“We had Japanese faces but American hearts.”  So says our special guest Yoshio Nakamura, a Japanese-American born in California. Yoshio experienced first-hand the upheaval of World War II when Japanese-Americans were classified as enemy aliens.  He endured internment at Tulare Racetrack and Gila River Camp, facing humiliation and loss of freedom. Despite the injustice, he demonstrated loyalty to the U.S. by joining the Army, serving in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Nakamura participated in key battles in Europe, contributing to the unit's status as the most decorated in U.S. military history.  After the war, he pursued education and became an art teacher. Despite hardships, Nakamura maintains a positive outlook on life. Also joining us is Dr. Mitchell T. Maki is the President and CEO of the Go For Broke National Education Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy and lessons of the Nisei (a person born in the US whose parents were immigrants from Japan) World War II veterans.  The mission of GO FOR BROKE is to educate and inspire character and equality through the virtue and valor of our World War II American veterans of Japanese ancestry. Dr. Maki is also the lead author of the award-winning book, Achieving the Impossible Dream: How Japanese Americans Obtained Redress, a detailed case study of the 1988 Civil Liberties Act.  Nearly fifty years after being incarcerated by their own government, Japanese American concentration camp survivors succeeded in obtaining redress for the personal humiliation, family dislocation, and economic ruin caused by their ordeal.  An inspiring story of wrongs made right as well as a practical guide to getting legislation through Congress, Achieving the Impossible Dream documents the redress movement from its earliest roots during World War II, the formal introduction of the idea in the 1970s, the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians, the judicial battles during the 1980s, and the lobbying of the legislative and executive branches in the 1980s and 1990s.  In 2000, the book received the Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award which is given to books addressing bigotry and human rights in North America. Dr. Maki has held the positions of acting Provost and Vice president of Academic Affairs, Vice Provost of Student Academic Success, dean of the Colleges of Professional Studies and Health and Human Services (CSUDH), acting dean of the College of Health and Human Services at CSU Los Angeles and assistant professor in the Department of Social Welfare at UCLA.  As acting Provost, Dr. Maki provided academic and strategic leadership for CSUDH's five academic colleges which served over fifteen thousand students. Sonja Ulrich is a true survivor. Born in Germany, raised by a single mother in high society and at times move from town to town. Her mother joined the Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and become a Rajneeshee. Ulrich lived alone in Germany from ages 12 to 13, then at different European satellite communes for the next four years, all the while separated from her mother. When she turned 17, she was finally old enough for her chance to join Rajneeshpuram in Oregon. Despite swirling rumors of criminal activity and FBI infiltration of the site, Ulrich still wanted to go. As she arrived it was all falling apart and she found her self alone in the US. Ulrich enrolled at CSUDH in the early 2000s as a human services major, but then discovered her love of anthropology—the study of humans, and why they do what they do. Sonja graduated from CSUDH in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in cultural anthropology and minor in bellydance history, then went on to earn her master's degree in anthropology from CSU Long Beach. She began teaching as an adjunct professor at CSUDH in 2015, and over the course of her academic career, has found “amazing healing” through her discipline. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matt-brown57/support

Dr. Thomas A. Parham, president of California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), shares what he believes are the fundamental ingredients for success for Black faculty and students in the 114th episode of In The Margins.   In this episode, Diverse host David Pluviose welcomes Parham, who speaks to his own journey to university president and the implicit bias he has encountered in higher education.   Be sure not to miss this conversation on what Parham calls the stones of stagnation and rocks of resignation that keep higher education from being the diverse, inclusive, and socially minded institutions they say they want to be, and hear how he plans to close the gap between the aspirational and the actual.   KEY POINTS: - Parham's journey to CSU, Dominguez Hills - Fundamental lessons for Black faculty success - The importance of defining and re-framing the narrative - Mental health when it comes to Black students - The impact of the pandemic on diverse students - Current and future initiatives to promote Black excellence at CSUDH   QUOTABLES: “Never seek validation from your oppressor. So, the problem was never that people have a negative opinion about Black folk or women or LGBT, or whatever it is. The problem is you give a darn about what they think in the first place.” “Recognize that this individual, who I consider to be a seed of divinely inspired possibility, if we can nurture that individual in its proper context, they'll grow into the fullest expression of all they're supposed to become. So, our campuses, my campus, is a soil.” “Crisis does three things. It reveals character. It exposes weakness. But it also creates opportunity.”   GUEST RESOURCES: Dr. Thomas A. She samples her movement from yoga, dance, martial arts and exercise modalities like Barre and Pilates. Her formal education includes a BA in English from UCLA and a certification for Chemical Dependency Counseling from CSUDH. Currently based in Orlando, Tracy began her movement career in Los Angeles where she grew up. After moving to San Diego, she launched her own online business in order to make movement classes more accessible than traditional studio classes. Her goal is to help people unapologetically be themselves, through trauma-informed, inclusive and self-affirming movement. Teaching has led her to working with special populations including people in inpatient and outpatient chemical dependency centers and halfway homes. She has taught surf/snowboard/yoga retreats for women with cancer with the nonprofit B4BC across the US. Suicide and mental health issues have directly and indirectly been a part of my life. Between age 12-17 I was hospitalized for suicide attempts and institutionalized for drug use and eating disorders. I got "clean/sober" when I was 17 and am approaching 15 years without in December. I have worked with special pop. with movement and have created movement classes for people that are working through trauma and substance issues without partiality to 12-step programs. Episode 9 of the DEUCE Racing Podcast, with our very own Matt Fitzpatrick, is here! Matt, who received an MA in Curriculum & Instruction at CSUDH in May 2020, currently teaches high school science (Health, Physiology, and Biology), and is the co-lead within the Health Careers Academy, as well as advisor for the newly created Gay-Straight Alliance. Last year he supported students in their efforts to run the LA Marathon! Part of what makes Matt's current role and impact as an educator so compelling is his diverse background -- in fields completely separate from teaching! As he transitions into a profession in LA, a city he is proud to have grown up in, Matt is eager to meet and learn from others who are cultivating an inquiry-based, social justice centered, culturally-responsive, tech-supported, and inclusive learning environment. He aims to “queer” science education, create an environment where students find affirmation in who they are, and know that despite feeling uncertain or certain about the future… that love, curiosity, and the ability to adapt can help each of us live as our most authentic self. As always, we invite you to tune in, like, subscribe, and share with all your family & friends! BONUS: for those of you interested in listening to Matt's famous Spotify Playlists... Drugs used to treat diseases like cancer can be either synthetic in origin, semi-synthetic derivatives of natural products, or unmodified natural products. Dr Patrick Still and his team at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), conduct research to identify and biologically screen anti-cancer compounds derived specifically from plant materials. Studies involving structure elucidation and biological testing of compounds from plants have provided undergraduate research experiences for students across chemical and biological sciences majors on the CSUDH campus.

This episode is all about celebration! Dr. Renee and Dr. Cristina have a lot to celebrate, so join them in shining light on jaw-dropping achievements, exciting news, and new opportunities for growth and connection. Dr. Renee and Dr. Cristina kick off this episode by celebrating the sold out Sacred Writing Course and all that it has created for them and their community. In creating the spaces they need for themselves, they've held space for so many amazing women to connect to the sacredness of writing, express their creativity, feel empowered, and heal. If you're interested in enrolling in the Sacred Writing Course, you can join the waitlist and hold your spot for the Fall session by sending an email to: lasdoctorasonline@gmail.com Something else Dr. Renee and Dr. Cristina are celebrating is their magazine, Saint Lunita! With all the support and investment they've received, they feel like they have created an incredible community hub with all types of powerful contributions, including art, essays, book reviews, and ancestral messages. This is truly a childhood dream come true! Visit the magazine here: www.saintlunita.com Calling all CPAs, tax preparers, and lawyers! As Las Doctoras grows and expands, they're looking for more people to join their team. If you'd like to offer your services, shoot them an email!Dr. Cristina received the 2021 Catherine H. Jacobs Outstanding Faculty Lecturer Award at CSUDH! We're hoping she uses the prize money to treat herself to something nice…Dr. Renee reads and reflects upon the incredible review she received from the Women & Gender Studies department at Cal State. The work she does is who she is and it's making an international impact. “To be seen by our departments, by our universities, for the work that we do… it's just beyond,” she says.Dr. Renee bought a house!! This is also a childhood dream come true and it means so much to her. Even though it was an emotional rollercoaster, she says, “The reason I was able to do it was because I didn't have to pay my loan for a whole year.” That's one result of the pandemic that's worth celebration! Dr. Cristina's son will be going to a forest school! This is a major mom win for her, even though not everyone is super supportive of it…With all of these milestones being reached, what has come up for them is that it's not always easy for family and friends to be 100% supportive of their decisions and achievements. “It's kind of coming back to what we were talking about before, like why we weren't always sharing our podcasts. There's this sense of legitimacy, like, “What is legitimate success?”… I think we are very much creating our own idea and version of success.”If we operate from a scarcity mindset or a mindset of being unsafe, it can be difficult to celebrate even the biggest wins in life, especially other people's wins. If we can celebrate ourselves and each other, we can lift each other up and feel safety and joy more often. Don't wait for the other shoe to drop. Shine light on the false narratives and stories you're telling yourself that aren't serving you so that you can move beyond them. You deserve to see your childhood dreams come true just because you exist. You have a right to celebration. You have a right to feel successful. Other people's ideas of success and celebration may be different than yours, but if you want to celebrate, go ahead and celebrate! Have the audacity to pursue your dreams, break the systems, change the f*cking world, and relish in it.“For us, it is unpacking a lot of this stuff so that we can sit in the celebration and be present with it.”What do you want to celebrate today?Connect with Las Doctoras:Visit their website: www.lasdoctoras.net Follow them on Instagram: www.instagram.com/las.doctoras
