*to skip banter fast forward to 5:55* In this episode of the Exiles Podcast, we take on the biblical principle of "outdoing one another in honor." We draw from passages like Romans 12:10 (NIV) which says, "Honor one another above yourselves." We discuss how this commandment guides us in our interactions with fellow believers and the world. We also address the challenge of selfishness and competitiveness and how adopting an attitude of honor can counteract these sinful tendencies. This episode aims to inspire and equip each listener to live out the principles of honor, love, and humility in their daily interactions, ultimately drawing them closer to Christ. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-exiles-podcast/support
For our third Slasher Summer episode this season, Viddy Well Film Blog's Aaron Haughton returns to break down our next “Remake That Rocks”: David Cronenberg's mental- and physical-disintegration masterpiece The Fly. Cronenberg's mid-80s remake of 1958's “The Fly” is part gothic horror romance, part ethical sci-fi allegory, and features the body horror that is a trademark of the maestro director. Outdoing the original film by leaps and bounds, Cronenberg dares us to care about the main characters before showing us how vanity to be superhuman turns deadly - and stomach churning. It's time to Pop That on 1986's The Fly.

In this episode Breanne shares about her journey with deep trauma including abandonment from her mom at a young age and domestic violence and how healing these wounds can stop it from becoming a generational trauma passed on to our kids. By having and sharing this conversation here on the podcast we are allowing other people to learn how each of us can use these trauma as a guiding force to better ourselves. When we decide to do the work and heal these traumas, powerful things can happen. Progress to perfection - Our Journey (SERIES #1) Don't mistake activity for achievement. - John Wooden by Pastor George Lehman Every child of God needs to have a goal, an aim, a target of what you want to achieve in Him. You cannot be born again and be indecisive about your Christian life. Achievement – so busy with God's things but how is my life changing? Am I achieving growth? How easily we can get sucked into believing things that sound good but aren't even biblical. Eg., Striving for excellence motivates you; striving for perfection is demoralizing. - Harriet Brailer (How can it be demoralizing to want to be like Jesus?) No one is perfect, that's why pencils have erasers. (Just an excuse to stay the same.) There are no perfect men in this world, only perfect intentions. – Robin Hood, Prince of thieves. Have no fear of perfection, you'll never reach it. - Salvador Dali (Stay as you are – give up.) If there were no such ability within man, Jesus would never have said, “Be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect.” -Matthew 5:48 Psalm 138:8 (KJV) – The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands. Paul understood this: Philippians 3:12(NIV) – Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. The apostle Peter brings great guidance and instruction to the church to aim for perfection. Perfection is not: Becoming better than others; Outdoing someone else; Being smarter or having more knowledge of the bible than others. No, it's about you becoming more like Jesus. I want to start with Peter's ending of the process to perfection before we look at what he said: Start with the end result and work our way back! 2 Peter 1:8-9 (NIV) – 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that he has been cleansed from his past sins. What he taught was very profound and easy to understand but without the Holy Spirit helping us, verse 8-9 will apply to your life. Steps to progress to perfection. 2 Peter 1:3-7 (NIV) – 3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. Firstly Peter gives 2 goals: Positive goal: Is that we can participate [deel hê] in the Divine Nature. (Jesus reminds us in Matthew 5:48 about that divine nature). Matthew 5:48 (NIV) - Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Negative goal: To escape the corruption and ungodly ways of this world. The truth is – the more we become partakers in His divine nature, the further we escape this world's corruption. Note verse 5: For this very reason, ‘MAKE EVERY EFFORT'. Church of Jesus – it will take ‘EFFORT'. The steps to a life of perfection: Goodness (Excellence) Knowledge Self-control Perseverance Godliness Brotherly kindness Love To let love, operate as it should we need to go through a process of perfection. It all starts with FAITH. Hebrews 11:6 (NIV) – And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. It's the foundation from which we build. Galatians 5:6 (NIV) – For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. It's about the faith that's alive and active in us – not about doctrine faith. It's not WHAT you believe – it's IN WHO you believe. 2 Timothy 1:12 (NIV) – That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day. #1 Goodness Greek word is “areté” meaning excellence. It means excellence in any and every area which you find yourself doing something. That's what faith is about – you live out what you believe with excellence. James 2:17 (NIV) – In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. Real faith will always produce. People testify but don't produce. Peter is saying, “add to your faith”, make it work, show people that what you believe works in your life. (How? By my excellent life.) In your ministry, at home, at work, in your social life - in fact, everywhere! #2 Knowledge. It's knowledge of God's will. It's not achieved by education and study of books – it's spiritual. You can have great intellectual knowledge and zero spiritual. Colossians 1:9-10 (NIV) – 9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding. 10And we pray this in order so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, It's spiritual, not intellectual. The kinds of knowledge as Pauls describes: Knowledge - wisdom, insight, not intellectual (I understand it by revelation). Increasing knowledge - it's always moving forward, increasing (never stagnant). Discernment or sensitivity towards God's will (as you acquire His knowledge, you want to please Him). Produces fruit in our lives which bring glory to God. Jesus said, “let me see your good works, it will glory God”, Matthew 5:16. This knowledge has only ONE source – God's word (The Bible). Psalm 119:9 (NIV) – How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. Psalm 119:11 (NIV) – I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:130 (NIV) – The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. With - No plan, no strategy, no goal, no aim, no effort. Don't expect to ever attain any kind of perfection. I would rather aim for perfection and miss - than aim for imperfection and hit it. *****

Sermon Recording Sermon OutlineSpeaker: Rev. Charles DrewJohn 17:20-26 (ESV) 20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”Sermon OutlineA problem for our time: “Watch and listen to politically polarized commentary today, and you will see that it is more contemptuous than angry, overflowing with sneering, mockery, and disgust. Studies on the subject have shown that, whereas simple anger is characterized by short-term attack responses but long-term reconciliation, contempt is characterized by rejection and social exclusion in both the short-term and the long-term. Polarization, and thus, contempt, leads to permanent enmity.” (Arthur C. Brooks, NY Times 4/10/16)A great opportunity for the church:…that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me (v. 23).I) Reflecting the love between the Father and the Sonv.22: …that they may be one, as we are one A) Honor and respectWithin God’s very nature is a divine “rhythm” or pattern of continuous giving and receiving—not only love but also glory, honor, life…each in its fullness. Think, God the Father loves and delights in the Son (Mt. 3:17). Jesus receives that love and pleases the Father (Jn. 8:29). Jesus honors the Spirit (Mt. 12:3), and the Spirit glorifies the Father and the Son (Jn. 16:14, Romans 8). Each person in the Trinity loves, honors, and glorifies the others, and receives love and honor back from the others…There is never any lack. (John Samaan writes in the “Servants among the Poor Newsletter”B) “Outdoing one another in showing honor.” (Romans 12:10)C) Governing the way God does.II) Sharing the values and the longings of the Father and the Son v. 22: …that they may all be one, just as you Father are in me and I in them, that they also may be in us.A) Loving what Jesus and his Father love. B) Working this out in politicsHumility Principles and strategies C) Strategic loveSo that the world might know (Father) that you sent me” (v. 23). III) Our great hopeFather, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am. (v. 24) Take away: A “political” cup of coffee with a Christian Prayer of ConfessionFather, Son, and Holy Spirit, in you we see both the value and the pattern of love. One God in three Persons, you have for all eternity enjoyed each other’s company, and lived for the honor and joy of one another. With one heart you created, you sustain, and you have acted to redeem our broken world. Our love is not like yours: it is weak and selfish, diminished by mixed motives. Forgive us for reflecting you so distortedly. Change us, we pray. Help our church not to reflect the polarizations of our time. Draw us more fully into yourself so that we may be more like you and more fully with you. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.Questions for ReflectionRead the following statement by Arthur C. Brooks “Watch and listen to politically polarized commentary today, and you will see that it is more contemptuous than angry, overflowing with sneering, mockery, and disgust. Studies on the subject have shown that, whereas simple anger is characterized by short-term attack responses but long-term reconciliation, contempt is characterized by rejection and social exclusion in both the short-term and the long-term. Polarization, and thus, contempt, leads to permanent enmity.” (NY Times 4/10/16)Does he accurately describe the political climate now? Have you contributed to that climate? If so, why? Jesus prays that we will love each other as he and his Father have always loved each other. John Samaan describes that love in the following statement. Read it, look up the passages he cites, and then spend a few minutes praising God for the love that he expresses within himself. Within God’s very nature is a divine “rhythm” or pattern of continuous giving and receiving—not only love but also glory, honor, life…each in its fullness. (Servants among the Poor Newsletter)To love each other as the Father, Son, and Spirit love each other is to “outdo one another in showing honor.” (Romans 12:10). It is to “compete” over who can understand the other person or group better, who can listen more carefully, who can speak more graciously to and about the other, and who can better promote the legitimate interests of the other. Grade yourself on this standard in each of the following areas: with family members, with your neighbors, in the workplace, in your political discourse, in your use of social media.Recall the distinction in the sermon between moral principles and political strategies. How does making that distinction help reduce the heat when you find yourself at odds with someone over politics? Why, according to John 17:23, is it so important that we learn to manage our political differences amicably?Reflect on John 17:24-- Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am. Thank him that he wants you with him, and that he endured the loss of his Father to bring you safely home. Thank him that he wants all his children—regardless of their political affiliation—safely home with him, and ask for his help to love the “political opposition” in the way he loves you.Plan on a “political cup of coffee” with someone at EPC whose politics differs from yours.
Loren talks with Pastor and author Doug Pagitt about hats, church, and living out Jesus' promise of "Greater Than."
Communities are made up of individual friendships. The health and potential for genuine love within the community is only as good as the interpersonal relationships within it. Paul in Romans 12 declares that a community should have genuine love as its overall goal. Paul then declares that genuine love requires that people love each other with mutual affection, outdoing one another in showing honor. “Outdoing one another in showing honor” simply means being willing to celebrate other’s successes. That sounds like it would be easy and we may even want to assert “of course I am happy for my friends when things are going well,” but if we are honest often it is easier for us to mourn with those who mourn, than to celebrate with those who celebrate. We spend a lot of time in churches talking about sitting with those who suffer, but we don’t always talk about what it takes to celebrate with others. In this weeks message Pastor Sarah shares how learning to celebrate with others will require us to- surrender the outcome of our relationships, have a mindset of abundance, have a deep understanding of our own giftedness and an ability to empathize with others.

Visiting Valley Presbyterian Church in Portola Valley, California from Minneapolis, Minnesota, author and pastor Doug Pagitt shared the message of his latest book, "Outdoing Jesus" on September 22, 2019, and discussed how we can build a more loving world. This was the third week of the church's "Gather Around" fall sermon series, as we considered our third VPC core value: Focusing outward, we build partnerships, create opportunities, seek justice and learn from each other. www.valleypreschurch.org
Though considered a disorder, obsession, in my eyes is seen as 'fuel to keep going'. Outdoing my peers in all fields with tho hopes of always uplifting each other by making ourselves ever curious, no feeling like it. My take.
This week we have a very special guest speaker: Doug Pagitt, who just published a new book titled, “Outdoing Jesus: Seven Ways to Live Out the Promise of Greater Than.” In this episode, Doug speaks to us on what it might mean to outdo Jesus (John 14:12 gives us a good starting point), looking to the story of Jesus healing a Roman official’s son (as told in John 4:43-54) for inspiration.

Do you find yourself getting so close to reaching your financial goal or getting that promotion but you screw it up in some way? Do you find yourself saying if only I was ___(smarter, thinner, nicer, different, more disciplined, good enough)__ then my life would be __(better, easier, happier)__? Do you find yourself struggling either keeping a relationship or feeling misunderstood in your current relationship? If you said yes to any of these, you could be unconsciously sabotaging your happiness. In this episode I'm tackling 3 out of 6 ways we unconsciously sabotage: Outdoing, Burdening, and Love Theft. Romans 12:10 commands us to have a radical mindshift where we view others with a love that we reserve for our families. We don’t just kinda like or tolerate - we love deeply.
INS Career Management is an impressive trailblazer for family friendly small businesses! The company provide a free on-site crèche, flexible working, daily yoga, boxing, walking clubs and more. This month, Parents At Work CEO, Emma Walsh, interviews Sophia Symeou, CEO and co-founder, and Adam Aaron, Learning and Development Manager of the Sydney company leading by example. There aren't many small or medium size businesses that can claim to be as family friendly as INS. Emma Walsh, says "the fact is that often they feel like they don't have the resources and funding required to offer generous paid parental leave and wonderful flexible work arrangements." But this small Aussie company has been compared to Google - except, as Adam Aaroon puts it, "We're Google without the hammocks. We're Google with the cots." In an inspiring news.com article, Sophia says "creating workforces for the future is about creating flexibility in the workforce, and if you want Mums and Dads to be able to work equally, you need to provide the basic structure for them to do that". In this podcast interview, Emma finds out exactly what they're doing, and how they're making their family friendly workplace a reality for their business.

Picture this… It’s minutes before your webinar starts. You know —the one that showcases your $20K offer. You’re shadowboxing to Eye of the Tiger when all the sudden your slide deck goes on strike. Is it possible to recover from a technical mishap and still crush it? Caleb O’Dowd did. In fact, he closed 30% of his audience. If that didn’t impress you, he had a webinar that did over $7MM in sales in 2017. In other words — he’s the man. In this episode, learn the secrets behind his conversion superpowers and how he’s harnessed tonality and passion to whip attendees into an emotional buying frenzy. Did we mention he got his start working with Gary Halbert? Episode Discussions: Repositioning offers to crush conversions Selling more with tonality, delivery, and passion The conversion-boosting "mentorship loan" offer you’ve never heard of Strengthen weak copy in your webinar script Breakdown of a 2017 $7MM webinar Outdoing yourself and evolving your webinar to stay relevant The “Two Friends Talking” example that stirs curiosity You may have an excellent offer but is it going to the right audience? Keeping your audience engaged for 3+ hour webinars Training attendees to buy using The Yes Ladder technique One of the biggest secrets to selling anything Could having the camera on kill your response? Effective positioning against competitors [2:25] Caleb's origin story: Got his start working with Gary Halbert Started selling high-ticket items with webinars several years ago Got hooked when he realized there was no faster way to generate millions of dollars in such a short period of time [4:23] "One of the big secrets to selling anything is to truly believe in your heart and soul that what it is you're selling is valuable and potentially life-saving."-CO [6:13] The image you want to portray when hosting a webinar: Visualize two friends talking and having a good time. See their conversation as they’re laughing and joking with each other. You're naturally attracted and curious as to what they're talking about. [7:17] Tonality and Delivery. Use energy, power and enthusiasm to captivate your audience. If you're not a passionate person, fake it ‘till you make it! "You can whip people into an emotional buying frenzy."-CO [9:36] "People are buying YOU the presenter. If you don't have the greatest slide deck or script, they will buy your passion above all." [11:04] Caleb's slide deck crashed right before his webinar for a $20K offer but still closed 30% of his audience using passion and delivery. [12:01] He doesn't like to have the camera on during webinars. In his experience, "it kills response." [17:22] In 2017, he launched ‘The Newspaper Profit Formula’ for $3K with fair results. Repositioning the webinar to ‘Supplement Business Launch Formula,’ generated $363K. [20:18] Keep your audience engaged for long webinars and effectively position your products against competitors. [28:39] The ‘Yes Ladder’: ask your audience questions that are easy to say yes to — ultimately training them to say yes to your offer. [34:22] Attendees need to feel like they're better off because of your training program and learn something positive even if they didn't buy. [35:10] The conversion-boosting "mentorship loan" offer: Positions the product to be ultimately far more valuable than asking price Performance-based guarantee Demonstration of belief [37:40] Evolving and updating your webinar to stay relevant: One thing isn't going to work forever. "If the webinar that you have today is the same as the webinar you were using 2 or 3 years ago, you're probably boring the crap out of your audience and certainly your marketplace."
