Kids. What is wrong with kids these days? They're not perfect like we were. It's musicals month and we've arrived at a 60s musical and the only musical Bob already saw prior to this month. This musical, inspired by Elvis getting drafted into the army, is a pop culture spoof and a launchpad for a young Ann-Margret who mesmerizes in this 1963 George Sidney adaptation of “BYE BYE BIRDIE”. A popular singer gets to kiss a small tawn girl in small town Ohio and if this works out then 5 or 6 people could be set for life! It's an extensive cast that also stars Dick Van Dyke as a speed dealer, Janet Leigh as a withered old marm, Bobby Rydell who is being cucked by a teen idol despite being one in real life, Paul Lynde as the perfect father and Maureen Stapleton as the perfect mother. It also stars Ed Sullivan as himself. A crafty musical comedy that rightly deserves its place as one of the great teen movies and the best movie ever featuring a turtle high on speed. JFK would be dead later this same year. Just thought I'd mention that. "The years hadn't softened Moronie. He continued to murder the English language, and anyone who got in his way. " 1982 may be The Year of Living Dangerously, but 1984 is most definitely the year of living Johnny Dangerously! This movie inhabits a special place in the realms of comedy, parody classics of the '80s. And the creative license taken on curse words has lived a quiet life of infamy in small groups of immature males for the last 39 years. Here's a roll call of how deep the cast runs. Michael Keaton, Joe Piscopo, Danny Devito, Marilu Henner, Maureen Stapleton, Peter Boyle, Griffin Dunne, Dom DeLuise, Glenno so Connor, Ray Walston, Alan Hale junior, Dick Butkus , Jack Nance, Bob Eubanks, Taylor Negron, and Joe Flaherty. You'll have to trust me that there are many more after reading that aggravatingly long list. Had to slip an adverb in here somehow.

Writer-director, Charlie Peters, was raised in New York City before spending his high school years at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, England, where he was classmates with the director Charles Sturridge and actor Edward Duke.  Charlie then studied theater at the University of Connecticut and subsequently received a Schubert Fellowship to do graduate work in playwriting at Carnegie Mellon University here in Pittsburgh.  While at CMU, his plays were acted by fellow students including Holly Hunter and Cherry Jones.  After graduating, he returned to New York to work as a playwright. His plays have been produced at La Mama Experimental Theatre Club, Primary Stages, Playwrights Horizons, The Actors Theater of Louisville and The Edinburgh Festival.  In 1978, Charlie was brought to Los Angeles by Columbia Pictures as part of a program looking for new writers, a program that turned out to be little more than a publicity stunt to distract from the bad PR Columbia had received as a result of its head, David Begelman, embezzling money from various actors.  Charlie's first produced movie, Paternity, is based on a play he'd written while at CMU. It starred Burt Reynolds and was directed by David Steinberg.  He's had a dozen other movies pr oduced including Blame It On Rio directed by Stanley Donen, Kiss Me Goodbye directed by Robert Mulligan, and Her Alibi, directed by Bruce Beresford. He's also directed two of his own: Passed Away with Bob Hoskins, Maureen Stapleton and Frances McDormand and Music From Another Room with Jude Law and Brenda Blethyn. Charlie has doctored over forty other produced movies and many more unproduced ones.  Renee Zellweger won The Golden Bear Award at The Berlin Film Festival for the 2010 movie, My One and Only, that Charlie wrote. Hs most recent film was 5 Flights Up based on the novel by Jill Ciment, which starred no less than Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton.

From the slums of Chicago to the hills of Hollywood, to legendary Carnegie Hall, award-winning actress, author, and teacher Susan Slavin has always triumphed over adversity.   Susan's story touched me deeply and affected me for days afterward. What she endured and overcame in her life is an inspiration to everyone. When you listen to her remarkable interview, stay tuned until the end – cry with her, rejoice with her. Born into abject poverty (one dinner roll to feed a family of six) and a family crippled by severe mental illness, Susan created miracles in her own life and the lives of others against all odds. Starting with her scholarship to the famed Chicago Art Institute at age 12, then following her dream of becoming an actress to Hollywood in her early teens, Susan quickly became a working actress, winning numerous awards. There, she was discovered by and worked with legendary director Jerome Robbins, (“A revelation…. the best actress I've come across.”).  He then summoned her to NYC where she built a critically acclaimed body of work, (“Stands out among the rest…” NY TIMES), as an actress in film, TV, and onstage.  She demonstrated great range in works from zany comedy to high drama, to the classics, and everything in between.  She played roles that stretched the gambit from innocence to worldly-wise---from the homeless, to proper professionals, to upscale high-style glamour.  She co-starred opposite such stars as Glenn Close, Martin Sheen, Jean Smart, Maureen Stapleton, and Burt Reynolds.

The Next Reel by The Next Reel Film Podcasts

Director Amy Heckerling obviously did something right with her first feature film, Fast Times at Ridgemont High. For Heckerling's second feature film, she had almost double the budget that she had before. Considering her second film was a period film, that likely helped. Now it may seem that Johnny Dangerously was a strange choice after her first film captured modern teens so well, but she clearly was tuned into young audiences. Perhaps the producer and studio felt she could carry a period parody and do it in such a way to bring in young audiences. The studio, Twentieth Century Fox, needed a hit after all. And while there were decisions made that date the film, we still find it works. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our 80s Comedy With Coolidge & Heckerling series with Heckerling's 1984 film Johnny Dangerously. Is there really much to talk about with Johnny Dangerously? You bet there is! We talk about the nature of parody films, why some work really well, and why this one may not have stood the test of time with some bigger ones like Airplane! and Blazing Saddles. All the same, we can't stop our effusive love for this film. That's likely because of the impressionable age we saw it. We think this is even more true after talking to our Discord community about it only to find many had never even heard of this film. The cast is bonkers. Michael Keaton. Joe Piscopo. Marilu Henner (theatre genius!). Peter Boyle. Maureen Stapleton. Griffin Dunne. Dom DeLuise. Danny DeVito. Ray Walston. Dick Butkus. Alan Hale Jr. Neal Israel. Jack Nance. Taylor Negron. Vincent Schiavelli. Richard Dimitri. And they all deliver. Especially Marilu Henner – what a voice! They're all clearly having fun and even when it's a big surprise to see someone like Stapleton in the film, it's clear she's having a good time. But what's with the 30s style eye makeup? Yeah, we get that it's meant to feel like we're watching a movie from the era, but it feels a bit strange when watching a color film. All the same, we don't really care too much about this. The script is chock full of laugh lines, meta humor, fourth wall breakage, and visual gags, and we laugh at most of them. It's damn funny! We're not sure why some people just don't click with it. When writing constant jokes in a script, though, you have to expect some are going to fall flat. But would it have all worked better with the original ending where Johnny dies? But seriously – what's with the weird bull joke? It took us forever, but while we were recording, we found the source Schlitz Malt Liquor ad campaign on YouTube to help make the joke make more sense. This leads to a whole conversation about the nature of timed jokes vs. timeless ones, and why jokes that are so key to the era may fall completely flat if you don't know the reference point. (All the same, check out some of the Schlitz Malt Liquor Bull commercials in our show notes. They're bonkers! Kevin Kline even turns up on one as Robin Hood!) Was this the film that saved Fox from certain bankruptcy at the end of the year? Okay, maybe that's putting a bit too much on this one film but its box office success certainly was welcome for the studio that had been struggling all year. Last but not least, what are your feelings about “Weird” Al Yankovic? He's been around for decades and whether you like his stuff or not, it's hard to argue that he's not cranking out some very clever work. His title song in this film is a lot of fun! #47 - Erik Liberman: The Near Death Experience

Happy Pride! "Ultimately, I think our job as artists is to share the secrets of our heart so that others may be set free... saving our own lives so that others can save theirs." Erik Liberman soothes the soul, simple as that. Whether or not it's his voice, his charm, his talent, or his point of view, Erik makes the world better for other people.  “It's not enough to want to make it, you've got to have something to make it with,” is a quote he holds near and dear. After the experience of seeing Chita Rivera in Kiss of the Spider Woman, and having said that to Erik, it kept him focused and able to hang in the industry and build success; a concept we touch on in this episode paired with failure.  Whenever interacting with someone, Erik tries to hold a vision for who someone was and who they will be. In a place of presence, it not only meets them in the now, but it extends forward and backwards. “We seek to be drawn from the plague of linear time into an encounter of infinity,” he says. “And that's why with great stars they say they stopped time.” Erik is also a survivor of a near death experience, which has informed his artistry. “What I realized was the thing that everything was fearing: death, was the wrong place to put the focus,” he says. “The place to put the focus is on utilizing the time one has in the body to do what one came for.” In this episode, Erik provides incredibly useful insight and tools on how the multi-hyphenate experience helps us understand the ecosystem of show business as a whole. You'll also hear us touch on the concept of vulnerability, weaponizing vulnerability, near death experiences, dignity & alignment, existentialism, commercial theatre, activism, and the discipline to sit down with yourself and create something that is bigger than you.  "Multifaceted, irreducible, and astonishing." - Joan Juliet Buck, former editor-in-chief of French Vogue Mentored by Maureen Stapleton, named a YoungArts winner in high school, and trained at London's Complicité and National Theatre, where he came under the wing of Dame Judi Dench. He received a grant to study with master clown teacher Philippe Gaulier in France, and in Los Angeles, was the face of noted improv-and-sketch-comedy school, The Groundlings. Liberman was "discovered" by 21-time Tony Award winning director and producer Hal Prince as a winner of the Lotte Lenya Competition. Prince hired him for his Broadway debut in Lovemusik, written by Oscar winner Alfred Uhry and starring Tony winners Donna Murphy and Michael Cerveris, remarking of the actor, "Erik is the real deal. Once you've seen him, you can't forget him." Liberman went on to receive Helen Hayes, Ovation, Garland, and Connecticut Critics Circle Awards, his onstage work reviewed as "a showcase of sheer star power." He originated the roles of The Telephone Guy in the award-winning Band's Visit opposite Tony Shalhoub, Charles Revson opposite Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole in War Paint, and Clopin in Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz, and Peter Parnell's The Hunchback of Notre Dame.  Other theatre highlights include: Motel the Tailor in Fiddler opposite Harvey Fierstein and the film's star, Topol. Some television credits include: Amazon's Transparent, Modern Family, and Martin Scorsese's Vinyl, and he will soon appear in the film American Dream.  Liberman has contributed to books including Performance of the Century, Wisdom From an Empty Mind, and Luminous Life. His master class series, Bridge to Broadway, benefited 45 charities and earned him a 2020 Encore Award from The Actors Fund, and he is currently developing a new book, documentary, and series for television.  For more information, please visit www.erikliberman.org and follow @erikliberman. In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 1985 American science-fiction comedy-drama film directed by Ron Howard. The story of the film revolves around a group of elderly residents from a retirement community in St. Petersburg, Florida, who start to feel rejuvenated after spending time in the swimming pool within the grounds of the house next door to their retirement home - which unbeknownst to them is being rented by four peaceful aliens (disguised as Humans) from the planet Antarea who have returned to Earth - upon which they had an outpost 10,000 years before - to retrieve twenty of their kin who were encased within rock-looking cocoons that now lie upon the ocean floor, which when retrieved are placed within the same swimming pool that the elderly residents enjoy swimming in, which, also unbeknownst to the elderly residents, has been charged with a "life force" that has many rejuvenating benefits for both Antarean and human biology. The film stars Don Ameche as Art Selwyn, Wilford Brimley as Ben Luckett, Hume Cronyn as Joe Finley, Brian Dennehy as Walter, Jack Gilford as Bernie Lefkowitz, Steve Guttenberg as Jack Bonner, Maureen Stapleton as Mary Luckett, Jessica Tandy as Alma Finley, Gwen Verdon as Bess McCarthy, Herta Ware as Rose Lefkowitz, Tahnee Welch as Kitty, Barret Oliver as David, as well as many other wonderful actors as some wonderfully memorable characters. And the memorable and beautiful soundtrack of the film was composed by the late-great film composer James Horner. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

We needed hearts, not diamonds! We watched The Fan (1981) with the very funny Jeff Nelson and we could use a warm cup of High Point coffee!  Lauren Bacall plays a Broadway actress with an obsessive fan played by Michael Biehn who may, or may not be a closet-case (spoiler alert: he totally is).  A pre-Terminator (sexy as hell) Biehn spends the movie typing explicit letters to Sally Ross (Bacall) but is rejected at every turn.  Maureen Stapleton as Sally’s no-nonsense secretary and James Garner as Sally’s would-be love interest round out the cast and when the three of them shared the screen I could smell the second hand smoke from their voices alone. The play within the movie is the most homosexual thing I’ve seen in a long time - and this is the same movie with Michael Biehn jumping into a YMCA pool in his boxer shorts. GET YOUR PHANTOM TINGLES READY! We are watching 1988's total fever dream of a movie "Doin' Time On Planet Earth". Join The Cannon Canon bros as they half-remember watching it as a child and marvel at the total lost comedic genius of Adam West. As well as ask all the right questions about this almost unavailable lost "possible punk classic" of a movie. Questions like "Did Darren Star bury this movie post his 90210/Sex and the City fame? Is there some hidden connection between Doin Time and "Teen Wolf? Why would you make a movie about the B-52's and never have them show up? And the question we are all asking ourselves...How did Maureen Stapleton end up in this movie? How did we miss Roddy McDowall as the minister?! And many more. "I talk with veteran actor, write, producer, and teacher on his life in the art of acting." Inside the Episode with Mitch Hampton: "The diverse group of guests on our podcast encompass both those I have never met and only know from their work in what you might consider a "public" sense. Then there are those guests whom I have had the good fortune to know personally. I have never gotten to know the actor Austin Pendleton in a personal manner but I know for sure my first conscious awareness of him was most probably from his role in the Peter Bogdonavich masterpiece What's Up Doc (1972), which I saw on the big screen at the age of six, with Barbara Streisand and Ryan O'Neal. I was not so fortunate to have seen his early 1970s musical or theatre work, yet it feel like I have seen him in so many television and movie productions as well as on Broadway (Doubles comes to mind from the 80s) and my now father produced his play Orson's Shadow, that I can confidently say that he has been such a large part of the world of both theaters, movies and t.v. that I feel that I grew up with him to the extent that one can group up with a "named actor." I never dreamed I would have had the opportunity to speak with him on this context in my own podcast. Austin Pendleton is, among many other things, what sometimes people call the real deal. He is one of the greatest living actors, period, regardless of genre or style of production. He is also beloved as a teacher of acting and playwright and director in his own right. It is always an honor to be able to talk to someone who cells at what they do artistically, especially if they are as generous as is Austin, as well a clear about his own life experiences and what they have meant to him. " Austin's Bio Austin has appeared on, off and off-off Broadway, in such productions as The Diary of Anne Frank (with Natalie Portman), Fiddler on the Roof (the original cast, with Zero Mostel), Doubles (with Ron Leibman), Educating Rita (with Laurie Metcalf), Mother Courage (with Meryl Streep), Romeo and Juliet (with Lauren Ambrose), The Last Sweet Days of Isaac (for which he won an Obie and a Drama Desk Award), Hail Scrawdyke (for which he won the Clarence Derwent Award, a production directed by Alan Arkin), and in such roles as Richard III, Richard II, Hamlet, Uncle Vanya, Shylock and many others. He is also an Ensemble member at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago and has acted and directed there and in many other regional theatres. He has acted in over 100 film and television shows. Film credits include My Cousin Vinny, A Beautiful Mind, 2 Days in the Valley, Finding Nemo, Searching for Bobby Fisher, Catch-22, The Muppet Movie, and many more. Television credits include Homicide, Oz, Law and Order, Life on Mars, Miami Vice and many other shows. His Broadway directing credits include Spoils of War, The Runner Stumbles, and a Tony nomination for directing Elizabeth Taylor and Maureen Stapleton in The Little Foxes. His three plays (all published and all widely produced) are Orson's Shadow, Uncle Bob, and Booth; he has also written the book for a new musical called A Minister's Wife, in 2009 at Writers' Theatre in Glencoe, Illinois, and scheduled for production next spring at Lincoln Center in NY. He is the star of Everyone's Carol, as Ebenezer Scrooge. He teaches acting at HB Studio in New York. Discuss on Reddit ➤ Support the Show ➤ Hey half-bloods, have we got a show for you! This time we are heading on a journey across America with everyone’s favourite demigod, Percy Jackson as we explore ‘The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical.’ Jimi and Tommy work out why this show is so faithful to the source material, analyse the many different characters in the show and discuss the fallout from the recent Broadway reviews, and why it may highlight a bigger systemic issue in the world of theatre critics. The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical (Original Cast Recording) Amazon / Spotify  If you, like us, have never delved into the Percy Jackson books then there’s no time like the present! Jimi just picked up his copy from his local second-hand book store but you can get yours here!  There are a plethora of musical adaptations from books, but what ones have caused as much fan dedication as the Lightning Thief? Were there people who were devastated at the changes in Wicked from Gregory Maguire’s books? What series would you be wildly protective over if they ever made a musical adaptation of it? Let us know on Twitter! Here’s an incredible roundup of all of the fallout from the Lightning Thief’s Broadway opening by Alexandra Middlemitch. If you missed Peter and the Starcatcher when it was on Broadway then check out this featurette from Playbill which gives you an idea of its incredible staging. ISSUES! Where does the opening sit? Is it a parody? Is it sincere? Is it a send-up of this SNL sketch? Always a fan of a literary recommendation, if you’re approaching or have reached your thirties and you worry you’ve forgotten what it was like to be a child - check out ‘The Ocean at the End of the Lane’ by Neil Gaiman. The Lightning Thief Twitter account (Mx. The ramblings of someone out of touch or a vital critique of the show?  If you’re a writer or wannabe writer then check out Buzzfeed’s Style Guide for how to do it properly in the 21st century. A Sexy Quiz Question According to legend, at the wrap party for the movie adaptation of this musical, either Maureen Stapleton or Paul Lynde stood up and said to one of the leading female actresses, “I want you to know that I’m the only person who worked on this film who doesn’t want to f**k you!”

In episode 021, we chat with Austin Pendleton, critically acclaimed actor, director, and playwright who has worked with reputable artists such as Meryl Streep, Ethan Hawke, Natalie Portman, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Austin shares with us his story of humble beginnings in his small hometown in Ohio, putting up plays with his family and friends, all the way to his Broadway career and what he learned along the way. He teaches us the value that acting can have on a person and, though the lifestyle comes with its fair share of ups and downs, it is exhilarating. Austin Pendleton is a playwright, actor, director, teacher, and a Steppenwolf ensemble member since 1987. He received critical acclaim in 1964 for his performance as Motel in the original Broadway cast of “Fiddler on the Roof.” He appeared in “The Last Sweet Days of Isaac” (for which he won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance and an Obie Award), “The Diary of Anne Frank,” “Goodtime Charley,” and “Up from Paradise” as well as many other plays. In August 2006, Pendleton played the Chaplain in Bertolt Brecht’s “Mother Courage and Her Children” with Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline in the Public Theater production. As a director, Pendleton has worked extensively on and off-Broadway. His direction of Elizabeth Taylor and Maureen Stapleton in Lillian Hellman’s “The Little Foxes” garnered him a Tony Award nomination. Additional directing credits include “Between Riverside and Crazy,” “Uncle Vanya,” “Three Sisters,” “Ivanov,” and “Hamlet,” all at Classic Stage Company in New York. He has made over 100 appearances in television and film. His film work is as diverse as “A Beautiful Mind,” “Mr. & Mrs. Bridge” and “The Muppet Movie.” In 2007, Austin Pendleton received a Special Award for his contributions to American theater at the 52nd Annual Drama Desk Awards. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/relate-patrick-mcandrew/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/relate-patrick-mcandrew/support

Rydell High, that is – the name of the school where Danny Zuko and Sandy reunite, where the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies rule the roost. As many times I have watched that movie over the years, it never clicked that calling the fictional institution “Rydell High School” was a tribute to America’s most famous Rydell – Bobby. BOBBY RYDELL podcast excerpt: "When I was with Mr. Sinatra at the Copacabana for the first time and he said, 'What do you drink, Robert?' I said, 'C-C-Coke.' I figured if I said, 'Scotch and water,' I'd get smacked in the face, y'know?" Pretty cool – even if it was his pal Frankie Avalon who played the film’s Teen Angel, not him. After all, South Philly’s gift to teen pop and adult cool, Bobby Rydell, has enjoyed more than his share of fame and fortune. There were the hits, none bigger than “Volare.” And, of course, co-starring in the film version of Bye Bye Birdie with Dick Van Dyke and Ann-Margaret.
