In this episode, the FAQ is: How can I take a walking tour when I arrive in a city? . Today's Destination is: Chattanooga, Tennessee Today's Misstep- Getting stopped by TSA security Travel Advice: Plan for the unexpected   FAQ:  How can I get the walking tour when I get to a city?   Response: A guided walking tour of a city is a treat for a solo traveler, especially for a woman who is interested in its history.   The more popular ones are through platforms like Viator, TripAdvisor, Airbnb, and FreeWalkingtoursbylocals.com, but there are many ways to score a tour from someone who truly cares about the experience for you.  Be sure to read the reviews and book in advance during a busy season. Some are free, and suggest a tip at the end if you liked it. Your hotel could also gook you a tour. The Visitor Center or Tourism office can also give you guidance on this. You may also find a walking tour app for a self-guided tour, with maps and points of interest. You can GPS my city or check Detour. I found some walking tours on YouTube that were pretty fun to watch also.   https://freewalkingtoursbylocals.com/ Today's destination: Chattanooga, Tennessee My first visit here was in 1974, on a bus of young women heading to Florida. It was called Junior Trip. We were 80 women, two bus loads. I remember very little about Chattanooga from that visit. I returned to see it in 2024, which made a more significant impression. This time, I was visiting the future Dr. Travelbest, who lives there now. We are currently working on a Planner for travel guidance, so look for that in the future. It's a central travel hub, especially for the railroads. A bridge crosses the railroad tracks, which are dozens of tracks wide. It may be one of the largest railroad hubs that I have experienced. You can see the city and the Moccasin Bend from the infamous Lookout Mountain. Listen to the episode on Chickamauga to learn about President Abraham Lincoln's campaign to gain control of the South in the 1860s. It was a place of both Confederate and Union victories. https://www.visitchattanooga.com/things-to-do/ https://www.visitchattanooga.com/plan/transportation/   The Zoo was a highlight, with a giraffe named George gladly accepting lunch from my hands to his 18-inch tongue. It seems that George loves romaine lettuce. Who would have guessed that? That experience was a treat. Kids like it, too. An assortment of other animals makes for a few hours of seeing wildlife at the Chattanooga Zoo. Walk across the Pedestrian Bridge and the riverfront along the Tennessee River to get a flavor of the city. I walked the bridge at night, and it was a sparkling river with no watercraft because the weather was rainy and threatened winds. The Northshore District has trendy boutiques, galleries, and food choices; you can walk everywhere. You can also learn much about the Civil War from an organized guided walking tour of the area. I did get to see the historic train station, the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Parts of the terminal building were recently sold, so check the show notes for the latest. https://www.local3news.com/local-news/preserve-chattanooga-sells-part-of-chattanooga-choo-choo-complex/article_a8d7781e-dbe5-11ee-abba-0b98f22b8f70.html I also enjoyed Ruby Falls and will create a special episode about that destination soon. On my next visit, I plan to Explore the Tennessee Aquarium and dive into the fascinating world of marine life at one of the top-rated aquariums in the country. From river otters to penguins, the Tennessee Aquarium showcases various aquatic animals. I did a few hikes on this trip, but most of the days, it rained, so I will return and hike more. Chattanooga is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. You can go hiking on nearby trails like Stringers Ridge or Raccoon Mountain or try rock climbing at the Tennessee Wall, if you have that talent, or just go and watch the climbers. Next time I come, I may also Attend a Performance at the Tivoli Theatre: Catch a show at the beautifully restored Tivoli Theatre, which hosts concerts, Broadway shows, and ballets. My last item on the next time list is to Relax at Coolidge Park: Spend a leisurely afternoon at Coolidge Park, located along the riverfront. Picnic in the grass, ride the antique carousel, or simply enjoy the scenic views. Today's Misstep- Getting stopped by TSA security How did I know that carrying a squash in my bag would keep me from getting through security the first time? It took an extra five minutes to get my bag checked. And then I did it again. I brought a squash on a second trip, and TSA stopped me for a short while Next time, don't bring fresh squash on the trip in your carry on. Today's Travel Advice- Plan for the unexpected. There's no such thing as being fully prepared, so prepare for what could happen, and in your mind how you may deal with that. In this episode: FAQ: What do you do when a significant change in weather interrupts your travel?   Destination: Osaka, Japan Today's Mistake- My global entry card has my name wrong. Travel Advice:  Use AI when planning your next trip FAQ: A Facebook group member asked us, “What do you do when a significant change in weather interrupts your travel?” Answer: Unexpected weather changes are not uncommon, but they can still pose a challenge when traveling, especially when solo. If I were faced with a sudden shift from sunny and warm to rainy and cold weather while on a trip, I would adapt my plans to make the most of the situation. I would check for appropriate clothing to stay warm and dry in inclement weather, including wearing layers of sweaters, jackets, waterproof outerwear, and sturdy shoes that can withstand wet conditions. Keeping myself comfortable and protected from the elements would be my top priority. You check your notes and look for indoor activities or attractions. Instead of outdoor activities, I would explore museums, art galleries, historical sites, or cozy cafes to enjoy a warm drink and engage in leisurely activities like reading or people-watching.  If the rain isn't too heavy and I'm feeling adventurous, I might also consider embracing the elements and going for a scenic drive to admire the beauty of the landscape shrouded in mist and rain. Exploring coastal areas or scenic routes known for their dramatic views could offer a unique perspective and create memorable moments despite the gloomy weather. I recently visited Ruby Falls in Chattanooga, and the waterfalls were even better since it was raining. By maintaining a positive attitude and adapting to the circumstances, you can turn an unexpected rainy day into an opportunity for unexpected discoveries and new experiences. Today's destination: Osaka, Japan After being in the country for a while, I flew from Sapporo to Osaka, Japan. I found some castles, temples, and day trips from here. Osaka, Japan, offers a wealth of experiences for solo travelers, including  Visiting Osaka Castle, one of Japan's most iconic landmarks. Explore the castle grounds, gardens, and museum, and learn about the region's history. Stroll Through Dotonbori: Experience the vibrant atmosphere of Dotonbori, Osaka's bustling entertainment district. Stroll along the canal, admire the neon lights and sample local street food. Discover Japan's oldest official temples in Osaka. Explore the temple, gardens, and pagoda, and soak in the serene atmosphere. Osaka is known as the "Kitchen of Japan" and is famous for its delicious street food and local specialties. Try savory pancakes), (octopus balls), and sushi, of course. Treat yourself to a relaxing spa day at Spa World, one of Osaka's largest and most famous hot spring complexes. Enjoy soaking in various themed baths, saunas, and relaxation areas. Dive into Osaka's past at the Osaka Museum of History. Explore exhibits showcasing the city's cultural heritage, including scale models of historic buildings and interactive displays. Consider taking a day trip from Osaka to nearby destinations such as Kyoto, Nara, or Kobe. These cities offer unique attractions and are easily accessible by train from Osaka. On my next visit to Osaka, here are some things I would like to do. 1. Spend time shopping in Shin-sai-bashi, Osaka's premier shopping district. Explore the countless shops, department stores, and boutiques, and pick souvenirs or gifts. 2. Take a River Cruise: Enjoy a scenic river cruise along the Okawa River, which runs through the heart of Osaka. Relax onboard a sightseeing boat and admire the city's skyline and landmarks from the water. 3. Experience Traditional Theater: Attend a traditional Japanese performance such as kabuki or bunraku puppetry. Check local listings for performances and venues offering English subtitles or explanations. 4. Explore one of the world's largest aquariums, Osaka Aquarium Kai-yu-kan, and marvel at its impressive marine life exhibits. Highlights include the Pacific Ocean tank and the interactive touch pools.   Today's Mistake- My Global Entry card has the wrong name for me. When you get your card, check the data carefully. My screening went well, but the admin spelled my name wrong on the card. I didn't notice until I got home; it was too late to fix that. So, I hope to get it right next time. I just was notified that my card expires soon, so I am trying to get it fixed. Don't make my mistake. Check right away. Today's Travel Advice-Use AI when planning your next trip If you are a solo traveler and want to see what others recommend you visit, check out one of many AI tools to see some suggested itineraries.  Chat GPT from Open Ai gave me the following advice, which I have edited. First, I asked it to give me three main reasons why a woman in her 60s would use Chat GPT to help her with travel. Those three main reasons are personalized guidance and support, travel insights, and safety with security advice. I think these are good to dive into a bit here. I use AI in many daily activities, especially if they are not critical. I use it to create songs and even a clone of my voice. So here are a few reasons to use AI in your next travel planning. When you plan a solo trip, you can get the perspective you asked for, precisely what you wanted, in seconds. If you are seeking a destination recommendation, you will find it, whether it's for senior-friendly accommodations, accessible hiking trails, or safety tips for traveling outside of a tour group. If you are looking for transportation options, cultural norms, or local customs, you can ask ChatGPT for insights. You also can ask for tips on avoiding scams, staying vigilant in crowded areas, and navigating unfamiliar surroundings. But be sure to get clarity on any hallucinations because ChatGPT has been known to make some big mistakes. Don't believe everything you read. You can always ask Dr. Travelbest for help. Please join author / actress Deborah Goodrich Royce for An Author's Afternoon in The Locher Room. Daytime fans will recognize Deborah from All My Children where she played Silver Kane, the sister of the legendary Erica Kane. Deborah will be here to discuss her second novel, Ruby Falls. Deborah made her debut as an author in 2019 with Finding Mrs. Ford. She also worked as a story editor for Miramax Films, and was instrumental in the development of such films as Emma, The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain, and A Wrinkle in Time. With her husband, she restored and reopened the Avon Film Center, a 1939 landmark in Stamford, CT, which now operates as a not-for-profit dedicated to independent, classic, foreign, and documentary films.RUBY FALLS:On July 12, 1968, six-year-old Ruby suffered a shattering loss: her father. She remembers holding his hand and trying heartily not to be afraid while standing in the pitch-black dark, with the sound of roaring water and feel of dank air surrounding her. They were in a cave—in the middle of a clump of tourists visiting Ruby Falls in Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Then, Ruby remembers her Daddy letting go of her hand... and disappearing. How could a full-grown man simply vanish—and worse, abandon his little girl, his own flesh and blood child? Yes, that terrible day and the mystery of what happened to her father took a toll. But, with the help of her strong, devoted mother and therapy, that little girl survived—and vowed to leave Ruby behind. Transformed into Eleanor Russell, she finds fame in her early 20s as a daytime soap opera star in New York City. Then, on the cusp on her 26th birthday, she loses her job over some sort of controversy. To avoid publicity, Eleanor flees to Rome and, after a whirlwind six-week romance, returns home with a dashing husband, Orlando Montague. The son of an English aristocrat and Chinese refugee, Orlando is an antiques dealer—like her Daddy was. Determined to start anew in Los Angeles, Eleanor finds and snaps up a storybook cottage in the Hollywood Hills. She lands a plum role—the lead in a remake of Rebecca, keeping all the mystery of Hitchcock's rendition of Daphne Du Maurier's classic, but revamping up the horror. With the perfect husband, perfect home, and perfect career boost, Eleanor should be perfectly happy. And she is—or so, she keeps telling herself—even when Orlando begins acting “unkind,” at best.Keeping the tension mounting and the shockers coming, Ruby Falls follows Eleanor as she begins to suspect that her perfect husband is a liar with sinister motives. Then, her work on the set of a chilling movie starts to blur with her life at home. Is Eleanor trapped in a dangerous marriage? Or is the horror and pain of her childhood coming back to destroy her? You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that despite painting a legendary portrait of George Washington, Rhode Island painter Gilbert Stuart was a loyalist and departed for England in 1775 to escape the revolution? He wouldn't return to America until 1793 after the United States had won independence. Now, here are a few events today that we're looking forward to. At 10 am this morning join Miss Chamoni at the Clark Memorial Library for a virtual story hour for kids. Head over to clarklib.org to register and receive your invite. The Westerly Library is hosting a virtual author talk with Deborah Royce. She'll be discussing her upcoming novel, Ruby Falls, followed by a Q&A. Deborah's first novel, Finding Mrs. Ford, debuted in 2019 to rave reviews and she sits on a number of local boards (and even restored the Ocean House Hotel). Reserve your spot at the library's website, or by emailing awagner@westerlylibrary.org for your invitation.  Looking for a new role? We're here to help. Today's Job posting comes from the The Wine Store in Westerly. They're looking for a part-time cashier. Experience and a high school degree are preferred. Pay starts at $12.00 per hour and must be great with customers. If you'd like to learn more or apply, you can do so by using the link in our episode description.  https://www.indeed.com/l-Westerly,-RI-jobs.html?advn=2763303157644200&vjk=d249143ca2a13f8d Today we're remembering the life of Brenda Jean Choquette-Wisehart, 57 of Middleburg, FL. Brenda was born in Westerly and was a student at Stonington High School and friends to many. Brenda worked for many years in the restaurant industry including D'Angelo's Restaurant and The Pizza Lady of Pawcatuck. Brenda is survived by her daughter and son, her husband, her siblings, and her grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives who loved her dearly. Memorial Donations may be made to Brain Injury Alliance of Connecticut on her behalf. A celebration of her life is scheduled for Saturday May 22, 2021 at the Calabrese Club in Westerly. Friends and Family are welcome to attend. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Brenda's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! The Wits’ End Podcast returns with its first 2021 episode! It’s been almost a year since the legendary Ann Nocenti’s first appearance on the podcast. This time around, we dive into her new Dark Horse Comics release— The Seeds (with art by David Aja). The bees are swarming. What do they know that we don't? In a broken-down world, a rebellious group of ruthless romantics have fled a tech-obsessed society to create their own& and a few cantankerous aliens have come to harvest the last seeds of humanity. When one of them falls in love with a human, idealistic journalist Astra stumbles into the story of a lifetime, only to realize that if she reports it, she'll destroy the last hope of a dying planet. How far will she go for the truth? We go into the history of the book, reasons behind the delay, clickbait culture, conspiracy theories, visual language in Akira Kurosawa’s movies, her experience working with the great Denny O’Neil, writing comics vs. filmmaking & more.

Tuckaleechee Caverns is known as “The Greatest Site Under the Smokies.” And why not? It is the home of the tallest subterranean waterfall in America, at 210 feet. Ruby Falls, in nearby Chattanooga, claims to be the tallest, however, it is a mere 145 feet (wink, wink). On the plus side, visitors to Ruby Falls can actually see more of the waterfall there than you can at Tuckaleechee Caverns. Even so, Tuckaleechee Caverns is a wonderful attraction and well worth your time. The cavern is not about the waterfall, it is about the whole cave experience. Some of the interesting things you will see are massive stalactites, stalagmites, a “bear” rock formation, a wishing pool, and a fresh water stream flowing through the caverns with water clean enough to drink. At one end of the cave is a room large enough to hold a football field at 400′ x 300′ and 150′ deep. You can enjoy exploring Tuckaleechee Caverns with your entire family.A gift shop at the entrance is full of fun stuff you will want to take home. The t-shirts and ball caps are some of our favorites.Marc and Ann also visited The Chocolate B'ar, a great little shop selling homemade chocolates, coffee, and soft drinks in Townsend. Wander On Linger Often. The perfect life philosophy for Chattanooga, Tennessee and its beer and adventure scene. With the Tennessee River, the Appalachian Mountains, the Cumberland Gap, and so much more, this city is not one to miss on your travels to the South. For those of you that feel you need to earn your beer, that is not a problem here. From mountain biking and hiking to paddle boarding, kayaking, rafting, hiking, and climbing, there's something for everyone. Then you've got the famous (or infamous) Rock City, Ruby Falls, the Incline Railway at Lookout Mountain, Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park, and the entire town of Chattanooga to keep you busy exploring. Thirsty, yet? I am. So we wandered...into several breweries, several restaurants, and even a distillery while here. One of our favorite places was WanderLinger Brewing Company. Because of the beer, of course, but more because of the story behind the beer. Brothers, Chris and Mike Dial opened WanderLinger in 2018 and have become a pillar in their community, hosting art showings, live music, and always a welcoming smile. Loving the range of outdoor activities as much as we do, it was nice to sit, drink, and chat with Mike Dial, about many of the things we love in live: beer, the outdoors, and travel. Granted this original interview with Mike was about a year ago; however, even amidst a pandemic Mike and Chris plan on lingering in Chattanooga for quite awhile, keeping all of us wandering back. ---------- Want More? ---------- For all the places we went, beer we drank, resources, and more when we visited Chattanooga and WanderLinger Brewing Company, check out the show notes at Living a Stout Life ( https://livingastoutlife.com/ ) ---------------- Connect With Us: ---------------- The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life ( https://livingastoutlife.com/ ) , where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. She has had a hand in telling and editing the stories of the Uncanny X-Men and New Mutants during the Chris Claremont era, Spider-Woman, Daredevil, Catwoman, Green Arrow and more. (Her Daredevil and Kid Eternity series are my favorite ‘superhero’ books she’s worked on —Shah) Aside from her Big 2 work, Nocenti continues to be a fearless creator and is the writer/co-creator of The Seeds and Ruby Falls from Dark Horse’s Berger Books imprint. These books are unique and are must-reads for long time and new comics fans. In this episode, Nocenti talks to Shah Emami about breaking into comics, being mentored by Denny O’Neil at Marvel, picking up the reins of Daredevil after Frank Miller, going to Vertigo, working as a journalist and comic book writer, bringing her Ruby Falls and The Seeds series to life at Dark Horse through Berger Books, mentoring up and coming creators and a lot more. This Norwegian Folk Tale is being presented especially for this harsh winter and in preparation for the windy March to come. It involves a motif common to many folktales: a young traveler is taken advantage of by an innkeeper twice, but the third time proves the charm. We come to you from Chattanooga, TN, having made our way from Charleston, SC., where we saw the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley (the first submarine to sink a ship in battle, which occurred in 1864) and the Charleston Tea Plantation (the only tea plantation in North America). From there, we went to Atlanta, and saw the former home of Margaret Mitchell, a pioneering female journalist and author of the classic novel "Gone With the Wind". We also toured the Center for Puppetry Arts, which showcases puppets old and new from all over the world, ranging from shadow puppets to puppets constructed from found materials to classics like Punch and Judy to the latest hight-tech animatronic contraptions. Needless to say, there is a great deal of coverage of the extraordinary career of Jim Henson. Just west of Georgia is the rustic retreat of Historic Banning Mills, which has a fantastic zip-lining course, and we were blissfully walking and zipping along among the clouds (almost) for several hours. And here in Chattanooga, we've toured two caves (Ruby Falls and Raccoon Mountain) and the famous Rock City, and took a ride up (a mile up) the side of Lookout Mountain on the Chattanooga Incline Railway. And oh yes, how could we pass up the International Towing and Recovery Museum? Happy Listening!
