EPISODE 76 - “MEMORABLE OSCAR SPEECHES OF THE GOLDEN ERA OF HOLLYWOOD” - 2/24/2025 Winning an Oscar is a dream for most people who work in Hollywood. But you can't just win the Oscar, you have to have a good speech once your name is called and you head to the podium. There have been some great ones — OLIVIA COLEMAN's funny and cheeky speech hit the right tone and who can forget JACK PALANCE's one-arm push-ups or CUBA GOODING's exuberance? There have also been some bad ones — don't we all still cringe a little at SALLY FIELDS' “You like me” speech? As we prepare to celebrate the 97th annual Academy Award ceremony, Steve and Nan look back on some of their favorite Oscar speeches and why they resonate. So put on your tux, don the gown and jewels, pop the champagne, and join us for a fun talk about … well, people talking.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: “Five Times The Oscars Made History,” January 20, 2017, www.nyfa.edu; “Hollywood History: How World War II Forced the Academy to Rethink the 1942 Oscars,” April 16, 2021, Entertainment Weekly; “Charlie Chaplin vs. America Explores the Accusations that Sent a Star Into Exile,” October 24, 2023, byTerry Gross, www.npr.com; “The Most Memorable Oscar Speeches in Oscar History,” March 6, 2024, by Shannon Carlin, www.time.com;   Wikipedia.com; TCM.com; IMDBPro.com; www.Oscars.org; Movies Mentioned:  Stella Dallas (1938), starring Barbara Stanwyck, John Boles, Anne Shirley, & Alan Hale; Gone With The Wind (1939), starring Vivian Leigh, Clark Gable, Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Howard, Hattie McDaniel, Butterfly McQueen, Thomas Mitchell, & Barbara O'Neil; How Green Was My Valley (1941), starring Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O'Hara, & Donald Crisp; Sergeant York (1941), starring Gary Cooper, Joan Leslie, & Walter Brennan;  The Devil and Miss Jones (1941), staring Jean Arthur Robert Cummings, & Charle Coburn; Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941), starring Robert Montgomery, Claude Rains, & Evelyn Keyes; Ball of Fire (1942), starring Barbara Stanwyck & Cary Cooper; Double Indemnity (1944), starring Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray & Edward G Robinson; Key Largo (1948); starring Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Edward G Robinson, Claire Trevor, & Lionel Barrymore; All The King's Men (1948), starring Broderick Crawford, John Ireland, Joanne Dru, & Mercedes McCambridge; Pinky (1949), starring Jeanne Crain, Ethel Waters, Ethel Barrymore, Nina Mae McKinney, & Wiliam Lundigan; Marty (1955); starring Ernest Borgnine. EPISODE 71 - “STEVE & NAN's FAVORITE CLASSIC FILMS OF THE 1970s” - 1/20/2024 The 1970s was a decade that saw the rise of the auteur. Filmmakers like Scorsese, Coppola, Cassavetes, Altman, Lumet, and DePalma hit their stride and brought to the screen their specific vision and stylized films. This week, we discuss the first two films from acclaimed American director Peter Bogdanovich. The first is Targets (1968), a crime thriller starring Tim O'Kelly, Boris Karloff, Nancy Hsueh and Bogdanovich himself. The film depicts two parallel narratives which converge during the climax: one follows Bobby Thompson, a seemingly ordinary and wholesome young man who embarks on an unprovoked killing spree; the other depicts Byron Orlok, an iconic horror film actor who, disillusioned by real-life violence, is contemplating retirement. The second is The Last Picture Show (1971), a coming-of-age drama adapted from the 1966 semi-autobiographical novel by Larry McMurtry. The film's ensemble cast includes Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, Ellen Burstyn, Ben Johnson, Cloris Leachman and Cybill Shepherd. Set in a small town in northern Texas from November 1951 to October 1952, it is a story of two high school seniors and long-time friends, Sonny Crawford (Bottoms) and Duane Jackson (Bridges).   Timestamps What we've been watching (00:01:03) –  Anora, Juror #2, Scream, The Curse of Frankenstein, Hit Man Targets (00:23:30) The Last Picture Show (00:40:30) Coin toss (01:18:05)   Links Instagram - @callitfriendopodcast @munnywales @andyjayritchie   Letterboxd – @andycifpod @fat-tits mcmahon   Justwatch.com – streaming and rental links - https://www.justwatch.com

Let's review some more 70's movies now!
Today we start with
#1(Bloody Town Hall 1979) This documentary filmed in 1971 was a labor of love to edit and get it released by 79. This is a bloody mess that at least I found super interesting. BTH captures an important time, by way of an extremely odd event in NYC where Feminists take on Douchey Norman Mailer, a whole lotta chaos, and someone filmed it. NYC Gay Liberation Front members can be seen here for brief cameo. Other writers here of note are Germaine Greer, Diana Trilling, Jill Johnston, and Betty Friedman, to name a few.
#2 is (Johnny got his gun 1971). This book was read by anyone in high school who had a Vet for an English teacher. Author and director here was famous blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo, they made a bio pic about him with the meth making chemistry teacher from Breaking Bad. This films good and trippy, also extremely heavy and sad, also also METALLICA (listen to the song One for the plot). We love Donald Sutherland and he had just passed at the time of recording so we are slowly goin through the few DS films that we haven't already reviewed or showcased. Timothy Bottoms, Kathy Fields, and massive character actor Peter Brocco are here, along with the guy who became a tree in Mr. Sycamore.
#3 (Badlands 1973) Ok this ones arty. The Dad of the guy from Platoon, and Carrie from Carrie star here. Carrie is groomed by the Apocalypse now guy to be with him and watch him play macho militia survivalist dude, after killing her father.
#4 (Last American Hero 1973)Before he owned a video arcade in Tron, the guy from King Kong who loves magic was a moonshiner turned Southern hick nascar racer. Gary Busey helps him here, as well as Geraldine Fitzgerald, Valerie Perrrine, and Ned Beatty.
#5 (Cassanova 1976) Donald Sutherland has Mr. Burns in the Simpson's Dracula parody hair here. Director here is the one and only Federico Fellini, and if you wanna read something funny, go to IMDB and check out his biography, unless someone changes it, it is one one the weirdest mini bio's I have ever read. Film looks stunning, but is it good? Well, our hot takes are ready.
#6 (north Dallas forty 1979) This film experienced some real big problems taking on Big Sports. It's foolish to think that it wouldn't be the same as taking on the mob or the government. This is based on a book from someone who was in it Peter Gent. I was bullied by jocks and organized sports fans as far back as I can remember. I seem to be missing the gene to enjoy pretending I play a role sporting events. I digress, because I could watch a movie about sports or a show about sports if it's good, and this is good. Nick Nolte, and Charles Durning are here, as well as the director of First Blood, where John Jay Rambo was once in charge of million dollar equipment and now he can't even get a job parking cars. Finally today we review another made for TV movie gem called
#7(The 5.20 an hour dream 1980) Alice from the hit TV show Alice is here and very good as Ellen a rad Mom who needs her car repaired and takes on patriarchy in the factory. Can these butts allow her to do a job she can do even though she is not a man?
As always thanks for listening and please give us the stars and a review, it can help peeps find the pod.

“How can you tell what's a dream or what's real when you can't even tell when you're awake or when you're asleep?”Dalton Trumbo's Controversial Anti-War ClassicIn 1971, blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo adapted his own 1939 anti-war novel Johnny Got His Gun for the big screen. The film marked Trumbo's directorial debut and only feature film as director. Set during World War I, the story follows a young American soldier who becomes a quadruple amputee after being hit by an artillery shell. Trumbo's powerful critique of war and its devastating effects on soldiers resonated strongly in the Vietnam War era. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the One-and-Done series with a conversation about Johnny Got His Gun.Locked-In Horror: A Haunting Tale of War's CasualtiesWe dive deep into the film's harrowing portrayal of Joe Bonham, played by Timothy Bottoms, as he struggles with his horrific injuries and loss of autonomy. The movie's exploration of disability rights and the dehumanization of wounded veterans sparks a thoughtful discussion. We examine how Trumbo's adaptation differs from his novel, particularly in its use of flashbacks and dream sequences to break up the claustrophobic hospital scenes. While we appreciate the film's powerful anti-war message, we debate the effectiveness of some of its more surreal elements.Other points of discussion include:• Timothy Bottoms' compelling performance as Joe Bonham• The impact of Jason Robards as Joe's father• Donald Sutherland's portrayal of Christ in dream sequences• The film's bleak ending and its emotional impact• Comparisons to other "locked-in" films like The Diving Bell and the Butterfly• Trumbo's transition from novelist to filmmakerA Thought-Provoking Journey Through War's AftermathJohnny Got His Gun remains a powerful and disturbing examination of war's human cost. While we found some aspects of the film more effective than others, we agree that it's an important work that continues to resonate decades after its release. Its unflinching look at the physical and psychological toll of combat makes it a challenging but worthwhile viewing experience. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. In Anarene, nothing really changes and we've all know plenty of Jacys and Duanes and Sonnys so some of the ups and downs in the 1971 film “The Last Picture Show” might be familiar to you. Directed by Peter Bogdanovich and co-written by Larry McMurtry who wrote the original novel. Filmed in Larry McMurty's home town of Archer Texas and launching several careers like Cybill Shepherd, Jeff Bridges and Timothy Bottoms and redefining the careers of others like Ben Johnson, Ellen Burstyn and Cloris Leachman. A straight shooting movie with no overflowing saccharine (well, maybe a dash) and not much animosity (well, maybe some). Small town flicks don't get much better than this. Which person in this movie is the most like you? Don't say Sam the Lion. There's not enough of those guys out there. You're probably a Billy. That's not meant to be an insult. Billy is the most innocent. Just be the Billy and stay out of traffic, ok? Book Vs. Movie: The Last Picture ShowThe Larry McMurtry 1966 Novel Vs. the 1971 Peter Bogdanovich Film The Margos put on a Texas-sized episode of Book vs. Movie with The Last Picture Show--both the 1966 novel by Larry McMurtry and the 1971 film by Peter Bogdanovich. Both tell the tale of lonely people living in a forgotten Texas city with barely enough room for their hopes and dreams. McMurtry was a native of Archer City, Texas, born in 1936. When he was young, his family did not own many books and relied on oral storytelling to pass the time. A graduate of both the University of North Texas and Rice University, he would go on to create the town of Thalia as a stand-in for his native land to become the “Thalia: A Texas Trilogy,” which includes Horseman, Pass By (adapted into the 1963 Hud,) Leaving for Cheyenne (adapted into the film Lovin' Molly in 1974) and 1966's The Last Picture Show. He would go on to win a Pulitzer Prize for Lonesome Dove, and his status as a top-notch writer and collector of antique books held throughout his life. The story of Sonny, Duane, Jacy, Ruth, Billy, and more would become a huge part of the film culture. The movie earned over $20 million at the box office on a small production budget and eight nominations for Academy Awards in 1972. It is listed in the United States National Film Registry. At the time of production, the town of Archer City (named Anarene in the film) was scandalized by both the book and the movie. By the time the 1990 sequel Texasville was filmed in the same location and most of the original cast, the town had forgiven them all for the risque material. So between the short story and movie--which did the Margos like better? Movie Geeks United's Adam Long programs the episode and joins the conversation to talk all about one of the great coming-of-age stories ever adapted. Starring Jeff Bridges, Cybill Sheperd, and Timothy Bottoms, the story follows the three as they near the end of their senior year of high school in the dying oil town of Anarene, Texas. All three come from different walks of life and their stories and lives are intrinsically linked by the ghost town that they all, unfortunately, call home. For more episodes of the Kulturecast along with many more podcasts that are guaranteed to be your new favorite audio obsession, check out Weirding Way Media at weirdingwaymedia.com.

Year two of Bloodhaus begins with President's Day and Peter Bogdanovich's anti-gun classic, Targets. And there's more! Our own Drusilla did the artwork for Criterion's new release for Targets. Go buy it right now! From wiki: “Targets is a 1968 American crime thriller film directed by Peter Bogdanovich, produced by Roger Corman, and written by Polly Platt and Bogdanovich, with cinematography by László Kovács.[2] The film depicts two parallel narratives which converge during the climax: one follows Bobby Thompson (Tim O'Kelly), a seemingly ordinary and wholesome young man who embarks on an unprovoked killing spree; the other depicts Byron Orlok (Boris Karloff in his last straight dramatic role), an iconic horror film actor who is disillusioned by real-life violence and is contemplating retirement.”Also mentioned: Creepy Gals, Poker Face, Knives Out, Death Trap, What Have You Done to Solange?, Columbo, Ghanaian movie posters, Cunk on Earth, The Harley Quinn Valentine's Special, Brett Goldstein, Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Marnie and ranking Hitchcock films, Roger Corman, Dick Miller, Polly Platt, Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, Karina Longworth, Paper Moon, What's Up Doc?, Last Picture Show, The Terror, Gus Van Sant's Elephant, Timothy Bottoms,  NEXT WEEK: Cure Creepy Gals: https://www.creepygals.com/ Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.com  Twitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.com        Drusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/  Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/  Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/        Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/  Joshua's Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoshuaConkel   Joshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/  Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel

Following the Oscars, Corey (@coreyrstarr) and Jonathan (@berkreviews) decided to pick an actor who they love but had major gaps in their viewing history. Thus, March's theme is Best Actor goes to Jeff Bridges! That's right, The Dude himself is our focus for Movie Club this month and March gives them five weekends which means five different Jeff Bridges movies. Corey gets to pick first and then they alternate every week as per usual. Each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week initially spoiler free and then diving in completely after a spoiler warning. Before getting into the review Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 4 - The Last Picture Show (1971) One of the big reasons Jonathan chose the Last Picture Show is its inclusion on the AFI top 100 movies list. He's seen 56 of the 100 and is trying to include as many of the movies from the list into Movie Club this year. The movie is directed by Peter Bogdanovich and stars Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, and Cybill Shepherd. The film has a 93 Metascore to boast and is described by IMDb.com as "In 1951, a group of high schoolers come of age in a bleak, isolated, atrophied West Texas town that is slowly dying, both culturally and economically." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

Where Hollywood Hides: Television | Movies | Music | Show Business | Writing | Producing | Directing | Acting

After his childhood appearance as "Tommy Bailey" in Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life  and an incredible 500 acting credits alongside stars like Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Sally Field, Shelly Fabares, Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Rick Nelson, and Elvis Presley, Hawkins grew restless co-starring as "America's favorite boyfriend and sidekick".  He wanted more out of his Hollywood career...and he went out and got it. Turning away from acting, Jimmy Hawkins set out to “remake” himself and soon became one of Hollywood’s most entrepreneurial and commercially successful independent film and television producers. You’ll hear how Jimmy navigated the shark-infested waters of Hollywood power-brokers and deal-makers to help finance and produce Evel Knievel with George Hamilton, and the thrill of the movie’s star-studded premier at Grauman’s Chiinese Theater that turned a small independent film into a 25-million dollar hit. Not resting on his laurels, Jimmy went on to create and produce hit films like  Scout’s Honor starring the young Gary Coleman, Don’t Look Back: The Story of Leroy “Satchel” Page with Lou Gossett Jr., and Love Leads the Way, starring Timothy Bottoms.  He reveals why each of his movie or television projects has projected positive values, the best in human nature, and personal redemption... and the keys to his ongoing personal and critical success. With unmatched creative instincts, Jimmy has the uncanny ability to transcend genres, formats, and media.  After creating and producing Motown Returns to the Apollo, he soon jumped into the publishing world to author no less than five best selling books targeting the everlasting appeal of Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life. This is a conversation you won't forget as Jimmy Hawkins shares the genuine secrets to producing both movies and television projects in Hollywood.

Back in the late 70's, people were crazy for disaster films. There were movies about earthquakes, airplane disasters, war and even one about roller coasters. In 1977, Universal Studios released a film about a madman (played by Timothy Bottoms) who was crisscrossing the country to set off bombs at amusement parks. He wanted the theme park chains to give him one million dollars or he would continue to blow up roller coasters and dark rides. It turns out that the only guy smart enough to stop him was a chain-smoking safety inspector (played by George Segal) who gets on the case after the madman destroys a coaster that he personally inspected. The plot is a bit laughable, but most theme park fans watch this movie for the scenes that were shot at Paramount's Kings Dominion, Six Flags Magic Mountain and the now defunct Ocean View Park. Three of the major on-ride sequences take place on PKD's Rebel Yell, SFMM's Revolution and The Rocket at Ocean View Park. On this week's show, we'll be joined by a Washington, DC film commentator who will give us his professional take on the film. We'll also give you the scoop on the fun things to look for the next time you watch the film. If you do happen to own a copy of the 1998 DVD release, you can now download a full-length commentary where we point out interacting facts and trivia about the movie in real-time. Such as: Who shot the film's producer Jennings Lang and why? What's the deal with the singing mushrooms at PKD? What is Vitamin F and how does it relate to SFMM?
