What if the key to effective leadership, communication and fostering good culture is as simple as just being nice? It may be, according to author and business owner Winn Claybaugh. He's the founder, co-owner, and dean of Paul Mitchell Schools, a group with more than 100 cosmetology or barbering schools throughout the United States. He tells host Jason Almire that his widely-acclaimed self-help book, “Be Nice (Or Else!),” still resonates more than 20 years and a pandemic later.Winn tells Jason that, while his background is in cosmetology and barbering, this idea of prioritizing kindness can translate to every industry because it goes to the heart of a fundamental need — people wanting to enjoy their job. He says the best leaders take responsibility for the culture of a workplace and use their influence to focus not just on systems, but making employees feel like they belong. And with that sense of belonging, he argues productivity and profits increase while absenteeism diminishes. To learn more about Career Education Colleges & Universities, visit our website.

Welcome to another insightful episode of Building the Premier Accounting Firm, hosted by Roger Knecht. In this episode, Roger engages in a thought-provoking conversation with the guest, Mike Every, COO & co-founder at FilmLaab, as they delve into the crucial aspects of leadership, mission statements, and effective financial management. Mike shares his expertise as he emphasizes the significance of establishing clear accounts receivable processes within a business. He underscores the importance of not only getting paid for products and services rendered but also reducing the need to write off unpaid bills that may end up in collections. One of the key takeaways from the conversation is the importance of identifying the right person within a client's organization who handles bill payments. Mike highlights that many times, the person you're initially in contact with might not be the one responsible for this crucial task. This underscores the importance of clear communication and direct interaction with the decision-maker. Mike stresses the value of setting clear payment terms right from the outset. He discusses the significance of specifying deposit amounts and due dates in contracts, allowing clients to budget effectively and avoid unexpected invoices that can strain their finances. Roger and Mike also have a discussion on mission statements and leadership. Mike shares his insights on the need for companies to have a clear and compelling mission statement. He believes that every leader should not only know but also wholeheartedly believe in their organization's mission. Without this clarity of purpose, leadership becomes challenging, and organizational goals may become unclear. This podcast episode also touches on the art of asking the right questions. Mike emphasizes creating a safe and open environment for employees and clients to engage in meaningful dialogue. This approach allows for the collaborative generation of solutions and fosters an atmosphere of trust and innovation. This episode provides valuable insights into leadership, mission statements, and financial management. Joining me today is Co-Founder and CEO from Salty Dawg Pet Salon, John Kanski.Kanski founded Salty Dawg Pet Salon in 2018, when he noticed that typical grooming shops took his Springer Spaniel behind closed doors and left her in an anxious state during her visit. Kanski, a Paul Mitchell School owner with locations across four states, dreamed of redefining the grooming experience by creating an expedited process to teach licensed hairstylists and barbers to groom animals. Turning his dream into a reality, Kanski teamed up with Winn Claybaugh, founder and co-owner of Paul Mitchell Advanced Education (the franchisor of 100+ cosmetology and/or barbering schools operating under the Paul Mitchell School brand), and Gary Ratner, a lifelong expert in the beauty industry with over 40 years of experience in retail, real estate, store operations, and franchising.I hope you enjoy today's discussion with John Kanski from SAlty Dawg Pet Salon
Jay & Ashley Nelson, "Results are a compound effect of great action", Real Estate Advisors & Team Leaders at eXp Realty, shares their story on Global Luxury Real Estate Mastermind with Michael Valdes Podcast #220 Jay & Ashley Nelson have decades of real estate experience between them. The Nelsons were ReMax owners, and Ashley's family owned a Century 21 franchise when she was growing up. The passion and deviation they feel for the agents in their organization are heartfelt. They genuinely want their success before everything else, and it shows. The lessons they learned throughout their career are powerful, and they candidly share their story in this interview. More About Jay & Ashley Nelson: Nashville's Jay and Ashley Nelson knew the good, the bad and the ugly of being broker-owners. The Nelson's owned a RE/MAX franchise and Ashley's grandparents owned a Century 21 franchise, so they were deeply knowledgeable. When a friend, who was a brand-new agent, insisted they watch a video on eXp Realty, Jay told him, “We love you, but there is nothing you can show me in real estate that I probably haven't already wasted a million dollars on.” Somehow, Jay and Ashley relented, watched the video and were stunned. “We paused the video halfway through and said to each other, ‘We are leaving RE/MAX and doing this!' We filled the application out that very night,” said Ashley. “We were able to come to such a quick decision because eXp Realty solved the challenges of owning our own brokerage and allowed us to do all of the things we love about owning our own brokerage and be able to do it on a global scale!” The couple joined eXp in May 2017. Jay and Ashley reconnected as adults in Nashville where Jay was an aspiring country singer and Ashley a business director with the Paul Mitchell Schools brand. They got into real estate in 1999 with a small mom-and-pop agency, learning the ropes. And still, to this day, are actively selling real estate. “We just love it,” said Jay. “People get sick of it because they don't make it part of who they are. If you care about the process and the people, it's very inspiring. It's a big deal for people to buy a house. Everyone is different, but it is rewarding when you come across someone who is appreciative. When we are selling houses, the client is our friend and stays our friend.” Like many real estate professionals, the 2008 housing crash hurt them badly. “I had 122 townhomes in default. I went down pretty hard,” said Jay. “I learned a lot. I learned what I won't do again. But I believe you're never failing, you're just learning.” Ashley agreed. “You define yourself when you're on the bottom and on the top. How are you going to behave in both situations?” The two weathered the storm and have reached a comfortable lifestyle, selling real estate, coaching agents, and enjoying their five adult children and first grandchild. Learn more about Jay and Ashley Nelson: Years in real estate: Since 1999 Gross sales and transactions in 2020: $17.5 million on 45 transactions. Dani Tygr is a 34-year-old hair stylist from Los Angeles, California. In addition to film and television, her work has been featured in music videos, red carpet events, music tours, music festivals, editorials, runway events, and more. Prior to contracting Lyme disease, Dani traveled all over the world working in the beauty industry serving as an executive global platform artist and technical educator. She graduated from the Paul Mitchell School of Cosmetology and won various awards including the Modern Salon Top 100 Artist and the Paul Mitchell Hairstyling Award. In her late twenties, Ms. Tygr first began to exhibit increasingly intrusive symptoms which she later learned were caused by Lyme disease. At 31 years old, she could no longer manage her illness and the true destructive nature of Lyme disease reared its ugly head. Ms. Tygr was diagnosed with late-stage Lyme disease at the age of 32. Doctors had initially associated her symptoms with thyroid disease and autoimmune disease which runs in her family prior to her Lyme diagnosis. She was misdiagnosed by many doctors with a “damaging” mental health illness and one doctor told her she “really needs to get mental help from a professional because this is all in [her] head.” Dr. Moses A. Laufer from the Holtorf Medical Group in El Segundo diagnosed and treated Ms. Tygr with various herbs, supplements, BPC-157 (peptide), and more. They also targeted immune function and utilized a special diet. If you would like to learn how a young woman from Los Angeles learned how to forge a new and better version of herself through chronic Lyme disease as she continues to give it her all and thrive in all aspects of life, then tune in now! Hair Ye! Hair Ye! Paul Mitchell Hair Schools Are A Winner When It Comes To Training and FUN-Raising! Giving them a huge shout out! Joining me for a fun conversation is Winn Claybaugh, the Dean & Co-Founder of Paul Mitchell Schools & the author of "Be Nice or Else". Check out the number on the check below from their recent celebrity supported event. Talk about nice! Winn ironically has no hair and was never a hairdresser, did not go to college and barely finished high school. His passion drove him to the top and he's extremely proud of his schools and students and passionate too about giving back and making a difference. Every year students and staff from 100+ Paul Mitchell Hair & Cosmetology schools around the country raise money and awareness for selected charities. Raising $5-$10 dollars at a time from cut-a-thons, hair shows and car washes they've raised over $23 Million over the years! What an accomplishment! Coming from a long line of hairdressers - I'm always interested in the hair industry. My Grandma, Aunts, Mom, were all in it and my sister in law, and daughter are in it now. (How lucky am I to have 'in-house' beauty whisperers?) Besides always being a fan of Paul Mitchell hair products - I'm so impressed with what I've been seeing them do with Paul Mitchell Schools for the greater good. School enrollment is up too because many decided as a result of the pandemic, to pursue their untapped passion in this area. That's great news for salons everywhere who like many other businesses post-pandemic, are understaffed. In addition to the above, in honor of National Ovarian and Breast Cancer Awareness month, Paul Mitchell & the nationwide network of Paul Mitchell Schools once again partnered with Bright Pink a non-profit that focuses on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancers in women. I cannot tell you how important this is! I should know! I am only here typing this because of early detection of both. I am a very grateful ovarian and breast cancer survivor. And though I enjoyed the unique freedom of having no hair for awhile like Winn ...I'm grateful to have my hair back these days to style with Paul Mitchell products.
George Brunt has over 40 years of business and legal experience advising both large and small companies. After representing Alcatel, Citicorp, International Telephone and Telegraph (ITT) in the General Counsel position and serving as Of Counsel to Greenberg Traurig, a leading international law firm, he founded Business Legal Management LLC. George built the multimillion dollar companies of Controldocs.com (now known as iControl ESI) and PBW Holdings Inc., and owns several Paul Mitchell Schools. Here are some key insights from this week's show: Do the right thing right. It's not whether or not you're brilliant but how you're brilliant. Success unshared is failure. Prefer to watch the video version? You can watch it here.
I like to say that all my guests have something special that they bring to the podcast. Most of them are hairdressers, or started out as hairdressers and then maybe have gone off in another direction. But sometimes there are people in our industry that have made a huge impact and contribution to hairdressing even though they have never stood behind the chair with a column of clients. My guest today is one such person, his name is Winn Claybaugh and he has made and continues to make an extraordinary contribution to the hairdressing industry. Amongst many other things is a proud father, motivational speaker, podcaster, author or the book ‘Be Nice or Else' and the Dean and Co-Founder of Paul Mitchell Schools. In today's podcast we discuss: What leadership is… Who is responsible for motivation The importance of consciously creating a culture …and we even briefly touch on ‘Gilligan's Island' In this episode: [0:01:34] An introduction to today's guest, Winn Claybaugh, and the focus of today's show. Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a kind but effective leader?
The founder, dean and co-owner of Paul Mitchell Schools, Winn Claybaugh is also the author of Be Nice (Or Else!) and longtime host of the MASTERS Audio Club. In 2016, American Salon named Winn one of the five “Industry Leaders Who Helped Revolutionize Education” in beauty. In this episode, Winn shares both the story behind his rise to prominence and insights into creating both a successful business and career.
You might think that the main output of Paul Mitchell Schools would be excellently-trained hairdressers, but Winn Claybaugh and John Paul DeJoria set up the schools to make an impact on the world through their students, who just happen to be excellently-trained.
Recently I taught this webinar for our Paul Mitchell Schools on how to be resilient. I believe there has never been a time where resiliency will serve you better than now! Listen in as I teach and gain live feedback from listeners with an interactive poll and chat box! What is T's Takeaway? " Be compassionate with yourself."
