Master '80's auteur Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill, Silverado, Body Heat) kicked off the '90's with this dark comedy based upon the bizarre true story of a philandering husband whose wife conspired to murder him....and yet he wouldn't die. :o The husband is Joey played by Oscar-Winner Kevin Kline (A Fish Called Wanda, Dave), the wife is Rosalie played by Emmy-Winner Tracey Ullman (Tracey Takes On) and the cast just gets more interesting from there including Oscar-nominee Joan Plowright as Rosalie's mother, Oscar-nominated River Phoenix as Rosalie's friend, PLUS Oscar-Winner William Hurt and Keanu Reeves playing two drug-using cousins.  And believe it or not....each of these characters are involved in this murder plot....AND they're ALL funny no less?? :) This film was pretty much forgotten almost as soon as it was released back in the Spring of 1990, let's find out if it should have been. Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

On March 15th, 1955, Orson Welles premiered as Lord Mountdrago in the British Omnibus horror film, Three Cases of Murder. The film consisted of three stories, Welles appeared in the one titled after his character. Ten days later he premiered in the french historical epic film Napoléon. He had a small part as Sir Hudson Lowe. Then on April 2nd, Welles appeared for BBC's TV network in the first of a six-part series entitled, Orson Welles' Sketch Book. Written and presented by Welles, the fifteen-minute episodes present his commentaries on a range of subjects. The six episodes were called, “The Early Days,” “Critics,” “The Police,” “People I Miss,” “War of the Worlds,” and “Bullfighting.” Later that year Welles took part in another series of shorts called Around the World with Orson Welles. Between June 16th and July 9th, 1955 at the Duke of York's Theatre in London, Orson Welles staged a two-act version of Herman Melville's Moby Dick. Welles used minimal design. The stage was bare, the props were minimal, and the actors, which included Christopher Lee, Joan Plowright, Kenneth Williams, Patrick McGoohan, and Gordon Jackson, wore street clothes. Brooms were used for oars, and a stick was used for a telescope. The actors provided the action, and the audience's imagination provided the ocean, costumes, and the whale. Welles filmed approximately seventy-five minutes of the production, hoping to sell it to Omnibus for a TV film, but he was disappointed in the result. The next year, old friend John Huston cast Welles as Father Mapple in his 1956 film adaptation of Moby Dick, which starred Gregory Peck. Welles later cast John Huston as director Jake Hannaford in The Other Side of The Wind. The film wouldn't be completed and released until 2018, more than thirty-three years after Orson's death. Welles modeled Jake Hannaford on his good friend Ernest Hemingway.

If Disney remakes don't scare you, no evil thing will. Years before Disney went bananas with live-action remakes of their animated classics, the Mouse House recruited Glenn Close and a bunch of dogs to update the 1961 classic about a nice old lady who just wants to own a nice coat. Okay, so she wants the coat made out of dalmatian puppy fur, so doggy parents Pongo and Perdita must recruit a small army of farm animals to stop that crazy Cruella de Vil from making what will obviously be a very ugly coat. Building up its pedigree, "101 Dalmatians" adds John Hughes-penned pratfalls in the style of "Home Alone," Jeff Daniels as an "independent video game developer" and two bumbling henchman played by Dr. House and Ron Weasley's Dad. Old Millennials Remember '101 Dalmatians' podcast A holiday hit back in 1996, the live-action "101 Dalmatians" isn't quite as infuriating as the Disney remakes that would come later. For the most part, real animals are used (minus a few awful shots of 90s-era CGI), and they don't speak, which immediately elevates the viewing above your standard "Air Buddies" adventure. Tyler and Angela discuss Glenn Close's go-for-broke performance and whether the film's rescue mission in the second half works without the animals talking to each other as the do in the original. We also try to figure out the character of Nanny, played by "Dennis the Menace" superstar Joan Plowright. She's a nanny? For a family with no kids? A live-in housekeeper? A dogsitter? A weird old lady with the power to identify pregnant dogs just by looking into their eyes? What are you doing here, Nanny?! You're making us nervous. At least Cruela de Vil makes her intentions clear. Also discussed in this episode: Strangers on a Train (1951) Laura (1944) The Clapper (2017) Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) The Land of Steady Habits (2018)

TEA WITH MUSSOLINI is exactly the kind of film you'd expect from a right-wing homosexual, wistfully recounting his misspent youth amongst delightfully polite blackshirts. Unfortunately her latest obsession is with Roger and Anita's dalmatians, Pongo, Perdita and their puppies. 101 Dalmatians (1961) brings grand adventure and social themes together in an animated classic that still resonates over 50 years later. Today live action remakes of classic Walt Disney animated features has become the norm, but in 1996 it was a fresh new idea, and they did it with out the aid of CGI. As BBC Radio 3 celebrates 70 years of pioneering music and culture, Michael Berkeley travels to Sussex to meet Dame Joan Plowright for a special edition of Private Passions. Dame Joan's extraordinary six-decade career has taken her from the Royal Court Theatre to international movie stardom, via the West End, Broadway and the National Theatre. Along the way she has won a panoply of awards, including an Oscar nomination for The Enchanted April. In a moving and wide-ranging interview, Dame Joan shares memories of a life well-lived: from her childhood in Scunthorpe, to her work with figures such as Franco Zeffirelli, and the man who was to change the course of her life: Sir Laurence Olivier, whom she married in 1961. Looking back to the Third Programme, Private Passions has unearthed a clip of one of Dame Joan's signature performances, Margery Pinchwife from Wycherley's The Country Wife, broadcast in 1960. (Laurence Olivier himself was a leading member of the 'Third Programme Defence Society'.) Dame Joan reveals her love of music, with her since childhood, and now especially important since she lost her sight a few years ago. Many of her choices are associated with special friendships in her life. Where better to start than with 'Nimrod' from Elgar's Enigma Variations, a series of musical sketches depicting some of the composer's closest friends? Other music includes Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, and William Walton's Cello Concerto. We also hear Olivier's electric (and highly musical) delivery of the St Crispin's Day speech, before Dame Joan herself recites, from memory, a Shakespeare sonnet: 'Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments...'. A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3 Produced by Jane Greenwood and Oliver Soden.

Tim and Anthony welcome Tony Czech to the show for this week's 101 Dalamatians (Glenn Close, Jeff Daniels, Hugh Laurie, Joely Richardson, Joan Plowright, Mark Williams) episode. Before they recap the movie, Anthony reads a list of director Stephen Herek's most influential films, including The Mighty Ducks and the unapologetic Mark Wahlberg vehicle, Rock Star. Tony defends NCIS, Anthony has a bone to pick with CSI, and Tim can't wrap his head around the number of dogs in the movie. Two of the guys have their world rocked, when they learn about Clarence Carter and his 1985 hit, "Strokin'". Glenn Close survives a vat molasses, and delivers a number of maniacal laughs. The 90s classic Sega CD is mentioned.

This week we mess up the order, and watch Dennis the Menace (Lea Thompson, Walter Matthau, Christopher Lloyd, Joan Plowright, Mason Gamble, Robert Stanton). The guys debate bathing etiquette while babysitting, Darren exposes his backside, and Anthony recently watched The Babadook. Honarable mentions to Gilligan's Island, Leave it to Beaver, and Dobie Gillis. Dave Navarro's hit SPIKE TV show, Ink Master, is mentioned, and the show wraps with a heated E.T. discussion. Are those welcoming aliens at the end of E.T. his parents, botanists, or parent botanists? You decide! Damage to your nether regions is unavoidable.

Kirsty Young's guest on Desert Island Discs this week is the actress Miriam Margolyes. Her rich career has seen her work with directors such as Martin Scorsese and Baz Luhrmann and she's won awards and acclaim for her film work, her theatre performances and her book readings. She made the leap from the Cambridge Footlights to become one of our most successful and popular character actresses. Yet, despite having one of the most sought after voices in the business, she says she hasn't had the career that she aspired to. She yearned to be taken more seriously and given meatier roles but, she jokes, Joan Plowright always stood in her way. On stage she seems to have the confidence and chutzpah of someone who is beyond embarrassment - but in reality, she says, for most of her life she has simply been a 'frightened little muffin'.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: The opening of the Fourth movement of the Trout Quintet by Franz Schubert Book: Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens Luxury: A flush toilet.

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the director Franco Zeffirelli. He was born the illegitimate son of a philandering businessman and a successful fashion designer, both of whom were married to other people. Unable to give him his father's or her own name, his mother plucked a word out of a Mozart opera - 'Zefferetti', meaning 'little breeze' - and gave it to her son. Somewhere along the line a slip of a pen transformed it into Zeffirelli, and Franco has gone by it for 80 years. He was only six when his mother died of tuberculosis. His father was reluctant to take care of Franco but was shamed into palming him off onto an aunt, and later his English secretary Mary O'Neill. Mary belonged to a society of English ex-pats in Florence and young Franco grew up under their extraordinary influence. His experiences were eventually fictionalised into his 1999 film Tea With Mussolini, starring Joan Plowright, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Cher. In the war he fought as a partisan and twice faced a firing squad before he met up with the 1st Scots Guards and became their interpreter. As well as using his linguistic talents, the Scots Guards gave him an early opportunity for theatrical creativity, and he made an open-air auditorium from 30 army trucks and some camouflage netting. After the war he studied art and architecture and was drawn into the worlds of theatre and film, working as assistant to the Marxist director Luchino Visconti initially but soon designing and directing his own films, plays and operas. His filmography runs to some 20 movies from the ground-breaking, and at the time shocking Romeo and Juliet of 1968 to the brooding Jane Eyre of 1996 via his stunning seven-hour Jesus of Nazareth for television in 1977, not to mention his 1990 Hamlet with Mel Gibson in the leading role. On stage he is famed for his opulent productions at the opera and he has worked with the titans of the art including Maria Callas, Placido Domingo, Joan Sutherland and Herbert Von Karajan. He is in London to direct Pirandello's Absolutely! (Perhaps) starring Joan Plowright and Oliver Ford Davies, which opened at Wyndham's Theatre on 7th May.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Casta diva (from Norma) by Vincenzo Bellini Book: Inferno by Dante Alighieri Luxury: A hammock from Hermes
