E224- Interview With Autumn Clifford - She's An Asset . Mindset & Emotional Resiliency Training For the Female First Responder. This week we had Autumn join us on the podcast. Autumn is a Law Enforcement Officer on the East Coast who has transitioned to helping empower female first responders after battling her own physical and mental trauma. Listen in to our conversation and be sure to give her a follow on all her social media platforms. WHO WE ARE As a group of Rural Volunteer Firefighters, our Fire Department has built our firefighter training from both old and new tactics in the fire service and adapted them to fit the realities of equipment, manpower, and costs around what our community requires. WHAT WE DO We create video, audio and written word content to share these training and tactics methods with our Brothers and Sisters in our extended fire families, and to showcase to those that may be interested in becoming firefighters the fun you can have and the amazing skills and abilities you get to learn, whilst keeping the lives of the people around you safe! WHY WE SHARE Firefighters are problem solvers whose role requires them to be on their best day whilst others are having their worst day, and while we do not claim to be perfect we are willing to put our lives on the line to try. It's during the trying that we continue to develop the mindset, tactics, and training that allow us to be effective, safe and successful where it's needed the most, and by sharing our experiences we hope that it may help other Fire Departments in creating what works for them to help bring everyone home safe. COVID-19 impacted mental health in fundamental ways, forcing isolation and insecurity on individuals, families, and communities. Dr. Reginald Richardson explores ways we can rebuild resilience as we transition from pandemic to endemic, with particular emphasis on social support. Dr. Richardson also discusses how isolation has had a particularly damaging influence on alcohol and drug addiction rates and overdoses, with limited access to emergency mental health services contributing to poor outcomes. Episode host Dr. Yashika Watkins and Dr. Richardson also unpack some of the features of the stages of behavioral change, noting commonalities between the processes of increasing physical activity and reducing alcohol and food consumption, and how these changes can be facilitated through social contact in a group setting, as demonstrated by the Movement is Life program Operation Change. Host Tom Stamatakis is passionate about Mental Health Wellness in Policing, and he was super thankful to interview Dr. Tim Black, Counselling Psychologist and Associate Professor at the University of Victoria. Some of Dr. Black's focus is on First Responder Trauma and he recently provided instruction to several VCPU members in Trauma and Resiliency Training (TRT). Dr. Black's program is a partnership with Wounded Warriors Canada. https://woundedwarriors.ca/our-programs/trauma-resiliency-training-trt/Tim wants First Responders to understand what Trauma is, what PTSD is, how you get diagnosed and lastly how your employer/workplace treats people suffering from Trauma. His goal of educating employers and staff to better know what to look for and how to respond to maximize the treatment response. Stigmatization is always a huge barrier and the teaching model of Peer to Peer has proven effective to getting employees to take steps to get better rather than hiding their trauma. What is Trauma? Exposed to an event where there is actual or threatened death, actual or threatened serious violence or actual or threatened sexual violence. “So much of policing is daily exposure to traumatic events” – Dr. Tim Black.https://www.linkedin.com/in/tim-black-32208310/https://www.facebook.com/WoundedWarriorsCanadaSound editing done by Todd Mason.More about the Victoria City Police Union (VCPU): - Tweet us at https://twitter.com/VicPD_Union - Follow us on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/vicpd_union/ - Find us on FaceBook at https://www.facebook.com/truebluevictoria/ - Visit our website for information at https://truebluevic.ca/ - Email us at media@vcpu.ca for any media inquiries or requests to be on the True Blue Podcast

“Are you stressed?” This question doesn't usually elicit the kind of answer that we want from patients, and yet it's the way we often screen for stress in a health appointment. When we ask patients if they are stressed they immediately compare their stress to others, compare their current stress to past stress, or compare their perceived stress against how they “feel like they should feel” about their life. None of this is helpful. When I asked my colleague and teammate Dr. Dominika Zarzenzny to join us on the podcast I had one goal in mind. I wanted you to deeply understand how your past stress influences your current health. Six years into clinical practice, Dr. Dominika stumbled on landmark research known as the ACE study that changed the trajectory of her work with patients. From that point on, she decided to dedicate her practice to understanding how early life events can dys-regulate one's nervous system, and how a dys-regulated nervous system in turn influences health outcomes. Dr. Dominika furthered her studies by training with various psychologists and experts in the field of psychological trauma. She incorporates the principles of neuroscience, attachment theory, mindfulness and polyvagal theory in her inquiry process and counselling with patients. She works with our patients at Clarity Health who recognize the impact of stress, experiences they have never recovered from and past hardship can have on your current health journey, with many of our patients feeling relief and direction after a single 1 hour session. The question of “are you stressed” is just the tip of the iceberg. We all have stress, past experiences, relationships and circumstances that have shaped how our nervous system sees the world. If you are a human, this episode is for you.

In week 1, I focus on what buffering is and why we do it and give you a nice foundation of understanding on this topic. In week 2, you will learn about what the spectrum of buffers is, how to know what the net negative result of each buffer is, and how understanding all of this affects our lives. In week 3, I teach you about what an urge is and how to manage them. In week 4, about our relationship with discomfort and how that is currently affecting our life. Enjoy!

What does it mean to have a team that is accountable, hardworking, and responsible? Employees no longer feel compelled to serve companies that do not serve them. This makes understanding employee retention key to attracting and retaining those top performers. It's time for school leaders to start to create an environment that fosters and builds a team of excellence. Today's podcast episode is a very unique conversation. I talk about the two mindset shifts to help you increase retention in your center, starting with understanding the problem that you're trying to solve. Because when we understand what is the problem that we're trying to solve, it is a lot easier for us to be able to find the right solution. In a nutshell, I speak about: The global evolution of hiring in the early childhood education space. The core skills leaders need to create sustainability, profit and legacy. The two strategies to start understanding how to flip the narrative around the hiring crisis. I hope that the content, strategy and perspective shared in the episode will be very valuable to you in your continued pursuit of excellence for your center. Today's episode is part of a special live streaming that we do once a month on our Facebook page. In today's conversation, we talk about a very thought-provoking question that Lori Buxton of AELL, had in mind. And her question was, "Do you feel more satisfied when your program or your business succeeds because of you, or without you?" By the end of the episode, you will get a better understanding of stories that we create for ourselves, the context around the type of story that we want, the leader that we want to be and the hero that we are in our lives. Many of the answers that we talked about today are excellent predictors of the culture that you're building and the leadership health of your company. Many school leaders feel time-pressured, tethered to their smartphones so they can stay on top of work and home responsibilities. It can be tough to step off the daily merry-go-round, put your phones, laptops, and to-do lists aside, and find decent chunks of quiet time to reflect on your life. In fact, we may not even be sure how. Today's episode is number 50 for the Schools of Excellence Podcast! With this milestone, it's also an invitation to pause. An invitation to tune into your body and mind and what you need. Consider this a sign that it's high time you intentionally took a break from your daily hustle and just rested. Pause your mind from the productive work mode and get into play mode. If you have no idea of how to do this, tune in! If you rely solely on referrals to fuel your school, you're making one of the most common mistakes a school leader can make. This puts the fate of your school entirely into the hands of your school's families. They determine when (or if) you get your next family. Today, I'm excited to share with you my interview with Mike Michalowicz. Instead of living in the constant cycle of feast or famine, Mike Michalowicz shares a way to keep the “marketing machine” running 24/7 to help you attract the best possible families. Last week his newest book, Get Different, was released. Are you on the verge of falling apart and wondering whether this is what resilience for school leaders looks like? Having an amazing school is not a result of having amazing systems or infrastructure. While those are important and critical for success, the leaders who truly excel are those that have built strong, confident, and resilient toolkits. The ones that have fully understood their stress cycles and helped their team do the same. In today's episode, I speak about building your confidence and resilience toolkit. This toolkit is mainly built by becoming self-aware and taking the necessary steps towards improving yourself. On this week's podcast I'm joined by U.S-based Coach Frank Duffy to discuss his approach to Mobility Training. Frank is a Strength & Conditioning Coach at Cressey Sport Performance, Co-Founder of Par Four Performance, a FRC and Kinstretch Coach and is someone who puts out a tonne of free mobility content through his Instagram. In this episode Frank discusses: - Why he is such a big advocate for FRC and Kinstretch Training, what both are and how their approach is different to the typical static or dynamic stretches. - His key principles when it comes to mobility and movement training - The common issues he typically sees with Gen' Pop' clients and his key areas of focus to address when working with clients. - Where people should start with mobility training, how he builds mobility work into a client's Training program and why performing some mobility work outside of sessions can be key to maximising results. - His incredible work over the past 14 months with a client who has Multiple Sclerosis. Frank explains the focus and approach he takes with her, the challenges they've faced over the past year and how the experience of training her has changed how he views movement. To finish Frank also provides some tips on how those with Hyper-mobility, or laxity as Frank prefers to call it, can utilise some of the FRC approaches to help manage their condition better.
