In this episode, Alex Sarama and Adam discuss the concept of affordances in basketball by exploring how affordances, which are opportunities for action, can be applied within the basketball environment. They emphasize the importance of understanding that affordances are unique to each individual player and can be influenced by their physical features and skill level. They also discuss the role of coaches in designing practice environments that incorporate affordances and how to manipulate affordances to change the invitations an athlete receives from the environment. Join us for a lively session on the next episode of The Uncertainty of … with Rosa Carrillo discussing The OHS Profession: Leave or Stay? on Friday, July 19 2024 at 11am ET, 4pm GMT.On last month's show we talked about the message some employers are giving employees: “If they don't like it, then go elsewhere.” This month we'll discuss the employees' perspective - should I stay or leave? Our conversation will be grounded on Rosa's latest book: OHS Voices from the Resistance. The book helps the people who work in OHS to not only feel heard and seen but to also see themselves and each other in a different light. We view humans not as cogs in a machine, not as hazards to be controlled but as storytellers sharing their lived experiences. Why is the underground resistance phenomenon in the OHS ranks happening? What systemic conditions are forcing OHS professionals to think about leaving? How might the uncertainty to stay or leave be navigated with an “Affordance map”?

‘The kitchen needs cleaning, but only one of us seems to notice. I mean, he looked straight at the dishes in the sink…and just stacked his dish on top of them. How high does this precarious tower of crockery have to be until he decides to wash the dishes or, more likely, they collapse into an unrepairable heap? I suppose I'll have to wash them. They won't get washed otherwise, and I'd rather get them off my mind.' The unequal distribution of household labour is a familiar concern amongst feminists. Despite the progress in women's rights and freedoms, women across the world continue to bear the responsibility of domestic chores and childcare. This raises an important question: why do women in monogamous, opposite-sex relationships continue to shoulder a disproportionate amount of housework work despite their political gains? In this episode, we'll be exploring this question with two outstanding philosophers of morality and mind: Paulina Sliwa (Professor of Philosophy at the University of Vienna) and Thomas McClelland (Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Cambridge). According to Paulina and Tom, our disparities and perception of domestic labour are determined by our feelings, beliefs, and social norms. In other words, the way we perceive the world is radically different. The dishes don't call out to some – in need of cleaning – in a moment of perception, as they do to others. So what can we do to change this disparity…that is, if it's in need of changing at all. Contents Part I. Affordance Perception Part II. New Discourses Bullets, Ep. 86 One of the most potent techniques dialectal wizards make use of is setting "affordance traps." An affordance trap is a way to trap their targets into a very limited range of options (which are afforded to them), usually with the psychological effect of making it difficult or impossible to think of any other possibilities other than those offered. Breaking free of affordance traps is necessary to beating Woke Marxism and all other forms of dialectical manipulation. Continuing their consideration of pleasure for a world of leftist struggle, co-hosts Charlotte Tavan (@moltopopulare) and Natalie Tabb Smith (@orangeasm) turn to a recently published Superstructure article co-authored by Erica Robles-Anderson and Scott Ferguson. Titled "The Visual Cliff: Eleanor Gibson and the Origins of Affordance," the essay critically locates the hidden history of contemporary user-experience design in a well-known psychological experiment. Conducted by Dr. Eleanor Gibson, the experiment placed babies alone atop a visual precipice in order to test their depth perception. Following the essay, Charlotte and Naty question the notion that we must remain frozen forever between false binaries, like babies staring over an impossible visual cliff. Doing so, their discussion weaves through thinkers as diverse as Lynne Segal, Adrienne Maree Brown, Lisa Duggan, Gayle Rubin, and more.
On today's ID the Future, host Casey Luskin sits down with Dominic Halsmer, a Senior Professor of Engineering at Oral Roberts University, to discuss Halsmer's recent book, Hacking the Cosmos: How Reverse Engineering Uncovers Organization, Ingenuity and the Care of a Maker. Dr. Halsmer draws on the engineering concept of affordances to explore how Earth and the universe show evidence of having been intelligently engineered to afford the possibility of life, and even for humans to discover evidence of a grand designer. Also in the conversation, the implications of biologists using reverse engineering to better understand biological systems, and of engineers studying clever designs in the biological realm to make engineering breakthroughs, a creative strategy known as biomimicry.

Key Points From This Episode: - Felix introduces himself and what he does as a game designer. - Felix explains what it means to be a game designer, using a door in a game as a metaphor, - Game development and how it parallels with user experience or user interface design. - How Felix strives towards guiding people through an optimal and less frustrating experience. - Felix explains what a AAA game is – they are the big-budget, summer blockbusters of games. - Hear more about what led Felix to game design. - Going into gaming, Felix had some programming knowledge from his HTML coding hobby. - How Felix leads a user to make certain decisions, from lighting and UI to manipulating time. - Felix defines affordances as what’s possible with an object as expressed through its design. - Felix outlines some examples of how game designers include prompts to guide players. - Restrictions and repetitions are introduced throughout a game to establish a design language and what the affordances are for the user. - Felix explains how he balances high intensity difficulty with ease of play through play testing. Tweetables: - “We have to constantly strive to make sure that people are being guided towards an optimal, not so frustrating experience. Unless we do want to frustrate them, in which case that's an entirely different design challenge. The goal is to make sure that anybody can play our games with the minimum amount of direct interference or touch on that”. — @uhfelix [0:05:07] “Games are this thing you just make up in [their] entirety. Down to the very weird, basic, physical elements, you can use all of them to influence people.” — @uhfelix [0:14:54] “Affordance is this concept of how does the design communicate its use to the user? In games, it’s very important because in the virtual world anything is possible. You want to be able to really limit the space of possibility within the player's mind, or else they'll be stuck. They’ll be at a loss as to what to do to progress, or move forward, or to accomplish goals.” — @uhfelix [0:17:57] “If you have a lot of focus on player experience, then that would lead you to integrate more player feedback into that process.” — @uhfelix [0:25:11] Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode: - Felix Park on Twitter (https://twitter.com/uhfelix) - Felix Park (http://www.felixpark.com/) - The Design of Everyday Things (https://www.amazon.com/Design-Everyday-Things-Revised-Expanded/dp/0465050654) - Enjoy the Vue on Twitter (https://twitter.com/enjoythevuecast?lang=en) - Enjoy the Vue (https://enjoythevue.io/) Special Guests: Felix Park and Ringo Kim.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.10.18.344267v1?rss=1 Authors: Djebbara, Z., Fich, L. B., Gramann, K. Abstract: Action is a medium of collecting sensory information about the environment, which in turn is shaped by architectural affordances. Affordances characterize the fit between the physical structure of the body and capacities for movement and interaction with the environment, thus relying on sensorimotor processes associated with exploring the surroundings. Central to sensorimotor brain dynamics, the attentional mechanisms directing the gating function of sensory signals share neuronal resources with motor-related processes necessary to inferring the external causes of sensory signals. Such a predictive coding approach suggests that sensorimotor dynamics are sensitive to architectural affordances that support or suppress specific kinds of actions for an individual. However, how architectural affordances relate to the attentional mechanisms underlying the gating function for sensory signals remains unknown. Here we demonstrate that event-related desynchronization of alpha-band oscillations in parieto-occipital and medio-temporal regions covary with the architectural affordances. Source-level time-frequency analysis of data recorded in a motor-priming Mobile Brain/Body Imaging experiment revealed strong event-related desynchronization of the alpha band to originate from the posterior cingulate complex and bilateral parahippocampal areas. Our results firstly contribute to the understanding of how the brain resolves architectural affordances relevant to behaviour. Second, our results indicate that the alpha-band originating from the posterior cingulate complex covaries with the architectural affordances before participants interact with the environment. During the interaction, the bilateral parahippocampal areas dynamically reflect the affordable behaviour as perceived through the visual system. We conclude that the sensorimotor dynamics are developed for processing behaviour-relevant features in the designed environment. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info
On January 13, 2018, the people of Hawaii woke to a shocking alert on their phones and TVs. An incoming ballistic missile was on its way and that the warning was not a drill. It was 38 minutes later that the alert was retracted. During those 38 minutes -- panic set in. People were trying to figure out what to do. People drove their families to highway tunnels in hopes it would protect them. We can only imagine the fear that raced through the population of more than a million people. How did this happen? Hawaii Emergency Alert System The alert was accidentally triggered by a state employee who was attempting to perform an internal test. As the Washington Post reported, the user interface for the emergency management system had a drop-down menu with two choices -- TEST MISSILE ALERT and MISSILE ALERT. The two options worded almost identically and with no confirmation required. It is harder to erase a photograph from your phone that it was to scare the citizens and tourists in Hawaii. The designer did not consider the confusion of choosing the wrong menu option. There were no signals to the user about the action they were about to take. What if the same lack of thought and consideration has been applied to airplanes, water treatment facilities, or nuclear power plants? It isn’t restricted to exotic or high-risk areas. You experience these signals every day. Office Affordance Have you ever walked up to a door and instead of a door handle, you were presented with a flat panel area where the door handle would normally be? What do you do? You push and the door opens. This signal of the properties of the door, in this case, to push, is called affordance. Affordance can also signal what not to do with the door. With no handle, you are not to pull on the door. In our office, there is a conference room near my cube. On the glass doors are handles. I invariably grab the handles and pull. What happens? Nothing. To open the door you need to push. So after I pull, then I push. While I’ve been in this conference rooms hundreds of times, I pull each and every time. The visual queue, affordance, overrides my memory of the last time I tried to enter the conference room -- and I pull on the handle. While we may chuckle at these design oversights, the use of affordance can give customers a clear signal of how-to, and how not to, experience a product or service. Sony Walkman Affordance In 1980, I got my first Sony Walkman. This innovation had quickly become “the tech” everyone had to have. It allowed you to take your music with you. At the time, I was into DJing and making my version of mixtapes. The walkman allowed me to enjoy my music wherever I went -- to the annoyance of the then-girlfriend and now wife. What I found intriguing with the Walkman was what it didn’t do -- as much as what it did do. Yes -- it was the first highly portable way to listen to recorded music. What it did not allow you to do was record music. That’s right -- you could listen to music but you could not record it. Why? Up to that time, every cassette player allowed you to record. Sony made the clever design decision to not have a feature to signal to customers what it was -- a portable music player. This decision had other benefits including reducing complexity and lower intimidation that technology can sometimes cause. This design decision by Sony is another example of affordance. It signed what you can and cannot do with a Sony Walkman. Affordance applies to all kinds of products and services. McDonald’s Affordance Have you ever wondered why McDonald’s does not offer cutlery? I can honestly say that I’ve never been tempted to use a fork and knife to eat a Quarterpounder. In its early days, McDonald’s didn’t offer cutlery as an affordance signal to its customers in how they were to enjoy their meal -- with their hands. For companies, paying attention to affordance can create highly differentiated customer experiences that create brand loyalty. Apple Affordance Apple is one such company. By limiting options, radical simplicity, and clear signaling of what every action will be, Apple has created a cult following. Ignoring affordance can lead to customer confusion and frustration which will open the doors to others to your market. Ask yourself -- what affordance signals are you sending to your customers? Maybe it is the front door? Or a user interface in your mobile app or website? Or maybe a feature available or unavailable with your product? How do you find these affordances that you can fix or leverage? By testing with your customers. Remember, you are not a proxy for your customer. Affordance is in the eye of the customer. Be more like Apple - and less like the Hawaii Emergency Alert system.

(Economo, 2009)
In this second part of the two-part series, Aubrey and Justin expand on the idea of extracting behavior definition from markup as a completely separate layer. In the process, some provocative suggestions are made for the evolution of HTML and web interactivity in general.
In this two part series, Aubrey and Justin discuss the many facets of touch- and gesture-based interactivity. HTML was never intended to describe interactive components. In part 1, we lay the ground work for this argument and set the stage for part 2, where the only logical solution presents itself.
