What even IS a Master of Wine?! How do you become one? Which Jedi powers come with the title? Is it true the pass rate is under 10%? What's the real cost, not just in financial but also time and emotional fallout? How diverse and inclusive is the MW body? Aren't the days of ‘the expert' numbered anyway?! It's a biggie. So we're doing this in two parts – this first one is about our own experiences of becoming Masters of Wine (MWs), and we don't shy away from detailing the brutal lows as well as the giddying highs. We also share some of our tips and strategies for passing in double quick time (both of us won the Outstanding Student award in our respective years) and get the ‘establishment' views from The Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW). In Part 2 we'll be hearing from a current MW student, a recently passed MW and that most mythical of beasts…a chief examiner. Buckle up.

Part II of my conversation with Dena Tauriello and Rosa Avila. We explore more reasons why they were the only two women drummers working on Broadway and off-broadway prior to the shutdown of all shows in 2020. Some of the topics we discuss include:Should broadway have half of the drum chairs be filled by women? If so, why? Is total equality the goal? Are they just not interested, or are there more nefarious reasons for the lack of women playing drums? Is the lack of women drummers working professionally primarily because of sexism and discrimination, or are there other factors?Finding women subs—what problems have they had with recruitment and/or finding qualified candidates? Are women reaching out to them for advice on how to do what they do?What can we do to bring more women into the collective of drummers? Dena Tauriello began playing drums at the age of eight. For 20 years, she worked with NYC rockers Antigone Rising who toured relentlessly, made numerous TV appearances, and served as cultural ambassadors to Israel, Palestine, and Vietnam. She's worked with Rob Thomas (from Matchbox 20) as a member of his “RT Quartet.”She has been featured in Modern Drummer, Drum! and Sticks ‘n' Skins, a photography book about the drumming community. Just over two years ago, Dena made the switch to Broadway after landing the chair for Head Over Heels featuring the music of the Go-Gos. Since then, she has also held the chair for Kristin Chenoweth's For the Girls, Magic Mike and Galileo (reading) and was a sub at The Cher Show. Before the shutdown, she held the chair for the off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors and was set to sub at Six on Broadway. Rosa Avila was born in Germany and spent her childhood in Mexico and Austria. She began playing drums at age 16 and completed her education at Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, California. When she graduated in 1991, Rosa was presented with the Outstanding Student of the Year award and received the Human Relations Award.Rosa performed with legends like Ann Margret, Debby Boone, The Lennon Sisters, Shari Lewis, Elkie Brooks, Glen Campbell, and Petula Clark. In 1992, she began her association with Andy Williams, with whom she performed until 2009. In 2018, Rosa had the pleasure of holding the drum chair at Summer-The Donna Summer Musical on Broadway, and in 2019 she played on four shows: Chick Flick, Broadway Bounty Hunter, Love in Hate Nation, and For Colored Girls at the public theater.Don't forget to subscribe to my podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Pocket Casts, or wherever you get your podcasts.Clayton Craddock is an independent thinker, father of two beautiful children in New York City. She is certified as a health care provider for FirstLine Therapy® through Metagenics and is participating in the Advanced Fellowship in Anti-Aging, Metabolic and Functional Medicine through the Metabolic Medical Institute of A4M. Mental health should be looked at in the context of an integrated mind-body approach. Especially in cases of children and adolescents, early diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders is essential in promoting healthy development.
Today's podcast takes up the underlying reasons why there are so few women drummers working on Broadway musicals. I spoke to two amazing drummers, Dena Tauriello and Rosa Avila, to find out why they were the only two women drummers working on Broadway and off-broadway prior to the shutdown of all shows last year. Some of the topics we discuss include:Their thoughts as to why there weren't many female drummers during their formative years.Did they have women drum teachers, and if not, why was that the case?Should broadway have half of the drum chairs be filled by women? If so, why? Is total equality the goal? What about other groups of people? Should there be a proportional representation of other groups? (black, Asian, Latino, gay/lesbian, etc.) Is the lack of women drummers working professionally primarily because of sexism and discrimination, or are there other factors? What are some of the blatant sexist encounters they've experienced over the years and how were they affected?Dena Tauriello began playing drums at the age of eight. For 20 years, she worked with NYC rockers Antigone Rising who toured relentlessly, made numerous TV appearances, and served as cultural ambassadors to Israel, Palestine, and Vietnam. He is the co-founder of John’s Crazy Socks which has a mission to spread happiness through socks. Part of our goal at John’s Crazy Socks is to empower people and demonstrate the possibilities that each of us possesses. John serves as the face of the company and embodies those qualities in all he does. To prepare for his current role, John underwent years of schooling. He began his education in the pre-school program at ACDS and still remembers those days fondly. John moved onto the Huntington School system which he completed in June 2017. John’s school work included life skills classes as well as electives such as fashion and photography and he was a proud member of the school chorus. During his last three years, John split his days between Huntington High School and Wilson Tech where he studied office skills and retailing. After school, John participated in the Grand-Friends Club and the Relay for Life events. Wilson Tech named John their Outstanding Student of the Year. For a young man, John has strong work experience. In the summer of 2016, he worked in the kitchen of a local day camp, Camp Alvernia. For several years, he worked as the mail clerk at the Schlitt Law Firm. Arriving at the office every day after school, John maintained the mail supplies and stamps and made the daily run to post office, sorting envelopes and packages for the fastest delivery. He also assisted in general maintenance of the office, handling the shredding, running errands and lending a hand whenever he could. Since an early age, John devoted himself to Special Olympics activities. He engages in snowshoe, basketball, track, soccer, floor hockey and bowling. His efforts have won John numerous medals and invitations to the New York State Games for soccer, track and snowshoe. In fact, John was named an alternate to the U.S. National Snowshoe Team for the Special Olympics World Games in March 2017. John is both the co-founder and inspiration for John’s Crazy Socks. It was John’s deep and abiding love for his “crazy socks” that gave rise to this venture. John has long maintained his personal style that does not confirm to whims of the fashion industry or dictates of others: it is a style he makes manifest with his spirit and personality. His colorful, fun and often whimsical socks (Bacon!) are just part of who he is. Here at John’s Crazy Socks, John does a little bit of everything. He writes thank you notes to customers, does thank you videos, helps fill orders and helps pick out the socks that we will carry in the store. And he’s our ambassador, extoling the virtues, beauty and wonders of socks. John has appeared on numerous television shows and videos for interviews. He’s got his name above the door, so you know he’s checking to make sure we fulfill our promises. Mark X. Cronin The father in our father-son founding team, Mark, works behind the scenes with John upfront as the face of the business. Mark has extensive experience developing innovative organizations with a focus on customers. And he’s a Dad who is excited about working with his son. Mark X. Cronin’s career combines public service, technology and innovation. He is the President of Paumonok Innovations Inc., the parent company of John’s Crazy Socks. Paumonok develops online information sites and niche stores. Mark has a history developing digital offerings. In the 1990’s, he founded New Gutenberg software, which produced one of the first baseball informational titles. Mark spent most of his career in the healthcare field building innovative organizations focused on improving the delivery of health care particularly to the poor and Medicaid recipients. Mark served as Chief Operating and Technology Officer for two health care management firms that empowered doctors and hospitals to better serve patients. As the head of a leading health care consulting firm, Mark advised hospitals, health centers and physician organizations to improve care and he worked with hospitals and health centers as they created some of the best known managed care organizations in New York State. Earlier in his career, Mark served as the Director of Medicaid Health Services in New York City where he led a major Medicaid reform initiative that included groundbreaking legislation in Albany and improvements in care while restraining costs. While with the City, Mark worked under two mayors and won an award as Manager of the Year. Mark went on to work with hospitals and health centers that created some of the best known managed care organizations in New York State. He has a background in education having taught graduate studies at NYU and lectured on management at Columbia’s School of Public Health. Early in his career, Mark taught school in Queens and worked for Congressman Joseph P. Addabbo. Mark received his undergraduate degree from Holy Cross and a Masters of Public Policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. On September 3rd, 2015, the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT)/U.S. 5th Fleet /Combined Maritime Forces held a change-of-command ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt where Vice Admiral and former wrestler Kevin Donegan took command. Most of us have heard of CENTCOM, which is U.S. Central Command. NAVCENT, Naval Forces Central Command, is the naval component of CENTCOM. That’s what the Admiral does… he’s the Commander NAVCENT and the 5th Fleet. The area of responsibility encompasses about 2.5 million square miles of water area and includes the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Oman and parts of the Indian Ocean. That comprises 20 countries! Vice Adm. Donegan is a 1980 graduate of my alma mater, the University of Virginia. His first operational assignment was with Strike Fighter Squadron 131 where he was among the first F/A-18’s to strike Libya. Donegan then commanded that same squadron, completing a deployment to the Arabian Gulf where he earned three command excellence awards. He also commanded the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. He commanded Battle Force 7th Fleet and Carrier Strike Group 5 aboard USS George Washington. Donegan's most recent assignment was director of operations for CENTCOM. He served at the Pentagon as director of the Navy Quadrennial Defense Review (basically the budget review), and as the aide to the deputy chief of naval operations for Plans, Policy and Operations. He completed duty as flag lieutenant to the commander of Allied Forces Southern Europe in Naples, Italy. During that tour he deployed to Sarajevo as the NATO liaison to the commander of the United Nations Protection Forces serving as the principal air advisor during NATO's air strikes. Donegan graduated from several naval schools and colleges including the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School as the Outstanding Student, the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN), as well as completed Harvard Kennedy School's Executive Education Program in National and International Security. His personal awards are far too numerous to list here. Let’s just say it would be like listing Bruce Baumgartner’s career awards and medals. His flying experience includes over 3,800 hours in 31 different types of aircraft and over 800 landings on 15 different aircraft carriers.(source http://www.navy.mil/navydata/bios/navybio.asp?bioID=402) Let's connect: Website | Facebook | Twitter About Your Host Jim Harshaw My name is Jim Harshaw. You and I were both wrestlers once so we’re coming from the same place, which is a good place for us to start. And I know where you’re at. You’re working hard and qualified for what you do but you aren’t getting what you want. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re at the right place because you can get there from here. And I can help. Who I Am I’m a speaker, author and former Division I All American wrestler that helps motivated former wrestlers reach their full potential by getting clarity on their what they really want and taking agressive action to lead their ideal life. I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve been lucky. I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have. I will show you how. Why You are Here You were a wrestler. You’ve trained and competed in the world’s toughest sport. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track. You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not trained, competed, struggled and overcome like you have. That’s the value of your education as a wrestler. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow. Here I will teach you, with the help of brilliant minds that have been shaped by the learning that takes place in our sport, to be who you want to be. I sense that you want this because you have read this far. To take the next step today, click here. FOLLOW JIM Website | Facebook | Twitter
