This story was written by Megan Westberg for the January-February 2025 issue of Strings magazine and is read by the author...Violinist Sarah Neufeld and cellist Rebecca Foon first met as teenagers at an Ani DiFranco concert. This seems a good place to start, as any discussion of their new album, First Sounds (Envision Records)—on which Neufeld and Foon combine talents with those of multi-instrumentalist Richard Reed Parry—really has to start in the late '90s, when this trio initially came together. The relationships, you see, came first in the origin story of this project and are inextricably central to it. Support the show

Richard Reed Parry is perhaps best known as the really tall, really redheaded guy playing half a dozen instruments in the Grammy-winning band Arcade Fire. But he's also a founder of the instrumental group Bell Orchestre, and a composer of contemporary classical music. In 2018, he visited the studio with a new project called Quiet River of Dust, and it was at least partly inspired by the psychedelic folk/rock scene in Britain in the late 1960's. He and Quiet River of Dust perform some of the musical meditations, in-studio. (From the Archives.) Set list: 1. Finally Home 2. Song of Wood 3. I Was in the World (Was the World In Me?)
One of the original members of the indie band Arcade Fire, Richard Reed Parry (THE IRON CLAW, EILEEN) discusses his jump into film scoring, the importance of finding “mojo” and “vibe,” and how the wrestling biopic The Iron Claw nearly stumped him musically — until he unlocked the rich, layered sound that carries the film. How Spike Jonze's film “Her” prepared him for the next stage in his career, and why he believes it's important to be as musically dynamic with other musicians as possible.

Richard Reed Parry is the featured guest on this Score to Screen podcast. The Nest composer explains how his intuitive response to watching the entirety of the film without music inspired how he devised the acoustic score. The Nest follows Rory (Jude Law), an ambitious entrepreneur and former commodities broker, who persuades his American wife, Allison (Carrie Coon), and their children to leave the comforts of suburban America and return to his native England during the 1980s. Sensing opportunity, Rory rejoins his former firm and leases a centuries-old country manor, with grounds for Allison's horses and plans to build a stable. Soon the promise of a lucrative new beginning starts to unravel, the couple have to face the unwelcome truths lying beneath the surface of their marriage. Richard Reed Parry is the musical polymath at the heart of the endlessly inventive art rock band Arcade Fire, but his work and story reach far beyond. As well as navigating Arcade Fire's meteoric rollercoaster ride around most of the globe over the past fifteen years, he also released his debut album as composer for Music For Heart and Breath in 2014, formed and toured in the acclaimed contemporary instrumental ensemble Bell Orchestre with Arcade Fire violinist Sarah Neufeld, formed the sonic folk ensemble Quiet River of Dust, and collaborated and performed endlessly with artists from across a dazzling musical/artistic spectrum including David Bowie, David Byrne, the New York Philharmonic, Neil Young, and more. He has won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year, multiple Juno Awards for both Arcade Fire and Bell Orchestre, The Polaris Prize, Brit Awards, and Socan Awards among others. The Nest, which marks filmmaker Sean Durkin's second feature film, his first since 2011's Martha Marcy May Marlene, sees him operating in the same sophisticated, glitteringly fragile mode as his debut. Charting the deterioration of a family in the 1980s after their fast-talking patriarch (a rivetingly brittle Jude Law) moves them to London to chase opportunity, The Nest soaks its characters -- particularly Carrie Coon as Law's anxious, suffocated wife -- in the ominous atmosphere of the cavernous Surrey estate Law buys for them to live in. It's far too big for the family of four, and its looming spaces threaten to swallow them whole. For Arcade Fire's Richard Reed Parry, it's his first feature film score to date. But he and Durkin collaborate on an airy, lounge-y sound that fills the corners of that huge, empty house and the status-saving parties our characters soak themselves in. Double bass collides with dissonant strings, crashing piano chords, and cymbals to create a sound that's not unlike the feeling of losing yourself in a fancy party you realize far too late you weren't invited to. For the podcast, The Spool sits down with both Durkin and Parry to chronicle the beginning of their collaboration, finding the scratchy little nooks and crannies of The Nest's world, and trying to encapsulate the anxieties of its central characters through music. (Plus, you'll hear a snippet from the film's score.)
On the latest episode of the Talkhouse Podcast, three of the creative talents behind the new movie The Nest – writer-director Sean Durkin, actor Jude Law and composer Richard Reed Parry – sit down for a deep-dive conversation about their work together and their respective artistic processes. Over the course of their talk, the trio discuss how their deeply collaborative creative approaches aligned in creating a collective vision for The Nest, how Sean and Richard met and became friends and collaborators, how Richard approached writing music for The Nest (and how Sean was able to “find” the film through the music), the way Jude and Sean together sketched a backstory for Jude’s protagonist Rory, the ways in which they each “submitted to the moment” while making the movie, and much more. If you want EVERYTHING NOW, then look no further than this week's Seven Song Setlist podcast, on which Ali and Dan discuss undisputed headliners, the Arcade Fire. Formed in Canada in 2000, Arcade Fire are husband and wife Win Butler and Regine Cassagne, Win’s younger brother William, Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara. They released their critically acclaimed debut album Funeral in 2004, after a year of tragedy and the death of various family members rocked the band. The album really sets the tone for what followed; 2008’s Neon Bible, 2010’s The Suburbs, 2013’s Reflektor and latest release Everything Now wrestle with similar themes of the ambiguous ‘neighbourhood’, the loss of childhood innocence, the pace of 21st century life and death. Don’t let that put you off though, they’re an incredible live band and have headlined every festival going, including Glastonbury in 2014 and Lollapalooza in 2017.Help us spread the word...follow us on social media and tell your friends about the Seven Song Setlist podcast.Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/7songsetlist/Twitter - https://twitter.com/7songsetlistLike the podcast? Haitian-American composer Nathalie Joachim is the co-artistic director and flutist of the Grammy-winning contemporary chamber ensemble Eighth Blackbird, and one half of the art-pop duo, Flutronix. She's worked with Bryce Dessner, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Richard Reed Parry, Miguel Zenón, and the International Contemporary Ensemble as well. Her latest, with Chicago-based string ensemble Spektral Quartet, is "Fanm d’Ayiti" (Women of Haiti), a joyous and magic-infused work celebrating Haitian song, and how women are "the driving force of life, of politics, and social change." (Joachim, in an interview with I Care If You Listen.) Joachim and the quartet play some of "Fanm d’Ayiti," in-studio. - Caryn Havlik Watch the session here:

Caroline is a Quaker, author, poet, celebrator and visual artist. Educated in the USA, she volunteered and married an Englishman in South India, taught in England, and emigrated to Canada in 1973, where Evalyn Parry and Richard Reed Parry, both multi-talented artists themselves, were born. A freelance performer since young adulthood, Caroline emerged from the mid-life crisis of sudden widowhood into new roles, and was the Interim Director of Religious Education [Lifespan] at Ottawa First from 2002-05; she also held that role at the First UU Church of Columbus, Ohio, from 2006-08. This is the seventh and final year she has served the Unitarian Church of Montreal as part-time DRE. In 2013 she published her spiritual memoir, The Heron Spirals: A Commonplace Book; as well as giving the annual keynote lecture at Canadian Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers). She will draw on both of these for her sermon. Caroline loves her Britannia home and looks forward to not-just-the-summers in Ottawa once again!
