Dr. Jennifer Forestal, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Loyola University Chicago, discusses how digital platforms can be approached from an architectural perspective. Dr. Forestal shares insights from her latest book, Designing for Democracy, where she evaluates digital platforms' democratic potential from the lens of political theory. The episode breaks down a framework for how to assess the democratic quality of social media platforms by examining their degrees of boundaries, durability, and flexibility. Dr. Forestal reveals how these properties can be illustrated by the cases of Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit.

Today on our show, it's time to talk shop. Malls, department stores, traditional brick-and-mortar—these are still a big part of everyday life. But even frequent in-store patrons are increasingly finding themselves buying more items online. And while that's great when searching for exactly what you're looking for, it does take some of the serendipity out of it all. Our guest, Brian Beitler, Founder of the video commerce platform sune and General Manager of Live Shop Ventures for Qurate Retail Group, has been thinking a lot about how to bring some of that in-store magic to online spaces. From using data to personalize eCommerce to putting video storytelling at the center of shopping experiences, Brian and his team are leaning into the future of retail for brands, influencers and, of course, shoppers.Brought to you by frog, a global creative consultancy. frog is part of Capgemini Invent. Why do we need platform business design? Today's rise of digital platforms is reshaping our economy leaving traditional business models far behind. Google, Airbnb, Facebook, Uber, and Amazon are only a few prominent examples of an unstoppable row of businesses leveraging platform dynamics. A multi-sided platform acts as a digital marketplace, where producers and consumers come together, and value is created for both parties through their interaction. Platforms create and manage external communities rather than produce and ship products or services on their own. Thus, they can leverage network effects and are able to grow at a pace that easily exceeds this of even the best-funded traditional businesses.

M., Qayyum, S., Zhang, J., Zaim Wadghiri, Y., Alon, L., Yaghmazadeh, O. Abstract: Proper animal conditioning is a key factor in the quality and success of preclinical neuroimaging applications. We introduce an open-source easy-to modify multi-modal 3D printable design for rodent conditioning for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or other imaging modalities. Our design can be used for brain imaging in anesthetized or awake mice and anesthetized rats. We show ease-of-use and reproducibility of subject conditioning with anatomical T2-weighted imaging for both mice and rats. We also demonstrate application of our design for awake fMRI in mice using both visual evoked potential and olfactory stimulation paradigms. In addition, we demonstrate that our proposed cradle design can be extended to multiple imaging modalities combining MRI, Positron emission tomography and X-ray computed tomography. Learn about the key ways we'll achieve net zero building using sustainable design and modern methods of construction. Check out this month's episode of our podcast, Built Environment Matters. Bryden Wood's Head of Sustainability, Pablo Gugel, joins Jaimie Johnston MBE.
The UK's Infrastructure and Projects Authority has just published its Roadmap to 2030 – a clear and bold plan to drive a step change in infrastructure performance. Central to this plan is the adoption of a platforms approach to construction.Bryden Wood first described platform construction back in 2017, and has been developing it ever since. It will transform construction - for everyone's benefit, from reducing carbon to boosting the manufacturing industry.Board Director Jaimie Johnston MBE is also Design Lead at the UK's Construction Innovation Hub. Join him this month as he talks to colleague, Trudi Sully, Impact Director at the Construction Innovation Hub about the IPA's Roadmap to 2030, the importance of collaboration between competitors, and how everything in construction is changing.
In this episode, I chat with Patricia Dwyer, about designing for ecosystems. Patricia is a content designer on Intuit's Platform Design team, and shares what the design challenges are in a platform environment. Anyone interested in how design contributes to huge architectural efforts should give this a listen. Bryden Wood's Head of Sustainability and Building Physics, Helen Hough, joins Jaimie Johnston to talk about all things sustainable design:From how Platform construction (P-DfMA) helps to lower embodied carbon, to designing buildings to the WELL Building Standard, with COVID-19 in mind.Helen Hough also gives an overview of the various built environment institutions working towards a more sustainable future from LETI to CIBSE to RIBA, Passivehaus and BREEAM. And so much more...battery technology, whole life value, net zero carbon emissions...
We've talked extensively about the benefits a Platforms approach to Design for Manufacture and Assembly (P-DfMA) can bring to a construction project, namely cost savings, increased safety on site, better quality, more sustainable buildings. But, what does a plausible future look like in practice if government and the private sector adopt this way of working. Board Director and Head of Global Systems, Jaimie Johnston, explores what's technically achievable in a near future state and how construction Platforms unlock the true power of digital, data and manufacturing in the lifecycle of a construction project.
Bryden Wood Board Director and Head of Global Systems, Jaimie Johnston MBE, talks about a platform approach to design for manufacture and assembly (P-DfMA) and how it can benefit architects, the construction industry, the built environment and society as a whole.Bryden Wood is a technology-led design company focused on Design to Value in construction. Their pioneering work with platform design enables sets of components or assemblies to be configured in a variety of different ways, in order to create a variety of different assets within the built environment. Part of a Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) approach to construction, the benefits of platforms design include improved efficiency, costs, quality, safety and sustainability. The construction industry currently contributes 39% of global carbon emissions, so we need to act. Join us as we discuss how using Modern Methods of Construction can help the industry move towards a brighter future.Artwork: Megan Chown, Bryden Wood Music: Tamar Zak-Collins
Alex starts the show with an in-depth look at phase 1 of the US China trade deal, detailing stipulations around counterfeit goods, intellectual property, and the impact increased spending could have on the US GDP. Next he explains how the 3 month process of platform design works, why McDonalds got a bad deal with Uber Eats, and what is going on with SoftBank funding multiple ends of the food delivery platform wars. The show closes with a look at how Epic Games has quickly become a big competitor in digital PC games sales.
