A great panel isn't about vague concepts; it's about concrete takeaways. As a moderator, it's my job to make sure the audience gets value, not just verbiage. So, next time you're moderating and a panelist offers up a fluff-filled response, don't let it slide. Push for specifics. Your audience will thank you.

The wisdom in the book of Job often gets tangled with platitudes of our own making. Which is which? “Job is dealing with the idea of a kind of a suffering that's incomprehensible and he gives us permission to speak very differently to and about God,” said Dr. Tim Saleska, professor of exegetical theology. Join us as Dr. Saleska faces Job head-on.
When the false alert hit yesterday, a parade of thoughts ran through my head. Is this real? Is what happened in the Palisades about to happen here? What do we take? Fears ran rampant. Even after the "oops, technical glitch," some fears remained. And a new level of compassion arose for those who have already lost what I only feared for a few minutes. How do we face fears like that - the kind that don't wait for you to process them, but simply overwhelm you whether you are ready or not? Platitudes like "David faced a giant and so can you" ring quite hollow when the fire is actively consuming your life. It's also the wrong way to understand that passage. Where do we get the courage to face our fears, especially ones as overwhelming as the tragedy our city is living through? Let's talk about what gives us courage as real as our fears: "The Man in the Middle" (1 Samuel 17:32-50).
In 2016, Kitty Norton left her job as an NBC assistant editor in Los Angeles, CA for her hometown of Portland, OR to care for her mother living with dementia. While caring, she authored the dementia caregiver blog Stumped Town Dementia, writing tales of dementia life, not dementia death, which resonated deeply with readers around the world. After her mother's death in 2021, Kitty took to the road in an RV to produce and direct her cross-country documentary film Wine, Women, and Dementia This film honors the journey with her mother, as well as spreads awareness of the caregiver side of the equation in dementia, and celebrates family caregivers - to let them know they are not alone and that they are worthy of being seen, heard, and celebrated alongside who they are caring for on this difficult road to the end of life. In this episode we discuss common tropes and platitudes most often heard in dementia, the reality behind them, and how Kitty's caregiving journey led her to create her film.

Governor-elect Kelly Armstrong, fresh off a landslide victory on the statewide ballot, is coming in hot. He's still got a term in Congress to finish out -- he's said he'll resign shortly before midnight the day before he's sworn in as governor on December 15 -- but he's got big plans for his time in Bismarck. "I don't give platitudes," he told me and Chad Oban on this episode of Plain Talk. Armstrong campaigned on property tax reform. He opposed Measure 4 -- he said in a previous Plain Talk interview that he hated the proposal -- but he also isn't a fan of what the Legislature has been doing to address the issue in previous sessions, which as amounted transferring local spending into the state budget. "Don't send me another buy down without significant reform," he told us. "It hasn't worked in the past. It's not going to work going forward." He also talked about his philosophy when it comes to staffing his new administration. "I have a small alaw firm mentality for how I operate," he said (Armstrong practiced as an attorney before his political career). "I hire smart people and empower them to make decisions. In today's fast-paced social media landscape, it's easy to fall into the trap of using clever platitudes, gotcha statements, and quippy one-liners. While these can feel satisfying to post, they often fall short of sparking real engagement, and ultimately transformational conversations.

One year ago, on October 7, 2023, Palestinian terrorists committed the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust. However, instead of showing solidarity with Israel, antisemitism is growing stronger. And politics responds with platitudes and empty rhetoric. In this episode, Paul Ronzheimer speaks with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner about the attack on Israel and its consequences. Döpfner is shocked by the “cold-heartedness” of many supposedly progressive circles toward Israel and sees Germany at a “crossroads.” The decisions made now will determine whether the path leads to disaster or whether the Federal Republic can draw the right conclusions from Islamism and antisemitism. In this episode, we tackle how crime is a growing concern for New Mexicans and break down what that means for the state. We also cover the latest horserace numbers for the presidential race, with Mark analyzing what those numbers tell us. Will Harris' platitudes be enough to carry her through the next 45 days, or will voters and the media finally demand more detailed stances on key issues? And, to wrap things up, we share a hilarious story about a Chinese zoo attempting to pass off a far more common animal as panda bears. After the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, it will take more than meaningless platitudes to put America on a better path. In a special episode of unDivided, we take you through a history of statements that display the deep hypocrisy playing out after the shooting in Pennsylvania. We'll also bring you to the Republican National Convention as history unfolds in Milwaukee.
Has anyone ever told you: "Look at all you have, you should be grateful!" when you were experiencing an uncomfortable feeling like sadness, anger, grief, or maybe trying to uphold a boundary for yourself? Some of us may have even expressed this kind of thing to other people too, or even to ourselves! In this episode, Elizabeth Mintun explores the “dark side” of gratitude. In particular, Elizabeth addresses how gratitude can be used as a way to invalidate or minimize people's struggles. This “gratitude platitude” is the opposite of the medicine of gratitude, which can uplift, connect us with our abundance, and offer ease. Key Takeaways: Using terms like “you should be grateful!” as a way to shame someone for struggling can be damaging. Reminding people of all that's around them to be thankful for can be helpful, but often first it is important (and typically more effective) to meet them in the struggle they're in rather than telling them to be different than they are. Gratitude can be a powerful medicine when used to connect with abundance rather than invalidate feelings. As John C. Maxwell says, “One of the greatest values of mentors is the ability to see ahead what others cannot see and to help them navigate a course to their destination.” Today, John is sharing 10 different Platitudes and Attitudes that he has learned throughout his leadership that you can apply to your own life, family, business, and leadership as well! After his lesson, Mark Cole and Traci Morrow discuss what John taught and give you practical ways to implement it into your leadership. Key takeaways: - Preparation is the backbone of quick decisions. - Leaders always view, make decisions, and lead based upon not only what is, but what has been and what will be. - The more you complain, the less you'll obtain. Season 3 Part 11 of the Travels With Randy podcast is here! Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Platitudes Once again, Bubba has a busy stretch of time and can't get the 'ole podcast recorded fast enough because holy moley Randy has been everywhere in the past week and a half. We start this week's journey in New Mexico at the Carlsbad Caverns National Park, which is over a mile and a half walk all underground and all beautiful. Make sure to find Randy's Facebook post on Travels With Randy for this one - amazing pics. From there it's off to Guadalupe National Park in Texas and then down to Big Bend National Park in Texas, which borders the Rio Grande and the Mexican border. Randy then almost poops his pants in San Antonio right before he follows the Texas coast down to South Padre Island and then up and around the Texas border to Galveston, then Orange, Texas. Then it's across the swampy west Louisiana landscape over to Baton Rouge and down to New Orleans for a wonderful dinner of....Italian food? (Facepalm). Randy finishes the week moving across the Gulf Coast into Alabama. This area is a big memory for Bubba, who sold pictures on streetcorners with Scientologists all across the Nawlins area and over to Gulfport and Biloxi, and he fills Randy in on the experience. Randy is Miami bound to watch a little baseball next week and we can't wait to catch up then. Come join the conversation on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/travelswithrandypodcast Have a great idea for the guys? Want to sponsor us? Want to be a guest? This week, we're sitting down with Paul Daugherty, pastor of Victory Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to talk in raw and vulnerable fashion about his brush with considering suicide. And before I go on, I want to share that if you or anyone you know is considering suicide, please stop this podcast and dial 988 on your phone right now. It's a 24-hour crisis hotline and help is available. Aside from that part of the conversation, Paul and I discuss the strength of a lie to empower our lives and why we need to dump the plastic, sugar-coated platitudes when dealing with loss and pain. We'll also discuss fake prayers and why you can't just pray trauma away. In a culture so consumed by facades, I'm very thankful for Paul's transparency in our conversation and trust you'll receive great value from it. By buddy Joel Bowers always says, “Platitudes don't work when you're in pain.” So… A conversation with André and AJ before our show this weekend was a perfect moment to ask if a podcast I posted last week holds up. It does, but I'll need to share a gig story of mine that I'm a bit insecure about, to put my money where my podcast mic is.

Should you have more of a delicate touch when you're working with high performers and top achievers while you're coaching and mentoring them? And do platitudes have any place in our coaching and mentoring work that we do with clients? In this insightful episode of the upcoach podcast, host Todd Herman delves into the nuances of coaching high performers with the acclaimed executive coach, Alisa Cohn. Named the world's top startup coach, Alisa brings her extensive experience working with leaders from successful startups like Venmo and Etsy, as well as giants like Google and Microsoft. The conversation covers the delicate balance required when guiding top achievers, the role of platitudes in coaching, and the transformative power of mantras in initial client interactions.Alisa, also a celebrated author of "From Start-up to Grown-up," winner of the 2022 Independent Press Award and the 2023 Best Book Award for Entrepreneurship, shares her journey from the corporate world to becoming a globally recognized coach. She discusses her approach to addressing complex people issues and her mantra of adding value in just 20 minutes. With insights from her work with diverse leaders, including the first female minister of Afghanistan and the former Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, Alisa's wisdom is invaluable for anyone in the coaching or leadership field. This episode is a must-listen for coaches, entrepreneurs, and anyone interested in the art of effective leadership and coaching.Episode Quotes:The importance of avoiding platitudes in coaching and mentoringSo to me, so many coaches and people who do what we do express themselves in platitudes like, “Oh, my wise thing I'm going to say, “You've got to plan the work so you can work the plan or whatever.” And the problem with that is it just completely negates what it actually takes. The nuanced, difficult step by step work of change that it actually takes for the people I work with, startup founders and other senior executives. And I would just say they've already done the easy things. They've already done the medium things, the hard things really take that inner delicate inner work of understanding what's in the way and using tactics and frameworks to get there, not just overarching platitudes that I think some people write about and talk to their clients about. The delicate work of coachingI think that you need to have a delicate touch often to be effective with people. So when I'm interacting with my clients what you might see is an arrogant startup founder. What I see in the sanctity of the coaching room is someone who has topics that we both care a lot about imposter syndrome or somebody who has a confusion about what to do. And if you push them too hard, they shut down or they overcorrect. So the delicacy has to do with, first of all, my relationship with them, my interpersonal skills with them. And second of all, how can they sort of calibrate their style without losing who they are? And that is the delicate work of coaching. The role of financial background in entrepreneurial space I would say understanding the finances, but also understanding what it takes to run a business. So young entrepreneurs, when I first meet them, I'm like, “Well, how's the business doing?” “Oh, it's great. It's up and to the right.” Okay. But how do you know it shouldn't be more up and more to the right? What goals and benchmarks? What did you predict was going to happen? How are you kind of finessing or continuing to perfect your system and be able to forecast what's going to happen? What experiments are you running? How are you scoring those experiments? So, you know, the analytics and the metrics, whether or not they're financial, I think that's where I think my expertise comes into play as well to help people understand how they need to structure themselves as they're building something which is kind of careening out of control. The power of a mantra: Add value in 20 minutesThe one thing I want to share is that I created my mantra, which is “Add value in 20 minutes.” And when I'm meeting with a prospect, also with clients, with anybody, I always have it in my head. I'm here to add value. How can I add value to this person in 20 minutes? And that shows up in a lot of ways. Sometimes it's asking questions that nobody else has asked them. Sometimes it's listening and really hearing the undertones of what they're saying and then mirroring that back to them. Sometimes it's actually sharing a practical tool that they find very helpful. One way or the other, I've been successful, but I've also served my clients by having this idea in my head about how I can add value in 20 minutes.Show Links:Official WebsiteAlisa's book From Start-Up to Grown-UpAlisa's 5 Scripts for Delicate ConversationsAlisa Cohn on LinkedinAlisa Cohn on Twitter

The kids are growing up and it's the moms that have the growing pains. Nicole and Vanessa hash out the trials, tribulations, total glories and love explosions of watching the kids grow. Yoda mom chimes in, an old pro at the emotional roller coaster. You know what they say: “You never stop growing.” “And it all goes so fast…” Platitudes? Maybe. But you know what, they're also big truths. So, yeah, we better enjoy every second of it.
This is a solo episode where I offer basic framework, tools and resources for experiencers (and anyone else who is looking for grounding after a reality-wobbling event in their lives). These are the ways that I stabilized on my journey. This is how I was able to start to get sleep, get perspective, and make some sense out of the seemingly nonsensical. Obviously, the world has changed since we last sat down with Israel declaring war. How Should Christians think about this? Also, there are some college shootings that you probably haven't heard about and there are some frustrating reasons why. Lastly, Brandon walks us through an encounter he had with some college students from the SDA church who had 'nice phrases' for encouraging the people of Silver Spring, Maryland. How do you feel about Christian sayings that have become more cultural than accurate?Support the showPlease Rate & Comment!Hosts: Brandon and Daren SmithWebsite: www.blackandblurred.comPatreon: www.patreon.com/blackandblurredYouTube: Black and Blurred PodcastIG: @BlackandBlurredPodcastTwitter: @Blurred_Podcast

Becky Baudouin offers helpful encouragement for moms. She examines some parenting platitudes that well-intentioned people say—such as “Enjoy every minute!” or “Being a mom is the hardest job in the world.” With biblical truth, gritty honesty, and personal stories, Becky bolsters moms in the thick of it and, as someone who has “been there”, offers them a breath of fresh air. "You can't redead the dead by you saying something shit," says Cariad Lloyd of Griefcast and author of You Are Not Alone; nevertheless when you're bereaved, people still are usually so nervous to say the wrong thing that they often don't say anything at all. And especially not the word 'dead'. Maybe what we need, says council funeral officer Evie King, author of Ashes To Admin, is a "jazzy snazzy term for death, the 'bottomless brunch' of death..." Content warning: this episode is about death*. And it contains mentions of cancer and Parkinson's, and there are several category B swears and one category A swear. *But it's a pretty fun listen, it doesn't get sad. Can gratitude be more than just a platitude? Our guest today argues: yes. DaRa Williams is a longtime practitioner and teacher of meditation. She is one of the guiding teachers at Insight Meditation Society, a graduate of the Spirit Rock Insight Meditation Society Teacher Training Program, and also has a clinical mental health private practice in Manhattan. DaRa also says, only semi-facetiously, that she believes gratitude can be considered the fifth Brahma Vihara. In this conversation we talk about:How to start knitting gratitude into your everyday lifeWhether gratitude is possible when everything sucksHow to avoid spiritual bypassThe opportunity that suffering brings for happinessHow to take our suffering less personallyThe power of reminding yourself that you are natureAnd our unconscious fascination with creating difficultyFull Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/dara-williams-295-rerunSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
