Dr. Mark Renneker speaks at the 2025 Public Forum on Healing with Integrative Cancer Care in February. The gathering was designed to bridges wisdom traditions with emerging frontiers in healing. This year's forum explores transformation through the intersections of integrative cancer care with consciousness and healing arts, featuring distinguished speakers and practitioners from diverse backgrounds. The day included engaging presentations on patient advocacy, expressive arts, and innovative approaches to cancer care. Mark Renneker, MD Mark is assistant clinical professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Renneker has developed a San Francisco-based private medical consultative practice which, since 1988, has provided intensive research and advocacy services to hundreds of patients, family members, and other healthcare providers. About half of the cases he works with are cancer-related, most often dealing with high-risk, recurrent, and metastatic disease. The general approach he takes in his practice is to try to put the patient (and family) in charge of their overall case (and health) by learning to be in charge of their case with him (such as patient-directed consultations). To accomplish this necessitates, from the outset of the work, his going to where they are, meaning that he needs to do everything possible to understand their feelings, fears, confusion, frustrations, hopes, and desires, as well as their physical symptoms and suffering; he needs to take up their side in dealing with the disease, their doctors and the healthcare system—his alliance, his bond, is to them, less so the profession. He finds that doing this work by phone actually facilitates empowerment and intimacy—their being at home, rather than in a doctor's office, using such a familiar communication medium as the telephone, which many of them use professionally and with great authority. In this podcast episode, I had the privilege of interviewing Patricia Peat, an influential figure in the field of integrative cancer care in Europe. We delved into the significance of community collaboration in finding solutions and empowering individuals. Patricia shed light on the advancements in functional testing and the scientific nature of integrative cancer care, dispelling the misconception that integrative approaches lack research. During our discussion, we explored the limitations of tumor-centered treatment in standard oncology and the importance of considering the body's metabolism and promoting metabolic flexibility in cancer treatment. We also touched on the origins of chemotherapy from mustard gas and the need for a more effective approach. Patricia shared her personal journey, recounting her realization of the flaws in the medical system and her growing concern for patients undergoing chemotherapy without guidance on recovery or improving their quality of life. Inspired by a patient named Jillian, who integrated alternative treatments alongside chemotherapy with remarkable results, Patricia established Cancer Options to provide information and support to individuals seeking integrative approaches to cancer care. Despite facing resistance from the medical community, Patricia remained committed to exploring effective strategies while cautioning against potentially harmful practices. They advocate for a more integrated and holistic approach to cancer care, empowering individuals with knowledge about their own cancer and promoting the integration of alternative approaches. This thought-provoking podcast challenges the status quo in cancer treatment, encouraging patients to trust their instincts, question standard approaches, and take charge of their own healthcare journey. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing the limitations of certain healthcare professionals and the need for informed decision-making. The podcast also highlights the significance of individual factors, long-term effects, and achieving better overall health in cancer treatment. Join me as we explore the growth and potential of integrative cancer care and the importance of empowering individuals in their cancer treatment journey. Don't miss out on this opportunity to gain valuable insights from Patricia Peat as she shares her expertise and passion for a comprehensive and personalized approach to cancer care. - Importance of community collaboration in integrative cancer care- Advancements in functional testing and scientific nature of integrative cancer care- Addressing skepticism from traditional medical professionals and the need for evidence-based research- Realization of flaws in the medical system and personal journey in oncology- Importance of empowering individuals, considering metabolism, and promoting metabolic flexibility in cancer treatment----Learn more from Patricia Peat - https://www.peat-institute.com/----Grab my new book A Better Way to Treat Cancer: A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding, Preventing and Most Effectively Treating Our Biggest Health Threat - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CM1KKD9X?ref_=pe_3052080_397514860----Integrative Cancer Solutions was created to instill hope and empowerment. Dr. Renee James was raised outside of Brisbane, Australia. She developed an interest in veterinary medicine and after deciding to forego being a chopper pilot (for now!) she earned her veterinary degree with honors from the University of Queensland in 2003. She entered mixed animal practice after graduation and soon after recognized that she had an interest in using integrative modalities with her patients. She studied homeopathy and then earned a Graduate Diploma in Veterinary Chinese Herbal Medicine from CIVT. During this time she had transitioned into exclusive small animal practice. She partnered with Dr. Henry Stevenson and in 2015 they co-founded their Integrative practice, The Natural Vets, in Forest Glen Australia. That practice has grown rapidly to employ six veterinarians and offer a wide range of holistic modalities. Their tag line fits their practice philosophy perfectly- "At the Natural Vets we do normal stuff. Differently."Dr. James uses Nutrition, Homeopathy, and Chinese Herbal Medicine and has a special interest in Dentistry, Palliative Care, Integrative Cancer Care, and Client Education. She has spoken to the Integrative Veterinarians of Australia group on vaccine titers, minimal vaccine protocols, and Integrative Veterinary Oncology. Please enjoy this conversation with Dr. Renee James as we discuss her education, her interest in holistic treatments, her practice experience, and her thoughts on managing a thriving integrative veterinary practice.

Dr. Goodyear is the medical director of Brio-Medical, a holistic, integrative cancer healing center in Arizona. Dr. Goodyear is also the Chairman of the Scientific Medical Advisory Board for the Vitamin C International Consortium Institute, a Fellow in Functional and Regenerative Medicine, and served on the American Functional Medicine Association Board. Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Test can be ordered through Rupa Health - https://www.rupahealth.com/reference-guide Key Takeaways: The future of treating cancer Dr. Goodyear believes in taking a precision and accuracy-focused approach to treating cancer, which includes looking at multi-omics such as genomics, epigenomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and immunomodulomics. The goal is to create a treatment program that targets the tumor and one that heals the body at the same time. Vitamin C as an option for Cancer A European study showed no benefits in adding vitamin C to the patients receiving the chemo in the immunotherapeutics, but only in patients with RAS mutation. So vitamin C directly targets RAS mutations and does help if you target the correct mutations. Vitamin C properties Vitamin C supports the immune system and pro-oxidative cancer stem cells. If you're dealing with bone metastasis, vitamin C works well in penetrating cancer that is growing in bone. Overall, vitamin C is incredibly metabolically active against cancer cells but not in non-cancer cells. Understanding cancer recurrence When looking at cancer treatments today, we have to recognize that chemotherapy, full-dose radiation, and surgery can shrink a primary tumor. But research shows that it can also set up a situation where it spreads cancer cells. The vast majority of issues associated with cancer, including the cause of death, are when it spreads. So you must continue the healing process because the dysfunction might still persist. Lifestyle tips to help reduce cancer risks Living in an active, healthy, balanced, and stress-free environment is foundational to cancer prevention and treatment. So feed your body with good nutrition that will enable it to function correctly, repair broken mechanisms, and reduce inflammation. Also, help your body combat stress, take care of your emotional, psychological, and spiritual environments, and exercise constantly.

On this episode of WE Have Cancer, fellow cancer podcast host Jess Thomas Nelson shares how her life has changed since being diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer in January 2020. Since then, she’s learned that practically everyone has been impacted by cancer in some way, and has become passionate about sharing her guest’s cancer stories with the world. Guest Biography: Jess Thomas Nelson is the host of the My Cancer Story Podcast, which she started shortly after her thyroidectomy in February 2020. In her own words, “I’m not famous and you wouldn’t know me from anywhere, but I too have been affected by cancer.” She has always loved the practice of acupuncture and utilized both eastern and western medicine while recovering from her surgery last year. Table of Contents: The Power of the Cancer Community and Sharing Cancer Stories After starting My Cancer Story, Jess was blown away by people reaching out eager to share their own stories with the world. She’s learned that everyone in a person’s life is affected by cancer, and nearly everyone knows someone who’s had cancer. How it Feels to Hear “You Have Cancer” On Christmas Eve, Jess’s endocrinologist told her the nodes they’d found were most likely thyroid cancer. She kept the news from her family until after the holidays, not wanting to burden them with the weight of her diagnosis. But after she did share the news with her close family and friends, she was moved to see how many people in her life stepped up as proud caretakers and supporters. Sharing My Cancer Story with the World While lying on the acupuncture table, I got the idea to start a podcast. Jess felt that her story was fairly quick and painless in comparison to the experiences of many others, and she knew she wanted to create a space for folks to share those experiences. She says COVID-19 and quarantine pushed her to start since it was already harder to connect with members of the community in person. What’s Next for My Cancer Story? Jess’s podcast began with one episode per month and quickly grew to one episode a week. Even though sometimes the episodes can get heavy, Jess knows she wants to keep sharing these powerful cancer stories with the community. Recovery with Integrative Cancer Care Jess became interested in integrative medicine and integrative nutrition a few years before her diagnosis. When she was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer she went to her acupuncturist for help with her meridians and endocrine system. My Life Without a Thyroid After Jess’s thyroidectomy, she shares it took a while for her endocrinologist to find the right synthroid dose, and that she had to wait at least 30 minutes before having coffee or eating meals, had to become more mindful of her alcohol consumption, and tried to remember to take all her vitamins. While the adjustment may have been difficult at first, now all the timing considerations and medications are simply a way of life. From the incredible relationship between sugar and cancer, to the way metabolism impacts every aspect of a cancer’s growth, Dr. Karlfeldt has seen stunning results with a different approach. Tune in to learn how there is real hope for several different processes when battling this dreaded disease. Shrinking the cancer should not be the end goal. Today we're discussing one of the scariest diagnoses out there – one that has the potential to shut us down or become a true turning point in life: cancer. This is a topic that hits home personally for me as I have worked with a number of people who are dealing with cancer in both early and late stages. It's something that can instill fear and paralysis in people. My guest is Kirstin Nussgruber who is a cancer survivor herself. She shares her powerful survival story and her unique insight into transforming our relationship with cancer. Kirstin is an empathetic cancer mentor, speaker and educator who is passionate about helping people get out of cancer overwhelm by teaching them how to reclaim their lives. A two-time cancer survivor herself, she learned first hand the importance of an integrative approach to one's health to facilitate true healing. She offers individualized mentoring, can be hired for inspirational speaking engagements and offers interactive virtual programs such as the Beyond Cancer Program™. She is also the bestselling author of “Confessions of a Cancer Conqueror – My 5 Step Process to Transform Your Relationship with Cancer.” “It's important to be open to sharing emotions. We don't need to shield our kids from emotions. We need to be able to show them emotions, talk to them about those emotions and let them have them as well without us judging them.” – Kirstin Nussgruber On Today's Episode of A Healthy Curiosity: Kirstin's inspiring survival story. First steps in dealing with the news that you have been diagnosed with cancer. The benefits of allowing emotion to play its role. Allowing our loved ones, including children to deal with their emotions. How to avoid the blame game and regret. How can we understand the spiritual message that our physical pain is sending us? Dealing with the disconnect that can happen between our mental/spiritual limits and our physical limits. Changing our vision of what is “healthy.” What can people do with their diet to facilitate detoxification and perhaps cancer prevention? The effects of inviting fear to the table when it comes to dealing with cancer. Today I had a fantastic discussion with Dr. Paul Anderson regarding integrative cancer care. Dr. Anderson did a great job providing a reasonable, balanced overview on this topic. We cover topics including cancer screening, diets for cancer, natural medicines for cancer and why integrative cancer care is a marriage of both conventional and natural medicine rather than an either/or scenario. This week welcome to the show Patricia Daly. She is a fully qualified Nutritional Therapist (BA Hons, dipNT, mBANT, mNTOI) based in Dublin, Ireland. Following her cancer diagnosis, she left her corporate career and started studying nutrition, specialising in the area of Integrative Cancer Care. As a Swiss native, she regularly attends training courses in Switzerland/ Germany, including at the renowned Tumor Biology Center in Freiburg, Germany. Questions we ask in this episode: What is the ketogenic diet and why is it effective (with cancer)? Have you looked at exogenous ketones? What about our emotions and stress levels? Do you undertake any specific type of exercise? What does Patricia Daly eat Shop: http://shop.180nutrition.com.au/ This week, we are doing it with the fantastic Patricia Daly. This was a topic I was very excited to get into. I don’t want to give away too much for the show, because Patricia’s going to go into in great detail. In a nutshell, she was diagnosed with eye cancer at the age of 28, I think; correct me if I’m wrong, I apologize in advance. [00:01:00] Essentially, she felt she was exercising, doing all the right things anyway, and it came as quite a surprise to her. Then after that, she started to take power into her own hands, essentially. Then started adjusting her diet; was then re-diagnosed again after two more years, and the cancer had come back more aggressively. She’s clearly a very strong-willed person, and she continued to research and investigate cancer. She’s doing remarkably well and she now shares her journey and story with you. [00:01:30] You can check out her website, patriciadaly.com, where she’s got a heap of information there. She’s also got a brand new book out called The Ketogenic Kitchen, which is fantastic and I highly recommend you checking it out … from a dietary perspective anyway. [00:02:00] We get into this fascinating journey, what’s she’s learned, how she’s changed her life. In fact, and how we can apply it to ourselves as well. I have no doubt you are going to enjoy today’s show. As always, if you’re listening to this through us iTunes, just hit that subscribe button, five star us. If you’re really enjoying the shows, please leave us a review; let us know how these podcasts are affecting your lives, because we love hearing from you. Especially because we press send, the podcast goes out into cyberspace, and we know everyone’s listening, so some feedback would be greatly appreciated. Of course, if you do know anyone with cancer and is looking for more information and other people’s journeys on with it, then this podcast would be great place to share it with them. Anyway, let’s go over to today’s show. Enjoy. [00:02:30] Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I’m joined with Stuart Cook as always. Hey, Stu. Stu Hello, Guy. Guy Our fantastic guest today is Patricia Daly. Patricia, welcome to the show. Patricia: Yeah, hi. It’s brilliant to be here. I’m delighted to be asked to come on your show, it’s great. Guy [00:03:00] Look, I’m very excited; I’m very excited about your show and your own personal journey and story. I just believe it’s going to inspire and help so many others, because it’s such a fascinating topic as well. Before we get into that, Patricia, I’m going to ask you a quick question. That was basically, “If somebody stopped you on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say?” Patricia: I would say I’m a nutritional therapist. That’s usually sort of the most neutral form. If I absolutely don’t want to talk about … That’s the thing, as soon as you say you’re a nutritional therapist, people just jump on it and they actually want advice on what to have for breakfast. Welcome! I’m excited to introduce today’s guest, Dr. John Whitcomb, who is my personal doctor. He is a brilliant and talented physician and functional medicine practitioner in Brookfield, WI, and he has a long and distinguished career. He grew up in India as the son of missionaries, then attended Johns Hopkins University and Yale Medical School. He is board-certified in internal medicine, emergency medicine, disaster medicine, and holistic and integrative medicine. He is board-certified by the American Academy of Anti-Aging and has completed the only masters’ program in Metabolic and Functional Medicine at the University of South Florida. Dr. John is currently completing a masters’ program in Integrative Cancer Care. Join us for this exciting conversation! While practicing emergency medicine, Dr. John realized that doctors were waiting too late to treat illnesses instead of going back to the source to find out what is causing the disease. He has traced several of the most common chronic illnesses in the US to ONE SOURCE. That source is dysfunctional glucose metabolism. Listen to learn the relationship between blood sugar and heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and kidney failure. Dr. John says that Americans have been distracted concerning heart disease by blaming high cholesterol. “It’s disordered glucose metabolism and carbohydrates that are the fundamental enemy of health.” In this episode, Dr. John discusses the following topics related to high cholesterol: When we eat more carbs than we need, the liver turns them into fat, then sends them via the bloodstream to various fat storage cells all over the body. Dr. John has an easy-to-understand analogy to help anyone understand this concept. The relationship between HDL and LDL is crucial to understanding fat metabolism. High cholesterol can be “fixed” in under a month by simply eliminating carbs from the diet. Dr. John shares his personal experience with lowering his cholesterol numbers by eating a 70% fat diet! Listen to hear what he recommends. The AHA and ADA have convinced Americans that saturated fats are the cause of high cholesterol and related illnesses. This simply isn’t true, and the truth is finally beginning to be told in medical journals. Know your “dashboard data.” Dr. John says the numbers to notice are blood sugar, hemoglobin a1c, HDL, and insulin level. Dr. John’s ketogenic (high-fat) diet consists mostly of eggs, butter, and cheese. If you control your lipid metabolism, your body fat, and insulin level, then the inflammation is low, and your risks for leading chronic diseases are lowered. Two cautions on a ketogenic diet are making sure you get enough salt in your diet and making sure you don’t eat too much protein. Dr. John has fascinating information to share that will challenge what we have all been taught about diet and nutrition. Join us to hear his explanations and experiences! Now it’s your turn! WHAT changes have you made in your diet? HOW have those changes affected your health? WHAT has been your biggest challenge while implementing a healthy lifestyle? WHO do you want to hear from? Let me know in the comments below and I will try my best to get them on the show! I want to answer your burning questions and for YOU to add your thoughts to the conversation.
