Divorce can be a chaotic time. And while you're rebuilding your life, you catch yourself being pulled at every side – friends asking for the exclusive scoop, seeing your ex get into a new relationship, or sulking in pity that you're never going to be in love again. Divorced Girl Smiling creator Jackie Pilossoph wants you to regain your focus and take control of what truly matters… without being so hard on yourself.  Isn't it amazing that you get to create something new? Now's the time to give yourself grace and make the most of your clean slate. Tune in to this episode on Staying Empowered and Focused In Your Divorce with Jackie Pilossoph Key points covered in this episode:   ✔️ Schedule time to feel your emotions. The most upsetting news could break out while you're in front of your loved ones. And while hiding your feelings is helpful. Not sparing time to express it at all can be detrimental. If crying at a later time is difficult, journaling is a discreet way to release.  ✔️ Make room for goodness to crowd out the negativity. Instead of allowing your worries to take up your time and energy, take a deep breath and recalibrate your focus. Get busy and fill your mind with gratitude.  ✔️ You have power over how you feel. Even without a significant other, you can be secure in yourself by doing the work on your self-worth and confidence and creating the life you want.  ✔️ Fix yourself to be in the best position to meet new partners. It's not the people or your location. It's your mindset and how you show up on dates. Have you aligned yourself to your highest, most authentic self? This will help you to attract the right people.  ✔️ Start small and do what makes you happy! Be open to new experiences, revisit old hobbies you've once enjoyed, and take baby steps. The universe will notice your hard work and your little actions will build into something bigger. Jackie Pilossoph is the creator and Editor-in-chief of DIVORCED GIRL SMILING, a media company comprised of a website, podcast, mobile app, and professional resources. On today's episode, I have the joy of speaking with Divorced Girl Smiling, Jackie Pilossoph. Jackie is such a light in this world, and a leader in helping connect those going through a divorce with the best resources out there. We talk about what it feels like to end any type of relationship, whether it be a friendship or a romantic partnership, the pain is similar and can turn your world upside down. Jackie talks about leaning in to your feelings and emotions in order to come out on the other side stronger. Tune in to hear the positivity that Jackie radiates and how to understand why the heartbreak hurts so much in the first place. In this episode: [2:10] Jackie shares what led her down the path to be the Divorced Girl Smiling. [5:10] What made Jackie write her article about heartbreak? [6:47] Understanding the why around heartbreak is the first step to working through it. [11:28] When to let go of the hope that things will change. [14:16] What does Jackie mean when she says she is tired of being hurt? [16:35] Breaking up with a friend vs. a lover - they are one in the same. [17:34] Jackie talks about how she was forcing things to be right even though they weren't right for her. [19:25] What happens when you really love someone, but there is just no way to fix the relationship? [22:25] Understanding anxiety and how to manage it.  Key Takeaways:  The best thing you can do is to take care of yourself. You can only control yourself, you can make all the changes you want in yourself, but you can't make your spouse change. Acknowledging all of your feelings and emotions are the healthiest way to get through the pain. People who don't acknowledge all the feelings, they get angry and bitter. If you have the vulnerability and the guts to say what you are actually experiencing then it will help you in healing quicker. If you make little changes, one a week, and focus on that one change for the full week. If you have little changes, you'll stick to them and then you can build on that new habit.  Quotes:  “Next time you feel that way, you should say to yourself, Don't I deserve better? Do I really deserve to be treated this way?” - Jackie Pilossoph “You finally come to this point where you realize that if it's not right it's just never gonna work no matter how hard you try. And the other thing I tell people is that both people have to really want it to work. And if they don't, you don't have any chance. If one wants it to work that's not enough. Commitment is the biggest force in keeping couples together. I believe that love is a choice.” - Jackie Pilossoph “We fall in love and we ignore the bad behavior and the red flags because we, we don't wanna see that it's too painful. We're not ready to break up. We're still in love with a lot of other aspects of the person, so nobody's all good or all bad. And so we don't wanna see those signs.” - Jackie Pilossoph Guest Bio:  Jackie Pilossoph is the creator and Editor-in-chief of DIVORCED GIRL SMILING, a media company comprised of a website, podcast, mobile app and vetted, trusted professional resources.  DGS has a mission to empower, connect and inspire men and women before, during and after divorce. Jackie and Susan discuss these Golden Nuggets: No judgment zone! Anger is a normal and healthy emotion If you are in the anger phase - it's okay to acknowledge it to others “We can choose what we want to define ourselves as - anger, bitterness, or living in the past should not be one of those things.” Letting go does not mean forgetting what happened  Why you should shift the focus on yourself and your children  “The only time you should think about the past is if you are going to learn from it and do better.”  “If you love yourself don't say, ‘What if…'” The bottom line: You have to love yourself enough to let that anger go This episode is a must-listen for anyone eager to learn how to release their anger for good! Episode Highlights [04:00] Maggie's Journey with Cancer In 2018, Maggie was diagnosed with lung cancer and was told that she had less than a year to live.  At first, Maggie accepted her fate, but she started to learn more about how she can help her body heal.  She took up fasting, a ketogenic diet, organic foods, and metabolic treatments. A year after her diagnosis, she was cancer-free.  While Maggie is not dealing with cancer anymore, she has been dealing with the effects of cancer medicine that was used on her.  Cancer treatment often feels too rushed. It would be better to spread out treatments and lower their dosage.  [08:27] How Maggie's Cancer Affected Brad Brad tried to hide how much Maggie's cancer impacted him emotionally.  At the same time, he felt that Maggie was strong enough to face and survive cancer.  He learned all about metabolic treatments through Maggie and served as her reminder.  Brad even started eating Maggie's diet and fasted with her. [12:13] How Fasting Can Help Before Treatments Maggie used to think eating healthy was good. After a tumour surgery, she was vomiting and sweating. However, she tried fasting before the surgery and found that she felt great after the procedure. Fasting is known to be able to “close” normal cells while the cancer cells are still active and looking for energy. When exposed to radiation, the cancer cells get more affected. Clinical research takes around 17 years before becoming part of clinical practice. [15:39] Genetics and Epigenetics Combining hyperbaric therapy, a strict diet, and exogenous ketones can make a big difference. Yet, this practice is not common in cancer treatment.  The industry focuses more on DNA, even though there have been more discoveries about biochemistry since then.  Genetics and epigenetics are different. The former is about the genes themselves, while the latter looks at what turns the genes on and off.  Our environment and behaviour affect the way our genes work. Differentiation of cells is the true cause of aging. [18:49] The Warburg Effect Cancers can and will change their way of using energy. Even when oxygen is available, cancer cells use fermentation, which is not as efficient. The Warburg effect is already a fact. What's not being studied is why this is happening.  There is the genetic theory where genes mutate and cause cell changes, while the other theory is the other way around.  Cutting off the cancer cells' food source is the start. This includes glucose, glutamine, and so much more.  You can block cancer cell growth with diet, off label drugs, and specific protocols for specific cancers. Learn more about these in the full episode!  [24:48] Why Starving Cancer Can Help  The biggest criticism of starving cancer is that cancer cells can adapt to different metabolic pathways. While starving cancer may not lead to curing it, it can help you buy time. The drug protocols have lower side effects than traditional therapy and radiation surgery. [25:48] How to Use Press Pulse  Due to cancer's adaptability, you can expect to change protocols every so often.  Maggie shares that press pulse can be helpful.  This is using a certain protocol first, then switching to something else once cancer adapts and eventually reintroducing the first protocol.  [27:57] Always Be Vigilant  Brad cautions people not to think they're cured of cancer and go back to unhealthy foods and habits.  We all have some cancer cells. Your immune system needs to be strong enough to fight against it. Even if your cancer markers are gone, retaining a ketogenic diet can still be helpful. Exogenous ketones are not fermentable as a food source for cancer.  [33:05] Maggie and Brad's Documentary, CanceRevolution Maggie and Brad's documentary about cancer includes guests who are at the forefront of cancer research and people who have experienced cancer. The documentary is still a work in progress. Donations are highly appreciated. This is all about sharing the metabolic approach to cancer and understanding how cancer works. In the medical profession, doctors can lose their license if they go all-in on the metabolic approach, even if it has been proven effective. The profession has shown that money drives what is promoted or not. Thus, we need to be proactive and take ownership of our health. [42:36] Take Ownership of Your Health While somatic mutation, genetic theory, and metabolic theory are not yet proven, technologies can be built around it to prove it. For example, the PET scan is a cancer diagnostics tool based on the Warburg Effect.  As a patient, you have to be your own advocate and not just blindly listen to doctors. Read books and clinical research.  Remember that you're in control of your body.  7 Powerful Quotes  [9:18] “When, we were together, I just always had this feeling that she was going to make it through. I don't know why, but I was just like — I knew my wife. I knew how strong she was. And if anyone is going to fight this disease, it's her.” — Bradley    [25:05] “I was given the six to eight months to live. My starving cancer bought me another three years of life. This is time to address the next pathway when it comes up and to wait for the next conventional therapy that might help me and all the new research that's coming out. Though it's not going to cure your cancer, it's going to buy you time and buy you incredible quality of life.” — Maggie    [28:30] “It's really hard to be completely cured. Your cancer is always somewhere. We all have some. My immune system is holding its own, whilst Maggie's wasn't. That's basically what happened is her immune system couldn't fight it off anymore.” — Bradley   [32:21] “So having these exogenous ketones can really help just for athletes, as well as cancer patients, but it's really — it's teaching your body to be metabolically flexible.” — Lisa   [34:12] “...she's [Dr Nasha Winters] lived such a powerful life helping others. She was diagnosed too late in her progression to ever receive chemotherapy. And I think that's really what we can all strive for is even if scans aren't perfect, you can still live such a long, full life and don't give up hope.” — Maggie    [49:32] “One of the things that Maggie and I tell try and tell everyone is you have to be — as a patient, you have to be your own advocate. Do not just listen to what your doctor is saying — your oncologist or any doctor. They only meet with you for a half hour, right? Like Maggie sees her oncologist for like about a half hour once every three months.” — Bradley   [55:11] “I'm not unlucky. There are very clear therapeutic things that I can do, that I did to get cancer, that I can do to get out of it. And we need to promote this message of you're in control of your medical destiny. Don't just listen to somebody else who tells you it's a lost cause.” — Maggie Resources Gain exclusive access and bonuses to Pushing the Limits Podcast by becoming a patron! Show NotesEpisode 6 - CrippenIn 1910, London police discovered human remains underneath the home of a homeopathic doctor. The discovery of the mutilated, decapitated, and deboned corpse ignited a trans-Atlantic manhunt for the suspect they believed guilty of the murder. With the suspect finally caught and executed, London authorities considered the case solved. Yet the evidence never added up to the police's version of events, leaving everyone who read about the murder with tons of questions. Those interested in the case hoped that a 2007 DNA test would finally provide the answers people have been asking for the past 100 years, but the test results left everyone more confused--and shocked-- than they were before. Sources:Bovsun, Mara. “A Question of Murder.” NY Daily News. This week, the billionaire hedge fund Alden Global Capital announced that it had purchased Tribune Publishing, which owns the well-known Chicago Tribune and host of other local newspapers across the East Coast. Nicknamed the “Destroyer of Newspapers,” Alden has a terrible reputation for decimating local newspapers across the country. PLUS a proposed New York state bill, backed by gig economy giants like Uber and DoorDash, would give their workers the right to unionize. But workers and union organizers say the bill is an insidious effort to rob workers of their right to withhold their labor and would continue to misclassify them as independent contractors.

How can an MBA degree help an entrepreneur? [Show summary] Entrepreneur and Harvard Business School grad Ben Faw reflects on the value of his MBA and the role it played in his successful career. Why this serial entrepreneur feels his time at HBS was invaluable [Show notes] What happens to Harvard Business School MBAs after their first job? Do they still value the HBS MBA experience? Let's ask Ben Faw, who was a member of the HBS MBA class of 2014. Ben Faw was previously a guest on Admissions Straight Talk way back in Episode 59, just about seven years ago. At that time, Ben had just graduated from HBS and was about to take a position with LinkedIn. Prior to attending HBS, Ben attended West Point as well as the US Army Ranger School, and served in Hawaii, Iraq, and Kuwait. What's happened since graduating from HBS? Let's find out from Ben. When we last spoke, you were about to graduate from Harvard Business School and start a position at LinkedIn. What's happened since then? Bring us up to date. [1:53] It's been a really interesting and exhilarating journey. There's been a couple of twists and turns. But to start with, LinkedIn was a super positive experience for me. I was able to get a lot of understanding around particularly technology and the digital advertising ecosystem and just a ton of exposure to what a top organization in the technology field can look like, and particularly what it takes to maintain a strong positive culture. As you know, none of these cultures come for free. They’re something you build and then have to maintain, and you’ve got to see all of that.  Then, I had worked with a classmate of mine from business school on a startup project that got to the point where I could actually join full-time in the fall of 2015, about a year and a half after business school. That company, BestReviews, ended up growing quickly. We sold that in early 2018 to Tribune Publishing, which has published the Chicago Tribune and several other newspapers, for over a hundred million. I was fortunate enough to be able to help a lot with that integration, got a little bit of knowledge around the newspaper world, and transitioned to an advisory role there. I have built out a new software company called AdVon Commerce, leveraging a lot of the insights and perspectives from working in that e-commerce and digital marketing world. I got married at the very end of 2019, which proved fortuitous given the situation that unfolded in 2020. Do you feel like you're still using your MBA degree, either the network or the education, looking back on the experience? [3:54] I personally believe, and the data would prove it out, that I use almost every aspect of the MBA every single day of the week. And that includes Saturday and Sunday. I don't always work all of those days, but for me, it's the network that is used almost every single day for me, certainly multiple days per week in one capacity or another directly, and then indirectly in the lessons and insights from the network every day. The skills and perspectives are an everyday occurrence for me. Whether it be thinking about the strategy, the financials, the marketing, each aspect is something that, at least from my work, has been a daily activity. I couldn't be more grateful. And I frankly don't think I would have had the same level of success or accomplishments without the training, the network, and also the confidence that Harvard Business School and the MBA experience gave to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rx4KzuvBUb8 Do you think the case method was a significant ingredient in that value proposition? [5:03] I think in my own case it was, just because I learned well through that method. For me, it provided a way to truly see this in action, in an actual scenario. One thing I did was I actually wrote a small journal entry every day while at business school on what I took away from the cases. That process of preparing for a case,

May 24, 2021: Belarus Hijacks Airline to Abduct Journalist; Gaza Sees Rise in Covid Cases; Biden Gives Haitians Protected Status

Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: The far-right dictator of Belarus used a fighter jet and a fake bomb threat to force down a civilian airliner flying over his country, allowing him to arrest a journalist and dissident who was on board. Meanwhile, Israel’s violence against Gaza is still having ripple effects after a ceasefire, as health officials report hospitals overwhelmed with wounded civilians are now also facing a surge in coronavirus cases. And lastly, the Biden Administration finally granted Temporary Protected Status to thousands of Haitian immigrants living in the U.S., shielding them from deportation back to a country that is dealing with both a political crisis and a brutal COVID epidemic. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: Belarus’ dictator Aleksandr Lukashenko carried out a shocking abduction of a journalist on Sunday, using a fighter jet and a faked bomb plot to force down a civilian airliner carrying the dissident and then arresting him on the ground. On Sunday, dissident journalist Roman Protasevich was on a Ryanair flight from Greece to Vilnius, Poland, where he has been living in exile. Protasevich is the 26-year-old former editor of NEXTA, a channel on the Telegram app that has become one of Belarus’s largest opposition media companies. The flight passed through Belarussian airspace, at which point Belarussian air traffic control claimed that there was a bomb threat aboard. Lukashenko then used that as pretext to personally order Mig-29 fighter jet up to force the plane to land in Minsk, although it was by that time far closer to its destination of Vilnius, according to the BBC. After seven hours on the tarmac in Minsk, the flight eventually made it to Vilnius. But Protasevich was not aboard, as he had been abducted by Belarussian agents when the plane was forced to land. One passenger on the flight told AFP quote: “He was not screaming, but it was clear that he was very much afraid. It looked like if the window had been open, he would have jumped out of it.” Protasevich reportedly told other passengers that he was facing the death penalty. Lukashenko has, in recent months, brutally repressed protests against his authoritarian rule, but has been staunchly defended by the Russian government and faced little to no consequences for his policies. European governments and the U.S. have strongly denounced the shocking hijacking, but it’s unclear what concrete action they can or actually will take -- prior sanctions on the Lukashenko regime have clearly done little to dampen his brazen authoritarianism. Gaza Sees Rise in Covid Cases Israel agreed to stop its outright bombardment of the Gaza strip on Friday, but the aftershocks of its brutal campaign of violence are still shaking the captive population there. According to the Washington Post, Gaza’s hospitals are starting to experience a new wave of COVID cases, as Israel’s bombardment forced many residents into close-packed bomb shelters. Those cases are in addition to the 1,900 people who were injured directly by Israel’s bombing. To make matters worse, the Post reports that an airstrike destroyed the only lab in Gaza that was doing PCR tests for COVID. All of this is even more outrageous when you consider the disparities between Israel and Gaza’s access to the vaccine. Outside of the strip, Israel has conducted one of the most successful vaccination campaigns in the world. But inside Gaza, only 2 percent of the population has been vaccinated. Much of this shortage is in thanks in part to the Israeli blockade that stops medical supplies getting through to people there. Even before the recent bombardment, Gaza’s ICUs were completely swamped. The country has only 60 ICU beds for a population of almost 2 million. The International Red Cross said that damage inflicted by Israel during the conflict cut water supplies in Gaza by 40 percent and had cut power to 700,000 Gazans at one point or another. Lest we forget: all of this damage is intentional. Israel knows what will happen when it drops its bombs. And even though it claims to be targeting Hamas, it’s Gaza’s citizens who suffer the most. Biden Gives Haitians Protected Status Some good news from the Biden Administration. Biden’s head of the DHS announced on Saturday that Haitians living in the U.S. would be extended Temporary Protected Status, reversing Trump-era efforts to deport them or force them out of the country. Some 150,000 Haitians have been living in the U.S. since the devastating 2010 earthquake, and recent political crises and the pandemic there have only made their predicament more dire. Alejandro Mayorkas, the head of the DHS, acknowledged that the country’s recent plight has made it all the more important to offer these people shelter. The temporary protected status order will last for 18 months, and is a continuation of policies the Obama administration started for Haitians after the 2010 quake. The New York Times reports that it originally stems from a 1990 law that allowed foreigners who had to flee their homes because of natural disasters and conflict to work and live in the United States. This decision is far from fixing the disastrous trend of U.S. immigration policy, but it will certainly be a welcome relief for thousands of Haitians fearing for their lives and livelihoods. The U.S. was founded to offer refuge to the needy, and policies like this are the least we can do to live up to that ideal. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: Some more good news for the coronavirus watch in the U.S. Our cases are down to their lowest rate since last summer, with fewer than 30,000 new cases a day. That’s still a lot, but at least 50 percent of Americans have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine now, so we should see those continue to drop. The Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Jack Read, said on Sunday that he supports assigning independent prosecutors to sexual assault cases in the military, cutting out the role that unit commanders had played in investigating their own troops. Shareholders at Tribune Publishing, the company that owns the Chicago Tribune and many other newspapers, approved a sale of the company to Alden Global Capital, one of the most bloodthirsty vulture capital funds that has been destroying newspaper chains across the country, in another blow to the greater journalism industry. In news that should surprise no one, GOP Senator Rand Paul has announced he will not get the COVID vaccine. What can we say -- I guess the only thing Rand is afraid of is that neighbor who beat the crap out of him a few years back, and not a deadly pandemic. A smart guy, that Rand. It's a New York-based hedge fund that is notorious for destroying local newspapers by buying them up, selling off their assets and cutting reporting jobs. Then, in mid-March, it was reported that a Maryland hotel executive and Swiss billionaire were also interested in the purchase, potentially saving the newspaper chain from Alden. On April 4, the hotel executive and billionaire made a better offer than Alden to buy Tribune Publishing. The final buyer has yet to be announced. To learn more, click here.

Today, we have some stories that I wanted to get to yesterday, but the show was already running a bit over 20 minutes, so I figured I'd just save them until today. So, we'll be talking about the Brexit deal from last week, a pretty crappy move by GoDaddy.com, and some news on the fiasco with the stimulus deal in Congress. Let's keep right on rolling this week and get caught up. GO DADDYLet's start by talking about this horrible, tone-deaf initiative that happened to employees of GoDaddy.  About two weeks ago, GoDaddy employees got an email from the email address "happyholiday@godaddy.com". The email read: "2020 has been a record year for GoDaddy, thanks to you! Though we cannot celebrate together during our annual Holiday Party, we want to show our appreciation and share a $650 one-time Holiday bonus! To ensure that you receive your one-time bonus in time for the Holidays, please select your location and fill in the details by Friday, December 18th.”So, about 500 GoDaddy employees filled in their information and sent it back. A ton of folks are struggling through this pandemic, so this $650 would really mean a lot to them. Well, sadly, this wasn't real. A couple of days later, they got another email from GoDaddy's chief security officer, Demetrius Comes, that said: “You’re getting this email because you failed our recent phishing test. You will need to retake the Security Awareness Social Engineering training.” As I mention quite frequently, I'm in school for IT, so I've learned quite a bit about how to keep information safe on the internet and phishing scams and all of that. Honestly, unless there was some type of warning a couple of weeks before this, I think I probably would have filled this out too. I think the only things that would be suspicious would be that they're asking you for your information, and that the email was from "happy holiday @godaddy.com", not "happy holidays". I haven't learned this yet in school, but frankly, if they have "@godaddy.com" in their email address, that would probably mean that the hackers already got into the GoDaddy system. At that point, they'd already have almost everything that they wanted, and the company would have a lot bigger worries than employees giving information. The emails were brought to the world's attention because three employees decided to forward them to The Copper Courier, who first broke the story. That story also says, "Despite the company surpassing 20 million customers this year and reporting 'record customer growth', the company laid off or reassigned hundreds of employees during the coronavirus pandemic, including in Arizona, Iowa, and Texas." That always drives me up the wall when companies say that they're having such a great year, but as an employee, you look around and half your department is gone, or your benefits are getting cut, or something like that. As we learn more and more about Ronald Reagan, there are many things to hate about his presidency, but this stupid idea of "trickle down economics" is maybe the most dangerous. When wealthy people get more wealth, they don't pass jack down to regular people. One of the dumber things about this is that GoDaddy wasn't even the first company to try this. In September, Tribune Publishing, which owns several major newspapers around the country, sent a similar email to its employees that promised $5,000-10,000  bonuses. That company eventually ended up apologizing, and GoDaddy should too. Again, so many people are struggling this year, especially the workers at GoDaddy since they're getting laid off left and right, so this is the worst kind of email you can send. Yes, hackers can be very good and send convincing emails like this one, but there were almost no warning signs in this email. There was one typo where they put "submittals" instead of "submissions", one grammar issue with a missing comma, and then they also put the standard "free money, claim it now!" saying in there, which are all a bit suspicious. At the same time, people do not spell as well or have as good of grammar as they used to, even HR people. Spellcheck is really a crutch, and people use it as such, so besides that "free money" thing, I wouldn't think this email was suspicious at all. Not only does GoDaddy need to apologize for this, but more importantly, they need to cough up those bonuses as part of that apology. If you can't afford that, then don't send out the email. BREXITSome other big international news that broke towards the middle of last week was a sort of Brexit deal that the UK and European Union designed. Officially, it's called the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement. Member countries of the EU and British Parliament are both expected to approve the agreement within the next week, but the European Parliament still has to approve it, which might not happen until later in January or February. It technically takes effect on January 1st, but it doesn't become permanent until the European Parliament approves. To put it mildly, British citizens were not happy about it. Apparently, it's worse than the deal that Theresa May originally made, and that deal caused Boris Johnson to have a fit and resign his cabinet position in disgust. A lot of people are pointing out the hypocrisy of him coming out and trying to sell this deal, which is worse than the old one. On the one hand, it's important because it makes sure that the UK can still trade with the EU without facing tariffs or quotas. However, the UK loses a lot of privileges. Everything from access to fishing waters and energy markets, as well as uncertainties about traveling between the two, education exchanges. There are also worries about whether the UK will still get real-time info from EU law enforcement databases and whether they'll have access to the EU markets since the financial services sector is so important for Britain. Stay tuned everyone, this is going to keep devloping over the next couple of months. DEFENSE BILL VETO AND STIMULUSYesterday, we found out that the House voted to overturn Trump's veto of the annual defense authorization bill. I believe the final tally was about 322-87. The article from NPR that I was reading about it mentioned that it's super unusual for the House to have to override a veto on the defense spending bill, but that's because it's even more unusual for the president to veto it in the first place.  NPR said, "The political popularity of the military typically means the National Defense Authorization Act has a high likelihood of passage and becomes one of the last vehicles of the year for compromise and enactment." I'm just going to pause right here and say that I hate the stigma that if you even  question the enormous amount of spending on the military, you're somehow "disrespecting the troops". No, you can respect the troops and wonder why so much of the military budget is for these blacked-out parts of the budget that means that we can't see how the money is being spent, or why regular supplies cost so much more than fair market value. Respecting the troops means making sure that they're fighting for freedoms, not to help private defense companies get rich. But back to the story here, Trump opposed the bill because it would rename military bases named for Confederate figures like Robert E. Lee, and he also was angry that Democrats in Congress didn't agree to a bargain in which they'd lift some legal protections for tech companies, which is the famous Section 230 that he's been ranting about for weeks now. Again, it's important to set the record straight on what this Section 230 actually is, because I guarantee you that a ton of people in Congress who say they oppose it don't even know what it is. Section 230 is supposed to help protect free speech on the internet, so it says that tech companies like Twitter, Facebook, blogs, etc. are not liable for what users post on there. This is why Facebook doesn't get in any legal trouble for having all of those right-wing groups who use it to post death threats or plot to kidnap governors, or why Twitter isn't liable for a toddler tweeting "STOP THE STEAL" or "when the looting starts, the shooting starts". Really, it's for any website with user-generated content, because the website owner technically isn't responsible for what other people post, and places like YouTube have so much content that they'd never be able to go through every single thing. Sure, that's a bit of an excuse, but it's the truth. The internet as we know it would change without this. That's the irony here: Trump hates Section 230, but if he takes it away, he'll be the first one who's banned. He tweets false stuff, and even threats, nearly every day of the week. Usually, it's multiple times a day. As for the COVID stimulus bill, that also finally passed after Trump originally said he wouldn't be signing it. It includes a lot of what I went over last week on Monday, which was the first time that it looked like it was going to pass, before Trump went off the rails and said he wouldn't sign it. It has funding or changes for about 9 categories of things, so they jammed a ton of stuff in here just because they could. Anyways, let's go through those.Individual Benefits⦁ $600 direct payment checks for every adult and child earning up to $75,000. Individuals earning between $75,000 and $99,000 would get smaller checks, and the benefit cuts out entirely for individuals earning over $99,000.⦁ Unemployment benefits: they agreed to extend enhanced unemployment benefits for jobless workers, who will receive up to $300 per week through mid-March. Self-employed people and gig workers will also receive extended assistance.⦁ Rental assistance: $25 billion to help families pay their rent, and it extends the eviction moratorium now in effect until Jan. 31.⦁ SNAP assistance: The measure includes an additional $13 billion for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Small-Business HelpPPP loans: The agreement includes some $284 billion for Paycheck Protection Program loans. Democrats say they expanded eligibility for the loans to include nonprofits and local newspapers, along with TV and radio stations. Also, $15 billion would be reserved for live venues, independent movie theaters and cultural institutions, which have been struggling due to pandemic-forced closures.Vaccines$68 billion to purchase and distribute COVID-19 vaccines and help states conduct testing — $20 billion of that funding will make the vaccine available at no cost for anybody needing it.Broadband Access$7 billion to increase access to broadband Internet, including a new Emergency Broadband Benefit that Democrats say will help millions of students' families and unemployed workers afford the broadband they need during the pandemic.Transportation Aid $45 billion in transportation-related assistance, including:⦁     $16 billion for airlines to pay the salaries of workers and contractors.⦁     $14 billion for mass transit agencies.⦁     $10 billion for highways.⦁     $1 billion for Amtrak.Education$82 billion in funding for schools and universities to assist with reopening, including $2.75 billion for private K-12 education.Agriculture$13 billion in the measure for farmers and agriculture, including money under the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program for growers and livestock, dairy and poultry producers.Medical BillsThe measure also includes a provision ending surprise medical billing. Republicans say patients would be required to receive a "true and honest cost estimate" three days before any scheduled procedure and that billing disputes would be subject to arbitration.Tax-Deductible MealsLawmakers also included a provision sought by Trump, making the cost of meals a deductible business expense.NEW YEAR'S EVE GUIDANCE FROM CDCThe CDC has guidance for how to celebrate New Year's Eve "safely", but that's kind of misleading. There's really no way to safely celebrate New Year's Eve like we would any other year; it's essentially about reducing risk. I know that I'm probably preaching to the choir here because if you're listening, you're probably taking COVID fairly seriously. However, it's good to keep hearing these things to remind ourselves, or maybe you're just tuning in and you're not as familiar with all the ways to stay safe. I want this show to be useful to as many people as possible. So, if you do celebrate:⦁ Wear a mask⦁ Social distance = 6ft = 2 arms lengths ⦁ Avoid crowds, especially in poorly ventilated indoor spaces⦁ Wash your hands⦁ Stay home if you're sick⦁ Get your flu shot ASAP⦁ Get your COVID vaccineIf you host: ⦁ Talk with guests ahead of time to set expectations for celebrating together.⦁ Limit the number of guests.⦁ Keep celebrations outdoors, if possible.⦁ If indoors, open windows and doors. Use a window fan to blow air out, which will pull fresh air in through the open windows.⦁ Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and items between use.⦁ Have guests bring their own food, drinks, plates, cups, and utensils.⦁ Have extra unused masks available for your guests and encourage everyone to wear them inside and outside.⦁ Keep background music volume low so guests don’t need to shout⦁ It’s okay if you decide to postpone or cancel your gathering. Do what’s best for you.If you're an attendee: ⦁ It’s okay if you decide to stay home and remain apart from others. Do what’s best for you.⦁ If traveling for a celebration, know what to do before, during, and after travel.⦁ Bring your own food, drinks, and disposable plates, cups, and utensils.⦁ Wear a mask indoors and outdoors and safely store your mask while eating and drinking.⦁ Avoid alcohol and drugs that can alter judgement and make it difficult to practice COVID-19 safety measures.⦁ Avoid shouting and singing.⦁ Avoid areas where food is prepared, such as the kitchen.⦁ Use single-use options, like condiment packets.Alternatives to traditional celebrations:⦁ Virtual celebrations (concerts, performances, countdowns to midnight, dinner or dessert with friends/family)⦁ Plan your party for the people you live with⦁ Reach out to family, friends, and neighbors⦁ Call, text, or leave a voicemail for family, friends, and neighbors wishing them a happy new year.⦁ Call friends and family to count down to the new year together.⦁ Plan a neighborhood countdown to midnight. People who live with each other can stand in front of their house and cheer together at midnight.Other ideas:⦁ Watch a livestreamed firework display, concert, First Night event, or other New Year’s programming from your home, such as the Times Square New Year’s Eve ball drop. Virtual events are happening across the United States.⦁ Take care of yourself and do something you enjoy, such as reading a book or taking a walk.⦁ Pick up a special meal from a local restaurant to share with your household.⦁ Plan an outdoor activity with people you live with such as a hike or sledding.⦁ Set new year resolutions. Find out if your hometown is sponsoring a special social media event and share your resolutions.I have to be honest though, it's pretty depressing to think about where we were 1 year ago versus New Year's Eve this year. There was so much hype about the new decade and the roaring 20s and the Great Gatsby and all of that, but it seems like we got what the actual roaring 20s were like. I don't know what else to say, frankly. Just hang in there, and think of the massive, massive celebrations that'll be happening when this is all over. I don't even think we can imagine what it'll be like when every band you've wanted to see is on tour at the same time, all of the sports are back, theater and movies are back, etc.

Of the 200 largest papers by circulation in the United States, 70% of them are owned by hedge funds. Tom's next guest today is Jon Schleuss, the national president of the NewsGuild, a division of the Communications Workers of America trade union. The NewsGuild represents more than 20,000 journalists and media professionals across the United States and Canada, including the newsroom employees of the Baltimore Sun. Mr. Schleuss (pronounced "shloyce" ) got his start in journalism a decade ago as an online editor and manager of a staff of journalists at the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. He later worked part time as a reporter and weekend host at the local NPR station. In 2013 he joined the Los Angeles Times as a reporter, and five years later led the campaign to secure union representation at the Times, whose newsroom had been non-union for all of its 140 years. Mr. Schleuss's union has been closely involved in the Save Our Sun campaign to protect the Baltimore Sun from continued cuts by its current owner, Tribune Publishing and its controlling hedge-fund partner, Alden Global Capital, and to press the company to sell the paper to a journalism-centered coalition of local buyers.
