Around campfires North and South, many of the tunes played and sung during the Civil War were the work of a 35-year-old Pennsylvanian who was America's first full-time professional songwriter.By the time the war started, Stephen Collins Foster — who as a youth taught himself to play the clarinet, guitar, flute and the piano — had published more than 200 songs. His best ones — “Oh Susannah,” “Camptown Races,” “Old Folks at Home (Swanee River),” “My Old Kentucky Home,” “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair,” “Hard Times Comes Again No More” — already were widely known throughout the country to amateur and professional musicians alike.About “Angelina Baker”This song, though, was not one of the famous ones. Foster wrote “Angelina Baker,” sometimes performed as “Angeline the Baker,” in 1850 for use by the theater world's Christy Minstrels troupe.Today folks know it primarily as an instrumental dance tunes performed by old-time and bluegrass bands, almost always with a lively fiddle leading the way. An early version was recorded for Victor in 1928 by Uncle Eck Dunford of Galax, Va. Meanwhile, West Virginia fiddler Franklin George called it "Angeline" and played it with Scottish overtones.Foster's original, though, was a bit slower and had lyrics that lamented the loss of a woman slave, sent away by her owner.Huntington-born music historian Ken Emerson — who in 1997 wrote a definitive biography called Doo-Dah!: Stephen Foster and the Rise of American Popular Culture — said that “Angelina Baker” entered the American consciousness during a period of great controversy between free and slave states. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was among the hotly debated topics at the time of the song's composition, and, Emerson noted, Foster's lyrics obliquely acknowledge these controversies. (Angelina likes th' boys as far as she can see ‘em / She used to run old Massa round to ask him for to free ‘em…. Angelina Baker, Angelina Baker's gone / She left me here to weep a tear and beat on de old jawbone… )Our Take on the TuneThe Flood has always celebrated diversity. The guys often follow a folk blues with a swing tune or chase a 1950s jazz standard with some 1920s jug band stuff. And deep in The Flood's DNA are the fiddle tunes learned from Joe Dobbs and Doug Chaffin. This Civil War-era tune the band learned from fiddlin' Jack Nuckols, their newest band mate. From the Archives: How We Met AngelinaAs reported earlier, Dave Peyton and Charlie Bowen started 50 years ago trying to draw Nuckols into the band. On an April evening back in 1974, Peyton and Bowen trekked over to Jack and Susie's place in South Point, Ohio, for a jam session. It was during that session that they first heard “Angelina Baker.” Here from the fathomless Flood files is that specific archival moment. Click the button below to travel back 51 years and hear Jack on fiddle, Dave on Autoharp and Charlie on guitar:More Instrumentals? Finally, if all this has you wanting some more wordlessness in your Friday Floodery, tune in the Instrumentals channel in the free Radio Floodango music streaming service. So much of the band's repertoire these days is jazzed by Jack Nuckols' dynamic drumming. Tunes that were thought to be retired from The Flood set lists suddenly are back with a whole new burst of verve.Meanwhile, certain musical muscles that Jack thought were long retired also are being reawakened. That is because The Flood has got Nuckols fiddling again. In the Old Days…Back in the 1970s, when he was a regular at the Bowen Bashes where The Flood was born, Jack was part of the parties' circle of fiddlers, joining the likes of Joe Dobbs and Mack Samples, Jim Strother, Buddy Griffin and others. But then 20 years ago, dust started gathering on the Jack Nuckols fiddle case. And Now…Last year when Jack brought his brushes, snare and high-hat to the band room, he noticed that not all of of the group's eclectic repertoire needed rhythmic additions.“I'll just sit out on those tunes,” he said.Whoa, buddy, not so fast, his new band mates said. The Flood's folkier stuff, they said, are perfectly fit for a bit of fiddling. In other words, Jack, ahem… open the fiddle case. So, lately to the weekly rehearsals Nuckols has been bringing his fiddle, which is finding its way into more and more Flood songs.Last weekend saw the instrument's debut at a show at Woodlands during the band's performance of Walt Aldridge's beautiful ballad, “No Ash Will Burn.” Check it out in the Pamela Bowen's video at the top of this article. Jack's fiddle is now a Flood fixture.About That SongAs we wrote in a Flood Watch article last spring, we learned “No Ash Will Burn” from another veteran of those long-ago Bowen Bashes, late Floodster Emeritus Bill Hoke. Only later did we find out that “No Ash Will Burn” is the work of Muscle Shoals singer/songwriter Walt Aldridge, an Alabaman whose songs over the past 60 years have been recorded by artists from Lou Reed to Reba McEntire. For more about the song's history, click here.Meanwhile, if you'd like to see/hear more from last weekend's show, check out this earlier report. This is a public episode. In March of 1992, a vicious murder in one of Fort Worth's richest neighborhoods shook the community. Businessman and former banker Jack Koslow, along with his wife, former banker and patron of the arts Caren Koslow, were viciously attacked in their home in the middle of the night. If you listened to the very first episode of this show, the name Todd Nuckols and part of the following story might sound familiar. When I first moved to the US eight years ago, Todd was one of the very first people I met. We met up at a coworking space called 804 RVA and I asked him how to get involved in Richmond's entrepreneurship scene. Without hesitation, he pulled out his metaphorical Rolodex and generously opened up his network. To top it all off, he invited me to attend a conference in New York City with him that got me in the same room for two days with some of the world's most renowned startup accelerators.Todd's rich social capital and the generosity with which he meets people are only two of the reasons I knew I couldn't produce this season without him on the show. Todd, like me, is not keen on confrontation and conflict, yet he has managed it masterfully as a keystone in RVA's entrepreneurial ecosystem.A career technologist and committed dad, Todd Nuckols is passionate about advancing access to capital to fuel founders and community growth. Driven by faith and seeking to be part of the conversation wherever he finds himself, he wants to be known for leaving an impact on those around him for the better!Let's talk to Todd and find out how he invests in the lives of founders.Disclaimer: We had audio issues with this episode but trust me that the content is worth suffering through some of the distortions.Listen to the full episode to hear: How clarity and simplicity of mission turned one of Lighthouse's initial opponents into a supporter Why Todd says it's so important to focus on common ground when there's conflict How to compromise while maintaining the integrity of your mission and purpose How Todd says establishing a framework where everyone gets a win builds trust Why owning your failures is also key to earning trust Learn More About Todd Nuckols: Lighthouse Labs Connect with Lighthouse Labs on LinkedIn Learn More About Anika Horn: Website: www.socialventurers.com Instagram: SocialVenturers Newsletter: Sign up for Impact Curator

This episode was our most highly downloaded episode of 2018 and we are glad to re-share it as we start 2019. Greg Nuckols has over a decade of experience under the bar, and a BS in Exercise and Sports Science. He’s held 3 all-time world records in powerlifting in the 220 and 242 classes. He’s trained hundreds of athletes and regular folks, both online and in-person. He’s written for many of the major magazines and websites in the fitness industry, including Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness, Muscle & Fitness, Bodybuilding.com, T-Nation, and Schwarzenegger.com. Furthermore, he’s had the opportunity to work with and learn from numerous record holders, champion athletes, and collegiate and professional strength and conditioning coaches through his previous job as Chief Content Director for Juggernaut Training Systems and current full-time work here on Stronger By Science. His passions are making complex information easily understandable for athletes, coaches, and fitness enthusiasts, helping people reach their strength and fitness goals, and drinking great beer. Some of the questions we got to ask him included: Mobility, foam rolling, and stretching (static or dynamic) – what is good for powerlifters vs bad or waste of time? How would you recommend a powerlifter do an off season on season when they are scheduling meets in a year? Is it true that you should only work on weaknesses on off season times? Lets assume you have 16 weeks before the next meet, how much weakness work can you do before you should start focusing on being more specific on the comp movements? Should there be a body fat percentage that is optimal for bigger powerlifters to try to stay around? Is there a good rule of thumb on weight gain when trying to go up a weight class? BB medicine has the limit to 40″ on the waist and PLto win says to maintain no greater than 15% bf Cardio – are 10 minute walks enough for most lifters? What would also be good as far as cardio for general health? From Jeff Ash – Is high intensity interval training better than low intensity cardio for strength athletes trying to maximize gains?
