EPISODE 71 - “STEVE & NAN's FAVORITE CLASSIC FILMS OF THE 1970s” - 1/20/2024 The 1970s was a decade that saw the rise of the auteur. Filmmakers like Scorsese, Coppola, Cassavetes, Altman, Lumet, and DePalma hit their stride and brought to the screen their specific vision and stylized films. It was a very experimental era where boundaries were pushed and once-taboo topics were explored. It became a creative high point and gave us some iconic movies. This week, Steve And Nan take look at some of their favorite films of the 1970s.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Terrance Malick and the Examined Life (2024), by Martin Woessner;  Films of the 1970s (2017), by Jurgen Muller; Hollywood's Last Golden Age: Politics, Society, and the Seventies Film in America (2012), by Jonathan Kirshner; How the Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll Generation Saved Hollywood (1998), by Peter Biskind; Picture Shows: The Life and Films of Peter Bogdonavich (1992), by Andrew Yule; “Jane Fonda on Klute,” July 18, 2019, The Criterion Collection;  TCM.com; IMDBPro.com; IBDB.com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  Smile (1975), starring Bruce Dern, Barbara Feldon, Michael Kidd, Nicholas Pryor, Annette O'Toole, Joan Prather, Melanie Griffith, Geoffrey Lewis, Maria O'Brien, Colleen Camp, Eric Shea, Denise Nickerson, and Titos Vandsis; Klute (1971), starring Jane Fonda, Donald Sutherland, Roy Scheider, Dorothy Tristan, Charles Cioffi, Jean Stapleton, Rita Gam, and Vivian Nathan; Badlands (1973), starring Martin Sheen, Sissy Spacek, Warren Oates, Garry Littlejohn, Alan Vint, and John Womack; The Sting (1973), starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Robert Saw, Robert Earl Jones, Charles Durning, Ray Walston, Charles Dierkop, Harold Gould, Sally Kellerman, and Eileen Brennan; The Last Picture Show (1971), starring Timothy Bottoms, Cybill Shepherd, Jeff Bridges, Ellen Burstyn, Ben Johnson, Cloris Leachman, Eileen Brennan, Clu Gulager, Sam Bottoms, Sharon Taggart, Randy Quad, and Bill Thurman; A Little Romance (1979), staring Laurence Olivier, Diane Lane, Thelonious Bernard, Arthur Hill, Sally Kellerman, Broderick Crawford, David Dukes, Andrew Duncan, and Claudette Sutherland; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. With the passing of the "Pope of Pop Film" Roger Corman at 98 this year, a key era of American moviemaking left us. Producer/Director Roger Corman famously made hundreds of movies without "ever having lost a dime". He did this by shrewdly making very low budget genre pictures catered to what was hip at the time (monsters, drugs, motorcycles, sharks, aliens...) with super talented hungry young moviemakers. Jack Nicholson, Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdonavich, Martin Scorsese, Joe Dante, Jonathan Demme, James Cameron just to name a few all come out of the unofficial "Roger Corman film school". And Corman himself directed or produced key indie genre movies including the Edgar Allen Poe series of the 1960's, Monte Hellman's COCKFIGHTER from the 1970's, etc. Secret Movie Club programmer Craig Hammill looks at some of the "rules" a moviemaker can still learn from the maverick master who made daring movies while also protecting the bottom line.

EPISODE #419-- What happens when New Hollywood meets Old Hollywood? A spree killing, apparently. And repurposed stock footage from some Roger Corman schlock (RIP). We're talking Peter Bogdonavich's TARGETS from 1968. We also talk about how a lot of old heads helped inspire the new (and also how Peter Bogdonavich was kind of a massive sack of garbage, human being-wise). We also talk about George Miller's BEYOND THUNDERDOME (1985) and FURIOSA (2024), as well as Michael Bay's own debut picture, BAD BOYS (1995). In Cruz's Cinema Corner, he talks about THE AMERICAN FRIEND by Wim Wenders and DUNE 2 from this year. Lots of good stuff. Nice little spread of cinema. Join the cause at Patreon.com/Quality. It seems fitting that the way in which Orson Welles described Alexander Woollcott is the same way many who knew Welles would have described him. That's going to bring our look at Orson Welles' radio career to a close. We've now covered Mr. Welles in long form three times — in episodes 79, 104, and now 141. We also covered his time as The Shadow in depth in episode 131. Is this the last time we focus on Orson Welles? That remains to be seen, but next month on Breaking Walls we'll move to NBC where we'll focus on one of the more underrated detective shows of the mid-1950s. That show? Y'all ever see that movie where a boy ninja schemes up a mass shooting at a drive-in with a bevy of 70s babes and souped up sports cars? Oh, maybe that was actually three different movies. We head on over to Reseda with Boris Karloff to catch a flick at the old drive in, with Peter Bogdonavich's debut feature Targets (from 1968). Sure, we're living in the midst of Vietnam era angst and social turmoil, but nothing could go wrong, right? Finally! Of course, it's 2007's Death Proof, featuring the most feminine footwork this side of a Cynthia Rothrock vehicle. And twice the vehicular homicides! All this plus Parker's mysterious future, JFD's Farts & Arts Corner, hard to nail down EC comics, the Horchata flavor revolution, a Peen on Screen news update, a Peen on Waffles news update, "Die Now Having Prospered", Parker Bowman is Poster Blowout, "Don't", nerd news and even more! Sean and Cody exchange bonny Scotland for the steamy rainforests of Honduras as they set course for this Peter Weir-directed 1986 drama, The Mosquito Coast. When insufferable motormouth and probable Libertarian kook Ally Fox (Harrison Ford) decides to move his long-suffering family (Helen Mirren, River Phoenix, Jadrien Steele et al.) to Central America to build a jumbo ice machine, Mother and the kids have little choice in the matter. But the harshness of life in the rainforest proves to be only the beginning of the family's troubles, especially when Ally's swelled head leads to some not-so-funny hijinx that nearly gets them all killed. Environmental issues discussed include the real-life history of the Miskitia region and its people, geothermal energy and climate change in Central America, intentional or “breakaway” communities, and our old friend the white savior complex, back for another bruising round. In what countries are the real Mosquito Coast and why did it prove to be such a burr up the bum of the British, Spanish and Americans throughout history? Are Central Americans really sitting on a fortune in geothermal energy, as claimed in the film? What, and where, is Gaviotas and what does it have to do with this movie? Remember that time Ron Paul's fans thought they were going to start their own town in the Texas desert where they wouldn't have to pay taxes? Can Harrison Ford convincingly portray an abusive father? How did this picture end up being part of a big deck of role-swapping Pokemon cards involving Harrison Ford, Jack Nicholson and Burt Reynolds? Why do Peter Bogdonavich and Paul Schrader always pop up whenever anyone starts doing cinema nerd white-guy takes on the importance of movies? Have you ever heard of Ninja brand chainsaws? "I talk with veteran actor, write, producer, and teacher on his life in the art of acting." Inside the Episode with Mitch Hampton: "The diverse group of guests on our podcast encompass both those I have never met and only know from their work in what you might consider a "public" sense. Then there are those guests whom I have had the good fortune to know personally. I have never gotten to know the actor Austin Pendleton in a personal manner but I know for sure my first conscious awareness of him was most probably from his role in the Peter Bogdonavich masterpiece What's Up Doc (1972), which I saw on the big screen at the age of six, with Barbara Streisand and Ryan O'Neal. I was not so fortunate to have seen his early 1970s musical or theatre work, yet it feel like I have seen him in so many television and movie productions as well as on Broadway (Doubles comes to mind from the 80s) and my now father produced his play Orson's Shadow, that I can confidently say that he has been such a large part of the world of both theaters, movies and t.v. that I feel that I grew up with him to the extent that one can group up with a "named actor." I never dreamed I would have had the opportunity to speak with him on this context in my own podcast. Austin Pendleton is, among many other things, what sometimes people call the real deal. He is one of the greatest living actors, period, regardless of genre or style of production. He is also beloved as a teacher of acting and playwright and director in his own right. It is always an honor to be able to talk to someone who cells at what they do artistically, especially if they are as generous as is Austin, as well a clear about his own life experiences and what they have meant to him.
