How Religious Mythology Shapes Sexual Norms

Strange But True: Ancient Egyptians were so into oral sex, they put it in their religion — and religious art, Salon, Matthew Rosza, January 29, 2023 Sex and morality have been tightly controlled by religion throughout history, shaping societal attitudes toward sexuality. The discussion begins with ancient Egypt, where gods were depicted engaging in acts like autofellatio as part of creation myths. While some assume ancient societies were more sexually open, the reality is that Egypt had conservative sexual norms comparable to their neighbors in Israel. The control of sex, particularly by religious institutions, has historically been a tool of power, reinforcing shame and guilt around natural human behavior. Victorian England is often blamed for sexual repression, but it's argued that this is more a product of later interpretations than the reality of Victorian life. The Victorians were far from prudish in private, as demonstrated by explicit personal writings, including Queen Victoria's enthusiastic comments about Prince Albert. More broadly, history shows fluctuating attitudes toward sex, from the uninhibited Greeks and Romans to later societies that sought to regulate and repress it. Religion, particularly Christianity, often attempts to define acceptable sexual behavior, controlling it in ways that reinforce their broader authority. A notable aspect of ancient Egyptian sexuality is their exclusion of homosexuality from their records, raising questions about whether labeling and recognizing sexual identities make societies more tolerant or simply more aware of division. Regardless of historical shifts, the pattern remains: sex is a fundamental human drive, and societies continuously shape and reshape its role based on cultural and religious influences. Ultimately, the gods people create reflect their own desires and societal norms, further proving that human behavior, rather than divine decree, dictates morality. The Non-Prophets, Episode 24.10.2 featuring Jason Sherwood, Aaron Jensen, Richard Firth-Godbehere and Scott Dickie.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Why the moral panic over "grooming" is so effective at manipulating the right-wing mind

Salon, Matthew Rosza, January 30, 2023 http://bit.ly/3xcJxyHThis segment discusses the moral panic surrounding the term "grooming," particularly in relation to LGBTQ+ people, and how it is being weaponized by right-wing politicians, particularly in Florida under Ron DeSantis. Historically, moral panics have been used to demonize specific groups—examples include the witch hunts and the Nazis' rise to power. The latest iteration of this tactic is the banning of books and restricting discussions around LGBTQ+ topics in schools under the pretense of "protecting children." The panel critiques the effectiveness of this fear-based messaging, pointing out that invoking child safety is an emotional trigger that stirs public outrage, even when there's no factual basis. The term "grooming" is being misused to conflate LGBTQ+ identities with pedophilia, despite no evidence supporting such a connection. Instead of addressing actual risk factors for child abuse—such as poverty, lack of education, and inadequate mental health services—conservatives are using the "grooming" narrative as a political weapon. They also highlight the hypocrisy of these fearmongers, who ignore well-documented abuses within religious institutions like the Catholic Church. The discussion expands to how right-wing leaders, including DeSantis, use these tactics to rally their base by creating an "us vs. them" mentality, turning marginalized communities into scapegoats. The panel draws parallels to past laws in the UK, like Section 28, which banned "promoting" homosexuality, a vague and harmful policy that took over a decade to repeal. Ultimately, the panel argues that real child protection efforts should focus on economic stability, education, and community support rather than scapegoating LGBTQ+ people or banning books. The fear-mongering around grooming isn't about protecting kids—it's about controlling the narrative and demonizing marginalized communities for political gain. The Non-Prophets, Episode 24.10.1 featuring Jason Sherwood, Aaron Jensen, Richard Firth-Godbehere and Scott Dickie.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Scientists sound alarm over troubling phenomena forcing them to 'rethink' everything 'Predictability has become more challenging'The Cool Down, By Chelsea Cook, on February 14, 2025https://www.thecooldown.com/green-tech/unpredictable-climate-patterns-shift/ In the face of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns and rising climate change risks, scientists are sounding the alarm over how outdated models are failing to provide accurate forecasts for extreme weather events. Researchers are struggling to adjust their climate models in the face of shifting ocean currents, unprecedented flooding, and the overall volatility of weather. These challenges are making it difficult to prepare for natural disasters that are disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities.Despite the urgency for enhanced research and preparedness, political pressures and budget cuts are undermining the very institutions needed to address these growing climate risks. Powerful corporations have consistently ignored or downplayed the significance of climate change, focusing on short-term profits rather than long-term solutions. This has led to a precarious situation where climate uncertainty looms large, and scientific institutions, underfunded and under attack, are struggling to guide us toward meaningful solutions. As one speaker highlights, "The chickens are coming home to roost," echoing a sentiment that the consequences of our current inaction will soon become unavoidable. As these extreme weather events become more frequent and severe, it's essential for policymakers to prioritize research and funding to better understand and mitigate the effects of climate change. However, this is increasingly difficult in a political climate where corporate interests are driving decisions, and scientific efforts are being hindered. In response to this urgent situation, there is a call for increased public involvement, from supporting climate-friendly policies to reducing individual carbon footprints through lifestyle changes. Yet, as discussed, the real key lies in corporate responsibility and the government's role in funding and protecting climate research. Until these larger systemic changes occur, the battle against climate change will remain a monumental challenge. The Non-Prophets, Episode 24.9.4 featuring Cynthia McDonald, Infidel64, Aaron Jensen and AJBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Yes, there is a lawsuit that could eliminate Section 504khou.com, By Texas And Several Other States Could End It, on February 15, 2025https://www.khou.com/article/news/verify/section-504-lawsuit/285-643af794-fb84-4b84-a3fd-d8060ec5db71 The Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, filed a lawsuit challenging the inclusion of gender dysphoria under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in federally funded institutions. The lawsuit aims to remove gender identity protections, particularly under the Biden administration's recent changes, arguing that Section 504 itself is unconstitutional. The outcome could affect many individuals across Texas and beyond, impacting access to essential services like education, healthcare, and public accommodations, which rely on these nondiscrimination protections. If Section 504 were struck down, it could remove protections for individuals with various disabilities, not just those affected by gender dysphoria. These protections ensure equal access to services, such as wheelchair ramps, classroom accommodations, medical device use, and more. Beyond the LGBTQ+ community, many people with disabilities, such as diabetes, autism, or visual impairments, rely on these rights for their day-to-day lives. The potential loss of these protections could harm vulnerable populations, particularly in public institutions, like schools, hospitals, and other government-funded services. The broader implication is that removing these protections could set a dangerous precedent for dismantling anti-discrimination laws, affecting millions who benefit from them. The legal and political trends surrounding this lawsuit reflect a growing shift in how disability rights and LGBTQ+ protections are framed. Those opposing gender identity protections often view them as part of a broader "woke" agenda, but the consequences of dismantling these protections could affect many individuals across various communities. With a polarized political climate, where personal interests and ideological lines blur, there's a significant risk that broader legal protections could be weakened, jeopardizing the rights of marginalized groups. The lawsuit is further complicated by the current political and judicial environment, where a more conservative Supreme Court has been inclined to reverse precedents and interpret laws based on tradition rather than established legal frameworks. If this lawsuit succeeds, it could lead to the elimination of vital protections, not just for transgender individuals, but for many others who rely on Section 504 for equality and access to necessary services. The Non-Prophets, Episode 24.9.3 featuring Cynthia McDonald, Infidel64, Aaron Jensen and AJBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Lawmakers argue that banning Pride Flags maintains a neutral space, while allowing the historical display of Nazi and Confederate flags could aid in teaching about World War II and the Civil War. Many, particularly from the LGBTQ+ community, have condemned the proposal as discriminatory and harmful. The situation highlights the ongoing struggles surrounding LGBTQ+ rights, as some people push back against displaying any symbols that represent marginalized identities. The bill's controversial nature extends beyond flags, revealing deeper concerns about ideology control and the suppression of certain groups. Critics point out that such policies perpetuate a dangerous narrative that harms the LGBTQ+ community, especially those already facing high rates of discrimination and suicide. The discussion then shifts to broader concerns about the government's role in controlling public symbols and speech, with some arguing that the true agenda is to reinforce conformity and suppress those whose existence challenges entrenched worldviews. The impact on LGBTQ+ students, particularly those from transgender communities, is seen as potentially devastating. With suicide rates higher among these groups due to discrimination, critics argue that such bills could exacerbate an already harmful environment. Moreover, the narrative around biological sex versus gender identity is being distorted in public policies, as seen in recent executive orders attempting to define gender in simplistic, scientifically inaccurate terms. In response, community members are encouraged to actively resist such policies, engage in public discourse, and stand against the normalization of oppressive ideologies. In 2016, a figure named Jack Lasoda, writing under the pen name "Ziz," began publishing a blog combining radical ideas such as rationalism, anarchism, ethical veganism, and others, which led to the formation of a group known as the Zizans. Over time, they became more extreme, culminating in a series of violent incidents including the blocking of exits at an event and the brutal attacks that followed, one of which involved a landlord being severely injured and another resulting in a murder. The story takes a particularly chilling turn in 2022, when Ziz faked her own death, which was publicly reported, only to reemerge later. The group's violent spree continued into 2023, with members involved in a murder and a deadly police confrontation. Despite arrests in 2025, doubts persist about whether the group has truly been dismantled, or if they are merely regrouping for future actions. As this unfolds, the discussion turns to the radicalizing effects of online spaces, with commentators questioning the responsibility of social media platforms in preventing such transformations. One speaker suggests that while private messages and personal privacy must be protected, platforms still bear some responsibility to curb violent rhetoric. This leads into a broader examination of how individuals, even those who seem far removed from radicalization, can fall victim to it through selective media consumption and echo chambers. The conversation expands further into the dynamics of fringe movements, especially those combining anarchism, transhumanism, and radical identity politics, with reflections on how such movements form and what makes them turn dangerous. The discussion emphasizes that any movement, regardless of its ideological leanings, can become a breeding ground for extremism if it creates an "us versus them" mentality. Finally, the issue of transparency in law enforcement and the role of skepticism is raised, underscoring the need for constant self-reflection and critical thinking in preventing the spread of dangerous ideologies. It is suggested that, in addition to skepticism, society needs more rebels willing to challenge authority to avoid the kind of radicalization that leads to violence and societal harm. The Non-Prophets, Episode 24.9.1 featuring Cynthia McDonald, Infidel64, Aaron Jensen and AJBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Hosted by Eli Slack, the discussion is prompted by an article from The Conversation by Michael Connors and Peter Hallagan, examining whether beliefs and delusions share common psychological roots. The article highlights that the primary difference between the two lies not in the mental process of formation but in the number of adherents, challenging our perceptions of "normal" beliefs versus delusional thinking. The panel delves into a case study of a woman experiencing postpartum psychosis, whose delusions were shaped by interpreting ordinary stimuli in the context of her personal biases. This underscores a universal mechanism: beliefs, whether true or false, arise from subjective interpretations of sensory input filtered through emotional and cognitive biases. Eli emphasizes that religious beliefs, while not inherently indicative of mental instability, share no epistemological advantage over delusions. The group critiques the article's lack of a clear definition of belief, a flaw that hampers meaningful discourse. Kelley asserts that beliefs are often embraced without critical thought, making them stagnant compared to an active pursuit of understanding. The panel also discusses societal double standards—other religions are dismissed as myths, while Christianity often escapes such scrutiny due to its dominant cultural presence.Aaron and Kelley explore how psychology struggles to distinguish beliefs from delusions, suggesting that the objective truth—or lack thereof—defines the difference. Aaron provocatively argues that religion meets the criteria for delusion, as it lacks verifiable evidence, yet garners social acceptance when widely shared. Kelley supports this by highlighting how belief systems solidify when critical thought ceases. The conversation concludes with reflections on societal norms and the dangers of uncritically accepted beliefs.  Americans use the Book of Revelation to talk about immigration – and always haveRNS, By Yii-Jan Lin, on October 24, 2024https://religionnews.com/2024/10/24/americans-use-the-book-of-revelation-to-talk-about-immigration-and-always-have/The discussion focuses on the historical and ongoing use of the Bible, particularly The Book of Revelation, to demonize marginalized groups, including immigrants. This practice leverages religious imagery and rhetoric to manipulate public perception, often painting outsiders as threats to societal order. The article under review highlights how Revelation, originally a cryptic critique of Roman oppression written by a persecuted group, has been weaponized over centuries to justify bigotry and fearmongering. Despite its messages of ultimate triumph for believers, its "us versus them" narrative has provided a convenient tool for exclusion and vilification. The panel examines the broader implications of using Revelation and similar texts to influence policy and societal attitudes. Politicians often exploit these texts for psychological manipulation, instilling fear to galvanize support for restrictive policies. By framing issues like immigration as moral or religious battles, leaders manipulate voters, invoking apocalyptic imagery to make dissent feel complicit in divine punishment. This strategy simplifies complex socio-political issues into binary moral conflicts, eroding nuanced understanding and fostering division. The conversation also addresses the broader patterns of tribalism and fear inherent in human psychology. Tribalism, coupled with humanity's propensity for pattern recognition, fuels the tendency to “other” certain groups. This innate trait, present throughout history, is exacerbated during times of uncertainty, making societies more susceptible to scapegoating. The Bible, while not the origin of such tendencies, amplifies them by offering frameworks that justify exclusion and superiority under the guise of divine authority. The discussion critiques how this pattern persists disproportionately in the U.S. compared to other developed nations. Militant Christianity, prevalent in America and certain parts of the Global South, often contradicts the supposed central message of love and understanding found in the teachings of Jesus. The irony is underscored by historical examples, such as anti-Irish sentiment in the 19th century, to demonstrate how bigotry morphs but remains rooted in similar fears and justifications.Ultimately, the panel highlights the dangers of allowing such rhetoric to shape public discourse and policy. Education about the historical and cultural contexts of biblical texts is presented as a vital tool for countering misuse and encouraging critical thinking. While tribalism may be inherent, challenging its manifestations through awareness and inclusivity offers a way to combat the divisive narratives that continue to exploit religious texts for power and control. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.49.2 featuring Jimmy Jr., Kelley Laughlin, Aaron Jensen and Eli SlackBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

However, their threats lack teeth since the funding at issue comes from private endowments, not state coffers. This political posturing appears to be a ploy to score points with conservative voters rather than a practical policy initiative. Critics argue it sends a harmful message of exclusion to LGBTQ students, undermining their validity and experiences.Panelists discussed how political maneuvers like these are often performative, designed to appeal to a base rather than reflect genuine beliefs. The conversation touched on the dangers of spreading misinformation, such as false claims about gender reassignment surgeries for minors. These narratives perpetuate fear and ignorance, weaponizing religion and conservative values to maintain power structures while marginalizing vulnerable communities. The role of education in combating such divisiveness was also explored. Public universities are seen as vital spaces for exploring complex societal issues, including LGBTQ studies, which intersect with fields like psychology, sociology, and biology. The panel noted that restricting such education not only stifles academic growth but also denies critical resources to students and professionals seeking to understand and support diverse communities.Religion's alignment with conservative politics was another key topic. The panel suggested that Christianity's simplistic, dogmatic nature makes it compatible with the polarized, single-issue voting promoted by modern conservatism, especially around topics like abortion. Mills reportedly airdropped explicit images found on the victim's phone to his own device. After this was discovered, police became involved, and Mills was arrested with bail set at $7,500. A second victim later came forward, corroborating allegations against him, leading to a second arrest. Despite the seriousness of the allegations, the church has not publicly addressed the issue on its platforms. The discussion turns towards the façade of the "happy and healthy Christian man" often seen in churches, with one participant reflecting on their own experiences. They highlight the dangers of societal and religious pressures to conform to specific ideals of masculinity, suggesting that such pressures can lead to unhealthy behaviors and repression of one's true self. They discuss the harmful implications of conversion therapy, which extends beyond radical programs to broader Christian contexts, often enforcing a narrative of sexual purity that leads to internal conflict and, in some cases, immoral behavior. They highlight the hypocrisy often present in religious settings, where leaders who preach about sexual morality may themselves engage in immoral acts, reflecting a disconnect between preached beliefs and personal behavior.Participants express a desire for churches to stop promoting harmful narratives around sexual purity, arguing that such repression only leads to more significant issues, as individuals struggle with their identities and desires. The conversation also touches on the broader societal expectations placed on men, examining how phrases like "locker room talk" perpetuate harmful stereotypes and allow inappropriate behaviors to persist unchecked. They argue for the importance of open dialogue about sexuality and self-acceptance, asserting that understanding one's sexual identity is crucial for healthy relationships and personal well-being. This imagery illustrates the irrevocable nature of choices related to life and death, emphasizing that a slow and deliberate approach is crucial in navigating these sensitive issues. The conversation acknowledges the stigma surrounding suicide, particularly within Christian contexts, which have historically framed it as a moral failure. The impact of early cults attempting to control suicide as a means of martyrdom is noted, highlighting the layered complexities of religious interpretations.A significant theme is the financial aspect of the church, where a decline in attendance and tithes is tied to the conversation around suicide. There is a sense that the church's reluctance to address these issues stems not only from moral concerns but also from financial interests, suggesting a need for transparency and a reevaluation of priorities within religious institutions. The speakers advocate for a process that allows individuals to reclaim their bodily autonomy regarding death, arguing that the right to self-determination should be upheld. They emphasize the importance of having a thorough and supportive process in place, where individuals can engage with medical professionals. This approach is seen as a way to protect those who might change their minds and seek help during their decision-making journey. The dialogue underscores the belief that the ultimate goal is well-being, and the availability of a supportive process could prevent unnecessary deaths by offering help to those in need.Overall, the conversation reflects a desire to normalize discussions around suicide and to establish a framework that prioritizes individual choice, understanding, and support, rather than stigma and judgment.CNN.com, By Reuters, on September 25, 2024https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/24/europe/switzerland-arrests-sarco-suicide-capsule-intl-hnk/index.html The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.41.2 featuring Infidel64 Stephen Harder , Aaron Jensen, and AJ.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Colorado will now make Catholic hospitals say what services they won't provideThe Friendly Atheist, By Hemant Mehta, on October 1, 2024https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/colorado-will-now-make-catholic-hospitalsColorado has passed a new law requiring all hospitals to disclose any procedures they won't perform due to non-medical reasons. The "Patients Right to Know Act" ensures transparency, especially targeting Catholic hospitals that follow religious doctrine rather than medical expertise in determining the services they offer. Many Catholic hospitals, instead of being clear about their religious affiliations, use generic names like “Mercy Hospital,” hiding their policies from the public. This legislation aims to solve that, allowing patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare based on the services the hospitals offer or refuse. Catholic hospitals, governed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, refuse to provide services like abortions, sterilizations, and gender-affirming care, as they are considered to violate Catholic doctrine. These policies put patients, particularly women and transgender individuals, at risk when seeking crucial medical treatments. The new law will require such hospitals to list non-medical reasons for refusing procedures on a state website. However, hospitals are not required to display this information on their own websites, creating a loophole. Many patients may not check the state site, and by the time they realize a procedure isn't available, it could be too late, especially in emergency situations. The controversy centers on whether religious hospitals should be able to refuse care based on faith when operating as medical institutions. Many argue that religious beliefs should not influence healthcare decisions, which should be grounded in medical science and patient needs. It is raised that if organizations choose to provide healthcare, they should abide by the standards of the medical profession, not their religious dogma. This concern has been illustrated with hypothetical comparisons: it's like a church-run car dealership deciding not to install steering wheels because they believe “Jesus takes the wheel.” This is especially relevant in rural areas, where Catholic hospitals may be the only available option. Here, patients are left with no alternative care options, and doctors working in these hospitals might not be allowed to perform certain procedures even if they personally want to, limiting their experience and growth as medical professionals. Lastly, while some think this law may encourage alternative healthcare providers to fill in the gaps left by religious hospitals in rural areas, others are skeptical that this would happen on a significant scale. The Catholic Church, with its influence and deep financial resources, is unlikely to reconsider its policies, leaving patients vulnerable unless further reforms are introduced. Colorado will now make Catholic hospitals say what services they won't provide. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.41.1 featuring Infidel64, Stephen Harder , Aaron Jensen, and AJ.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

How US Public Schools Became a New Religious BattlegroundUS News/Reuthers, By Liya Cui and Joseph Ax, on Aug. 7, 2024https://www.usnews.com/news/top-news/articles/2024-08-07/how-us-public-schools-became-a-new-religious-battleground In a discussion centering on the tension between religion and public education in the United States, the core theme highlights the rise of Christian nationalism and its implications for American identity. Proponents of Christian nationalism assert that to be American is to inherently be Christian, a claim often bolstered by a misinterpretation of the intentions of the nation's founders. Historical evidence suggests the founders sought a secular state with a democratic foundation that allowed individuals the freedom to practice any religion or none at all. They envisioned a country based on self-determination and the separation of church and state, a principle that is currently being challenged in places like Louisiana and Oklahoma. In Louisiana, new school policies mandate that the Ten Commandments be prominently displayed in every classroom, a move seen as a clear violation of the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits government endorsement of religion. Meanwhile, Oklahoma's educational system has adopted a policy requiring the Bible to be taught across all grade levels, with teachers expected to integrate biblical references into their lessons. These actions are drawing criticism for infringing upon the constitutional separation of church and state and are seen as attempts to indoctrinate students with a singular religious perspective. The conversation delves into the broader social and psychological aspects, suggesting that such policies stem from resistance to inclusivity and a desire to maintain traditional, conservative values. With a conservative majority in the Supreme Court, some lawmakers feel emboldened to push these boundaries, believing there is a possibility of getting away with such violations. The belief is that by presenting these religious teachings as fundamental to American identity, they can rally their base by portraying governmental pushback as an overreach and an infringement on religious freedom. This discussion also touches on the potential impact of these policies on educators and students. There is concern that the emphasis on religious content will detract from the teaching of critical thinking and evidence-based knowledge. This could undermine the quality of education and the development of well-rounded, analytical thinkers. Critics argue that a government's role should be to create unity from diversity, not to impose uniformity of thought. The conversation concludes by emphasizing the importance of maintaining a clear boundary between religion and government to prevent the criminalization of thoughts and beliefs. The current U.S. motto, "In God We Trust," is contrasted with the historical motto "E Pluribus Unum," advocating for a return to the latter as it better represents the inclusive and unifying ideals upon which the country was founded. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.33.4 featuring Scott Dickie, Aaron Jensen, Jimmy Jr. and "Eli" (Eli Slack)Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Inside Robby Starbuck's anti-DEI war on Tractor Supply, John Deere and Harley-DavidsonUS Today, by Jessica Guynn, on Aug. 2, 2024https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2024/08/02/robby-starbuck-harley-davidson-john-deere-dei/74608637007/The discussion delves into the recent activism of a conservative figure who has initiated a boycott against Harley-Davidson due to their support for LGBTQ+ initiatives and other so-called "woke" causes. This individual has previously targeted companies like Tractor Supply and John Deere for similar reasons, claiming his goal is to eliminate politics from corporate America. His efforts have gained some support among conservative circles but have also been met with criticism for being divisive and potentially harmful to societal progress. The narrative reveals a pattern of voices striving for change, where the loudest, not necessarily the fairest or most just, tends to dominate the conversation. There is a concern about the lack of counter voices promoting diversity and equality, highlighting a struggle between maintaining power and embracing a more inclusive workforce. The conversation also touches on the broader context of white men fearing the loss of power and privilege in the face of increasing diversity. This fear seems to be driving the pushback against initiatives aimed at promoting equity and inclusion. The historical context of economic systems exploiting underpaid labor is brought up as a possible underlying motive for resisting change. The debate suggests that there's an implicit desire to maintain a power structure that benefits a select few at the expense of broader societal welfare. The dialogue further explores the political implications of such activism, noting that bigotry has unfortunately become intertwined with conservative politics in the United States. Despite the traditional conservative emphasis on small government, there's an acknowledgment that ensuring equal rights and opportunities might require some form of intervention. The discussion highlights a perceived link between conservatism and authoritarianism, suggesting that those with conservative views might be more inclined towards authoritarian control, particularly in contexts involving diverse populations. The conversation concludes with a reflection on the concept of "white standardizing," where being white is seen as the default, and other identities are viewed as deviations. This mindset perpetuates a status quo that favors certain groups, contributing to the resistance against progressive changes aimed at fostering inclusivity and diversity. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.33.3 featuring Scott Dickie, Aaron Jensen, Jimmy Jr. and "Eli" (Eli Slack)Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Anti-trans Texas pastor arrested after paying undercover cop for sexThe Friendly Atheist, By Hemant Mehta, on Aug 05, 2024https://www.friendlyatheist.com/p/anti-trans-texas-pastor-arrestedThe recent discussion sheds light on the issue of hypocrisy within religious leadership, exemplified by the arrest of a senior pastor in Plano, Texas, for soliciting a prostitute. This incident, referred to as a moral failure by the church, sparks a broader conversation about what constitutes morality and the frequent dissonance between public preaching and private actions among religious figures. The dialogue delves into the inherent hypocrisy of condemning behaviors that leaders themselves secretly engage in, highlighting a pervasive problem within various societal institutions. The conversation points to a deeper problem of hypocrisy among leaders in politics, religion, and other organizations. Despite publicly denouncing certain behaviors, these individuals often privately engage in them without being held accountable. The discussion emphasizes the need for trustworthiness as the most crucial quality in leaders, arguing that without accountability, hypocrisy thrives, eroding public trust and hindering progress. The call for honest and reliable leaders is seen as a necessary step toward addressing societal issues effectively. The conversation further explores the endemic nature of hypocrisy within religious circles, particularly among conservative groups. This pattern is often rooted in the suppression of personal identity from a young age, leading to a disconnect between private struggles and public condemnation. The discussion also touches on the broader societal implications, questioning why these patterns are more prevalent in certain regions and what can be done to foster a more inclusive and honest environment within religious institutions.Addressing the broader societal impact, the conversation suggests that avoiding hypocrisy requires a shift in how individuals identify themselves and approach critical thinking. By fostering a culture of skepticism and critical analysis, individuals can resist the pull of tribalism and fear-mongering that often drives hypocritical behavior. The discussion calls for a collective effort to reject leaders who promote divisive ideologies and instead support those who advocate for unity and inclusivity. Finally, the conversation examines the intersection of hypocrisy and the conservative mindset, particularly in the context of the LGBTQ+ community. The alignment of conservative values with traditional religious doctrines often leads to the oppression of those who do not conform to expected norms. The dialogue underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing these patterns to create a more accepting and authentic society, where leaders are judged by their integrity rather than their adherence to dogmatic beliefs. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.33.2 featuring Scott Dickie, Aaron Jensen, Jimmy Jr. and "Eli" (Eli Slack)Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Burr subsequently sued Grinder for allegedly mishandling his private data, claiming the app's privacy practices were fraudulent and dishonest. This case highlights broader issues of privacy and personal integrity within religious institutions, especially concerning LGBTQ+ identities and the challenges individuals face in reconciling personal and public lives. The conversation delves into the repercussions for Monsignor Burr, noting the significant impact on his career and personal life. His outing as a result of these revelations, against his will, underscores the lack of agency individuals often have in controlling their narrative, especially within conservative religious contexts that stigmatize non-heteronormative identities. The panelists express sympathy for Burr's plight, emphasizing the ethical implications of public exposure and its effects on personal well-being and professional reputation. Criticism is directed towards the Catholic Church's historical stance on LGBTQ+ issues, highlighting systemic oppression and the challenges faced by queer individuals within religious settings. The discussion questions whether religious institutions like the Catholic Church should reassess their policies on celibacy and sexuality, advocating for greater acceptance and support for LGBTQ+ clergy members to live authentically without fear of reprisal or condemnation. The lawsuit against Grinder raises broader concerns about data privacy and corporate responsibility. Panelists argue for stricter regulations to protect user data from unauthorized access and exploitation by third parties, advocating for legislative measures akin to those seen in the European Union. This case underscores the need for transparency and ethical standards in how tech companies handle sensitive user information, challenging current practices that prioritize profit over privacy rights. Overall, the segment highlights the complex interplay between personal identity, institutional norms, and legal rights, urging a reevaluation of societal attitudes towards privacy and sexuality in both religious and secular contexts. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.33.1 featuring Scott Dickie, Aaron Jensen, Jimmy Jr. and "Eli" (Eli Slack)Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

This delectable pastry, granted EU protected food status in 2008, traces its origins back to 1891. Inspired by the charitable acts of St. Martin, who famously shared his cloak with a beggar, the croissant was born from a baker's post-sermon inspiration to craft a treat symbolizing generosity and community sharing. The story resonates deeply, highlighting the enduring impact of selflessness and compassion across centuries. Locals proudly uphold the tradition, viewing the croissant not just as a culinary delight but as a testament to their cultural heritage and values. The EU protection ensures that its name and authenticity are preserved, guarding against imitations and upholding its historical significance. The conversation around St. Martin's Croissant sparks reflections on the broader themes of morality, religious attribution, and cultural identity. It prompts questions about the nature of sainthood and the attribution of goodness to divine influence versus individual conscience. Despite differing views on religious canonization, there's a consensus on the universal appeal of kindness and altruism embedded in the croissant's story. As the dialogue explores the implications of cultural designation and protection, parallels are drawn to similar efforts worldwide. The EU's initiative underscores the importance of safeguarding cultural icons amidst globalization's homogenizing forces. It also raises discussions about whether other nations should adopt similar measures to protect their culinary and cultural heritage. The multifaceted discussion reveals how food can serve as a conduit for preserving and celebrating communal values. It challenges perceptions about identity and authenticity in an interconnected world, where local traditions can thrive alongside global influences. St. Martin's Croissant emerges not just as a delicious treat but as a symbol of resilience, community pride, and the enduring power of a good story. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.25.4 featuring Scott Dickie, Aaron Jensen, Jason Friedman and Helen GreeneBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

The incident, reported by Hemant Mehta on June 10th, 2024, details how the church justified its action citing concerns over the service dog's reaction to live band music and flashing lights during services. This justification stands in contrast to federal laws under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which mandate accommodation for service animals in public spaces. The discussion during the broadcast highlights broader issues of religious privilege and the implications of exemptions churches have from certain laws that govern other public and private entities. The conversation among hosts underscores skepticism towards the church's decision, questioning whether it reflects genuine safety concerns or a broader bias against accommodating individuals with disabilities. Bible-Infused Curriculum Sparks Texas-Sized Controversy Over Christianity in the ClassroomThe 74, By Linda Jacobson , on June 7, 2024https://www.the74million.org/article/bible-infused-curriculum-sparks-texas-sized-controversy-over-christianity-in-the-classroom/ In a controversial move, Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath has introduced a new elementary reading curriculum featuring Bible stories, emphasizing Judeo-Christian traditions. This curriculum, part of a classical education model, aims to enhance students' cultural vocabulary by integrating ancient texts like the Bible. Morath argues that this approach is crucial for tackling complex subjects later in education. However, critics, including scholars and former education officials, argue that this curriculum presents a Christian-biased history, neglects other religions, and significant historical movements like the Enlightenment. They warn of potential First Amendment violations and the challenges teachers might face in discussing religious content appropriately.Supporters view this change as a step towards a more rigorous education, with some conservatives dismissing concerns about the biblical emphasis. Critics, including Democratic Representative James Tarico, argue that it marginalizes many Texans by focusing predominantly on Christian content. They question why other literary works and religious texts are not included, suggesting that the curriculum could be more inclusive. This debate also touches on the broader implications of intertwining religion with public education, raising concerns about the separation of church and state. The new curriculum is part of a larger trend seen in other conservative states like Florida, where similar educational reforms are being implemented. Financial incentives are being offered to school districts that adopt the new curriculum, highlighting the lengths to which proponents are willing to go to see these changes implemented. As the U.S. Supreme Court remains conservative, there is potential for these changes to be enshrined into constitutional law, affecting the educational landscape nationwide. This could have significant implications for the inclusivity and secular nature of public education, potentially reshaping how subjects are taught and which materials are considered appropriate. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.25.2 featuring Scott Dickie, Aaron Jensen, Jason Friedman and Helen GreeneBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Southern Baptists are poised to ban churches with women pastors. Labeling the Bible as a "guy book," the SBC has mandated that churches under its umbrella dismiss women from preaching roles. Failure to comply results in withdrawal of financial and organizational support. This move affects approximately 47,000 churches affiliated with the SBC, many of which have long embraced women in leadership positions. The immediate fallout is palpable, with congregations now forced to choose between financial stability and their commitment to gender equality. This decision has placed progressive Baptist churches in a difficult position, torn between ethical principles and pragmatic concerns. The debate intensifies against the backdrop of ongoing scandals within the SBC, including allegations of child sexual abuse, currently under federal investigation.Critics argue that the SBC's theological stance reflects a selective interpretation of scripture, catering to a conservative faction within the denomination. The controversy not only complicates efforts for diversity within the predominantly white SBC but also underscores broader societal divisions over gender roles and biblical authority. As discussions unfold, the SBC faces scrutiny for potentially using doctrinal disputes as a diversion from more pressing issues like legal challenges and internal controversies. The theological implications are profound, prompting questions about the interpretation and application of scripture in modern contexts. Advocates for gender equality within religious institutions argue that such decisions hinder progress toward inclusivity and justice. Meanwhile, opponents view this as a necessary return to traditional values, essential for preserving doctrinal integrity amidst societal shifts.Looking ahead, the SBC's decision may impact its relevance and membership retention, as congregations wrestle with financial autonomy versus doctrinal adherence. The broader implications extend beyond religious circles, influencing societal debates on gender equality and religious freedom. As voices from both within and outside the SBC weigh in, the future direction of this influential denomination remains uncertain, marked by ongoing tensions between tradition, modernity, and justice. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.25.1 featuring Scott Dickie, Aaron Jensen, Jason Friedman and Helen GreeneBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

In today's episode of Truth Wanted, our super host Objectively Dan is joined by our esteemed guest Aaron Jensen!Caller #1 is up! Cooper is calling from New York to ask our hosts, how does someone deconstruct without losing hope and dealing with distressing emotions. Dan and Aaron talk about their own process when leaving faith and how to build community and purpose without the trappings of religion. In the words of Aragorn “there is always hope”.Baked Alaska also coming to us from New York is caller #2! He inquires what compelled us atheists to not believe in a God and what evidence (or lack thereof) shows God does not exist. Baked Alaska does some logical fallacies (appeal to population for example) to prove his point, when as we know dear listener, we need more than opinions and emotions to show something is real, esp. when it comes to a God claim.Welcome R, caller #3 from the unknown void! He posits that Newton and other scientists of his time, especially during the Enlightenment, had to hide their anti-theist opinions. Perhaps, but we have no proof. Dan and Aaron push back against this opinion based on his own writings and opinions. When it comes to great minds who came before us, unless they state otherwise, we can only wonder what their true position was in regards to a deity existing or not.Caller #4! Sumartono gives our hosts a ring to discuss atheists vs. theists morality, what does it mean to be moral without a God which leads down the epistemological path of the watchmaker's argument. To round out the show, Steven from Mississippi has fallen down the YouTube ancient alien conspiracy rabbit hole. Steven's mind is blown! Though our hosts walk him through obvious questions and encourage Steven to give some pause before concluding aliens made such wonders like the pyramids. He isn't saying it's aliens….

'Barbie' review: Greta Gerwig film celebrates female empowerment but falls short on biblical values, The Christian Post, By Leah MarieAnn Klett, August 3, 2023, https://www.christianpost.com/news/barbie-lauds-female-empowerment-falls-short-on-biblical-truths.html The Non-Prophets, Episode 22.33.4 featuring Helen Greene, The Well-Known Skeptic, Aaron Jensen and"Jimmy Jr"Today's topic is a review of the recent smash hit Barbie. A review of Greta Gerwig's Barbie film, which celebrates female empowerment. But according to Leah MarieAnn Klett, it falls short of biblical values.Leah's concerns centered around her claim that it falls short of biblical morality. The review assumes the Bible is a paragon of gender equality, but her case fails miserably. She puts forward the idea that the bible teaches that all are created equal, she even included links to Genesis 1:26. But, there's nothing in the verse about gender equality. Yet another example of a Christian misquoting the Bible. The bible is rife with examples of misogyny and women's subjugation. On the other hand, the message of Barbie is about feminism. The critic claims that the film places a strong focus on the idea of self-reliance and individualistic pursuit of happiness in contrast to the prioritization of community and family values in the Bible. The reviewer also stressed that women must take control and dominate others to earn respect contrasting with the biblical notion of mutual respect between men and women. Aren't women supposed to be silent in church, not supposed to teach anyone? They are correct, Christian values are a stark contrast to what this movie is about. Feminism, female empowerment are all good things that the Bible does not give us. It is important for girls to also understand that they do have a choice on what type of person they are.She was concerned that men in the movie were treated as second-class citizens, but that's the point. Ryan Gosling's character falls into this patriarchy, ideas that are something that we have to look at in the mirror. It's also important for boys and men to understand that they don't have to be part of the patriarchy, we need to be able to do some of these actions that are stereotyped as feminine qualities.Hari Neff, a trans woman played one of the Barbies and nobody cared. It doesn't matter, you're part of the community. Overall a really good representation of just accepting people for who they are. In comparison, the reviewer could not resist the desire to pander to her audience and misgender Hari. The article pointed out some of the really positive messages too, but again why tie this to religion, this is not a religious message at all. We're here to talk about the review and the Christian viewpoint, but it would be remiss to not say that Barbie is smartly written, well-produced, and well-acted. It has a lot going for it.Empowerment is vital, but it doesn't need to be at the expense of other people. That's the real message of this movie.

Southwest will appeal judge's ruling requiring 'religious liberty training', Reuters, By Daniel Wiessner, August 8, 2023, https://www.reuters.com/legal/us-judge-orders-southwest-lawyers-undergo-religious-liberty-training-2023-08-08/#:~:text=Aug%208%20(Reuters)%20%2D%20Southwest,prominent%20conservative%20Christian%20legal%20group. The Non-Prophets, Episode 22.33.3 featuring Helen Greene, The Well-Known Skeptic, Aaron Jensen and"Jimmy Jr"Southwest is appealing a judge's ruling that requires religious liberty training for three of its senior lawyers. This was in response to Southwest not meeting the judge's previous ruling. They had been ordered to inform their employees of the judges previous order, in their notice to employees they said, “Southwest does not discriminate against our employees”. The judge had previously said, “may not” instead of “does not”.In his decision, Starr said, “Some of those entities laudably provide training free of charge for those who have struggled to respect religious liberties in the manner federal law requires.” And his selection? The Judge chose to assign training from a Christian group called the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF). Why do they always seem to include freedom or liberty in their name? The ADF has been designated as an anti-LGBT hate group by The Southern Poverty Law Center. They are arguably the most influential anti-LGBT group and also spearheaded the previous administration's attack on LGBT rights. They oppose same-sex marriage. they want to criminalize same-sex activity, they oppose anti-discrimination laws, they have opposed contraception, and are the group behind the current effort to remove FDA approval for Mifepristone. They have also taken an active role in writing anti-transgender bills for State legislatures. The legal memorandum opinion and Order granting sanctions that the judge from Texas, not Florida for once. But as before, we are seeing these efforts across the country. U.S. District Judge Brantley Starr is another example of a judge using their authority to prop up Christian values in blatant violation of the Constitution. The judge is retaliating against Southwest Airlines for penalizing a Christian, he is using the legal system to infuse his own religious ideology. It's a dangerous precedent, not only for atheists but for Christians, everyone could face efforts of indoctrination as a penalty for an act that conflicts with somebody's values. There's a reason we need to keep religion out of government, when you come together as a society you have to agree on a common framework of how we're all going to live together. If one chooses religion, those religious beliefs are frequently very oppressive to other groups. Often the same people historically as victims of religious groups. They tend to inflict serious harm on groups of people that they don't like.As skeptics, the danger of religion in government is clear. We're all subject to laws, we want laws to help us get along, and to help create equality. Introducing the creep of religion into our laws and our government slowly erodes away all of our liberties and freedoms.

Skeptical Inquirer, March 2023, by Rob Palmer:Iranian Schoolgirl Gas Attacks and Havana Syndrome: A Conversation with Robert BartholomewThe Non-Prophets, Episode 22.33.2 featuring Helen Greene, The Well-Known Skeptic, Aaron Jensen and"Jimmy Jr"Today we are discussing Havana syndrome and Iranian school girls' Mass poisoning reports. An article in the Skeptical Inquirer which is called Iranian School girl cast attacks and Havana Syndrome a conversation with Robert Bartholomew. What do these two situations have in common? One began in late 2016 when the US government claimed there were ongoing attacks against its Embassy Personnel in Cuba by unknown forces using unknown weapons. In subsequent years the scope of these claimed attacks include intelligence agents other government officials and even family members stationed in a very long list of countries. Eventually, it was even claimed to have happened on the White House grounds. The symptoms of these attacks were eventually called Havana syndrome. They included everything from brain fatigue to brain damage. The mysterious unidentified Weaponry speculated for these attacks included ultrasound, infrasound, pulsed electromagnetic energy microwaves, and many other things. The second involves Iranian girls. This started in November 2022. Reports surfaced about a poison gas attack at a girl's school in Iran affecting 200 students. Reports of gas attacks then happened all across the country of Iran.As of early this year, the count of victims stood at nearly 7,000 young girls. The victims are mostly girls, there were some teachers and extraneous victims, but mostly school girls. It has been reported at over 100 schools in nearly that many cities.Speculation ranged on who caused this. The usual suspects range from either the Iranian government seeking revenge for the recent and ongoing hijab protests, to the government saying it was a false flag operation by people who wanted it to look like it was the government doing it.Functionally the diplomats have this close-knit tie to one another. They perform the same job, they're going through the same things, and they're separated from their natural environment. On the other hand, the girls in these schools have a close-knit relationship in proximity. Unfortunately, throughout recent history you can go back decades and in different countries, very often if not exclusively in Muslim majority rule countries you will find similar events. and it's always schoolgirls. There's something about being in an environment as part of a population that has no control. When you feel that you can't control things, and you're under other people's thumbs this can happen. The people in Cuba were in hostile territory always under surveillance by the Cuban government. This reeks of mass hysteria, when you have a group of diplomats that are feeling something it's likely to encourage other diplomats to say well maybe that's what I'm feeling too. Maybe we actually are under attack. When in reality it's something else completely.

Just another example of speech policing. This is not legislation, this is persecution. This is another example of religion finding its way into public life via government under the guise of parental rights. Just discrimination, repackaged and re-branded. It should disgust everybody, including Christians.Florida is determined to be Gilead from The Handmaid's Tale. We have seen their effort to make slavery seem like an internship while blocking AP African-American studies. AP Psychology is banned because it teaches that some people are different than others.Students and teachers are the ones that are getting the brunt of this. It prevents teachers from being queer supportive, preventing them from having an authentic relationship with the students. It destroys the trust that teachers and students establish with one another. Teachers have lost the ability to exercise their own judgment, they are afraid of getting in trouble. They're losing the ability to educate. Why should it matter to the state what name you're called? Under this rule, it would not allow a teacher who wants to respect their student as who they are as a person to do so. They have to call them by their dead name and use pronouns they don't identify with. It's not only a lack of respect, it puts that student at a greater risk for suicide.Societies don't collapse because people are transgender or gay. People have been transgender and gay all through human history. The reason we hear about a supposed trans agenda taking over schools is because the fascists want to use it as a weapon. The LGBTQIA community is losing basic human rights that we should all be guaranteed. It is evident that these legislators really don't care. This grab at a low-hanging fruit issue is one way they stay in power.Society is ultimately responsible, it's easy to get caught up in this game of pointing fingers, but we have to take responsibility for our involvement. This is happening all across the United States., draconian laws are preventing people from being who they are.Governments need to help solve problems, get things done, and not waste time and money persecuting others. Why don't we address poverty, or actually improve quality and access to our educational system?Governors and Presidents get the most attention, but they aren't as important as your legislators, they are the people that are making and passing laws.Instead, we pass laws like this.

Today, and despite a lengthy interregnum, the Constitution prevails,” - Justice Clarence Thomas.Recently the Supreme Court decided that affirmative action is no longer constitutional because it ruled that it violates the 14th Amendment which states that there should be no laws that restrict people based on color or their race. What had made the 14th amendment relevant was it's attempt to even the playing field among all constituents in the United States when it came to them being able to get employment and for them to be able to go to school but that is not what happened.Even though black people were citizens and paying taxes they did not have access to the same facilities as their white counterparts. Plessy vs Ferguson (a decision made in the 1800's) allowed schools to be funded separately. In most black neighborhoods, especially in the south, there were substandard school buildings, and children in the sixth and seventh grade that were provided books from second and third grade. Plessy was used to uphold Jim Crow and specifically segregation laws saying that separate but equal was okay. The modern Civil Rights Movement really started to take a new form after the death of Emmett Till. Black rights activists like Dr. King, Malcolm X, Philip Randolph, Ralph Abernathy, and James Baldwin were all a part of this movement. The Movement wasn't necessarily pushing for integration they were just pushing for equal facilities. One of the reasons being is when they started to integrate the schools black students faced violence from white mobs, white students, and parents who were vehemently trying to keep black students out.Ultimately, Thurgood Marshall argued before the US Supreme Court in the Brown vs the Board of Education case. The court overturned Plessy vs Ferguson by ruling against the Board of Education and Marshall later became the first black Justice on the court. This helped pave the way for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which allowed Affirmative action. Which required organizations to select people with more diverse backgrounds. It was not limited to black people, it helped any person that was considered a minority. The data has shown that white women have been one of the groups that happened to benefit greatly from affirmative action.Affirmative action has caused schools to make more of an attempt to recruit students who actually had the grades and merit but may not have gotten into a particular school like a Harvard because of their minority status. When the Court's decision was released, Justice Thomas took the unusual step of actually reading from his own concurring opinion. Something not typically done, but this has been a goal of his for decades. For a Justice who is known for saying nothing for years, it is not unlike him to take a victory lap. It's interesting to specifically question how Justices like Clarence Thomas really would want to go back to a colorblind Constitution when in actuality the Constitution was never colorblind.

Ryan Walters defends comments on Tulsa Race Massacre, claims words taken out of contextFox 25 News, by David Chasanov, July 7, 2023 https://okcfox.com/news/local/state-superintendent-ryan-walters-oklahoma-department-of-education-tulsa-race-massacre-critical-theory-crt-classroom-class-hannibal-johnson-raymond-doswell-greenwood-rising-black-wall-street-history-center-racist-evil-terrible-color-skin-controversy "Let's not tie it to the skin color and say that the skin color determined that," - Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters. For those not aware, far-right Oklahoma State Superintendent Walters was talking about the Tulsa race massacre in an area called Black Wall Street. This was a self-sustaining community filled with banks, schools, doctors offices, dentists, and shops. Everything that a township could use in order to be sustainable was there. But, in 1921, Dick Roland shared an elevator with a white woman named Sarah Page. While they were in the elevator Sarah screamed and then went to the authorities. She falsely accused Dick Roland of trying to assault her.The Tulsa Police put him in in jail, then a white mob went to the jail and demanded Dick to be handed over to them, the police refused. They released Dick to WWI black soldiers on the scene who had showed up to defend him against the mob.White rioters then deliberately destroyed an estimated 1,200 homes, along with churches, schools, businesses, even a hospital and library. The police force in that area even deputized citizens to become law enforcement so they could take up arms against the black township. Now moving forward to 2023, well in some places that may be more of a lateral move, Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters seems to think that a white mob attacking and destroying a black township can be taught without discussing race. The next day Walters claimed that he always said that the race riot was evil. But he still is firmly in the camp of not wanting to bring up skin color when talking about it.Critical race theory is the the study of how laws, social, and political movements are impacted by race and ethnic concepts in our society. It also delves into ways it is baked into our our systems, like our Justice systems, employment and many others. But it has become a buzzword in the right's rhetoric because they want something that gets people up in arms. So they say that critical race theory is teaching white people to be ashamed of being white and that black people are better. The attack on anything race-related has brought the troll known as Marjorie Taylor Green from under her bridge. She defines critical race theory as something that teaches white children to hate themselves and to feel guilty while lifting black children up.A lot of people hold the view they just don't want to see things that make them uncomfortable, they rail against CRT without even understanding what it is. They want to change the history of the USA, to hide the truth, to instead say things that really happened didn't happen. How exactly are we to teach about one group killing others over race without discussing race Superintendent Ryan Walters?

We're proud to be doing our rock and roll duty with this week's show. Mike has a chance to chat with the one and only Kim Mitchell - songwriter, killer guitar player, radio host, and a whole lot more. His latest release is 2007's Ain't Life Amazing (it is), though he's out on the road right now for a string of dates and you can hear him regularly on Q107. One particularly funny anecdote involves the ever-talked-about Bob Dylan. Tune in for that. Then, in the return of CM Academy, we'll speak with Aaron Jensen, the artistic director behind the third annual edition of Sing! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival. Acts like The Nylons, The Kinsey Sicks, Alan Frew of Glass Tiger, Dan Hill, and many others are part of the programming, which includes not only a capella performances, but also daily workshops on vocal technique, the busienss of music, and more.
