Whatever happened to downtown's elevated People Mover?

You may have become so used to them that you no longer notice, but snaking through downtown Indianapolis' northwest quadrant are the remains of a revolutionary public transit system that transported riders on elevated tracks 30-feet high. It was called the People Mover, developed for $44 million by Clarian Health Partners, the hospital system now known as Indiana University Health. From its launch in 2003 to 2019, it recorded roughly 6 million rider trips on a 1.4-mile track running between Methodist Hospital, University Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children.  The People Mover had the cooperation of city officials, who allowed the track to use public right of way along Senate Avenue, West 11th Street and University Boulevard. And the People Mover was filled with promise, as some predicted it could be expanded to a larger public transit system that would include Indianapolis International Airport. But tram came to screeching halt in 2019, when IU Health said it would begin offering shuttle buses instead and expected to save about $40 million over 10 years. That also was about the time IU Health began planning a massive facility consolidation and modernization project downtown. IBJ reporter Daniel Lee has a personal connection to the People Mover and recently began looking into what remains of the twin-track system and whether IU Health has any plans to resurrect it. In this week's edition of the IBJ Podcast, Lee also gauges support for a proposal that would transform the infrastructure into an elevated trail celebrating the heritage of Black communities on downtown's northwest side.

Step with us into Tomorrowland, that curious realm where yesterday's futures linger in an increasingly static present. Why do Disney fans profess deep love for a land they rarely prioritize visiting? The answer lies in Tomorrowland's remarkable journey from hasty afterthought to kinetic wonderland to its current static identity crisis. Our live audience at the Howard Johnson's "Suite of the Retro Future" helps us dissect what made Tomorrowland truly magical - not science fantasy, but genuine progress in motion. The 1967 "New Tomorrowland" represented a perfect convergence of transportation systems: monorails gliding overhead, PeopleMovers circulating endlessly, submarines diving beneath the surface. Everything moved! The land wasn't about laser blasters and aliens; it was about showing Americans what their future could actually be.When did we lose this vision? As we trace Tomorrowland's evolution through corporate sponsorships, Operation Paperclip scientists, World's Fair connections, and eventually the 1998 renovation that prioritized intellectual property over dynamism, a troubling pattern emerges. Yet our passionate audience offers compelling solutions - from embracing "The Tomorrow That Never Was" concept to incorporating sustainable energy demonstrations that would make the land both educational and kinetic again.Whether you're nostalgic for the PeopleMover or curious about what Tomorrowland could become, join us for a thought-provoking exploration of Disney's most philosophically complex land. As one audience member aptly suggested: perhaps it's time to encourage guests not just to remember the optimistic futures of yesterday, but to imagine new ones for tomorrow.==========================================================================Visit our friends from the episode at:Our host, Paul Barrie from Window to the Magic (https://www.windowtothemagic.com)Tracey and Scott from Disney Indiana (https://disneyindiana.com)Clinton from Comedy4Cast (comedy4cast.com)/The Topic is Trek (https://www.thetopicistrek.com/)Tony from Above the Firehouse (https://www.abovethefirehouse.com)Our good friend Jill booked our travel for us.  She's terrific.  Reach out to her at jill@touringandcruises.comThanks for listening! We'd love it if you would give us a cheeky little review on your podcast platform of choice. Driving Kia’s Carnival people-mover – the high-grade 2.2-litre turbo diesel 8-speed automatic GT-Line at $73,060 plus on-road costs. A spacious three-row 8-seater, and as a large family carrier nothing comes close. Kia Australia hastweaked the suspension on the latest series, with modified front springs, upgraded shock absorbers and recalibrated power steering, and it makes theCarnival shrink around you, behind the wheel feeling much smaller than it reallyis aided by an excellent 360-degree camera and front, side and rear sensors.148kW of power, 440Nm of torque gives it gutsy low down pulling power althoughas a front driver it can get some torque steer pull through the steering wheelunder heavy acceleration. And it’s a shame in some ways it doesn’t have all-wheel drive. Economy, Kia claims 6.5L/100km which I got close too and with a 72-litre fuel tank the range it offers is impressive. Whether full laden or just with adriver the suspension tune is compliant with great ride on any surface. With threeavailable drive modes a really pleasant vehicle behind the wheel apart from theoverzealous lane keep assist, driver attention monitor and speed sign recognitionwhich is simply over-reactive. When it comes to moving a large family around nothing else comes close to the 8-seat Kia Carnival - it dominates the people mover segment with around 80 percent of the sales – there’s now 11 variants including a petrol/electric hybrid although diesel represents around 90 per cent of the volume. I drove the 2.2-litre turbo diesel 8-speed automatic Carnival GT-Line at $73,060 updated mid last year and gaining a $5,400 price lift. This is a big people mover – 5.15 metres long and spacious with three rows of seats and if you have a large family, it’s the bees’ knees. You may shun a people mover over an SUV however the Kia Carnival will change your perceptions. With rear power sliding doors its just so safe and practical – the flexibility of the interior a high point with the ability to turn the second row into individual outboard seats, the centre seat can be removed, making a walkthrough to the third row. The prestige GT-line has no options apart from paint and is loaded with features. Yes, it lacks a full-size spare wheel, just a space saver, however the deep luggage compartment is the bonus. The Carnival GT-line simply the burger with the works. Drive details next. I’m David BerthonSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"As I lived near Detroit and grew up in Windsor, I was drawn to a field recording of the People Mover (a 13-station elevated transportation railway system in downtown Detroit). This railway was built by a Canadian company and opened to the public in 1987. "In my submitted composition, I was drawn to the musical sounds used to indicate the stops along the line. I wanted to elevate these sounds as punctuations over the existing mechanical sounds of the tracks and breaking sounds of the train. I also wanted to emphasize the acceleration and deceleration in terms of movement." Detroit people mover reimagined by Troy Ouellette.

The Detroit People Mover is a 2.94-mile (4.73 km) elevated automated people mover system in Detroit, Michigan. The People Mover opened on July 31, 1987. The recording was taken from inside the DPM on a ride around the city. It sounds industrial, mechanic and reflects the ruggedness still present in Detroit.  Recorded by Rebecca Goldberg.

When Chrysler revived its Pacifica badge for its reborn minivan in 2017, few would have imagined that a minivan would be Chrysler's only 2024 offering. Technically split further into the Voyager and Pacifica models, Chrysler's minivan ascends to near-luxury territory with the top-flight Pinnacle trim. Maybach-Esq pillows adorn the second row, and leather and soft-touch materials appear in droves. Sitting atop the Pacifica hierarchy, the Pacifica Pinnacle is also available with the 3.6-liter V6 Pentastar under the hood or the 3.6-liter Pentastar that works with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. With PHEV power the Pacifica can move over 30 miles on battery-only power and can manage around 540 miles of range per tank of fuel.  On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek's Patrick Carone hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Chrysler Pacifica PHEV and puts it through its paces. Adding to these segments, Carone chats with host Wesley Wren about the Pacifica, the state of the minivan, and Chrysler's current lineup. Most of the listeners on this podcast were probably not born much less visited the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. Yet perhaps no project outside the Disney Parks has had more influence on the Disney Parks themselves than the New York World's Fair. So many attractions that we know and love like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Spaceship Earth, and the Peoplemover have their roots in the four exhibits done by the creativity and imagination of Walt Disney and his team of Imagineers for the fair. After considering how Disney captured the interests of those seeking to build a pavilion at the fair, we look at four projects themselves: General Electric's Progressland, Ford Magic Skyway; Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln; and "it's a small world". We'll share little known stories and we'll see all of these ended up in some form or another at Disneyland and subsequently Walt Disney World. And we consider today how almost every attraction built by Disney such as Star Wars Galaxy's Edge has roots in the New York World's Fair. Disneyland replaced it's beloved PeopleMover with a clunky attraction that contained hard stops and sudden bursts of speed. Was it the worst ride ever? How is the People Mover (and Indiana Jones) related to Big Thunder Mountain? In this episode of Distory, we chug along in our story of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Disneyland as we highlight some of the unique processes and features of its construction. Though this episode had a few bumps in the rails (our audio/video had a glitch - sorry about that!) we still walk through the stories and secrets of the queue, including some antiques, superstitions, nods to other Big Thunders around the world, and an odd feature borrowed from another Disneyland attraction (and then subsequently adopted accidentally into a major movie franchise). As we come into the station (literally), we get angry at some trash cans, search for vultures, learn a thing or two about a logo, and discover a bizarre walrus that makes Kirk nervous. We end this episode at the beginning (of the ride, that is) where a few horseshoes and a little-noticed plaque will keep you busy the next time you're waiting for the wildest ride in the wilderness. We've got a bit of a conference exhaustion after a very busy Thursday, but Devon O'Reilly and Fletcher Sharpe picked up themselves and we digitally got together for a little post-Detroit Policy Conference conversation. And a lot more. 02:08 - Can Michigan grow? Some say that retainment should be the focus over attraction. Do we need a different strategy? Is it realistic to say all areas will grow? 07:47 - Although there were complaints transit wasn't on the agenda, transit was everywhere in the discussion at the Detroit Policy Conference. One speaker, Michael Griffie, talked about expanding the Detroit People Mover, and none other than Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said it's something they're looking at. We discuss! 12:31 - Word is the Detroit Auto Show is moving back to January next year. Will that help bring back the shine and interest? People seem very divided and there's been a lot of feedback. We discuss. 17:00 - Is it generational divide, or cognitive dissonance? Many are very surprised that with the Michigan Growing Together council this is the first many leaders are hearing about issues with the region and state. Yet, people in their 40s and under - this is the air we breathe, seeing friends move off and stay in other regions. Did the conference finally publicly air a pretty big generational divide? Did you want to see the speaker sessions? Sessions are being posted online. Before 2018, Subaru's three-row efforts hadn't exactly been noteworthy. In fact, more people talk about the odd rear seats in the bed of the Brat than think about the short-lived Tribeca nameplate. Despite existing for nearly a decade, the Tribeca didn't help put Subaru's three-row efforts on the map. Though, in a market dominated by crossovers, it was only a matter of time before Subaru would take another bite at the three-row apple. Well, that time came in 2018 with the release of the 2019 Ascent. The Ascent takes what makes Subaru crossovers successful and stretches it enough to make space for a third row of seats. Naturally, powering this Ascent is a 2.4-liter boxer 4 that sends 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque through a CVT and into the standard all-wheel-drive system. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek executive editor Tom Murphy hops behind the '23 Subaru Ascent to put it through its paces. Murphy takes you on a guided tour of the Subaru Ascent and highlights some of his favorite features. Murphy also takes you along a live drive review of Subaru's three-row crossover. Alongside these segments, Murphy chats with host Wesley Wren about the Subaru Ascent, Subaru's history with crossovers, and more. The pair also discuss the Subaru Ascent's position in the perpetually growing crossover space. Closing the show, the two break down what makes the Ascent special.

In the magical world of Disneyland, there are stories that often remain hidden behind the enchantment. Join us in this episode of The Scarecast as we peel back the layers of Disneyland history and explore three intriguing and chilling stories.First, we take you to the heart of Disneyland, to a small apartment above the Firehouse on Main Street. This was Walt Disney's personal retreat, and even after his passing, his beloved lamp in the apartment's window has remained lit. But what's the eerie legend behind this glowing lamp? Then, we shift our focus to Grad Nite, a tradition for high school graduates that has a darker side. In 1966, a young man named Thomas Guy Cleveland embarked on an ill-fated adventure that ended in tragedy on the monorail tracks. His story reveals a side of Disneyland rarely talked about—a side where accidents can turn magical nights into nightmares. But that's not all; just a year later in 1967, another tragedy occurred on the People Mover ride, where a teenager lost his life attempting a dangerous stunt. The eerie question arises: What are the odds of two eerily similar fatalities occurring on the same ride?Join us for a journey into the unknown, as we uncover the legends, mysteries, and haunting experiences of Disneyland. WDW Radio # 719 - Top Ten Things in Walt Disney World That Are Better at Night - From the WDW Radio Archives On last night's WDW Radio LIVE show, I spent the evening wandering my way through Tomorrowland, to not only celebrate the opening of Tron Lightcycle /Run, but speculate on the future of this land. As we explored the entire land as the golden hour dissolved into twilight, Tomorrowland was energized with new life... and light, and takes on an entirely new atmosphere at night. Riding the Peoplemover and looking over at the spectacular, color-changing canopy of Tron, I thought not only about how beautiful this (and other lands) are at night, but how some things in Walt Disney World are just better after dark. So for this week's show From the Archives, we're going back to 2009 and show # 104, where we discussed our list of Top Ten Things in Walt Disney World That are Better at Night. In more than 18 years of podcasting, I very VERY rarely revisit a topic, but enough time has passed and new additions to the parks and resorts have been made that it may be time to reexamine this list on an upcoming episode. But for now, please enjoy this look (and listen) at our list, and I invite you to share suggestions of what else needs to be added when we make up our new list (spoiler alert... Tron WILL be on that list). Share your thoughts in the WDW Radio Clubhouse at WDWRadio.com/Clubhouse, or call the voicemail at 407-900-9391 (WDW1) and share your story on the show.
