Sudarshan and Shweta are key leadership figures in Bal Raksha Bharat (also known as Save the Children India). Sudarshan is CEO and Shweta is Head of Governance & Organisation Development.     In this podcast, they generously share their thoughts and experiences. Their approach is inspiring and enlightening, and it aligns closely to the Eco-Leadership Institute approach. They focus on shifting power from the centre to the edges. Their humanitarian work aims to create capacity, but not only through raising funds from external resources. They see the recipients of the aid they provide as key to creating capacity, as the children and citizens they support are full of potential that they aim to resource. They also look for long term solutions and focus on moving away from crisis reactions,  and reliance on external funding, to build sustainable capacity through civic and state collaboration. They discuss some of their pioneering approaches to humanitarian aid and development and what is striking is the emphasis on deep caring and a holistic approach. Sudarshan and Shweta have to constantly adapt to the fast changing landscape. Key to their work is what we call LEDGE approaches - leadership from the edge, and they focus on bringing people from the edge to make their contribution heard and relevant. Whilst they face many challenges, they see their ecosystems are filled with resources. At the heart of their work is hope, fuelled by a collaborative and generous mindset.    Sudarshan is a strong advocate of developing a learning culture in the workplace. He shares insights from Bal Raksha Bharat's most recent annual ‘Knowledge & Learning Exchange Week' which focussed on ‘failing intelligently'; to remove any blame culture and learn from both the successful and unsuccessful initiatives. India is a place of diversity and challenges for them, but from this podcast you can feel the power of their hope and the energy they have to create a good society. Bios: Sudarshan Suchi is the Chief Executive Officer of Bal Raksha Bharat (also known as Save the Children India). As a staunch believer in participatory processes, Sudarshan believes in co-creation and inclusion of all voices within design and action. Passionate about building self-reliance and creating livelihood opportunities, he has himself dabbled in creating and promoting eco-friendly farming practices. Although he graduated in Philosophy, Law and completed Masters in Participation Power and Social Change, Sudarshan admits that most of his education happened outside the classroom. Over the past three decades, he has held leadership positions with eminent organisations like Reliance Foundation, Reliance Life Sciences, and National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). He has also taught at Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA) and is part of Academic Council of IIHMR's Rural Management Program. As CEO of BRB, Sudarshan believes in creating a living organisation that is built on its people and their ability to be vulnerable, embrace shortfalls productively and aim towards improvement. His vision is to build and grow the movement for child rights in India, wherein children have a voice and agency, and participate as active citizens of the country. Shweta Malhotra is a seasoned professional with 17 years of dedicated service at Bal Raksha, Bharat (Save the Children India), currently serving as the Head of Governance & Organisation Development. In this role, she adeptly oversees the Board, CEO's office, and plays a pivotal role in enhancing the organization's adaptability in an ever-changing dynamic environment. A true advocate for fostering a human-centric culture, Shweta thrives on meaningful connections with people. Her professional narrative includes a fascinating chapter as a freelance fashion designer, where she successfully ran her own label. Beyond her professional pursuits, she finds joy in travelling with her family and relishes the simple pleasures of snuggling up with a good book and a cup of coffee.

Season 5, episode 6: Blue helmets have become one of the most visible signs of the UN in the world. These peacekeepers are sent where often nobody else wants to go and asked to accomplish what nobody else often will. After 70 years of service, UN peacekeeping has seen its successes and its well-publicized failures. So in this episode, we took a more thematic approach to multilateralism to look at the role that peacekeeping plays. When did it begin and why? How has it evolved over the years and how effective has it been? How might it change still to meet today's challenges? We discussed these questions and more with peacekeeping expert and Georgetown colleague, Dr. Lise Howard. Lise Morjé Howard is Professor of Government and Foreign Service at Georgetown University and President of the Academic Council on the United Nations System. Her research and teaching interests span the fields of international relations, comparative politics, and conflict resolution. It won the 2021 book award from the International Security Studies Section of the International Studies Association.  Dr. Howard earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from UC, Berkeley, and her A.B. in Soviet Studies from Barnard College, Columbia University. In this episode I speak with Flagg Taylor about the life and writing of Vaclav Benda, and his idea of the parallel polis, decentralization, and creating space in society for culture, the family, charity, education, and human flourishing. Though he was writing under communist regimes, Benda's writings are very relevant today in light democratic pressures to conformity, de-platforming, and especially as a new ontology of the person is being written into law — and dignity is used as weapon against religious and cultural liberty. Benda's idea of the parallel polis was not a siege mentality, nor so much a reform existing structures that had ossified or were corrupted, but a call to build new, innovative, and better structures and social institutions that would activate people's participation in civil, cultural, and commercial life, and give people a sense of purpose and agency. Examples today include decentralized technologies or classical education - which is not running away, but creating better alternatives to mediocre state run schools. We discuss Benda's ideas in the context of Czech communism and also in contemporary America, especially the overlap with Alexis de Tocqueville's warnings about individualism, centralization, and soft-despotism. We examine his engagement with various thinkers including Roger Scruton and J.R.R. Tolkien, and talk about contemporary movements towards decentralization including The Network State by Balaji Srinivasan and its relation to the idea of a parallel polis. We discuss the need for social and commercial alternatives built on a rich understanding of the human person and the family including healthcare, mutual aid societies, banking, payment, insurance and more. Benda's idea of the parallel polis demonstrates that the solution to totalitarianism and centralization is not more centralization or another totalitarianism, but de-centralization and humanization. We discuss a number of Benda essays including: The Parallel Polis, The Meaning Context Legacy of the Parallel Polis, The Family and Totalitarianism, A Critique of the Idea of a Christian State, and his personal reflections that illustrate the constant social pressure of living under communist totalitarianism. Themes and Topics include Albert Hirshman: Exit, Voice, and Loyalty Peter Berger on Plausibility Structures Vaclav Havel: Power of the Powerless Greengrocers of the World Unite! Aristotle's Moral and Intellectual Virtues Vaclav Havel Living in Truth Benda focus on resisting the lies of totalitarianism by inhabiting a social spaces and plausibility structures that make living in truth possible. The latter is a trench whose elimination depends strictly on a calculated move by the state power to destroy it.  Given the time and means available only a certain number of trenches can be eliminated. If, at the same time, the parallel polis is able to produce more such trenches than it loses ,a situation arises that is morally dangerous for the regime; it is a blow at the very heart of its power — that is, the possibility of intervening anywhere without limitation.  The mission of the parallel polis is to constantly conquer new territory to make its parallelness constantly more substantial and more present. Benda p. 233 From “The Family and Totalitarianism” I consider marriage and the family to be so essential that I am unwilling to accept the regular clichés about liberation from these obligations. So, in the Christian version as we know it, which for centuries dominated the western world, the family was, as well as many other good things, a visible embodiment of the three most fundamental gifts or dignity is that a person could receive… Benda lists three gifts: “Fruitful fellowship of love in which we are bound together with our neighbor without pardon by virtue simply of our closeness; not on the basis of merit rights and entitlements, but by virtue of mutual need and its affectionate reciprocation” “Freedom and the ability to make permanent, eternal decisions … and acts of fidelity…that stand in radical defiance of our finitude” “Dignity and the unique role of the individual

Find out more on our website: https://bit.ly/35opClo Z/Yen and the China Development Institute (CDI) host a regular series of open discussions on technology and financial futures. This event is going to explore how to make the global energy system more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient by looking to develop a Renewable Energy Internet with the right financial interconnectors. Renewable Energy Internet thinking has emerged strongly from central Asia, where landlocked countries such as Kazakhstan want to connect their renewable generation to an energy market largely based on shipborne fossil fuels. While many thinkers see the future as 'electric', much of this has been based on national grids. Meanwhile, heavy industry, aviation, and shipping need to consider both hydrogen and ammonia to become more sustainable, as 'new nuclear' such as small modular reactors also gain the attention of forward thinkers. Finance and financial centres have a significant role to play in providing smooth, liquid, and efficient markets allocating money, resources, and energy. However, the existing international energy trading market is inefficient, largely paper-based, and unable to fulfil the types of services a Renewable Energy Internet requires. This webinar will explore what can be done jointly by financial centres to provide better energy markets from simplification of contracting, standardisation of documentation, creation of central clearing & counterparty services, or combining foreign exchange and energy trading contracts. Speakers: Professor Alexander Van de Putte PhD FCG CDir FIoD is Chief Strategy Officer, Chairman of Corporate Governance & Stewardship, and Chairman of the Academic Council of the Astana International Financial Centre. He is also the Chairman of the Board of the AIFC Bureau for Continuing Professional Development (BCPD) and an independent director of the AIFC Authority and of Eurasian National University. At IE Business School, one of Europe's top business schools, he is Professor of Strategy and Strategic Foresight. In December 2020, he was awarded with the high state award - the order of Dostyk of Degree II by decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Previously, Professor Van de Putte was a Member of the Board of the National Investment Corporation of the National Bank of Kazakhstan, a Managing Director with the Kazakhstan Development Bank, Principal Advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Senior Director and Head of Global Practices with the World Economic Forum. At Shell, Alexander was the Senior Strategy and Portfolio Advisor to the Chairman and the Committee of Managing Directors. Prior to Shell, Alexander was Executive Director and co-leader of the shareholder value practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers. At McKinsey, Alexander was a core team member of the European Corporate Finance and Strategy Practice. Zhuang Liu is the General Manager of Energy China Group International Engineering Corporation, who used to undertake responsibilities including as Deputy Director of Energy China Group Northwest Power Grid Design Institute, Director of Energy China Group International Department, etc. Under the current many uncertainties of the industries in the world, Mr Liu is dedicated to the promotion of international cooperation via innovation of business channels and developmental methods, facilitated the international business growth of Energy China which would other wise deemed as unachievable facing the various global difficulties and challenges.

This episode is the Keynote Address from the 2021 Charleston Library Conference, titled "How to Think Like a Civilization" Presented by Paul Saffo, Consulting Associate Professor, Stanford University, and moderated by Michael Keller, Vice Provost, Academic Council, Stanford University Library. Paul says we live in a moment when the institutions most needed to tackle our global problems are dissolving into uncertainty. That uncertainty tempts us into focusing on what is lost - but we know better. The proper task is to consider how to shape what will emerge in its place.  Like it or not, we are recreating ourselves into a new planetary civilization. With luck - and a bit of help from librarians - we might just get it right. Video of the presentation available at https: https://youtu.be/iPin-yntMAY?t=0

Save Meduza!https://support.meduza.io/enIn mid-January, administrators at Moscow's Higher School of Economics (HSE, perhaps the best university in Russia, shared a proposal to impose greater restrictions on political activism within the university that would have prohibited individuals affiliated with HSE from mentioning this connection when discussing political issues or taking part in what school officials described as “socially divisive” activities. The university also announced that HSE is stripping all student media groups of their official status, apparently in response to the actions of a single student outlet called Doxa. About a week later, on January 24, HSE's Academic Council held a 10-hour meeting. Among many issues, the council discussed the proposed amendments to the school's internal rules, ultimately watering down many of the most draconian suggestions. To find out more about this situation and understand how it compares to political freedoms on U.S. campuses, “The Naked Pravda” spoke to a handful of scholars in Russia and America. In this episode: (1:53) Greg Yudin, a senior research fellow and associate professor of sociology at the Higher School of Economics, says HSE's administration listened to students and reached a reasonable compromise. (4:28) Armen Aramyan, an editor at Doxa and a graduate student at the Higher School of Economics, says the amended rules adopted by HSE's Academic Council are still too vague and restrictive. (7:42) Andrey Lavrov, HSE's public relations director, addresses the compromise reached between the administration and disgruntled students. (22:15) Kris Olds and Mark Johnson, two scholars at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, describe restrictions on political activism on U.S. college campuses. “The Naked Pravda” comes out on Fridays.
