#567: What happens when an astronaut goes blind during a spacewalk? For Chris Hadfield, this wasn't a hypothetical scenario. While working outside the International Space Station, cleaning solution from his helmet visor spread into both eyes, leaving him completely blind in the vacuum of space. His response? Stay calm and methodically evaluate options. He could call Houston. He could have a crew member rescue him. He could try to cry to flush out his eyes - though that's tricky in zero gravity. This story opens our conversation with Polina Marinova Pompliano, former Fortune Magazine reporter and author of the new book "Hidden Genius." Through her interviews with high-performers across fields — from astronauts to investors to extreme athletes — she uncovers patterns in how people handle uncertainty and build resilience. Take trust, for example. Reid Hoffman's formula is simple: Trust = Consistency + Time. It's not enough to show up sporadically when it's convenient. Trust builds through meeting deadlines, following through on commitments, and maintaining clear communication — even during challenges. Reliable consistency compounds over time, much like interest in an investment account. Or consider Charlie Munger's approach to beliefs. Rather than defending positions "to the death," he argues you should only claim to believe something if you can argue the opposition's viewpoint better than they can. This forces you to genuinely understand different perspectives rather than just reflexively disagreeing. The conversation explores how people navigate major setbacks, from Conrad Anker surviving an avalanche that killed his climbing partners to Polina's own experience of quitting Fortune magazine right before COVID hit. A key theme emerges: resilience isn't about avoiding difficulty, but about training yourself to handle it through small daily practices. Former Navy SEAL David Goggins calls this "callusing the mind." By deliberately doing one uncomfortable thing each day - whether that's running in the rain or having a difficult conversation - you build your capacity to handle larger challenges. The goal isn't to become superhuman, but to expand your comfort zone step by step. Other topics include: - How immigrant experiences shape risk perception - The shift from institutional to individual trust in media - Reframing "failure" as redirection - Building competence as an antidote to fear - Finding signal in the noise of information overload Enjoy the conversation! It doesn't purport to idolize any single individual, because, as we talk about in this episode, if you idolize someone, you have to accept everything about them, the warts and all.Instead, what we talk about and the books share are attributes, behaviors and skillsets possessed by these high performing individuals that we can take for ourselves and make our own.Whether it's the Mamba Mentality of Kobe mixed with the Pain tolerance of Amelia Boone and David Goggins. We can take the best skills, attributes and mindsets from some of the greatest athletes, creators and thinkers and make them our own. This was one of the most fun conversations I've had and I hope you enjoy. My guest today is the author of “Hidden Genius,” The Secret Ways of Thinking that Power the World's Most Successful People, Polina Marinova Pompliano. She is the founder of The Profile, a media organization that studies successful people and companies. Previously, she spent five years at FORTUNE where she covered technology and venture capital. As the author and editor of Term Sheet, FORTUNE's industry-leading dealmaking newsletter, Polina interviewed the industry's most influential dealmakers, including Melinda Gates, Steve Schwarzman, Richard Branson, and more. hiddengeniusbook.com readtheprofile.com In today's episode, we embark on a captivating journey through the bustling corridors of New York City's subway, where inspiration often strikes unexpectedly. From these underground musings, we delve into the transformative power of personal narratives, discovering profound insights and relatable wisdom from the experiences of others. My guest, Polina, shares invaluable lessons gleaned from the paths of the most successful individuals. Amidst tales of triumph, we explore the notion that success is not always a linear journey; rather, it often manifests in the midst of messiness and imperfection. Embracing the inevitability of hardship, we learn to navigate the twists and turns of our own narratives with resilience and grace. Polina offers sage advice, drawing from the wisdom of those who have navigated similar challenges. Among the gems she shares is the concept of cultivating an aspirational alter ego—an empowering tool for personal growth and achievement. As our conversation unfolds, we delve deeper into the mechanics of success, exploring the role of systems and the indispensable nature of trust in our pursuits. And as we reach the culmination of our discussion, we leave you with a stirring reflection on the essence of success—a reminder that its true measure lies not solely in achievement but in the journey itself. Join us as we uncover the transformative power of storytelling, resilience, and trust, and embark on a journey toward realizing our fullest potential. Before we dive into the conversation, I'd like to extend my gratitude to my dear friend Jordan Olmscheid for introducing me to Polina. Jordan is the brilliant mind behind "The Wealth Letters," a compilation of letters from accomplished individuals imparting their most profound life and business insights. If you haven't already, I highly encourage you to check out his previous episode on the show—it's a treasure trove of wisdom. Additionally, Jordan is currently immersed in an exciting new book project; be sure to follow him on Substack for updates and exclusive content. Alright, let's get started, please help me welcome, Polina Pompliano. The New York subway can be a source of inspiration for many people. Feeling like an outsider can provide a different perspective and advantage. Learning history through personal stories and experiences can make it more relatable and engaging. Learning from others' experiences and stories can help in making better decisions and understanding different perspectives. Success is often messy and non-linear, requiring a willingness to fail and learn from mistakes. Embracing imperfection can lead to innovative and successful outcomes. Hardship and suffering can be catalysts for personal growth and progress. Developing an alter ego can help individuals overcome self-limiting beliefs and tap into their full potential. Understanding different perspectives is crucial for empathy and avoiding judgment. Translating a book can have a profound impact, allowing people who don't speak the original language to access and understand the author's work. Trust is the foundation of personal and professional relationships, and it is earned through consistency and reliability. Focusing on systems rather than outcomes can lead to more sustainable and fulfilling success. Defining success. It's not true. As long as you can prove that the audience is really high quality and really engaged and they actually click and they actually open, and they actually read it.”“The best piece of advice I heard was from Kat Cole, who's the president of Focus Brands. She said that every time you get a piece of feedback, the first thing you should do before you reject it—before you think it's stupid is accept it and try and be like, okay, if this is true, then what can I do about it?...Accept it as truth before you outright dismiss it. Because after a while, that was not the only email I got like that. I got a number of them that were very critical, but it made me have thicker skin. It made me evolve in my writing. And by the end of my time there, I'd like to think that my voice, my tone, how I wrote, [the] people really liked because it was me and I wasn't trying to be somebody else.”*RESOURCESThe ProfileFortune Magazine - an American multinational business magazineThe Messy Middle by Scott The Messy Middle by Scott BelskyMaria Popova - Bulgarian writerChefs Table - Grant Achatz EpisodeSingle Supplement newsletter - Nikola SlawsonNFTs and a Thousand True Fans - Article from a16z.com (Andreessen Horowitz's website)Sara Blakely - Founder of SpanxShane Parrish - Author, founder of Farnam StreetAtomic Habits by James ClearJosh Wolfe - Investor, founder of Lux CapitalBusiness Insider - American news websiteThe Hustle - NewsletterBessemer Venture Partners - American venture capital firmThe Washington Post - American daily newspaperThe New York Times - American daily newspaperThe Wall Street Journal - American business-focused, English-language international daily newspaperBrandon Stanton - Author of Humans of New York*FOLLOW LONDON WRITERS' SALONFor show notes, transcripts and to attend our live podcasts visit podcast.londonwriterssalon.comFor free writing sessions, join free Writers' Hours: writershour.comFollow London Writers' Salon:Twitter: twitter.com/WritersSalonInstagram: instagram.com/londonwriterssalonFacebook: facebook.com/LondonWritersSalon*CREDITSProduction by Victoria Spooner. Since discovering the art of reporting at her high school newspaper, Polina Marinova Pompliano has built a name for herself as an accomplished journalist and entrepreneur. Polina graduated from the University of Georgia in 2013 with a degree in journalism and sociology, having experience as Editor-in-Chief of the school paper and internships at CNN and USA Today under her belt. Chasing a long-held dream to pursue journalism in New York City, Polina hustled through 16-hour workdays to turn her dreams into a reality, ultimately landing a role as a social media editor at Fortune Magazine. Polina worked her way up to reporting on entrepreneurship and eventually led daily curation of The Term Sheet, a must-read morning newsletter by Fortune on tech and venture capital. Along the way, Polina had also been hard at work building a newsletter dedicated solely to highlighting the profiles of interesting and successful people and companies. As readership and her pull to build The Profile into a broader media company grew, in March of 2020 (at the start of the pandemic), Polina took a leap of faith and quit her role at Fortune to pursue The Profile full-time. In this week's episode of Passages, I ask Polina about her journey studying and pursuing journalism, how she found her way to Fortune, her experience reporting on finance & venture capital (topics she initially knew nothing about), a day-in-the-life working for a major media publication, and lessons she's learned from reporting on the greats. From aspiring journalists, to entrepreneurs, to anyone interested in the life and rise of a major media reporter, this episode was made for you. -------- Mentioned in today's episode: Coffee with a Journalist: Polina Marinova, Fortune: https://bit.ly/3kd3z3O “I quit my job at the start of the pandemic to launch a company.
