When applying pesticides, David uses IPM (integrated pest management) techniques, including inspection, monitoring, and exclusion, to develop a safe and nontoxic approach to pest management. Before founding Mayday Pest Management, he was an Internet Researcher at Lionbridge. In this episode… Although unpleasant, pest control is a vital component of property management, so owners must understand best practices for identification, extermination, and pricing. What should you know about pest management services, and how can you select an option that fits your needs? As a property owner, it's crucial to be aware of various pests and their habitats so you can take preventative measures and determine an ideal course of action for elimination. According to integrative pest management applicator David Yuen, roaches occupy underneath and behind appliances and inside cabinets. These pests require using vacuums and non-repellent chemicals to mitigate reoccurrences. Bed bugs have developed a resistance to insecticides and are attracted to dark colors, necessitating spot treatments with precise chemicals. When evaluating pest control options, privately owned and operated companies like Mayday Pest Management offer fair pricing based on infestation types and severity and utilize industry-grade, safe, and effective chemicals to ensure comprehensive maintenance. Mat Zalk hosts David Yuen, Owner and Certified Applicator at Mayday Pest Management, on this episode of The Same Day Podcast to discuss effective pest control methods. David talks about the various pest control chemicals, how to manage bed bugs and other infestations, and his pricing structure for exterminating various pests.

In this interview, Véronique Özkaya, CEO of Argos Multilingual talks to Richard and Kimon about her career journey. She describes her first taste of the work world, helping her parents as a teenager as they ran their business. As an adult, Véronique first thought that diplomacy would be the right path, though, after just several months, she quit. Without a job and needing to pay rent, Véronique began teaching French at a business school. Véronique describes how she would wear non-prescription glasses to class to look older than her students who were the same age as her.  From there, she saw a job offer as an English-to-French translator for a computer company, a subject she knew nothing about. To her surprise she was hired, only to be let go three months later, along with all of the other translators at the company. The company asked Véronique and the others to stay on for an additional three months, but Véronique organized her co-workers to all resign simultaneously and negotiate for higher pay as outside contractors. Afterward, Véronique was promoted from translation work to project management, overseeing all French translation for nearly seven years at Lionbridge. She began to develop a frustration with salespeople, particularly their propensity for a lack of understanding of the core activities of the translators and the project managers. This caused Véronique to move into sales herself. She took a job at a new company, only to get an offer to stay at her current company working in sales. Véronique quickly became the top salesperson at Lionbridge, which proved to be a personal boon once the company went public. Véronique talks about the challenges of being a woman in business. She describes the different work environments she experienced, some that were models of inclusion and others which were more like old boys' clubs. Véronique discusses some of the personal challenges and difficulties she faced, which eventually led her to work at a new company. At this new company, she quickly became CEO. It was soon after purchased, where Véronique encountered similar issues with gender parity.  Véronique also describes her work at Argos Multilingual as the CEO. Argos' translation work differs from that of a standard translator, focusing on enterprise and specialized translation services as opposed to person-to-person. As CEO, Véronique is also a shareholder with a vested interest in the long-term strategy of Argos. Her goal is to grow the company and turn it into the most reputable translation company. Veronique is a seasoned international leader with experience building and strengthening the sales and marketing functions for organizations with high growth ambitions. “Uber for ‘x’” is the most overused, maddening phrase in startup land. It’s hype-marketing shorthand for just about every business idea that leverages the sharing economy. That’s why co-founders Keithan and Quiante Hedrick were initially wary of framing their live-translator-on-demand app, Instaspeakers, as “Uber for translation” to potential investors. Translators on the platform are certified, working professionals –– not just people who are bilingual. Plus, they’re available via live video call, 24/7. It’s light years more effective than software like Google Translate, and more accessible than B2B translation services like TransPerfect and LionBridge.

John Fennelly, CEO of Lionbridge (lionbridge.com), delivers an informative overview of the translation services industry, its global expansion, and how technology is changing the industry. Lionbridge Technologies, Inc. is a successful software and professional services company that specializes in language translation, e-learning translation, localization, software testing, internationalization, interpretation, software development, software testing, and content development services and strategies. Lionbridge's CEO discusses the history of Lionbridge and their goal to provide a more personalized way to translate. CEO John Fennelly is a seasoned leader and pioneering innovator in localization and translation services. His strong leadership has helped to produce significant organic growth at Lionbridge, now with over 6,000 employees on board ready to assist businesses, helping them connect with their customers anywhere in the world. Before Fennelly's tenure at Lionbridge began he was the CEO of HireRight, a proven leader in the HCM technology space, where he led a major turnaround effort that culminated in record revenue and earnings growth leading to the profitable sale of the company. Fennelly has a long history in the information services and technology sector, working at notable companies such as Thomson Reuters, SunGard, and others. The translation entrepreneur highlights the many ways Lionbridge can help companies succeed globally. He details the value of rolling out new products globally to customers in a manner which all documents, websites, user guides, and more are translated with accuracy for the intended readers, wherever they are, in whatever language that is needed. He discusses his broad team of close to 30,000 translation freelancers who work diligently to ensure quality is delivered for every client and their company or business, by understanding a company's brand and unique messaging. And he details the importance of grasping various factors such as the differences between literal and nuanced translations that will resonate with the local market, driving interest and consumer connections.  While English is widely used as a base language for many businesses, there is still high demand for direct translation into a large number of varied languages globally. Fennelly states that the history of translation services was largely based in the translation of technical documents, the ancillary parts of the system or product, but now with so many voice-activated devices coming to the market, the translation of those is changing Lionbridge's space rather dramatically. Fennelly provides his thoughts on the future of translation services, and how machine learning is an integral part of where the business model is going now that voice-activated services are able to interact with people in their native language. And Lionbridge plays a major role in helping companies train their machines. Lionbridge believes that at its core, communication is always human, and the specialized Lionbridge community works tirelessly to add understanding to your data, and nuance to machine translation. As companies continue to seek new opportunities, customers, and markets for their brand, Lionbridge seeks to move forward with them, assisting them with connections, delivery, and training for translation services at the highest level. Fennelly talks about the need for translation companies to transition from service-based to technology-based companies, and how some are falling short as technology expands at a blistering pace. As Fennelly states, companies that can successfully navigate that transition will be well positioned for success, and those that cannot will suffer.

We have Kaite Rosa who is the Director of Marketing and Content at VentureFizz. If you haven't heard of VentureFizz, we'll definitely dive more into that, but let me tell you, they have some fantastic material if you are a startup tech company in Boston especially with their Talent on the Move series as well as their Driven profile series. Kaite, thank you for coming in and how are you doing today? Kaite Rosa: I'm doing great. How are you? Evin Anderson: Doing fantastic. Thank you. Now glad you can make it in and talk with us today. For people that again aren't familiar with VentureFizz, could you introduce the company as well as how you got involved? Kaite Rosa: VentureFizz is an online platform covering tech entrepreneurship and career inspiration focused entirely on companies here in Boston. We have one of the hottest job boards here in Boston with over 1,500 jobs for tech and startup companies and over 200 companies have a biz page with us, which is a place for them to not only feature their new roles, but also highlight their company culture. Evin Anderson: It's such a great way of connecting people with these startups. Do you know where the original concept first formulated from? Kaite Rosa: Sure. Our founder, Keith Cline, he started VentureFizz back in 2009. He in his previous life if you will was a recruiter for over I think nearly 20 years and he was working with all these really great interesting companies and finding out all these unique stories and meeting really innovative people, and wanted a place to like you said create that community, highlight the interesting things that people are doing and that their companies are doing so, he started VentureFizz. It was a little bit of a side project for a couple of years for him and then in about 2012, 2013, he really started to ramp up his efforts with it. Tatiana Ivan: Before you were at VentureFizz, you worked for a lot of different companies such as Virgin Pulse, Lionbridge, Brafton. What made you decide to join VentureFizz? Kaite Rosa: I came into VentureFizz by way of Virgin Pulse, which is a health tech company out in Framingham and I was there for about two and a half years as senior marketing communications manager. I got to work on some really exciting projects there. I helped see the company through a rebrand. They were growing very rapidly and last May, they secured $93 million in funding. Tatiana Ivan: Wow. Kaite Rosa: It was really great. There were a lot of really exciting projects to work on and I learned a ton in a relatively short amount of time. I stayed on with the company for about six months thereafter, but I really missed that early stage growth opportunity aspect of working on a startup so, I connected with our founder, Keith Cline, and the role that I'm in now is really just like the perfect next step for me and it was really interesting to me to go back to more of my journalism roots, which is what I initially did professionally, and here we are.
