Before the mainstreaming of Ellen and the hit show Will and Grace, soaps did their best to bring tenderness to LGBTQ+ storylines. That's the nature of the form: It gives room for anyone and everyone to be complex, fleshed out, loved and hated all at once. From supporting roles to legacy characters to complex depictions in their full humanity, from respectability politics to sometimes making missteps, soaps have found ways to evolve their depictions of queer life. Ryan Phillippe played a gay teen in the 1990s on One Life to Live. Eden Riegel played Bianca, Erica Kane's gay daughter in the 2000s on All My Children. Today, progress looks like a villain, according to Days of Our Lives actor Greg Rikaart. “I came on as the ‘gay villain,' if you will, and to me, that felt like the ultimate equality, in that I didn't have to just say the right thing and follow the rules in order to be palatable to the audience,” he said. “And when I would get blowback from some people … I would just argue all those things: That that is further pushing the envelope open by saying, ‘Yeah, we can be multifaceted. We don't all have to be good guys.' ”

Irna Phillips created the cliff-hanger in broadcast storytelling and perfected the serial drama, first in radio, then on television. She mentored the creators of All My Children, One Life to Live, The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful. The latter two remain on television today. Phillips also created the television vixen, an archetype first seen on soap operas that still endures. Agnes Nixon and married couple William and Lee Phillip Bell worked for Phillips in Chicago. Nixon was head writer of The Guiding Light. In 1962, she wanted to do a cancer storyline, about how uterine cancer is curable if caught in time. Doctors said women proactively asked for pPap smears after watching the character Bert Bauer struggle with her health. The Bells also ushered the sexual revolution into soaps in the 1970s, with glitz and glamor and pushing the envelope on sexuality. Soap operas created complex and groundbreaking women-centered storylines. In 1964, Another World ran an abortion storyline. In 1971, All My Children's biggest vixen, Erica Kane, was a married pregnant model who didn't want to be a mother. That abortion storyline was disruptive because the character was not seen as the “right” woman to tell an abortion story. Rape storylines on soaps have played out for decades because the form allows real-time nuance with storytelling. Nothing is ever wrapped up in one “Very Special Episode.” The uniqueness of soaps, airing five days a week, allows for pioneering storytelling.

Please join author / actress Deborah Goodrich Royce for An Author's Afternoon in The Locher Room. Daytime fans will recognize Deborah from All My Children where she played Silver Kane, the sister of the legendary Erica Kane. Deborah will be here to discuss her second novel, Ruby Falls. Deborah made her debut as an author in 2019 with Finding Mrs. Ford. She also worked as a story editor for Miramax Films, and was instrumental in the development of such films as Emma, The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain, and A Wrinkle in Time. With her husband, she restored and reopened the Avon Film Center, a 1939 landmark in Stamford, CT, which now operates as a not-for-profit dedicated to independent, classic, foreign, and documentary films.RUBY FALLS:On July 12, 1968, six-year-old Ruby suffered a shattering loss: her father. She remembers holding his hand and trying heartily not to be afraid while standing in the pitch-black dark, with the sound of roaring water and feel of dank air surrounding her. They were in a cave—in the middle of a clump of tourists visiting Ruby Falls in Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Then, Ruby remembers her Daddy letting go of her hand... and disappearing. How could a full-grown man simply vanish—and worse, abandon his little girl, his own flesh and blood child? Yes, that terrible day and the mystery of what happened to her father took a toll. But, with the help of her strong, devoted mother and therapy, that little girl survived—and vowed to leave Ruby behind. Transformed into Eleanor Russell, she finds fame in her early 20s as a daytime soap opera star in New York City. Then, on the cusp on her 26th birthday, she loses her job over some sort of controversy. To avoid publicity, Eleanor flees to Rome and, after a whirlwind six-week romance, returns home with a dashing husband, Orlando Montague. The son of an English aristocrat and Chinese refugee, Orlando is an antiques dealer—like her Daddy was. Determined to start anew in Los Angeles, Eleanor finds and snaps up a storybook cottage in the Hollywood Hills. She lands a plum role—the lead in a remake of Rebecca, keeping all the mystery of Hitchcock's rendition of Daphne Du Maurier's classic, but revamping up the horror. With the perfect husband, perfect home, and perfect career boost, Eleanor should be perfectly happy. And she is—or so, she keeps telling herself—even when Orlando begins acting “unkind,” at best.Keeping the tension mounting and the shockers coming, Ruby Falls follows Eleanor as she begins to suspect that her perfect husband is a liar with sinister motives. Then, her work on the set of a chilling movie starts to blur with her life at home. Is Eleanor trapped in a dangerous marriage? Or is the horror and pain of her childhood coming back to destroy her? During the episode the DC gang shares their reactions to the sad news that the two long-running serials have been canceled. What path led to each show’s cancellation? Who is responsible or shares in the blame? They recap the progression of reports since Jamey first reported, back in February, ABC would be making a major decision in April. Did All My Children throw its actors under the bus? Susan Lucci has been a class act through it all, while Robin Strasser’s poignant hotline message to fans pulled at the heart strings. Might Oprah be interested in saving AMC and OLTL by bringing them to the OWN network? Then each in the group reveals how they’d like to see each soap wrap up its run. However, there are differing opinions on how to tie everything up on each of the shows. Melodie’s ending for AMC is all about Erica Kane while you’re not going to want to miss Jamey’s tongue-in-cheek suggestion for Viki and Dorian on OLTL. After All My Children goes off the air in September it will be replaced by The Chew, a cooking talk show hosted by Mario Batali, Clinton Kelly, Carla Hall, Michael Symon and Daphne Oz.
