Durana Elmi, Founder & COO of Cymbiotika If not quite a story of rags to riches, the story of Durana Elmi's rise to success certainly comes close. Born in Afghanistan, Durana witnessed poverty, injustice, and oppression everywhere she turned, especially towards women who sought freedom and equality. Wanting more for herself and her future family, Durana immigrated to the United States to pursue her creative passions and make a name for herself. Durana quickly climbed the corporate ladder and became the Director of Marketing at AT&T. With her invaluable experience and business and relationship management skills, Durana decided to change course and pursue her passion for health and wellness. Shortly after, Durana became the Founder and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Cymbiotika, where she transformed the company inside and out. Incredibly innovative, Durana created the world's first custom subscription bundle platform and broke massive records. Under Durana's leadership, Cymbiotika's growth skyrocketed. In just the last four years Cymbiotika has achieved record-breaking numbers, doubling their customer subscriptions to a total of over 150,000 subscribers and increasing annual revenue from $1 million to over $100 million. Furthermore, Cymbiotika added over 40 SKUs to the company's product offering in the last three years. Always looking for ways to improve, Durana transformed Cymbiotika's call center from an offshore facility to entirely in-house and moved its headquarters to a state-of-the-art facility in San Diego, CA. Cymbiotika has been awarded Fortune's Great Places To Work for three consecutive years. The company also achieved the 187th position on Inc. Magazine's 2023 list of America's Fastest Growing Companies for two consecutive years within its first two years of eligibility. With over 150,000 subscribers and a rapidly expanding team, Durana is, and always will be, a people-first leader. She has garnered recognition through prestigious awards, including San Diego Business Journal Business Woman of the Year, Female Executive of the Year, Globee Female Leader of the Year, and Dynamic Woman of San Diego. Despite her challenging upbringing as an Afghan immigrant, she remained focused on her goals and passions. As a champion for women, her unwavering dedication creates an environment where women thrive and lead with confidence.

In this episode of Europe Talks Back, Gail Rego tells the story of Elmi, a 60-year-old man who emigrated to Poland twenty-seven years ago from Somalia. Elmi started a new life in Poland's capital Warsaw and in 2007 established the Foundation “Good Start” in order to help newly arrived migrants with navigating the complex asylum process, translating official documents, arranging hospital visits, and organising Polish language courses. Almost three decades after arriving in Warsaw, he had to deal with the ruling Law and Justice Party's hardline on immigration. Still, the opposition's victory in the October elections is giving him fresh hope for the future. Reporting on the ground by Maria Dybcio. “Most of the people are like me, running from wars.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.06.22.546089v1?rss=1 Authors: Yu, F., Courjaret, R., Elmi, A., Hammad, A. S., Fisher, M., Terasaki, M., Machaca, K. Abstract: Membrane contact sites between various organelles define specialized spatially defined signaling hubs, they are of great interest to better understand inter-organelle communication and its implications on cellular physiology. ER-mitochondria contact sites (ERMCS) are one of the best studied and mediate Ca2+ signaling that regulates mitochondrial bioenergetics. However, little is known about ERMCS during mitosis. Here we show that ERMCS expand during mitosis using transmission electron microscopy, serial EM coupled to 3D reconstruction, and ERMCS markers. ERMCS expansion in mitosis is functionally significant as it is associated with enhanced Ca2+ coupling between the ER and mitochondria resulting in heightened activation of mitochondrial dehydrogenases. Our data suggest that ERMCS remodeling in mitosis is important to meet the increased energy needs during cell division. Copy rights belong to original authors.

It only takes a few seconds on Hanaa Elmi's Twitter timeline for even the most oblivious observer like myself to know that what she is doing is magical. One post from February details several images of student contributions from reflections on Stone Soup and other related readings - child's handwriting draws your eye to the center of each poster - We take care of each other by…We take care of water by…We take care of the Earth by… - student drawings and reflections surrounding those prompts create the shared understanding - Hanaa also captures “Our Ideas” in the margins - have a spirit of ubuntu (I am because we are), she writes, Be like the Water Walkers, Love water!Another series of images shows her young students exploring questions like “What's the heart of the story? What do you think the author wants us to know in our minds & hearts as a reader?”, one student reply reads “Ms. I think the heart of the story is that anger is okay and normal. We just have to breathe.” Hanaa prompts students to explore the differences & similarities between justice & charity. She quotes from one of the dozens of books her students use, “What are words really? Are they just random letters arranged in different ways? Or do they have magical powers that can inspire and amaze?” A student uses a number string to double 40. Students with clipboards find and sort animals on a number line by their height. They write, draw, & reflect in dream journals. I could go on and on and on… In every post, it's so obvious that students are deeply engaged & invested in the world & with each other. Community, love, joy, and learning are self-evident in the work she does with kids.GuestsHanaa Elmi is an elementary teacher in Windsor-Essex County. She is a graduate of the University of Windsor who roots her work in community: creating thriving spaces that humanize students.
