In 2022, John O'Donnell and Peter von Behrens figured out how to design a heat battery that would deliver heat at very high, constant temperatures. The breakthrough came on the heels of two years of research and development, some of which took place in Peter's garage. Now, John and Peter were ready to prove their technology at commercial scale. So they approached a long-time innovation partner, Calgren Renewable Fuels, about deploying a 2-megawatt-hour heat battery for industrial heat delivery in Calgren's Pixley, California plant. That's when the next wave of problem solving started. It turns out, designing the technology was just half the battle. Manufacturing and installing a commercial scale demonstration proved harder than expected. In October 2023, they started on a six-month construction project that threw a myriad of challenges at the new start-up. In this episode, Lara Pierpoint talks to John O'Donnell, co-founder and chief innovation officer at Rondo Energy, about the bumpy road of building a first-of-a-kind commercial demonstration. They cover things like the structural engineering challenges of scaling a new technology, and finding the right construction partner. Plus, John explains what new design specs mean for the company going forward. The Green Blueprint is a co-production of Latitude Media and Trellis Climate. Home to about 1.7 million cows, California is the country's leading dairy producer and a large contributor of methane. Cow burps and manure emit the potent planet-warming gas. A growing number of dairy farms are using methane digesters to convert manure and other organic waste into biogas to produce electricity or power vehicles. The number is expected to increase since waste management practices such as digesters became eligible for funding from the Inflation Reduction Act—President Joe Biden's law to combat climate change. In the last decade, about 120 digesters have cropped up across California and roughly 100 more are in the pipeline. But a technology hailed as a cost-effective way to help the state reach its methane reduction goals has become controversial. Industrial-scale dairy farms already are among the biggest polluters in the San Joaquin Valley, a premier U.S. agricultural region with poor air quality. Now residents worry methane digesters could make pollution worse. In the Tulare County town of Pixley, the stench of cow feces, urine and ammonia forces residents to keep windows and doors closed. Some run air purifiers constantly to maintain comfortable and healthful conditions. A study funded by California air regulators recently concluded widespread digester adoption would have minor effects on local air quality. Officials also are looking into whether digesters increase potentially harmful ammonia emissions. Supporters point to the technology's effectiveness in mitigating climate change. AgSTAR, sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, estimates manure-based digesters reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 10 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2022. That's roughly the annual greenhouse gas emissions from more than 2 million passenger vehicles. Supporters argue biofuel from methane reduces pollution by replacing fossil fuels with cleaner vehicle fuels. Studies have found people living near large dairies can experience fatigue, respiratory problems, burning eyes and runny noses if odors are concentrated enough. And some research suggests digesters can increase ammonia emissions. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Baby, it's cold outside. Damn, I should have worked that song into 3 Chords & the Truth this week. Lost Episode #2 - Remember back in 2021 when Dustin and Logan were going to change the name of the show from Sharktoberfest the first time but then had to abort the whole thing because a show with that same name popped up right before they launched? No? Well, that's basically the gist of it. Anyway, this is the first episode of that cancelled podcast. This is episode #1 of Nielsen & Pixley's Film Pub! This episode is also a bit of an experiment. Dustin and Logan decided to watch the first theatrically released films of 3 of the most renowned big-budget filmmakers in the game and talk about how they influenced their careers. In September 2017, we dedicated an episode to a conversation about one photograph—an image made by photographer Richard Drew, on September 11, 2001, in New York, which has come to be called “The Falling Man.” It was an insightful recollection and analysis of an incredibly painful image, and on today's episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we will again discuss one photograph to try to understand it better. The photograph is titled, “The Drowning,” and it was taken in August of 2020 during another national crisis, albeit a very different one. Photographer Cornell Watson created the series “Behind the Mask,” “… for the times we pretend to be strong when we are dying from the weight of racism.” Each image in the series is a carefully created and powerful allegory, but “The Drowning,” for reasons we will discuss in the episode, has a quiet power that has not waned since we first saw it. To learn more about this photograph, we are fortunate to have Cornell Watson join us, as well as photographer, author, and educator Tara Pixley. With Watson we chat about his motivations, inspiration, and his collaborative process, camera, and lenses, and workflow on the day of the shoot. We consider the reception of the image and discuss the life of the entire series. In addition to her work as a visual journalist, a college professor, and curator, Tara Pixley is also a board member of the National Press Photographers Association, a member of the WPPI Advisory Board, and a co-founder of Authority Collective. Pixley is the ideal voice to provide us with aesthetic insight into the strength and significance of “The Drowning,” as well as the cultural and chronological contexts of why this image is an important artistic contribution from 2020 that echoes years of injustice and calls us to be more understanding and compassionate. We'd also like to thank Cara Finnegan and Michael Shaw of “Reading the Pictures” for their contribution to this episode. A friend of mine, and one of our previous guests, Jeff Titus, from episode #024 contacted me today and told me that the farm where I learned to love cattle and agriculture had been put up for sale. The current owners purchased it from my step-father a few years back, and it has pretty much just been sitting. However, now they have made some significant changes to it and put it up for sale. If you are interested in purchasing it, please contact Jeff, and he would be happy to represent you. Here is his contact information: Jeff Titus (209) 988-3335 jtitus@c21mm.com Here is the link to the listing: 1342 Hickman Road, Hickman, California It's got a small, three bedroom, one bathroom house on it that is a legitimate farm house and several outbuildings. However, the current owners have torn out all of the livestock handling facilities and planted almonds. So, you would be buying into a turn key, 10 acre almond operation. Or, you could rip them out, put fences and corrals back in, replant pasture and start over, but.....that would be crazy. According to the listing, the house was built in 1935. According to my family my step-grandfather, Boyd Womack, and my step-grandmother, Vada Womack, immigrated to California from Oklahoma around 1941 and lived in Pixley for about a year before buying this place for $5,000 in 1942. Now it's listed for $795,000. That's a 15,800% increase in just under 80 years! Their trek to California was after the Dust Bowl and Depression had ended or were ending, but their journey was very much the same with everything loaded onto one truck and my step-father, Chuck, and his brother, Ray, riding the entire way on a mattress that sat on top of all of the family possessions. Boyd and Vada rode in the cab of the truck with the little girl, Tommie. When they first purchased the property and home there was 20 acres. At some point Boyd sold off the ten acres on the eastern side of the farm. When they first arrived, Chuck and Ray, slept in the well house because it was a one bedroom home. Later, Boyd converted added on a bedroom and kitchen on the north side of the home and converted the previous kitchen to a bedroom. The home became the three bedroom, one bath home that it is now and the boys were able to move in. Boyd and Vada lived the rest of their lives in this house, and then Chuck and Tommie inherited it, Ray had already passed. Chuck bought Tommie's half of the farm, and he lived almost the rest of his life there as well. However, when he wasn't able to keep up with the demands any longer, he sold to the current owners and moved into nearby Waterford. So, today's episode is about my memories from that place.

Tune in to Episode 29 where we speak with Los Angeles-based portrait photographer, documentarian, and photojournalist, Tara Pixley. She holds a Ph.D. in communication and her personal projects explore Black joy, gender, sexuality, and the different representations of femininity. She is the co-founder of the Authority Collective whose aim is to bring up and support the next generation of women and non-binary photographers.
Lisa Pixley is an immeasurably amazing human. She is a professional printmaker, forager and wellspring of knowledge you wish you had on hand! She is one of the founders of Maine Cap N' Stem, if not the catalyst for its inception and our forward momentum into this industry. The lines might be a lil beer-blurry in regards to our first conversation about growing mushrooms after my departure from Arizona and arrival back into Maine, but I give her all the credit without a doubt. Her excitement for the basic human reactions and connections to mushrooms, foraging and creativity have motivated me and our company to continue on through all the ups and downs. Check her work out and head on over to her print shop if you're ever in Portland, Maine!

Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Marcella Pixley, the author of four acclaimed books for young people. Her novel Freak was a Kirkus Best Book of the Year for 2007, Without Tess was a Junior Library Guild Selection, and Ready to Fall was a Bank Street of Education Best Book for 2017. Her most recent novel Trowbridge Road was just recently named as one of ten books for children for the National Book Awards 2020. Marcella first began her writing career as a poet and has published in several literary journals including Sow's Ear Poetry Review, Prairie Schooner and Poet Lore, plus she was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her fiction has a lyric quality, which makes sense given her roots in poetry, and teaches 8th grade Language Arts at the Carlisle Public Schools. Today we’ll be discussing Marcella’s most recent book, Trowbridge Road. In this episode Marcella and I discuss: How her personal childhood experiences and her diagnosis of OCD inspired her book Trowbridge Road. Why she believes that MG should be written authentically to reflect realistic, traumatic, and difficult childhood experiences. What character voices, detailed moments, and scenes she specifically crafted to reflect her experiences. Plus, their #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: diymfa.com/336

Marcella Pixley and I talk about her new novel TROWBRIDGE ROAD, currently on the long list for the National Book Award. We discuss the many parallels between that story set in 1983 (now considered historical fiction!), her own similar childhood and how she separated the two to create a “soul book” We also chat about editing, teaching 8th grade language arts during the time of COVID-19, launching books virtually, being visited in your dreams by the dead, flying saucers, simulation theory, and so much more. Marcella Pixley teaches eighth grade Language Arts at the Carlisle Public Schools. Her poetry has been published in literary journals such as Prairie Schooner, Feminist Studies, Sow’s Ear Poetry Review and Poet Lore, and she has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Ms. Pixley has written three acclaimed young adult novels: Freak, Without Tess, Ready To Fall. and most recently, Trowbridge Road. Freak received four starred reviews and was named a Kirkus Best Book of the Year, Without Tess was a Junior Library Guild Selection, Ready to Fall was named a Bank Street Best Book of the Year. Her forthcoming novel, Trowbridge Road is a Junior Library Guild Selection and has been named a Best Book of the Year by Prenille Ripp. Ms. Pixley lives in an antique farmhouse in Westford, Massachusetts with her husband and two sons. She is a graduate of Vassar College, University of Tennessee and Bread Loaf School of English.
In this episode, we talk with Tara Pixley about the vital importance of taking a critical approach to media production. She unpacks our subconscious biases and the myth of objectivity to explain the importance of having different perspectives in the newsroom. She explains that both rights and responsibilities are central to her work in photojournalism. Finally, Tara reflects on personal experiences that have contributed to her understanding of what it means to be a responsible image-maker.What you'll find inside:"I was beginning to realise that the ways we as journalists represent marginalised people … is very problematic and it's not holistic storytelling. It's not even necessary accurate all of the time. And it isn't some kind of intentional choice made by the journalists … it really comes back to there being a lack of representation in the newsroom.” (2:45)“We have to start addressing who we are, what we, as individuals, bring to our media production, because everyone else is going to tell you that you have to take yourself out of it, that you're objective. … No one can be objective. And, in fact, if we're adhering to this ideal of objectivity, it allows us to do all manner of heinous things because we're not looking very critically at what we're actually producing.” (8:40)“Any time we're rushing away to go do something as a journalist, we're assuming that what's happening here doesn't matter and that what's happening out there is something that we have a right to.” (14:50)“Across hundreds of thousands of newsrooms, it's the same kind of people seeing the same way, thinking the same way - and it's not that that way is wrong, there is nothing wrong with the way that they think or see - it just isn't complete, it isn't diverse, it is not encompassing the whole of human experience, and it shows.” (21:00)“Our goal as photojournalists is to inspire that empathetic response … You can't do that with a blurred face. You can't do that when you see an image of people, you know, marching down the street, but they're all just blobs. That photo becomes irrelevant…. This demand from audiences to do that indicates that they don't really understand what photojournalists are supposed to be doing.” (34:10)“I just happen to be of the opinion that I can both hold on to my first amendment rights and minimise harm as I'm utilising those rights. I believe that I have rights and responsibilities to my public.” (39:00)“We need to stay with the trouble, we need to keep having those uncomfortable conversations and keep reckoning with our own relationship to images and what it means to make a photo." (50:00)What does photo ethics mean to Tara?“Photography ethics to me means an opportunity for me to reckon with that space betwixt reasonability and rights. The ethics of photography is an opportunity for me to constantly reassess and reimagine what it is I'm doing as a photographer, as a photo editor, as a scholar of visual journalism. What ideas am I producing in the world and how am I treating people as I produce those ideas?” (46:00)Links:“Why We Need More Visual Journalists and Editors of Color”Authority Collective

Live convo with Mr Hlatshwayo

In this episode, host Doug McKenty takes a deep dive into the science of Dr. Gaston Naessens with homeopathic doctor and author of Do No Harm, Charles Pixley. After inventing a microscope capable of analyzing living cells at 30,000x, Naessens observed the life cycle of a tiny microorganism he called a somatid. Blood cells in a healthy person contained somatids that evolved in a three stage cycle, but would continue through a 16 cycle progression in an individual under duress. Using this information, Nassens was able to diagnose chronic disease years earlier than previously possible, and could often treat these diseases before symptoms typically appear. Eventually Nassens developed a homeopathic treatment for cancer he called 714x, which had the ability to stop cancer progression while allowing the immune system to eradicate the disease. In the late 1980's, Dr. Charles Pixley learned of this protocol and began disseminating the drug to cancer patients all across the United States, observing remarkable rates of recovery. It did not take long for the medical establishment to take notice, however, as this remarkable cure threatened chemotherapy industry reaping billions of dollars in profits each year. Eventually, Naessens was publicly discredited and Pixley was eventually sent to jail for refusing to stop providing this remarkable medicine to people in need. Stay tuned for this discussion about Big Pharma corruption and the need to go back to a system of medical freedom where doctors and patients are able to make treatment decisions together utilizing a process of informed consent. Elyria Swansea neighborhood motel has been partially shut down & must correct health and safety violations. creating hazardous living conditions or it will be entirely shut down, city officials said. The west wing and full second story of the motel were shut down, many occupants were relocated to the first floor, said Capt. Pixley of the Denver Fire Department. As of Thursday about 70 people had been staying at the inn and 11 adults, along with three children, chose to leave. The Red Cross and RTD are partnering with city agencies to help occupants relocate. The city provided overnight lodging for three families, six people, Thursday night. Agencies also are working diligently with ownership to become compliant and address necessary issues. Since forming in 2013, the task force has conducted 40 motel inspections resulting in at least one business being shutdown as it was unable to stay compliant and up to code. https://www.denverpost.com/2018/09/27/health-violations-at-denver-mo

Amused Now featured artist interview with California country band Pixley.
Marcella Pixley was bullied when she was a girl in middle school. She had a different developmental clock than the other girls her age, which exposed her to taunting. As an adult Marcella teaches middle school and sees how much has changed and how much has remained the same. She views daily how preteens relate to each other. Marcella wrote a hard hitting, truthful gritty novel about her experiences called “Freak” to help young girls and parents understand this difficult growth stage. We talk with her about the book, how she writes and the effect writing the book had on her. She also shares her hopes about the effect of the book will have on parents and young people.
Almost ten million years in the future, the materialises on a vast spacecraft including its own miniature zoo and arboretum. The and are still explaining the basics of their time travel ability to new companion when she starts to show signs of a cold. It is only a matter of time before they are found and taken to the control chamber of the vessel. Their captors are the mute Monoids, seemingly identical alien beings with a single eye. The Monoids live in peace alongside the humans who command the spaceship, their own planet having been destroyed, but often do much of the menial work. The humans in charge of the ship explain that the Earth is about to be destroyed because of the expansion of the sun, and that this ship is an Ark sent into space with the last remnants of humanity, civilization and various forms of flora and fauna. The human Guardians in charge of the craft run a tight ship: failure to conform to rules means either death or miniaturisation until they reach their destination, an Earth-like planet called Refusis II, which takes nearly 700 years to get to. As an amusement during the journey a vast statue is being carved by hand, depicting a human being. Dodo's cold has now spread amongst the Monoid and human populations, but regrettably, they have little natural immunity. When the Commander of the Ark collapses with the malady, the whole ship is placed on alert as Zentos, the Deputy Commander is suspicious of the travellers and believes they have deliberately infected the ship. When the first Monoid dies, there is little the Doctor can say to pacify the angry Guardians. Zentos places the Doctor, Steven and Dodo on trial for their crimes, with a young Guardian called Manyak and the Commander's daughter Mellium as defence. Steven acts as the first defence witness, attacking the closed nature of the minds of the Guardians, but exhausts himself in the process and collapses with the fever. His words have no impact on Zentos, who orders their execution, but the ailing Commander intervenes to protect the three travellers and permit them access to medical equipment to devise a cure to the cold. The Doctor is thus able to recreate the cold vaccine from the membranes of animals on the craft, and this is administered throughout the crew. The Commander, Steven and the others infected are soon on the road to recovery. Their work done, the trio have only time to observe the end of Earth on the long-range scanner before the Doctor leads them back to the TARDIS. Curiously, when the TARDIS rematerialises, they are still on the Ark. However, seven hundred years have passed and there has been a major change: the Monoids are in control. They have completed the statue in the image of themselves, having staged a coup during the long journey. This was made possible by a genetic weakness introduced into the humans, but not the Monoids, by a second wave of the cold virus 700 years earlier. The Monoids also now have voice communicators and use numerical emblems to distinguish each other. The humans are now little more than slaves, with the odd exception like the collaborator subject Guardian Maharis, and have little hope of change. The Doctor and his friends encounter the Monoid leadership, installed in a throne room on the Ark, after which they are sent to the security kitchen to help prepare meals for the Monoids. Two humans, Manissa and Dassuk, believe the moment of their liberation is at hand. Steven tries to help them in a revolt which is unsuccessful. The arrival on Refusis is close at hand and a landing pod is prepared. Monoid 1 wants to make sure that the new world is inhabited only by Monoids, despite promises that the human population will be allowed to live there too. A landing party is assembled – the Doctor, Dodo, Monoid 2 and a subject Guardian named Yendom – and they soon reach Refusis II and start to investigate. A stately castle which seems to be unoccupied is in fact the home to the invisible Refusians, giant beings rendered invisible by solar flares. They welcome their guests and have been expecting them but only want to share the planet with other peaceful beings. Monoid 2 and Yendom flee the castle, and en route Yendom realises the humans will not be allowed to reach Refusis with the Monoids. Monoid 2 kills him and is shortly afterward killed himself when the landing pod explodes. The tension of the situation foments dissent in the Monoid ranks, with Monoid 4 openly opposing Monoid 1's plans to abandon the humans and colonise Refusis without more checks on the planet. Three launchers are sent to the planet, Monoids 1 and 4 commanding them, and when the crews emerge Monoid 4 interprets the destroyed landing pod as evidence of the danger that Monoid 1 has led them to. A civil war erupts between the two Monoid factions. The Doctor, Dodo and a Refusian use the confusion to steal one of the launchers and pilot back to the Ark. The Monoids have placed a bomb on board the ship and plan to evacuate soon to the planet surface, leaving the humans to die on the spaceship. Word of this threat spreads and spurs a human rebellion. The arrival of the Doctor and the Refusian spur things along, and they soon realise the bomb has been placed in the head of the statue. Thankfully the Refusian is able to help dispose of the statue into space before the bomb explodes. The humans now begin to land on Refusis themselves, having been offered support on peaceful terms by the Refusians. Many of the Monoids have been killed in their civil war and those that remain are offered peaceful settlement alongside the other two species. Once more the TARDIS departs, and this time the curiosity is that the Doctor simply vanishes from the TARDIS control room… [] Continuity In , the Earth was also evacuated because of solar flare activity that rendered the biosphere uninhabitable for five thousand years. There, however, the survivors of mankind slept in suspended animation and returned to repopulate the planet after that period had passed. The Earth is seen trailing smoke as it heads towards the Sun at the close of episode two. The Doctor estimate the date as 10,000,000, however in the 2005 episode "", Earth is finally destroyed by the expanding Sun around AD 5,000,000,000. Series writer opines that the fictional alluded to in the revived series of Doctor Who rewrote some historical events, among them the destruction of Earth. The Monoids also feature in the audio drama by . The TARDIS is referenced in the first episode as "that black box" whereas by the time of the third doctor when the series was recorded in color it is obviously a blue police box.
