If you want to learn writing, read great writers, etc.But this is not what parents usually do when they think about how to educate their kids. The default for a parent is rather to imitate their peers and outsource the big decisions to bureaucracies. But what would we learn if we studied the highest achievements? Thinking about this question, I wrote down a list of twenty names—von Neumann, Tolstoy, Curie, Pascal, etc—selected on the highly scientific criteria “a random Swedish person can recall their name and think, Sounds like a genius to me”. That list is to me a good first approximation of what an exceptional result in the field of child-rearing looks like. I ordered a few piles of biographies, read, and took notes. Trying to be a little less biased in my sample, I asked myself if I could recall anyone exceptional that did not fit the patterns I saw in the biographies, which I could, and so I ordered a few more biographies. This kept going for an unhealthy amount of time.I sampled writers (Virginia Woolf, Lev Tolstoy), mathematicians (John von Neumann, Blaise Pascal, Alan Turing), philosophers (Bertrand Russell, René Descartes), and composers (Mozart, Bach), trying to get a diverse sample. In this essay, I am going to detail a few of the patterns that have struck me after having skimmed 42 biographies. I will sort the claims so that I start with more universal patterns and end with patterns that are less common.

This is: Childhoods of exceptional people, published by Henrik Karlsson on February 6, 2023 on LessWrong. Let's start with one of those insights that are as obvious as they are easy to forget: if you want to master something, you should study the highest achievements of your field. If you want to learn writing, read great writers, etc. But this is not what parents usually do when they think about how to educate their kids. This kept going for an unhealthy amount of time. I sampled writers (Virginia Woolf, Lev Tolstoy), mathematicians (John von Neumann, Blaise Pascal, Alan Turing), philosophers (Bertrand Russell, René Descartes), and composers (Mozart, Bach), trying to get a diverse sample. In this essay, I am going to detail a few of the patterns that have struck me after having skimmed 42 biographies. I will sort the claims so that I start with more universal patterns and end with patterns that are less common. Exceptional people grow up in exceptional milieus This seems to be true for >95 percent of the people I looked at. These naked apes, the humans, are intensely social animals. They obsessively internalize values, ideas, skills, and desires from the people who surround them. It is therefore not surprising that those who grow up to be exceptional tend to have spent their formative years surrounded by adults who were exceptional. Virginia Woolf never attended school. Her father, Leslie Stephen, who, along with their tutors, educated Virginia and her sister, was an editor, critic, and biographer “complicatedly hated” by his daughter and of such standing that he could invite Henry James, Thomas Hardy, and Alfred Lord Tennyson to dine and converse with his children. Leslie Stephen described his circle, in which Virginia grew up, as “most of the literary people of mark . . . clever young writers and barristers, chiefly of the radical persuasion . . . we used to meet on Wednesday and Sunday evenings, to smoke and drink and discuss the universe and the reform movement.” When they went to the Hebrides in the summers, Leslie brought along painters and philosophers, who would hang out and work in their summer house while the children played. This parental obsession with curating a rich intellectual milieu comes through in nearly all of the biographies. As I wrote in First we shape our social graph; then it shapes us: Michel Montaigne's father employed only servants who were fluent in Latin, curating a classical culture, so Montaigne would learn Latin as his mother tongue. J.S. Mill spent his childhood at his father's desk, helping his father write a treatise on economics, running over to Jeremy Bentham's house to borrow books and discuss ideas. Blaise Pascal, too, was homeschooled by his father. His father chose not to teach him math. (The father, Etienne, had a passion for mathematics that he felt was slightly unhealthy. He feared mathematics would distract Pascal from less intrinsically rewarding pursuits, such as literature, much like modern parents fear TikTok.) Pascal had to teach himself. Wh...

Exceptional individuals display five common traits according to former FBI agent, Joe Navarro, an expert in non-verbal communication. These include: self-mastery, observation, communication, action, and psychological comfort. Most clinicians would agree that the therapeutic effect we have on patients has little to do with the medication we provide, but more what is communicated verbally and nonverbally during the interaction. But, how do we hone these skills? And importantly, how do we become masters of the art of medicine, so we can provide comfort and healing in the most complex of encounters - to the geriatric patient in acute crisis. Salt & Spine

Episode 142: Jorge GaviriaThis week, we're thrilled to welcome Masienda founder Jorge Gaviria to #TalkCookbooks with us.Jorge's first cookbook, Masa: Techniques, Recipes, and Reflections on a Timeless Staple, explores the deep history and significance of masa—the dough made of nixtamalized corn that goes on to become tortillas, tamales, sopes, and many more Mexican and global staples. It all started with a realization while apprenticing at Blue Hill at Stone Barns. Jorge started to dream of opening the “tortilla equivalent of Tartine Bakery, the San Francisco–based high temple of sourdough.” That idea led to sourcing heirloom corn and masa harina (the dried version of masa) from local farmers in Oaxaca and supplying some of New York City's top chefs. Jorge's company, Masienda, was born.Eight years later, Masienda is on a quest to revolutionize how we think about corn—and therefore, masa, masa harina, and other products. Today he's sourcing heirloom corn from a network of 2,000 farmers across six states in Mexico. And yet, he realized something else was missing: a text. And so, he created Masa the book. It's a quite comprehensive tome (nearly 300 pages) on the history of corn and masa and a guide that's as useful for a home cook as it is for a scientist. (Want to nixtamalize your own corn at home? Jorge walks you through it! And offers practical lessons on how to make high-quality masa at home.) Somewhat shockingly, this is the first major cookbook to focus on masa.Of course, there are recipes, too. Masa offers 50 base recipes for tortillas, tamales, pozole, and more to build on, as well as inventive recipes from top chefs across the world. (Get two of them this week by becoming a paid subscriber to Salt + Spine!)Jorge writes that “like sourdough before it, craft masa is on the brink of a global culinary movement.”In today's show, we're talking with Jorge about what led him to focus on masa and launching his company Masienda, about how we're now in a “third wave” of masa, and we're putting him to the test in our signature game.[[EPISODE DETAILS GO HERE. Tosh Berman is the author of the wonderful memoir TOSH : Growing Up in Wallace Berman's World. Tosh is the son of Shirley and Wallace Berman, central figures of the underground Beat-era art scene in Los Angeles from the 1950s thru 1970s. Wallace was a well-respected experimental artist whose friends included many famous artists, musicians, actors and poets of that time including Allen Ginsberg, the Rolling Stones, Dennis Hopper, Ramblin'Jack Elliot, Dean Stockwell and the list goes on. So young Tosh grew up around all these famous characters of the LA arts scene and his book shows that world thru the eyes of a child and teenager. It was great to talk with Tosh about his book and about life in L.A. then and now. We discovered that Tosh is also an actor who co-starred in several experimental art films with the GoGos drummer Gina Schock. He also hosted a tv talk show in the late 1980s called Tea with Tosh interviewing various artists and musicians, most notably composer Philip Glass. More recently he puts out a video series called Tosh Talks where he discusses literature, music and culture. In addition to his TOSH memoir, he has also published a book of his poetry called The Plum in Mr. Blum's Pudding, and a memoir of his experiences following the band Sparks in London and Paris called Sparks-Tastic. Tosh is an editor and publisher as well. His publishing house TamTam Books focuses on 20th century international literature, specializing in the works of Boris Vian, Serge Gainsbourg, Jacques Mesrine, and Sparks.

**The first episode of Forging Ahead with Aviv Manoach, a show about tabletop roleplaying games where Aviv discusses the shenanigans of his home group and prepare their next adventures.** You can join live each week on [twitch.tv/iceldotme](http://www.twitch.tv/iceldotme), or subscribe to the podcast's audio on [dwarfcast.net](http://www.dwarfcast.net). ## Who Am I? I'm Aviv, you may have heard me before on our main On the Shoulders of Dwarves show, as I'm the technical producer of the website and sometimes guest host. I've been gaming for about 15 years and for the past decade have been working in media production: internet videos, livestream, podcasts, and of course - tabletop games. ## What Are We Playing? Wonders! Heroes of Tomorrow, an adaptation and Hebrew translation of Magpie Games' amazing Masks: a New Generation, with some new systems design to allow your group to create cool and interesting urban environments for your heroes. In the world of Wonders, people with superpowers were not known to the general public until 10 years ago, after the War of Might exposed them. ## Our Heroes * **Oron**, the Nova (Telekinesis and Telepathy) * **Amraphel**, the Janus (Supernatural Senses, Impossible Mobility) * **The Flying Fist**, the Beacon (Martial Arts, Acrobatics) * **Seabreeze**, the Outsider (Stunning Beauty, Radical Shapeshifting) ## The Big Picture Our campaign takes place in southern Israel. During the War of Might, an interdimensional fissure erupted near our city, spawning weird creatures. After the war, the area became an international demilitarised zone and a prison facility, The Bore, was built around it. In the present day, our team of heroes has rescued a high profile Wonder from an abduction attempt, leading them to discover this was not an isolated case. ## The Next Session There are two story threads we've been following: 1. An underground superpowered fight club, being held weekly a dance club called Titania. The team visited the place and Amraphel got introduced to the club managers, Rave and Oberon. 2. A mysterious archaeological artefact called the Tablet of Anat, which a young woman named Hexen was searching for in the very building housing the Titania. That's our show for today. On the next episode, we'll catch up on what happened with the group in our gaming session and we'll discuss how to proceed. In the meantime, you can catch me on twitter [@icel](https://twitter.com/Icel), check out more about my games on the [Vanor – Games to Amaze](https://fb.com/Vanor.GamesToAmaze/) page, and can join our the [On the Shoulder of Dwarves](https://fb.com/groups/dwarfpodcast/) community group. ## Video Version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSIUMyEK-Ds
