The word “palliate” comes from the Medieval Latin “palliare,” meaning to conceal, or to cover with a cloak. In the context of health care, a palliative approach is one that alleviates symptoms without curing disease. In this episode of The ABMP Podcast, Kristin speaks with author Cindy Spence about her book Palliative Touch: Massage for People at the End of Life, how practitioners can protect themselves during this emotional work, and why pressure, pace, and frequency are important aspects when doing hands-on work. Cindy Spence has been a massage therapist specializing in oncology and hospice care since 1999. She believes in the power of choice and pursuit of optimal well-being at all phases of life, particularly during advanced illness and the dying process. Cindy's training includes a master's degree in Public Health and more than 100 hours of continuing education from institutions such as MD Anderson and Sloan-Kettering. Co-creator of Final Touch Training, Cindy is a member of the Society for Oncology Massage, The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association, and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. As a member of the Oncology Massage Alliance, she provides massage in the chemo infusion room at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. She is also author of Comfort Massage Basics; A Training Program for Nurses and CNA's in the Hospice Care Setting. Cindy finds food for her soul in deep connection with family and friends, quiet time at the beach, long walks with her dog (Pongo), dancing, books, and prayer beads.   Resources:   Palliative Touch: Massage for People at the End of Life: https://us.singingdragon.com/products/palliative-touch-massage-for-people-at-the-end-of-life   Final Touch Facebook: www.facebook.com/finaltouchtraining/       Host: Kristin Coverly, LMT is a massage therapist, educator, and the director of professional education at ABMP. Authors Janet Penny and Rebecca Sturgeon join the podcast to discuss their new book and how it builds on the work of professional luminaries like Gayle MacDonald and Tracy Walton. We discuss mythbusting massage therapy and cancer care, working as part of an integrative team with other health-care providers, and considerations and treatment approaches. With the chances ever-increasing that all practitioners will work with someone either currently undergoing treatment or having undergone treatment in the past, it's critical to understand considerations when working with his population and the nuances of pressure, position, duration, and site to ensure client safety.   Janet Penny is a registered massage therapist and has extensive experience working with people living with cancer in both her private practice and at an integrative cancer center in Ontario, Canada. She has developed an approach that addresses the multifaceted needs of oncology massage clients, including focus on pre- and post-surgical treatments, scar tissue, radiation fibrosis, and neuropathy.   Rebecca Sturgeon started her career as a massage therapist in 2008 and began working with oncology patients in 2010. My mom is one of the many strong women I am surrounded by each day who motivates me to be the best I can be, act thoughtfully, and inspires me to be curious.  She's a strong woman. A friend. A daughter. A sister. A colleague. A chauffeur. A therapist. A chef. And an inspiration. I couldn’t think of someone more qualified to talk about life, personal growth, raising children, and finding a new purpose when it feels like your biggest job is done. The unique thing about my mom and something that I admire, is her ability to take risks and reinvent. She’s been in and out of many different career paths, each of which have been influenced by profound life events.  And two years ago, she packed up a UHaul and headed south, to Wilmington, NC to be closer to her happy place...the ocean. With no friends or clients there to greet her, she started a holistic wellness practice from scratch. She’s a licensed Massage and Bodywork Therapist, has Advanced Training in Oncology Massage, is a Yoga Teacher, Reiki Master & Occupational Therapy Practitioner She's taken these credentials deeper to create a unique and meaningful integrative relaxation practice. Her goal is to create a nurturing and supportive place for people to find comfort, to be seen, heard and touched. I hope you enjoy hearing my mom and I chat and laugh about life, love, loss and so much more, including:  what it was like having children at 23. finding a sense of self and new path at 55. how death and loss manifest in our lives. dealing with depression while raising a family. why she’s not surprised I turned out the way I did. a few things she wished she did differently. ...oh, and her love for nude beaches.

For the month of December, we will take our cues from both the Winter season, and the regular host's enforced time of self healing to spend some extra time with Linda Means, PhD, LMT and really explore the role of Self Healing in the healing process. Linda is a former research scientist who developed two types of cancer, and cures herself with these exact attitudes and techniques. A lifelong yoga practitioner, Linda is now an Esalen and Oncology Massage Therapist and holistic health coach. Her article on Oncology Massage appeared in the Fall issue of the print magazine. In this first of four parts on Self Healing, she starts with the ABCs, specifically A for Awareness and Attention. She says that healing is a holistic process designed to allow our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies to be tuned to the same wavelength at any given time, so our mental or emotional experiences are mirrored in the physical body, and vice versa. By constantly bringing ones attention to the physical body, one becomes more aware of the stress put on the body by poor posture, repetitive movements, or emotional stress. Deeper, more frequent focus of awareness on the chronic workings of the mind and the body, because the streams of thought that run through our minds that create instant shifts in our brain chemistry and all of our biochemistry, often in terms of a stress response in the body. Our physical relationship with the body also tends to be very habitual, and with deeper awareness of the body, we can begin to create new habits that erase the old dysfunctional patterns. This experiential and well as informative lesson on Self Healing is a prelude to a new podcast series in development: Lifestyle Medicine Solutions. Recorded in the Healing Room on Pittsburgh's Mount Washington, where Linda practices.
