“I was born and raised in a family of engineers. All around me were gadgets and software, and I wasn't really excited about them. My father taught me how to programme. It was basic, and it was more than 30 years ago, and did not excite me that much,” Elena Marinova tells Andrew Wrobel in the third episode of Emerging Europe Talks She's Next empowered by VISA.  Elena is president and chair of the board of directors at Musala Soft, a software service company, founded in 2000 and currently with offices in Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Egypt, and Emerging Europe's Female Business Leader for 2020.  “But 2000 was the year of the dot com crash. We started with fancy Silicon Valley start-ups. Everything was super shiny…unicorns and rainbows. A few months later, we lost all our clients. And a year later, we were almost done. […] It turned out to be an extremely fun and dynamic field.”  Musala Soft was recently acquired by the KKCG Group and is now part of Qinshift, although it has kept its original brand.  “I have known Elena for a few years, and I cannot find another person who is so committed to supporting young generations of programmers, and not just in her home country of Bulgaria. Back in 2017, she co-founded the European Junior Olympiad in Informatics for kids from the Council of Europe countries and gave them a stage to compete and create friendships that will last for life and lead to scientific breakthroughs and a better and more connected world. And her enthusiasm is contagious,” Andrew says.  “If you like the things that you're doing, of course, you're doing more of them and it's not a nine to five thing. It's something you live with all the time,” Elena adds.   And she seems to have taken a liking to programming in the end.

What you need to know about iron if you are reducing your red meat intake

An all-encompassing conversation on the essential nutrient, iron. Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional disorder in the world. Angela Saunders brings 37+ years experience and has a particular interest in the adequacy of vegetarian and vegan diets. We cover: Concerns and importance of iron Groups of people considered most at risk of iron deficiency anaemia The three levels of iron deficiency and when you should be concerned Concerns when it comes to plant-based (vegetarian/vegan) diets and iron intake Are vegetarians and vegans at a greater risk of developing iron deficiency anaemia than omnivores? What is the difference between plant foods and animal foods when it comes to iron? Why is it that people commonly associate red meat as a better source of iron?Non-haem iron absorption is carefully controlled by our gut; we absorb more only when we need it. Is this a protective measure? Nutrients that enhance iron absorption and nutrients that inhibit iron absorption - do these matter? The US, Australian and NZ governments set higher iron requirements for vegetarians. Are these higher requirements necessary? Summary on what the research tells us about vegetarians and iron deficiency One-liners you don't want to miss:“In Australia, the groups we are most concerned about tend to be those that limit their food intake. Particularly young women and men who follow a restricted diet, perhaps for weight loss/ weight management or food intolerance or other concerns they may have. They are cutting back on grains, meat etc. - these folk are going to be at risk of iron deficiency.” “We have to acknowledge that there are some vegetarians and vegans, who without realising perhaps, are eating poorly planned, imbalanced plant-based diets, with an inadequate variety of food and they may not be thinking about where they are getting their iron from.”“If the diet is well-planned, vegetarians/vegans actually eat as much or more iron than omnivorous diets. That is quite an amazing finding.” “With iron from plants we only absorb what we need and this means our storage levels of iron don't get too high. This is actually very protective and may actually be one of the reasons why vegetarians have less risk of chronic disease because of the lower levels of iron, a pro-oxidant, in our bodies.”References Craig WJ, Mangels AR, Fresán U, Marsh K, Miles FL, Saunders AV, Haddad EH, Heskey CE, Johnston P, Larson-Meyer E, Orlich M. J., Renton, A., Castellani, R., Hall, P., Harmens, M., Holroyd, G., Nicholson, B., Williams, E. L., Hobson, H. M., Wade, A. R. Abstract: For decades, neural suppression in early visual cortex has been thought to be fixed. But recent work has challenged this assumption by showing that suppression can be reweighted based on recent history; when pairs of stimuli are repeatedly presented together, suppression between them strengthens. Here we investigate the temporal dynamics of this process using a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) paradigm that provides a time-resolved, direct index of suppression between pairs of stimuli flickering at different frequencies (5 and 7Hz). Our initial analysis of an existing EEG dataset (N=100) indicated that suppression increases substantially during the first 2-5 seconds of stimulus presentation (with some variation across stimulation frequency). We then collected new EEG data (N=100) replicating this finding for both monocular and dichoptic mask arrangements in a preregistered study designed to measure reweighting. A third experiment (N=20) used source localized MEG, and found that these effects are apparent in primary visual cortex (V1), consistent with results from neurophysiological work. Because long-standing theories propose inhibition/excitation differences in autism, we also compared reweighting between individuals with high vs low autistic traits, and with and without an autism diagnosis, across our 3 data sets (total N=220). We find no compelling differences in reweighting that are associated with autism. Our results support the normalization reweighting model, and indicate that for prolonged stimulation, increases in suppression occur on the order of 2-5 seconds after stimulus onset. How might we launch our newsletter and build a loyal following for our writing? How can we monetize our newsletter to six figures and beyond? In this episode, we interview Polina Marinova Pompliano who quit her job at Fortune in 2020 to focus on building her weekly Substack newsletter The Profile, where she profiles interesting figures like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Brandon Stanton, the creator of Humans of New York. We talk about tactics for growing a loyal and paying readership, how she develops ideas for her newsletter and the importance of feedback to improve our writing.*Polina Marinova is a former Fortune Magazine editor and writer, and founder of newsletter The Profile where she studies the world's most successful people & companies. She's written for CNN, CNN Travel, Business Insider, Yahoo Finance, Boston Herald, Food & Wine Magazine, Odyssey, The Hustle and more. Polina is part of an emerging trend of writers who are looking ahead to the future of media and content and considering what it might take to start a media company on their own terms.*SHOW NOTES[02:39] Polina shares what gave her the courage to quit her job at The Fortune and dedicate her time to The Profile despite the pandemic and why you only need 100 true fans[06:42] Polina shares how she's become good at time management over the years, and how she stays productive[09:06] The importance of sharing your work with the public and opening yourself up to criticism and feedback as a writer[11:56] How Polina deals with feedback today versus how she dealt with it in the past[13:00] What Polina learned from writing articles and getting feedback, and how she used them to get more readers[15:33] Polina talks about her relationship dynamic with her husband who's also a writer, and how their differences help her get a business perspective for her newsletter[21:07] Polina shares the tools and systems that have helped her to be better at writing[27:42] The challenges Polina encounters in writing newsletters and what keeps her writing [29:15] Polina shares some newsletters that inspired her, including James Clear's blog[30:51] The business side of The Profile: how Polina grew her newsletter, and how she focused on quality content[31:58] Monetizing The Profile, and what made Polina's readers convert to a paid subscription[34:09] Polina shares some of the ways she earns from The Profile[37:07] Why you don't need a massive following to monetize your work[37:33] Polina talks about her future goal of building a human interest company[38:32] The future of newsletters and why it's the perfect time to be a writer right now[41:30] On dealing with self-doubt and criticisms, and why patience and consistency is important if you want to start a newsletter*QUOTES:“So I think a lot of times people think they need this massive, massive following to monetize anything. It's not true. As long as you can prove that the audience is really high quality and really engaged and they actually click and they actually open, and they actually read it.”“The best piece of advice I heard was from Kat Cole, who's the president of Focus Brands. She said that every time you get a piece of feedback, the first thing you should do before you reject it—before you think it's stupid is accept it and try and be like, okay, if this is true, then what can I do about it?...Accept it as truth before you outright dismiss it. Because after a while, that was not the only email I got like that. I got a number of them that were very critical, but it made me have thicker skin. It made me evolve in my writing. And by the end of my time there, I'd like to think that my voice, my tone, how I wrote, [the] people really liked because it was me and I wasn't trying to be somebody else.”*RESOURCESThe ProfileFortune Magazine - an American multinational business magazineThe Messy Middle by Scott The Messy Middle by Scott BelskyMaria Popova - Bulgarian writerChefs Table - Grant Achatz EpisodeSingle Supplement newsletter - Nikola SlawsonNFTs and a Thousand True Fans - Article from a16z.com (Andreessen Horowitz's website)Sara Blakely - Founder of SpanxShane Parrish - Author, founder of Farnam StreetAtomic Habits by James ClearJosh Wolfe - Investor, founder of Lux CapitalBusiness Insider - American news websiteThe Hustle - NewsletterBessemer Venture Partners - American venture capital firmThe Washington Post - American daily newspaperThe New York Times - American daily newspaperThe Wall Street Journal - American business-focused, English-language international daily newspaperBrandon Stanton - Author of Humans of New York*FOLLOW LONDON WRITERS' SALONFor show notes, transcripts and to attend our live podcasts visit podcast.londonwriterssalon.comFor free writing sessions, join free Writers' Hours: writershour.comFollow London Writers' Salon:Twitter: twitter.com/WritersSalonInstagram: instagram.com/londonwriterssalonFacebook: facebook.com/LondonWritersSalon*CREDITSProduction by Victoria Spooner. Since discovering the art of reporting at her high school newspaper, Polina Marinova Pompliano has built a name for herself as an accomplished journalist and entrepreneur. Polina graduated from the University of Georgia in 2013 with a degree in journalism and sociology, having experience as Editor-in-Chief of the school paper and internships at CNN and USA Today under her belt. Chasing a long-held dream to pursue journalism in New York City, Polina hustled through 16-hour workdays to turn her dreams into a reality, ultimately landing a role as a social media editor at Fortune Magazine. Polina worked her way up to reporting on entrepreneurship and eventually led daily curation of The Term Sheet, a must-read morning newsletter by Fortune on tech and venture capital. Along the way, Polina had also been hard at work building a newsletter dedicated solely to highlighting the profiles of interesting and successful people and companies. As readership and her pull to build The Profile into a broader media company grew, in March of 2020 (at the start of the pandemic), Polina took a leap of faith and quit her role at Fortune to pursue The Profile full-time. In this week's episode of Passages, I ask Polina about her journey studying and pursuing journalism, how she found her way to Fortune, her experience reporting on finance & venture capital (topics she initially knew nothing about), a day-in-the-life working for a major media publication, and lessons she's learned from reporting on the greats. From aspiring journalists, to entrepreneurs, to anyone interested in the life and rise of a major media reporter, this episode was made for you. -------- Mentioned in today's episode: Coffee with a Journalist: Polina Marinova, Fortune: https://bit.ly/3kd3z3O “I quit my job at the start of the pandemic to launch a company. In this episode, I'm speaking with author and journalist Polina Marinova Pompliano. At the beginning of the pandemic, she left her high-profile job as author of Fortune's Term Sheet to pursue her own path with The Profile, a new media company she founded to focus on learning from the most successful people and companies. We talk about the challenges she has encountered along the way, beginning with moving to the United States as a kid and having to learn English.

Polina (@polina_marinova) is a writer, an entrepreneur, and creator of The Profile. The Profile is a media that company allows you to "Learn from the most successful people and companies every Sunday morning." Polina and I first met each other during a invite only mastermind session that was put together by "The Hustle." Once I discovered Polina's work, I instantly became hooked and I subscribed to her newsletter. Polina combines a journalistic writing style with her own unique perspective and uses her insight to create Profiles on some of the worlds most successful and inspirational figures. In addition, she writes a members only Dossier, in which she does a deep dive on one specific figure and brings us the deep level thinking, habits and behaviors that successful individuals display in their lives. This was my favorite conversation I've had yet on the podcast. I walked away from this interview inspired and ready to take action on my own work.

Goodbye checks and balances, hello authoritarian shitshow! In the latest Gaslit Nation, Sarah and Andrea discuss the demolishment of checks and balances now that the independence and integrity of the judiciary are gone – joining a legislature that has been, in the words of Senator Patrick Leahy, reduced to little more than an arm of the Trump White House. As we predicted, this was a historic week for America, one that will be remembered as a turning point toward consolidated autocracy. So speak while you can still speak, and vote while you can still vote. We discuss the aftermath of the Kavanaugh confirmation, the tattered future of the Mueller investigation, the possible compromise of the FBI, and the transnational crackdown on journalists who document corruption and speak up against repressive governments. In one week, Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi went missing and was allegedly murdered in the Saudi Arabian embassy in Turkey, and Bulgarian journalist Viktoria Marinova was murdered in a Bulgarian border town, making her the third high profile journalist to be murdered in the EUthis year. Both had critiqued the repression and corruption of their countries. These are also dangerous times for US journalism, as Trump continues his attack on the free press and his dehumanization of anyone who dares criticize him. We discuss the dark future of a world run by a transnational crime syndicate seemingly held in check by no one. Many of our worst fears have been realized; those baselessly claiming a “deux ex Mueller” was coming were severely mistaken.  What we have, in the end, are ourselves and each other to save – along with what’s left of our country. We end the episode with an interview with Sydette Harry, a writer whose prescient analysis of the weaponization of digital media should have been heeded years ago, and whose advice on how to survive in an autocratic political landscape should be heeded now. A Special Announcement from Gaslit Nation Thank you to everyone who participated in the Crush the Midterms Challenge. We asked you to create a plan on CrushTheMidterms.org, tweet your plan to @gaslitnation, and from those that we received we chose a winner -- @indigoiis -- who will be sent a signed copy of Sarah’s New York Times bestselling book, The View from Flyover Country: Dispatches from the Forgotten America.  If you participated and didn’t win yet, the contest continues, a new winner announced every week, through election day, November 6th. So send us your Crush the Midterms plan if you haven’t already. We’re also introducing a new contest, the 1,000 Doors Challenge. Join Andrea in a moonshot goal of knocking on 1,000 doors between now and election day. It’s a big goal, but striving for it could help make a difference in the most important midterms in our nation’s history. Tweet a photo of yourself canvassing to @gaslitnation and the winner, chosen on November 6th, will get a signed copy of Sarah’s book and an invitation to come on our show as a special guest. A group of Harvard students created a great YouTube series called Resistance School, and their basic explainer video of how to knock on doors to get out the vote shows just how easy and fun this effective outreach strategy can be!
