Helps our relationships
In this episode, Joe interviews neuroscientist, board-certified psychiatrist, health tech entrepreneur, inventor, and Co-Founder & Chief Medical Officer at Apollo Neuro: Dr. David Rabin, MD, Ph.D. He talks about his path to psychiatry; his realization that trauma and chronic stress were primary themes at the root of most mental illness; and the creation, research and implementation of the Apollo wearable: the first scientifically-validated wearable technology designed to improve energy, focus, and relaxation based on touch therapy. The idea was born from Rabin asking himself: If we're all starved for touch and constantly feeling unsafe, our bodies prefer a calm, soothed state, and MDMA seems to work by amplifying feelings of safety and essentially telling our brains, "you're safe enough to heal now," could a rhythmic vibration programmed to stimulate touch receptors and put our bodies into a meditative state fool our brains into the same perceived feeling of safety – especially if that stimulation is constant? Would our nervous systems be able to tell the difference? So far, the data seems to prove that this technology works. He discusses what they learned from initial research about how people were using their Apollo wearables; heart rate variability and what changes it; MAPS' Phase III MDMA-assisted psychotherapy results; the idea of the inner healer; using the Apollo in conjunction with ketamine and other psychedelics to ease pre-experience anxiety; and the concept of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy as reverse trauma, the reality that it could stop epigenetic memory, and the question of whether or not the Apollo can do this on its own. Apollo Neuro is continuing their research by running 14 different trials right now, and if you ever participated in a MAPS trial, you're eligible for a free wearable. If you're just curious about trying the Apollo, you can receive $50 off using this link. Click here to head to the show notes page.
Chronic stress can be at the root of everything from mental health struggles to digestive problems to heart disease. Today on Raise the Line, we're going to learn about a wearable device made by Apollo Neuroscience that uses gentle vibrations to help the body adjust to stress. “Apollo is based on all the same principles that music is based on. It's wearable music for your body,” explains the company's co-founder and chief medical officer Dr. David Rabin, a neuroscientist, psychiatrist, health tech entrepreneur and inventor who has been studying the impact of chronic stress in humans for over fifteen years. A close reading of non-Western medical practices led him to realize that, generally speaking, the focus was on reducing the “fight or flight” response and increasing our parasympathetic rest and recovery system. With that in mind, the Apollo device acts on the vagal nervous system with a gentle vibration that delivers safety signals to your skin in the form of low frequency music that you can't really hear, but you can feel. In this revealing conversation with host Shiv Gaglani, you'll learn more about how and why Apollo works and its connection to Rabin's interests in psychedelic-assisted therapy, the importance of safety in the provider-patient relationship, and how to effectively blend Western, Eastern and tribal approaches to medicine and healing. Anatomy Trains inspires these practitioners to work with holistic anatomy in treating system-wide patterns to provide improved client outcomes in terms of structure and function. This desire resonates with our emphasis on the problem-solving process, rather than the teaching of a singular technique or approach. Missy has been a mental health ambassador for the last 8 years with charity Sane Australia. She explains that as a result of the pandemic human touch isn't a part of the ‘norm' anymore “for 2 years we were told to not touch anybody”. “Touch is the fundamental way that humans communicate, bond and heal” and explains unfortunately some people don't have that opportunity. Missy says that Cuddle Therapy is a different type of Touch Therapy, and it is a private session. She and her colleagues are trained in Cuddle Therapy and informs us that there are 99 cuddle positions! There are different packages you can book from 1 hour to a full day.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Here I am briefly sharing what I've been up to recently and introducing the touch modality called Beholding: Relational Somatic Healing. Find out why it's supportive in healing developmental trauma.
Research shows that Humans don't simply want touch; we need it. When we don't get enough positive human touch, we can develop a condition called touch deprivation, which can increase stress, anxiety, and depression and lead to numerous additional negative physiological effects. As a response to stress, your body makes a hormone called cortisol. This can cause your heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, and breathing rate to go up, which in turn negatively effects your immune and digestive systems. Individuals who go without positive physical touch for a long period can even suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Today on Discovering True Health we are going to learn about how Thai yoga therapy massage can be a powerful tool in trauma recovery and the healing process. We'll also learn about what the cycle of trauma is and how how trauma can get trapped in our mind and body. And we'll be discussing what touch literacy is and the biological importance of human contact. And the negative impacts of our touch-deprived society which have been exasperated with the pandemic. My guest is Drew Hume, Founder and Director of Navina, a Thai Yoga Therapy School based out of Costa Rica. At his school he educates his students on the physical forms of Thai Massage, touch-literacy, and human biology. And his broader mission is to ensure that as a culture, we become more touch-literate and help dissolve the culturally ingrained habits that have been spread out of the fear of touch. We are all placed on this earth plane for a specific reason, and Tami Cook feels her mission is to help people reconnect back to their original self through a holistic approach of touch therapy. Tami has been practicing the art of bodymind balance for over 12 years. Her journey began at the AVEDA Institute in Washington DC where she studied a holistic approach to Esthiology, learning how the merging of ancient eastern wisdom paired with western technology could bring forth transformational results within the integumentary system. Desiring to dive deeper into the knowledge of the bodymind connection, Tami furthered her Education at the Institute of Psycho-Structural Balancing where she developed her skills as a Bodyworker. Some of the modalities she's studied were deep tissue massage, circulatory massage, spinal balancing, cranial sacral therapy, neuromuscular therapy, sports massage, reflexology of feet, hands, and ears, structural visceral integration, rock taping, rock blading, polarity, Lomi Lomi, Reiki, and cupping therapy just to name a few. Her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology paired with four years of experience as an educator in the Baltimore City Public high school system along with nine years of experience as an educator in the esthetic/massage industry gives Tami Cook a well-rounded approach to working with all people regardless of age, gender, culture or socioeconomic status. Acknowledging people as whole; their body, mind, and spirit is what brings life to the psychosomatic approach Tami takes in and out of her treatment room. Tami Cook's eclectic background has attracted people from all over the world who seek to know the ‘why' and ‘how' behind her ability to seamlessly integrate several modalities into one to create bodymind balance. When Tami Cook is not in the treatment room working one on one with her clients, she is traveling the world teaching her unique style of bodywork to fellow professionals seeking to deepen their awareness of the whole aspect of who we truly are. Michelle and Emily share a bottle of Maysara Autees while welcoming guest Angelia Scott to Cliterally Speaking the Podcast. They share a wonderful bottle of pinot blanc from Maysara Winery called Autees. Michelle met Angelia at the Mannequin Art Project where Angelia and her partners in Sacred Touch STL had their mannequin art piece, "Mr. Cosmos & Mrs. Earth," on display. They talk about the emotional release that occurs when an art piece is finished almost as if giving birth and how differently art impacts the artist versus the audience. Emily and Michelle ask Angelia to explain the Platonic Touch therapy practice she is involved in. She shares how she came to the therapy first as a client and then later as a practitioner. She was dating a little and experiencing difficulties connecting, uncomfortable with intimacy with her walls up, The conversation continues with the exploration about some of the walls women put up before relationships, during, and then afterwards. How sometimes we see people for their fullest potential and the let down when they continue to not meet that potential. How hard it is to just accept that the person is exactly who they present themselves to be. She talked about how her desire to be a good partner and understand why intimacy and vulnerability could be so difficult and anxiety producing led her to platonic touch therapy. They talk about letting go of the conditioning that most touch should lead to sex. A post from Sacred Touch STL really resonated with her and inspired her to learn more about Cuddling Therapy. "The amount of love and touch you have in your life is how much you think you deserve." And she wanted to change her life. They discuss how trauma impacts our bodies and psyches and can manifest in various ways. Angelia stressed that platonic touch therapy is a trauma-informed practice. She explains what a client can expect during sessions. Angelia shares how her desire to have a healthy relationship with a partner as well as to be closer to her children manifested as a result of participating in the therapy. Angelia shares some tips for people to get comfortable with bringing more intimacy in their lives. This conversation is inspiring, warm, insightful, and hopeful. I give a lot of thought to what makes a great sex life. What makes us sex life healthy, what makes it enjoyable for people, what makes it fulfilling? When I consider the kinds of things that matter, I think about the ability to slow down and be present in the moment. I think about the ability to tune into your body and to know what you want in that moment. Not just abstractly, like if I asked you at breakfast what you wanted for dinner, but what do you want right now? It's equally important to know what you don't want. Not just knowing what your boundaries are, but also how do you recognize what is making you uncomfortable or that something isn't pleasing right now? And then how do you speak up about that? It's crucial that you're able to communicate with a partner in order to ask for what you want (and to speak up about what you don't) to negotiate and collaborate with them. Another important aspect of better sex is the ability to enjoy the journey. So, instead of being goal oriented or focused on performance or on an outcome, to have better sex, you've got to just enjoy what you're doing in the moment with the partner. You're fully present. You're not in a hurry. There's no test that you pass or fail at the end of it. Those are critical components of good sex. This is not an exhaustive list, but it is a good starting point for what I work with people to accomplish in their intimate lives. There are a lot of professions that help people with this. So, while I do this as a sex therapist, other mental health counselors work with people around some of these issues. Massage practitioners are working with people around touch and just being in their body. I had an earlier episode of Better Sex with a Tantric Healer who's explicitly working with people around what they want, communicating consent, boundaries, and presence. And it turns out I've learned about a new profession, or at least new to me, of people that that help with these issues and skills. I met Anna Joy Reedy, who is my guest today, through a colleague, and I was really struck by how warm and sincere she is. As we talked about what she does, I was fascinated, so I invited her on the show. She is a professional Cuddlist. She has a philosophy degree that she's put to use as an entrepreneur, and she is enthusiastically pioneering this new frontier of touch therapy as a Cuddlist. This is something she's fascinated by and really moved to share with people. She's really interested in all things somatic and she told me she's got lots of, "not yet birthed writings" in the works too. She's got a lot to share and I'm just delighted that she's on the show with me today. We talk about what a professional cuddler does and what you can expect in a session. We also answer the question, "Is it ever sexual?" and cover safety concerns. And, most importantly we talk about the healing power of platonic touch. Proven to help reduce chronic pain and depression, while boosting immunity and enhancing mood, platonic touch and cuddling can positively impact overall wellness. Much like yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, professional therapeutic touch is healing and transformative. It's crucial that you're able to communicate with a partner in order to ask for what you want (and to speak up about what you don't) to negotiate and collaborate with them.Another important aspect of better sex is the ability to enjoy the journey.
