A friendship that was forged at Podfest has led to a one-of-a-kind episode here on That Entrepreneur Show. Buckle up for the Tao of Podcasting with Charlie Birney. Some areas of discussion include:Sense of arrivalPerception your name bringsBalancing both sides Valuing the silence before the sound“The Tao of Podcasting”Meet Charlie: I am Co-founder of Podville Media, an HD video and audio media production studio located in Washington, DC. Podville Media began as Podcast Village, in a co-working office in Gaithersburg, Maryland. I had loved public speaking and acting in school and was tremendously excited about podcasting and what it could mean for communications and storytelling. As a result of my early experience, I am co-author of “Podcasting Made Simple” (on Amazon, but largely outdated due to software and hardware developments. However you can see my early podcast sketches in the book!).Prior to Podville Media, I spent over 25 years in the DC/MD/VA commercial real estate market, most notably as a team member for planning, permitting, building and managing the two courses at Queenstown Harbor Golf, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Additionally, I served as president of both the Maryland Tourism Council and the National Golf Course Owner's Association. Podville has been up and sprinting now for over five years, and in 2023 we won three Tellys (the Tellys are in their 44th year) and have a show, Rap Stories, in the number one spot on Apple for podcasts in the music category. We're continuing our language vibe this week on #fofcpod episode! First, you'll hear from Juan Pablo Pérez, audio manager of Fare of the Free Child, as he shares his thoughts on Episode 241: Freeing Your Approach to Language Studies (with Marley Richards). He talks about his experience as a Spanish native speaker who, like Marley, taps into language as a way of developing an identity that includes more than the culture he was born into. Juan's interests in music, for example, sit outside his cultural background, and those experiences help Juan Pablo to feel a strong sense of self that isn't limited by location or familiarity. For the rest of the episode, Akilah gives us some gems about the importance of language and the many ways we can engage it as parts of our unschooling and deschooling practices. And of course, #maddquestionaskin is all up and through the episode. Is there a difference between a definition of a word and an understanding of a word? How have words evolved from having a definition to having a meaning?Akilah refers to language as something that goes beyond the accent and vocabulary, and something we can see as being part of a whole culture and context, and not some isolated thing that we pluck from a culture.Who is this language tied to?What are some of the non-verbal cues of this culture? How can I learn more about body language, symbols, and other elements of communication and culture?Akilah shared some of the conversation she had with Zakiyya Ismail (at the Summerhill Festival of Childhood) about the evolution of these particular words in their unschooling journeys:LearningPowerTrustCommunityResistanceAkilah pulled a card from the Raising Free People practice decks and invited us this activity:Think about these words (that comprise this deck),Choose two or three of them and sit with the evolution of your understanding of that word.Akilah explains through her experience with Spanish the insights and learning process of making associations. She also talks about words that are very specific to her practices and the understanding of them. She then reflects on the her experiences that came with recognizing herself as both oppressed to oppressor, and how that shows up in her motherwork.LIBERATION WALKListen and jam along with Miss Lou - Long time Gal on Bajanbloom Bloom's Youtube channelAkilah would love to receive some feedback about this episode. Welcome #fofcpod fam! Today's vibe is insightful conversation about language acquisition, culture, and how to learn stuff, with seventeen year-old unschooler, Marley Richards. Japanese and Korean languages are integrated parts of Marley's daily practices, so she shares with us some of the ways these languages have influenced and impacted her identity as a Black girl. Marley also speaks about some of the tools she uses for language study. What are some ways you can support your/a child in expanding their experience with a language they want to learn? #maddquestionaskinLong story-short…Many children are learning Japanese and Korean as a result of their appreciation for Anime and K-pop culture. Marley was among them; she started learning Japanese at around age 7 or 8, when she got passionate about Anime. Soon enough she started feeling the limitations of the translation that she was getting from English subtitles, and felt she was getting a diluted version of what the people who made the thing had intended. By learning Japanese, she felt a wider understanding of the world as language was connected to other elements of life, and of her interests, and of broader world culture. For Marley, studying a language went beyond grammar and accent, and transformed into a way of being and living.Marley's key elements for language study:Being highly motivated and intentionalFull exposure to the foreign language - Immersive experienceMaking associations from what you already knowJapanese tip: Anime series help in general with the nouns, verbs, and sentence construction BUT in terms of vocabulary and accent you should check for a different sourceAkilah shares her own learning process and experience with Spanish (check below for some resources). Then, she and Marley chat about the expectations people might have based on language stereotypes and assumptions people may make about others. If you integrate different elements from another culture, does that make you less Black, Korean, Latinx…? #maddquestionaskinLIBERATION WALKCheck out these Spanish sources that Akilah has been nurturing from: Erica Ray and Mike BenAlso, go and see Mike's video: How to Find a Good Language Tutor/Language Exchange Partner - Things to Look Out Forhttps://howtospanishpodcast.com/ This is another dope Spanish language learning resource (podcast)Akilah would love to receive some feedback about this episode. This week on #fofcpod we are closing the Māori Mother Wisdom series about liberation-centered parenting and living. We've had the pleasure of connecting with Māori stories from Mea Rapata, Angella Smith, Moana Reihana, and Tina Talaić. These are select excerpts from our feel trip (live group meetups about our episodes), where Akilah and our series co-producer, Ieishah Clelland-Lang, vibed with Mea, Angella, and some of our Village family. We reflect on the importance of the trustworthiness of feelings, and the levels of connection that live inside active listening, and non-verbal language, as well as other kinds of human technology like collaboration, echolocation, identity and community-building.Who we innately are - The Energy of Feelingshow aspects of Māori spaces have been compromised by colonialismthe significance of going back into a knowledge space that recognizes connection to land, ancestors and relationshipsan intrinsic feeling and connection to their original epistemologies.“We don't have to compress what we are in order to be together”. Akilah S RichardsAngella also points out the sacredness of their indigenous language Te Reo Māori (Māori language) and how important it is to speak up and take action to keep the integrity and the sacredness. We also chat about identity and the mindful work of looking at your indigeneity, and looking beyond the labels so it can open up spaces to regenerate, heal, and identify with authenticity. In case you haven't heard the previous conversations we've had on this topic, be sure to listen to Māori Mother Wisdom series from the start:Episode 237: On Māori Mother Wisdom (The Language Episode)Episode 238: On Māori Mother Wisdom (The ‘Old Knowings' Episode)Episode 239: Vibin' off Māori Mother Wisdom (The ‘Feedback' Episode)Don't miss next week's episode! #MaddquestionaskinWhat does it mean to own your sense of sovereignty?Welcome to another #fofcpod episode. As you know we're in the thick of the wonderful Māori Mother Wisdom series, and are vibrating with gratitude for your engagement with us, in all of this goodness. We kick off this episode with feedback from author, speaker, activist and educator Sonya Renee Taylor who has been listening to this series and loving it! We also share some feedback we've gotten from Jonie, Yolande, Got2BOshun, and Kateri (thank y'all!). Then Akilah and Ieishah Clelland-Lang revisit some gems from these previous conversations, and speak about migration, reparenting, echolocation (yes, chile!), unschooling, and then some.Don't miss our Feel Trip to close out the Māori Mother Wisdom series, where Akilah and Ieishah will kick it with the Village family, and a few of our series guests are slated to join the chat. It's happening Friday, December 3rd. Join our Podcast Village so you don't miss any of our Feel Trip invitations.Akilah pulled a card from one of the Raising Free People practice decks:Reparenting: “No way around it, so gather some resources around your pain and change and growth and self-trust so that you can move out of situation and into self.”PAIN, SELF-TRUST, MOVE OUT…Akilah reflects on what moving away means, centering migration as a keyword in this conversation. They speak about looking back and respecting the past versions of themselves, appreciating the wisdom each has brought to them. What does it mean to move away from the elements of parenting that we were raised with? What positives and difficulties are implicit in quitting the parts that don't resonate with us? What is the cost we pay to seek our authentic selves? What are we currently moving away from?“Reparenting ourselves is not about what happened back then, but about what we have the right and the wisdom to do now.”Location system - Migrating into our authentic selfIeishah and Akilah talk about how the ability to "locate" ourselves in certain situations can be a form of good resistance, to how the knowledge of why we must observe, listen and question different mindsets and ideas, it's a never-ending process that evolves and changes all the time.“Trust, resistance, education, that's how I can put my understanding into practice”. Akilah S. RichardsReclaiming culture: Take and give backIeishah and Akilah speak to the relevance of culture and nature as key points in unschooling, and Ieishah brings more insights from her related experience at the unschooling camp in Aotearoa. They chat about the "intelligence energies" that come through the collective, as well as the importance of knowing when to be a witness, and how to "trust first."Check our Liberation Walk and a picture with the card that Akilah pulled at raisingfreepeople.com/239Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/akilah)
This week on #fofcpod, we're inquiring about the idea of an unbothered child. Is “unbothered” a status reserved for worthy adults? Or can children claim it too? We're moving through some thoughts around liberation work and education perceptions that center the decolonization of intergenerational practices, so this also means Madd Question Askin' time!Listen in as Akilah acknowledges how our family members and friends might feel about unschooling during the holidays, and some of them may not understand what unschooling and other types of Self-Directed Education look like. Because of this, they sometimes openly question some of the ideas and practices around them. How might we learn from their reactions and begin to recognize our mindful responses as actual skill sets? Here's a 2017 episode where Akilah points out a few specific ideas, and recommendations of what we can do: Episode 56: Managing Unschoolers' Holiday Anxiety.Excerpt source."Dis Long Time Gal Mi Neva See You""This is a song that tells of two people who have not seen each other for a long time. The singer invites the other party to allow him to hold her (gal/gyal) hand in a greeting as they wheel and turn and dance and jig.https://youtu.be/_Fy39wPedmYThe first video is of the legendary Jamaican icon, Mrs Louise Bennett Coverly, singing the song. She was very instrumental in breaking cultural barriers that saw the local language (patois) being frowned upon by the "most affluent" in the Jamaican society who would have preferred to have everyone speaking the adopted "Queens language" or proper English. Miss Lou (as she is fondly called, got people to accept the fact that our language is our language no matter whatever other language we may adopt. She also played a very instrumental role in the Jamaican folk songs rising to prominence."Madd Question Askin' out loud!!Do children get to be unbothered? We're closing out Tony Galloway's series on manhood and masculinity this week, and the convo, as usual, is fyah! Kris Richards joins Tony to wrap up this season's Fare of the Free (Man) Child series with reflections from past episodes and current events. The two talk about identity, adulthood, diversity, childhood, gender, manhood, power dynamics, masculinity, and some of the different labels around those topics. Because definitions are always going to be biased to our experiences, they discuss some of the ways their environment has molded them as they grew up, and reflect upon what they were taught compared to what they currently understand and feel about those definitions.People's commitment to labels - Category is… ManhoodTony and Kris also chat about the interactions that take place when we speak about power dynamics in manhood. They share their experiences and the way people label others in partnership, how people put so much trust in the traditional definitions of manhood and womanhood, and the issues therein. Then they talk about masculinity and its categories. They mention that this definition keeps changing based on varying ideas about manhood, including who men "should" want attention from, and the need to perform certain “male” characteristics to feel accepted or validated by the otherness.Marketing and shadow figuresPatriarchy and sexism leave serious damages in society, Tony talks about shadow figures that profit from polarizing and normalizing hegemonic discourses that benefit only a few.Tony's last four episodes:Episode 215: Fare of the Free Man Child (A Tony Galloway Ting).Episode 224: Deschooling Adulthood with Tony GallowayEpisode 232: Learning (and Unlearning) MasculinityEpisode 233: Deschooling Manhood and MasculinityLIBERATION WALKThe full conversation that includes 10 more minutes will be on patreon.com/akilah join us to have some moreGet to know more of Tony and check his artworkShare some thoughts by pressing that “Leave a Voice Message” button on the right side to let Tony know what do you think of this episodeJoin our Podcast Village and don't miss any of our Feel Trip invitations!Subscribe to Akilah's Youtube ChannelSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/akilah)
Welcome to another #fofcpod episode! As you know, October is Fare of the Free Man Child month, so get comfy and join our special host Tony Galloway Jr. in conversation with ten of his college fellas: Elijah Martin, Terry Lyles, Travis Amsterdam, Markyle Rondon, Kyle Moore, Sheps King, Fred Spite, Henri Battiste, Deshon Jones, and Curtis Webb. Each shares their thoughts on gender roles, accountability, and the complexity in naming masculinity due to the many layers around its meaning. Tony and friends navigate and question some of the previous notions and narratives they had around manhood and identity, like what it means to be strong, to be the provider and other stereotypically masculine qualities. They also speak about their experiences growing up and the patterns they began to unlearn throughout that journey. They explore some of the ways their understanding of the relationships and interactions between the masculine and the feminine have changed over time. They pose questions like, what does deschooling manhood and masculinity look like? This group also chat about the balance between intuition and rationality, which characteristics or qualities are part of that dichotomy, and how rich it is to find different shades within it. Deep and interesting convos up in here, so you don't want to miss them!In case you haven't heard previous episodes go ahead and check them all:Episode 215: Fare of the Free Man Child (A Tony Galloway Ting).Episode 224: Deschooling Adulthood with Tony GallowayEpisode 232: Learning (and Unlearning) MasculinityLIBERATION WALKFollow Tony on Instagram!Share some thoughts by pressing that “Leave a Voice Message” button on the right side to let Tony know what do you think of this episodeJoin our Podcast Village and don't miss any of our Feel Trip invitations!Subscribe to Akilah's Youtube ChannelSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/akilah)
Welcome #fofcpod fam! We are so excited to share a new episode with our special host Anthony “Tony” Galloway Jr. This is Tony's third venture on the Fare of the Free Man Child series. If you missed the first two episodes go check them out:Episode 215: Fare of the Free Man Child (A Tony Galloway Ting).Episode 224: Deschooling Adulthood with Tony GallowayIn this episode Tony and two of his college roommates, Anthony D. Janifer and Stanley D. Cochran Jr., explore their perspectives around masculinity and manhood. They question, among other topics, the way they perform their masculinity and the patterns and distinctions around it, they also speak about personal relationships, power relationships, dating, shadow work, gender, stereotypes, and sexuality. Defining manhood can be a tricky task, even more so when you live exposed to dominant stereotypes of what masculine or feminine bodies and attitudes are supposed to be. Tony and his friends chat about their experiences and the way each of their environments and families modeled or influenced them to think masculinity in certain ways. What we are supposed to be | We don't want to be “weak”Vulnerability is seen as a weakness and something more characteristic of the feminine, this makes us question toxic masculinity. Is the version that we got around masculinity so narrow that it starts devaluing femininity? Men that embody certain mannerisms or sensitive attitudes tend to be mocked and categorized in a negative way as “less of a man.” Tony and friends discuss how these stereotypes make us more aware of the aspects within ourselves that we might shift just to fit in outdated “standards” that we must overcome. They also speak about feminine and masculine seen as energy and the balance in knowing when to show up, because Identity cannot be limited, it's a wide spectrum of definitions and nuances, defined by culture and context.LIBERATION WALKGet to know more of Tony and check his artwork here.Share some thoughts by pressing that “Leave a Voice Message” button on the right side to let Tony know what do you think of this episodeSubscribe to Akilah's Youtube ChannelJoin our Podcast Village and don't miss any of our Feel Trip invitations! This episode is so that we can bring some new moon energies as we understand them, to some of Akilah's mother's work, to the ways that she is continuing to understand resistance from the perspective of her daughters resisting things, sometimes resisting her, but other times resisting things that she feels like they should not resist, things that they should accept, things that feel important or healthy for them to accept. If you've been rocking with us here, you know we've talked about versions of this many times over in past episodes in terms of resistance as a roadmap. Also in terms of recognizing ourselves as oppressors (potentially and sometimes realized) in our relationships with children, particularly if we live with them. This episode closes with #maddquestionaskin about resistance. Here are some of the questions that popped up for Akilah. Listen to the full episode for the full list.Is resistance the problem? Or is it the map?How might my excavation, exploration, invitations around this have helped me not to force my children to accept something I feel that they should accept? Or believe? Or know? How have I resisted and how has my resistance saved me?What has my resistance cost me?What is my personal experience with resistance in children? What am I willing to do with this experience of resistance?(This particular question can be good for, at the moment, when you're in the middle of a space of resistance with a young person)Do I recognize questioning as my right? After a conversation about the status of podcast listening trends and the steady increase in advertising dollars (“Podcast Advertising To Surpass $1B This Year,” according to a podcast revenue study conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers and shared by Jeff) the guys talked about new hires at Podcast Village, soon to be Podville Media. Charlie gave an update on the Bethesda podcast meetup group and Sound Engineer Robb Spewak offered another tip, this time resulting in the show’s first bleep!
The show opened on a down note, as Jeff and Charlie discussed news that Maddy (“here are the guys!”) Masiello will be leaving Podcast Village (soon to be Podville Media) for New York City. We wish her well and hope she doesn’t forget us. The guys continued their discussion about Room Rater and adding an audio rating system. They also shared frustrations with social media dashboards and boring automated posts (“Happy Arbor Day!”), many of which get zero engagement. Sound engineer Robb Spewak is back with another podcasting tip, this time on filling the silence during interviews.
To mark International Women’s Day today, March 8, organizers are asking participants to “choose to challenge” and call out gender bias and inequality with the hope that from challenge will come change – something that women entrepreneurs desperately need when it comes to funding their businesses.
Jeff’s daughter Isabel goes to Eddie’s to purchase the ingredients for the now-viral TikTok Pasta and catches the eye of the cheese counter worker and even the cashier who both know what she’ll be making! Charlie talks about another use of QR codes, this time guiding him through the assembly of his new NordicTrack. Podcast Village, soon to be Podville Media, is helping a client create content for Twitch and the guys discuss ways to find podcasts.
Yes, that’s what op-ed stands for! Jeff shared the latest thinking on op-eds, thanks to a National Press Club webinar he attended featuring op-ed experts Sam Ryan and Robby Schrum of Keybridge Communications. Takeaways included “don’t yell” and “don’t be boring.” Listen for more! Also, Charlie did the show from Studio M2 on M Street and gave a shout out to podcaster Anne Pasmanick whose Power Station turns 150! (episodes). One of the very first clients we had when Podcast Village restarted in Glover Park was the amazing Anne Pasmanick. She saw past our literal sawdust and had an amazing vision for a show that would talk about community needs and so much more. And now she has hosted over 150 episodes of this unique and important show. Charlie often talks about Power Station to his friends and wished all high school and college seniors would be asked to listen to any three episodes. It will change your perspective forever.
We're joined at the end of 2020 by Ben Hobbs, Special Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy at the White House. Ben talks his roots in Ohio (including his first business selling chicken eggs), solutions to eliminating poverty that go beyond government programs, and America's eternal ability to resiliently recover from difficult times – even a pandemic. Plus, Sarah declines to share her number one song from 2020, and Laura manages once again to make aliens a focal point of the conversation. Joyfully recorded in-person at Podcast Village! Subscribe to the show and rate it wherever you listen. You can email us at podcast@nacced.org and follow the show on Twitter at @HousingPodcast. Thanks for listening!
The guys talk about the latest Edison Report on podcast listening trends and of course the upcoming interview with TikTok Tammy, who just appeared on Steve Harvey’s show with a surprise appearance by Mufasa (@mufasatweetss on Twitter and @cousinskeether on Instagram). During Episode 15 they talked about Mark Twain and how he might view podcasting, and this week they had a similar discussion about Ernest Hemingway. Finally, Charlie talks about a recent episode of All the Best, a podcast produced by Podcast Village for the George and Barbara Bush Foundation and hosted by grandson, Sam LeBlond. All the Best features interviews with George H. W. and Barbara Bush’s family, friends, former colleagues and fellow Points of Light with a special emphasis on service to others. Episode 44 with presidential biographer Jon Meacham included a few comments by Meacham that really stood out for Charlie.
Mike has a heated exchange with a contractor. Plus: a big Podcast Village move... Oscar's hat, and Robb's extended family Zoom reunion.
Jeff participated in a Twitter chat and shared his experience, this one with Julia Angelen Joy’s #PrimeTimePRchat where participants shared thoughts and ideas on diversity and inclusion challenges facing the PR and communications industry, including the woke-washing problem. Charlie talks about a “conversation cluster” by Talkwalker (and shared via Twitter by Sophie Clark) showing today’s top podcast topics. Leading the way: Social Justice podcasts, and Charlie gives a shout out to Organize Your Butterflies, an original podcast of YWCA produced by Podcast Village.
Jeff and Charlie talk about the early days of Podcast Village, when we shared microphones and worked out of a co-working space in Gaithersburg, Md. Look at us now! A shout-out to long-time friend and an early guest, Garret Ohm, and the risks of being a social media early adopter, including the time we ran a golf charity tournament and gave sleeves of Pro VIs to anyone who checked in on Foursquare! Yep, Jeff, Charlie and Garret were the only ones who walked away with sleeves. Jeff, who earlier in his career worked as a reporter at The Capital newspaper in Annapolis, talks about Tribune Publishing’s decision to close the newspaper’s office/newsroom, forcing reporters to do their work from home, from coffee shops and from their cars. Not good.
Mike is a convention addict. Plus: An Oscar's mom update... Mike in the locker room, and a new member of the Podcast Village team!
This episode was recorded minutes after Charlie shared the story of Podcast Village during the Podfest Global Summit. He went on right after Tina Dietz of Twin Flames Studios and global business celebrity and podcast host Jeffrey Hayzlett. Charlie did not disappoint as he shared images from the early days in Gaithersburg, Md. and the path toward today’s state-of-the-art studio on M Street. Jeff’s ah-ha moment came when Tina talked about the need for C-level execs who are being evaluated for CEO and Board posts to demonstrate their ability to navigate an interview. Many are taking to podcasts to share their voice and grow their brands. Perhaps there’s a need for a new form of media training to take advantage of this opportunity.
Charlie shares the story about sending coffee cakes to business associates and co-workers at Podcast Village. And the range of surprising reactions such a well-meaning gesture elicits! Jeff has been on the webinar circuit, this time speaking on crisis communications as part of PRSA Maryland’s weekly chat series. Plus a shout-out to Trevor Davis and the Downcast app during our Cool Tools segment..
In this episode we talk about selecting the right social channels, Jeff’s early adoption of TikTok and how Podcast Village uses IGTV to promote The Mike O’Meara Show and other podcasts. Jeff reports on his Zoom experience attending the Society for Health Communication and PRSA’s Counselors Academy including a digital networking Happy Hour tribute that actually worked. Charlie wonders how the golf association annual conference will change. Tips include following the official hashtag, interact on Twitter, and connect on LinkedIn; the smaller roundtable Zoom calls better. Jeff’s hearing how the next covid-19 challenge for communicators is to prep for the anti-vaxers.
Adam rants about coaches punting late in playoff games, Bryan brings pizza in the studio and Joey rants about the cheating Astros. The boys hit all their classics, Guy Crush Girl Crush, Dude Food, Player and Winner of the Week and NetClix. This is the second episode of our new show recorded and produced by Podcast Village. Episodes drop every Friday, pregame weekly with us.
Join me for an entirely different kind of Power Station episode. This is a look back, with the very talented audio engineer and producer Rob Ford, at why I created Power Station, how personal experience shaped my vision for nonprofit advocacy, the under-reported role of nonprofits in crafting policy solutions to seemingly intractable societal problems and how our guests are thriving in unimaginably challenging times. We talk through the defining characteristics shared by Power Station guests, including their lived experience with the communities they serve and ability to pivot when political circumstances require it. And we credit their influence on democratic candidates whose policy positions on issues ranging from climate change to housing are based in research, data and analysis generated by local and national nonprofits. I express my gratitude to friends and colleagues, including Luis Granados and John Holdsclaw, who have been advisors and supporters since I first thought of creating Power Station as a platform for amplifying the voices of nonprofit change makers. There are many more stories to tell and Power Station intends to tell them. I am grateful to my guests for sharing their vision and to Podcast Village for making it possible.
Mike gets an early Christmas surprise! Plus... we do a Podcast Village run-down, Robb snark, Rob Ford, marriage and Peloton action!
Your HOME girls are back and recording in a new studio! In this episode, Sarah, Katelynn and Laura get you caught up on just what's been going on with NACCED while the show's been on hiatus, while also being totally wowed by their new surroundings at Podcast Village. Totes legit and profesh. Plus, Laura threatens to give out pocket Constitutions to trick-or-treaters, Sarah clarifies that her family does NOT live in a cranberry bog, and Katelynn promises to make everyone lumpia. Then everyone reveals the Twitter pseudonym they'd use if they were a politician (a la Pierre Delecto). Major thanks to our new home, Podcast Village. Welcome to Heather's Spooke Podcast, discussing true crime and paranormal phenomenon. This first episode looks at Dudleytown in Connecticut. It is also referred to as the Village of the Damned. We don't believe Dudleytown is actually haunted but did enjoy discussing the area and the owners!
Tøyen Podcast Village invited Siri from New Story Hub to host a series of lectures. The first one was given by Tone Smith and was entitled degrowth and ecological economics. It has long been admitted that the level of accumulated human activity on Earth and our material consumption is problematic for the environment. While the mainstream response is to look for technological solutions to environmental problems, there exists a range of other, more integrated, responses to and understandings of the economic-environmental interactions. Ecological economics is an economic theory that sees the economy as embedded in the biophysical reality. This starting point leads to very different understanding of how to think about economy-nature relationships. Degrowth is another alternative paradigm that questions the modern culture of always striving for more, the economic paradigm which is part of this modernity, and the development model exported to all parts of the world.
This week, ‘Tana and Travis prepare for Santana's Fathers Day magazine spread. Also, should the 'Skins create a position for Samaje Perine? What's going on in the D.R. … and why is Podcast Village crawling with kids? Plus, an entire Nation takes a disgraceful “L” (we blame Drake).
Community Leader and Host of THE POWER STATION Podcast Anne Pasmanick and PODCAST VILLAGE founder Charlie Birney sit in on the Roundtable to discuss affordable housing, immigration, the role of migrant workers in our economy, and even gentrification!
Most business decision makers understand the need for a positive brand voice when it comes to advertising and public relations, but too many are tone deaf in response to negative media attention. We discuss several high profile examples from the world of high fashion that have been in the news recently. Pritch defines brand tone deafness as: “A lack of situational awareness and/or understanding of the business environment.” So how can you protect your business from brand tone deafness? We’ll tell you. Amongst other tactical advice, we will discuss thinking like the consumer, not a content creator, not falling in love with your ideas until being tested by others and the “12 year old boy” rule. What’s that? Listen to find out. Shoutout to our new friends at the Podcast Village in DC. We took a tour of their top-notch facility right before we shot this impromptu episode from our room in The Wink Hotel. On each episode of the #NeoMarketing podcast, The Golding Group partners Pritch Pritchard, APR and Kyle Golding briefly (12-15 mins.) discuss best practices, latest trends and modern techniques for professional business communications including advertising, marketing, digital channels, social media, public relations and alternative options. Jeremie Greer, VP, Policy and Research, at Prosperity Now, gets real from the onset of our conversation at Podcast Village. Poverty cannot be overcome by personal discipline alone. It requires systemic change, which Prosperity Now, and its Network of Champions, community-based nonprofits, advocate for using research, data and on-the-ground experience. We discuss Prosperity Now's champions, including Catalyst Miami, the necessity to grapple with and address the Racial Wealth Gap, the promise of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Trump Administration's unbridled efforts to dismantle the agency. Jeremie talks about the power of the constituent voice and the responsibility of national nonprofits to mobilize and harness that voice on Capitol Hill. Jeremie invites us to register for the upcoming Prosperity Summit, which brings together over 1,000 advocates for wealth building. Learn more at https://prosperitynow.org
On this episode of Bootstrapped, our executive producer switched to the special guest chair as we interviewed UMD alumnus Oscar Zeballos EMBA ’16, co-founder of Podcast Village and executive producer of Bootstrapped. Often, podcasters have a difficult time nailing every aspect of their show as they don’t always have the resources or know-how. To resolve this pain point, Oscar created Podcast Village to provide a turnkey solution for podcasters to collaborate and create their video or audio show at the highest level possible. On this episode of Bootstrapped, Oscar discusses the business model behind Podcast Village, the future he sees for podcasting and how he leveraged his network and unfair advantages to bring his vision to fruition.

BUSINESS AND MARKETING PODCAST WITH NINA RADETICH This episode of the Select Business Team podcast is a conversation with Nina Radetich who is a newscaster turned marketing consultant and the owner of Radetich Marketing. We are talking about my favorite tactic, podcasting for sales. The recording is actually the audio from a FB live interview she did with me on her show Small Biz Power where she interviews business owners in the studio on FB live. She was in her studio in Las Vegas, I was in the local recording studio of Podcast Village in MD. For me, it was my first FB live which I also think is a great way for a business to reach a wider audience. Nina and I are partnering to help sales teams create a podcasting for sales program. We provide them with a proven strategy to open doors for new business. We’ll help them create a show that is sustainable, delivers an intended message and builds relationships. This is what we talk about this in the interview as well as some of the challenges businesses owners face. Sending emails, cold calling and direct mail doesn’t usually work on the first attempt. When you invite someone to be on your podcast and share their knowledge, you will get results. In addition to interviewing your ideal client, there are significant benefits once your podcast has been published. A podcast will help you build: A content marketing machine for your organization Relationships with the right individuals Authority in your industry Community around your brand PODCASTING FOR SALES SYSTEM Before starting a podcast, we recommend you build a strategy around your new media platform. When we work with clients, we start with a plan as we know this will set you up for success. Your podcast strategy should: Reflect your company brand Focus on conversations with guests who are your ideal clients Include graphics for your website and social media platforms Identify website content format Create an invitation sequence and a follow up system for your guests Determine your equipment and recording strategy Outline your post production process As you will see in this interview, we are both extremely excited about this concept. If you want to schedule a consultation with us to see how we might create a podcast for your organization, click on this link and schedule a time that works for you. You can also call us at 301 996-2328. Let's talk about how a podcast would benefit your sales team. Today we are talking with Charlie Birney of Podcast Village. Charlie isn’t a member of Select, but if you heard the last episode, which was our anniversary episode, I mentioned Charlie and how we connected. Through podcasting, we have built a great friendship and support each other’s businesses.I bring my business and marketing skills to the mix and he brings the technical pieces of recording and editing to the table. If I never had to research equipment or edit another episode, I’d be extremely happy, yet that’s at the core of his business, so we compliment each other from a business perspective. If you follow me on FB you’ll see several pictures of me recording in his studio. In episode 12 with Adam Solomon and episode 23 with Becky Briggs, we were recording in the studios of podcast Village. Recently I was in his studio doing a video recording of how to use a piece of podcast recording equipment. So in addition to recording podcasts, Podcast Village is also offering video production and they are knocking it out of the park. Check out their video’s on youtube which I’ve linked to in the show notes. Check out their youtube channel here. In my conversation with Charlie, we talk about the business of having a podcast studio, how the idea evolved and then turning an opportunity into a business. This is music to my ears because I love talking about business and I’m all about podcasting these days. If you are a salesperson, sales manager, business owner or someone responsible for business development in your organization, I’ve put together something unique for you that I’ll discuss at the end of this show, so be sure to stick around after our conversation ends. Charlie is going through the school of hard knocks. He took an idea, started a business and is learning how to run the business along the way. It’s not always easy, but if you love what you do and you surround yourself with knowledgeable people, you will make it work! I love Charlie’s enthusiasm and like me, he’s an idea person! Our conversation goes in many directions, but three important areas we discuss are The importance of setting up procedures from the beginning Not working for free And paying attention to your time management This conversation isn’t just about running a business, but about podcasts and the value they bring. At one point we start talking about a conference that we both attended in early 2017 where I mention some statistics about podcasting. I’m attaching a few of the slides in the shownotes, so if you would like to see them go to selectbizteam.com/podcastvillage. Definitely good information particularly for someone that might be thinking about adding a podcast as a sales tool! Before we get started, I’d like to ask that you go to iTunes and leave us a review. It’s helps us to know if you like what you are hearing! If you aren’t sure how to do this, look at the resources in the show notes at selectbizteam.com/podcastvillage. If you have an iPhone, you’ll find this quite simple. RESOURCES PODCASTING FOR SALES Ready to get in front of new prospects? A podcast is a great sales tool. If you are a sales person or knows someone that is involved in sales, I’ve created an information packet that shows you how to use a podcast as a sales tool. Download here. It’s free! STATISTICS In this episode we talk about a few statistics we learned about at a conference. The picture below was taken from the conference Podfest. BUSINESS AND MARKETING 1st ANNIVERSARY EPISODE Thank you for joining us today for episode 25 of the Select Business Team podcast. I’m so exicted about this episode because it marks the 1st year of creating this podcast. Select Business Team brings business professionals together to discuss options for growing and expanding business with a focus on marketing, leadership and revenue and our podcast provides conversations with business owners on similar topics. Since today is our 1st anniversary, we are celebrating and this episode is packed full of information to help you, the business professional. The overall theme is lessons I’ve learned from this first year of production, but there are several valuable ideas that I share as I’m talking. The first few minutes you’ll hear me thank a few people that stepped up to the plate to really help this podcast get started, then the real nuggets begin. In addition to thanking a few people, I also share with your my personal insights about this journey. If you are looking for marketing ideas, keep listening, because you'll hear several. Here’s a little bit of what you can expect: Challenges people have being interviewed on an podcast Time management issues of creating a podcast What’s in the analytics - can you guess what country gets more listens than my own state? The bigger vision for podcasts At the very end I'll mention a new program I'm launching called Next Level Referrals. If you want to build a solid referral business, it's worth listening to the end and getting the details! Lets get this 1st anniversary episode started. It’s hard to believe that it has been 12 months since we launched the podcast for Select Business Team. Today I want to share my appreciation for those that have made this journey possible and talk about a few lessons learned along the way. It has been such an interesting experience, but in reality, this might not have ever started if it wasn’t for two very special people. You see, I had been thinking about a podcast for a long time. I tried to recruit my son to help me but he wasn’t interested. Then one day I was talking to Ben Piper, who is the owner of Commonwealth Consulting Group and an SBT member. Somehow we got on the subject of podcasts and he said he had one. Truly I was in awe and he could see my excitement. He volunteered to show me how to get started. Otherwise, I might still be talking about it and not taken action! Initially, I was intimidated, but after hours of research, it wasn’t as hard as I thought. The hardest part is making time, which I’ll talk about shortly. Shortly after showing me the equipment, Ben told me about a meetup group for podcasters and encouraged me to attend. That’s where I met Charlie Birney of Podcast Village who has been a true inspiration for me. He’s got a heart of gold and is always sharing his knowledge and offers his studio at a discount to members of meetup. I’ve done a lot of recordings at his studio and we share ideas regularly. You’ll hear him on an upcoming episode. Again, a big thanks to Ben and Charlie for helping me get started and bringing this podcast vision to life. THANK YOU One other person that I’d like to thank is Rick Becker. He’s someone I went to high school with and while we didn’t really know each other then, we reconnected through a mutual friend and he’s become my running partner. He’s got a great voice and after a lot of convincing, he agreed to do the intro for my podcast. When we recorded the intro, I truly didn’t have any idea what I was doing. I didn’t know about voice levels and how to set the microphone on the recording software. We did several ‘takes’ and thanks to my amazing editor Evan, we have an intro that I love! So thanks Rick, and to his wife Susie for putting up with me and Evan for all of your hard work. When I first launched the podcast, the plan was to interview members of Select Business Team and use the podcast as a mem...
It’s always fun to talk to folks who have created podcast specific workstations and today’s chat is no exception. Joining us, is Charlie Birney, co-founder and executive director at Podcast Village in Gaithersburg, MD.
Business and Marketing Podcast with Adam Solomon. Recording this episode with Adam Solomon is one of the most fun we’ve had, mostly because we are actually recording in a podcast studio. Usually we record in our guests office or they come to our headquarters. We’ve had one recording where we recorded via skype. Today, we are in the studios of Podcast Village, using professional equipment with an engineer monitoring sound. It’s just a fun experience. Maybe one day Select Business Team will have it's own studio with our own in-house engineer, although our editor, Evan, does a great job once we finish the recordings! Adam Solomon is a talent acquisition recruiter and he’s been at the forefront of technology for a long time. Adam is the owner of DC Tech Search and he helps employers find qualified candidates for technology development and engineering projects. You have to speak the lingo and understand the business in order to find the candidates and Adam has the background. In some segments of the technology industry, there aren’t enough candidates to fill a lot of the positions. One of the area's we talk about is how he sells the sizzle to get candidates to consider moving to a new position! A few other areas we dive into include: Build your company and focus on the brand, not on promoting the founder. How to make a company recession proof The value of having your office outside of your home Adam has started 4 companies, learning lessons from each venture. He shares some of the ups and downs of starting each business and what he’s done differently with the last business to make it a success. It’s good information for every business owner. When recording this episode, we noted we might be over 500 downloads when this episode goes live. At the launch of episode 12 we are over 700 downloads. Thank you everyone for listening and sharing the word about this podcast. RESOURCES Virtual Communication Tools this article provides some insight about g-chat and slack Podcast Village - many thanks to our friends at Podcast Village who have a podcasting studio where you can record and have your podcasts edited. Great people, great environment and a great end product! Virtual offices we discussed in episode 4 ABOUT OUR GUEST – ADAM SOLOMON Adam Solomon is the owner of DC Tech Search. John Wyndham's 1957 novel “The Midwich Cuckoos” is the foundation for Wolf Rilla's 1960 film “Village of the Damned.” It's hard to say which title may actually be worse, but the story in both seems to work for most people. It's a decent sci-fi story that, while dated, creates an interesting scenario with all the women in a village being impregnated at the same time by some alien force. Even with that interesting scenario, however, for every element that works in favor of the film, there seems to be another working against it. At least with today's eyes. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our Naughty Children series with Rilla's 1960 film “Village of the Damned.” We talk about what works and what doesn't, as well as why some of that matters more when it comes to actual enjoyment of the film (at least for Andy) and what they could have done to make it better. We chat about the performances, notably George Sanders, Barbara Shelley and Martin Stephens, and what they bring to the table. When it comes to Shelley, we also chat about the fact that her part is largely dismissed and why it bothers us so much. We discuss the look of the film with Rilla's documentary approach as well as cinematographer Geoffrey Faithfull's overall look, which worked nicely for us. And we look at MGM's history with the film and touch on why they filmed it in England instead of Hollywood. It's a fun film that, if you think too much about, you'll find tons of problems; Pete sees the problems while Andy sees the fun. Check out the movie then tune in!
