriter who collaborates with such artists as Luther Vandross, Nick Ashford, Chaka Khan, Eartha Kitt, and many others. Along with being Luther Vandross' drummer and co-writing partner for 17 years (which earned him recognition four(4)times from the Grammy Awards as a Musician, Arranger and Programmer on a number of Vandross's platinum recordings) until the time of the consummate musician's death , Hampden currently records and tours with other notable artists such as Stephanie Mills, Ashford & Simpson, Roberta Flack, Phil Perry, Vanessa Williams and Jennifer Lopez. In 2001, Hampden relocated to the south, where he continues to write and produce in between touring around the country and world. In fall 2007, Hampden signed on as an adjunct professor at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina, teaching recording production I and II, and audio postproduction. In the Fall of 2010, Ivan also accepted an offer to teach Drums and Percussion at Johnston Community College. After 10 years of teaching as a music educator in North Carolina, He is now Founder and CEO of The Hamptown Music Institute in Clayton, North Carolina, where his mission is to “Develop the next generation of music industry professionals and Artists.” While continuing to be in demand as a music Producer, Ivan is also working with new local talent around the country. Live Performance credits: Bonnie Raitt, Al Jarreau, Dionne Warwick, Maceo Parker, El Debarge, Kenny Lattimore, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Michael MacDonald, India.Arie and Joe—the list goes on and on. New and accomplished talent alike seems to gravitate toward Hampden. Recording Credits: Hampden's recording resume includes such artists as Diana Ross, Akiko Yano, Ann Nesby, Doc Powell, Jocelyn Brown, Mavis Staples, The Temptations, Nestor Torres, Marcus Miller, Cathy Dennis, Howard Hewett, Luther Vandross, Beyonce Knowles, Ashford & Simpson, Sy Coleman, Tramaine Hawkins and Roberta Flack, just to name a few.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. Grammy-nominated and Latin Grammy Award-winning flutist Nestor Torres is our special guest in this episode of I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY. We have become friends over the course of the last year, and as a fellow Puerto Rican, I'm stoked that he'll be performing for the first time ever with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra this coming Fall.  Born in Puerto Rico to a musical family, Nestor shares how he was drawn to the flute because it was different. Being exposed to various instruments from a young age, predominantly drums and piano, at age 12 he had to choose one to study formally with his father's encouragement and decided on a new challenge. In New York City, Nestor studied at Mannes School of Music, Jazz at Berklee College of Music, and Classical and Jazz at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.  The rest is history. Nestor is globally renowned as a Jazz Flautist and, importantly, for his original compositions and performances that honor the multidimensional aspects of humanity and world cultures. As an exceptional and generous musician and composer, he shares insights regarding the legacy of the Figueroa Family, who are at the heart of the beginnings of Puerto Rican classical music centuries ago. A documentary about the history of the family will be screening in Orlando as well, and Nestor will share the stage with violinist and conductor Maestro Guillermo Figueroa Salon alongside the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra.  This recognition and acknowledgment of Puerto Rican talent and heritage is part of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra's continued dedication throughout the years to highlighting diverse talent and delivering equitable musical experiences. Although not planned, the presentations align with the Five-Year Remembrance of Hurricane María's devastation of the island of Puerto Rico on September 20th, 2017, providing the large contingency of Puerto Rican (18%) and Hispanic (32%) persons in the Orlando Metro area with an inclusive space to reflect on our past, present and future surrounded by community and delightful music. WUCF's June artist for ‘In the Key of Latin Jazz' is Nestor Torres. Born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, his father bought him his first drum set at age five. But eventually, he chose the flute despite his father's concerns. He moved to New York at eighteen to study classical and jazz. His unique melodic and danceable sound is shaped by his time studying the ‘Charanga'. Over the past 40 years, his recordings have garnered multiple Grammy nominations and one Latin Grammy award, achieving notable status both onstage and with his commitment to the youth. Both his solo recordings and collaborations mark the work of a great artist with a crossover fusion of sounds. "Not only an accomplished drummer and percussionist, Hampden is also a producer and songwriter who collaborates with such artists as Luther Vandross, Nick Ashford, Chaka Khan, and many others. He is a proficient studio musician as well as a charismatic tour musician with a worldwide travel itinerary. Along with being Luther Vandross' drummer and co-writing partner for the 17 years leading up to the consummate musician's death, Hampden currently records and tours with other notable artists such as Stephanie Mills, Ashford & Simpson, Roberta Flack, Phil Perry, Vanessa Williams and Jennifer Lopez. Ivan has also performed behind such Artist as Bonnie Raitt, Al Jareau, Dione Warwick, Maceo Parker, El Debarge, Kenny Latimore, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Michael MacDonald, India.Arie and Joe—the list goes on and on. New and accomplished talent alike seems to gravitate toward Hampden. Hampden's recording resume includes such artists as Diana Ross, Akiko Yano, Ann Nesby, Doc Powell, Jocelyn Brown, Mavis Staples, The Temptations, Nestor Torres, Marcus Miller, Cathy Dennis, Howard Hewett, Luther Vandross, Beyonce Knowles, Ashford & Simpson, Sy Coleman, Tramaine Hawkins and Roberta Flack, just to name a few. In 2001, Hampden relocated to the south, where he continues to write and produce in between touring around the country and world. His latest venture perhaps best shows the dedication Hampden has for sharing music and teaching the new generation the skills that made him famous. He has started a school of percussion in Raleigh, North Carolina, and is also working with new local talent from colleges in the Raleigh-Durham area. In fall 2007, Hampden signed on as an adjunct professor at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina, teaching recording production I and II. Rest assured, those pupils are receiving the best gift in a teacher that the last three decades of music history can provide. I suspect they're laughing all the while as well." Ivan is now offering classes virtually if you're not lucky enough to live near his Hamptown Music School, located in Clayton, NC. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/camillekauer/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/camillekauer/support
